Finding Someone

Chapter 154: Finding Someone

After agreeing to help Zhuang Cheng, Chu Feng traveled to another world to find Manning.

The moment he looked for Manning, he stirred up a storm in the castle district.

Things were different now—Manning was no longer an obscure figure.

People knew he had gone “overseas” twice already, and he had become a hot topic in the castle district. Every move he made was under close watch.

Now that word had spread he’d be going “overseas” a third time, many in the castle district were green with envy.

Manning hadn’t expected a third trip so soon. When he heard he’d be sent to find someone, he got visibly excited.

“You’re going over again?” Delice looked at him with envy.
Manning nodded. “Seems like it.”

“So lucky! I want to go too,” Delice said, eyes sparkling.

Manning replied meekly, “I’m not going to play. I’m going to work.”

Delice puffed out her cheeks. “Still! I want to work too!”

“Can I go over and work too?” Delice asked eagerly.
Manning shook his head. “Probably not.”

“So unfair! Why don’t I have powers?” Delice clutched her head dramatically.

Hughes gave him a glance. “Why are you howling? I have powers, and I still can’t go.”

Delice looked at Hughes. “Look at yourself. Even if you could go, what good would it do?”

Hughes got worked up. “Who says I don’t look human? I’m just short and a bit hairy. I could shave and pretend to be a kid!”

Delice rolled her eyes. “Give me a break. You? A kid? What kind of child is that burly?”

Shi Qi looked at Delice with envy. She looked human and had powers, but still hadn’t been across the sea once. Manning was already going for the third time. She wasn’t worse than him in any way. She stared at Manning, clearly upset.

Manning felt extremely awkward under the gaze of dozens of people. The room was full of the castle district’s “big names.” If stares could kill, he felt like he’d be sliced to pieces and eaten alive by now.

Chu Feng went to the shaman, completely unaware of Manning’s situation. The shaman looked at Chu Feng and said, “Manning has already been there three times. Actually, there are still quite a few ability-users in the camp.”

Chu Feng gave an awkward smile. Was the shaman subtly hinting that he wanted to go there too?

Manning’s abilities were more useful over there, and besides, he looked very “safe.”

The shaman nodded in understanding and said, “That’s true. Manning is human, so he doesn’t arouse suspicion. I think the rabbit experiments can continue.”

Chu Feng thought for a moment and replied, “That’s worth considering.”

In the past few days, with a sufficient supply of Witch Stones, his strength had improved quite a bit. Illya too—he seemed to be able to condense the gray mist into walls now. With Illya’s current abilities, he should be able to offer the rabbit stronger protection.

“Manning.” Chu Feng walked in.

Those who had been watching Manning instantly turned their heads in unison and gave Chu Feng a respectful look.

Manning noticed how the crowd’s attention shifted from him to the boss. Chu Feng, overwhelmed by their burning stares, felt his heart pounding.

Looking at their eyes, Chu Feng felt like they were filled with resentment—as if he were a scumbag who abandoned them after flirting.

Waving his hand, Chu Feng said, “Alright, alright, everyone stop crowding here. Get back to work.”

Everyone in the room glanced at Manning enviously before reluctantly leaving. Chu Feng took Manning, a rabbit, and a few jars of fruit brew back to the villa.

Once they arrived, Chu Feng let go and said, “Illya, check on the rabbit.”

Illya opened the cardboard box, and a rabbit’s head popped out. Startled, he let out a loud scream.

Chu Feng looked at him in confusion. “What’s wrong with you?”

He thought to himself: What’s up with Illya? It’s just a rabbit! He’s seen much worse before—why is he this scared?

Illya pointed at the rabbit, eyes wide. “Duoduo… Duoduo!”

Chu Feng: “This rabbit is Duoduo? What did the shaman do—how could he end up using Duoduo as a test subject?! Are you sure you’re not mistaken?”

“It’s Duoduo! Don’t you recognize her?”

Chu Feng: “Sure, I’ve seen her, but don’t all rabbits look pretty much the same?”

Realizing she’d been found out, Duoduo transformed into human form.

Chu Feng looked at her speechlessly. “How did you get here?”

Duoduo looked a bit guilty. “I’ve been hanging out with the rabbits near the shaman lately…”

Illya stared at her and said sternly, “You knew we were using the rabbits for experiments, so you swapped yourself in on purpose. Do you know the previous rabbits all died?”

Duoduo lowered her head, guilty. “I’m healthy. Nothing will happen to me.”

Chu Feng sighed. I really underestimated how much this side of the world attracts outsiders. Manning even said he could die happy just visiting once—and now Duoduo actually came over and risked her life.

Chu Feng looked at Duoduo. “You don’t feel sick? No stomachache or anything?”

Duoduo shook her head.

Chu Feng frowned. Duoduo’s stunt may be reckless, but at least it proves that non-ability-users won’t necessarily die crossing over.

He looked at Manning and asked, “How do you feel?”

Manning replied, “I feel great this time. The first time was awful, the second time was also uncomfortable, but now I feel nothing—probably because Illya’s ability has evolved.”

Chu Feng nodded. “Good to hear.”

Then he looked at Illya with some suspicion. “How did you let something like this happen? Didn’t you sense her aura was off?”

Logically, Illya should be very sensitive to beastkin aura, especially with Duoduo’s power growing.

Illya frowned. “If she’s been living among real rabbits for a long time, it’s hard to tell. Plus, she stinks.”

Normally, Illya wouldn’t have been so careless. But this time was different—many people were pestering him to sneak over as “tourists,” which made him really stressed.

Chu Feng glared at Duoduo. “How long has it been since you bathed?”

Duoduo blushed and lowered her head.

The bathhouse in the other world had already been completed. It was the most popular facility in the castle district, even with kids.

Duoduo must’ve purposely gone several days without bathing to blend in with the real rabbits. This wasn’t spontaneous—it was clearly premeditated. She likely took into account Illya’s detection abilities, so she deliberately made herself filthy.

Illya looked at Chu Feng and asked, “What now?”

Chu Feng shook his head. “We’ve already set a time with Xiao Cheng. We’ll have to let her stay here for now.”

Duoduo looked at him with sapphire-like eyes and said, “Don’t worry. I’ll take care of myself.”

Chu Feng shook his head. “You can play in the house, but don’t go outside. There are no beastkin here. If you don’t want to be dissected, stay put. Got it?”

Duoduo nodded. “Got it, got it.”

Chu Feng rubbed his forehead, thinking: Kids really are a handful.

He wasn’t sure if anyone else knew Duoduo had crossed over. If they did…

Duoduo seemed to realize she was in trouble and shrank back.

Still uneasy, Chu Feng called Lin Zhihao and asked him to help take care of her.

Illya looked at Chu Feng and said, “Don’t worry. Duoduo looks enough like a beastkin. When beastkin take human form, they usually retain some animal traits. Duoduo, for example, has a short tail. With the weather being cold, her pants will cover it.”

Chu Feng nodded. “I guess that works.”

Once Duoduo was settled, Chu Feng and Illya headed to the Capital to meet with Zhuang Cheng.

Zhuang Cheng looked at Chu Feng, puzzled. “Why are you so late?”

Chu Feng frowned. “Got delayed by a damn rabbit.”

Zhuang Cheng looked confused. “A rabbit? Why, were you eating a braised rabbit and got too into it, lost track of time?”

Chu Feng thought: …If only that were true. Duoduo really stinks. Before coming here, Illya even gave her a bath

Chu Feng suddenly asks, “Anyway, forget that. Is the time set?”

Zhuang Cheng nodded. “Yes, it’s already arranged.”

He noticed the bags Chu Feng and Illya were carrying. “Bro, what’s in the bags?”

Chu Feng: “Fruit wine. Sis was complaining that there’s no alcohol left, so I brought a bit.”

Zhuang Cheng said sourly, “You’re so nice to Sis. Why—”

Chu Feng casually replied, “Because she’s pretty.”

Zhuang Cheng: “…” So he’s saying I’m not good-looking? He was quite handsome too—everyone called him the school hunk!

Chu Feng glanced at the sulking Zhuang Cheng. “Alright, let’s get on with it.” He shook his head and thought to himself: Once this is done, I still have to go back.

Zhuang Cheng nodded. “Okay.”

*

Zhuang Cheng had arranged to meet Su Lin for a meal. Su Lin looked unwell and rather worn out.

Zhuang Cheng: “Cousin, what’s wrong?”

Su Lin said gloomily, “I dreamed of Yuanyuan. She kept saying she was cold.”

Zhuang Cheng: “Don’t worry, cousin. Yuanyuan is a good kid—nothing bad will happen to her.”

They chatted idly, glancing occasionally in Chu Feng’s direction. Chu Feng gave Zhuang Cheng an “OK” hand sign. Seeing the signal, Zhuang Cheng quietly sighed in relief. After Su Lin left, Zhuang Cheng hurried to Chu Feng. “How did it go?”

Chu Feng: “The child is still alive.”

Zhuang Cheng relieved, “That’s good. As long as she’s alive.”

Manning: “She’s alive, but the situation might not be great.”

Zhuang Cheng muttered angrily, “Damn human traffickers.”

Chu Feng shook his head and stood up. “Alright, let’s go. The sooner we finish this, the sooner we can head back.” Chu Feng, in his heart, preferred to stay low-profile and make quiet gains.

He, Zhuang Cheng, and the others made several stops before arriving at a small village.

Zhuang Cheng: “Is it here?”

Chu Feng nodded. “We’re close.”

Manning led the group into the village and stopped in front of a farmhouse. A little girl was drawing water and doing laundry. It was nearly dusk, and the weather was cold. Her clothes were thin and shabby.

Zhuang Cheng: “Is that her?” He was stunned.

Illya: “Isn’t that your niece? You’ve seen her before, right?” she asked in confusion.

Zhuang Cheng rolled his eyes inwardly. It was years ago when I saw her. Kids grow fast.

The little girl he remembered was chubby and rosy-cheeked. But this girl looked thin, dull-eyed, and frail—hard to recognize.

Manning calmly said, “It’s her. Even if she’s not the exact one you’re thinking of, she’s still your niece. You’re related by blood. That much is certain.”

Illya translated Manning’s words and looked at Zhuang Cheng. “The rest is up to you now. Go pick up the girl.”

Zhuang Cheng thought, Just take her? He came to find someone, but doing it this way made him feel like a kidnapper.

Chu Feng patted him on the shoulder. “We’ve found her. What you do next is up to you. You’re going to inherit a corporation in the future—you should be able to handle something like this.”

Zhuang Cheng annoyed, “I’m still a minor.”

Chu Feng: “Gan Luo became prime minister at 12. You’re older than that and still can’t manage this? Come on, I believe in you.”

Zhuang Cheng: “…” Is he really encouraging me?

Chu Feng left with Illya and Manning, abandoning Zhuang Cheng to handle the rest alone.

Standing on the road, Zhuang Cheng was speechless at how Chu Feng had ditched him.

Back in the city, Chu Feng and Illya suddenly reappeared in Xiao Zhen’s villa.

Illya uneasy, “We just left Zhuang Cheng alone in that unfamiliar village. Is that really okay?”

Chu Feng: “He’s basically an adult. Besides, he’s a rich second-gen.”

Illya confused, “So what if he’s rich?”

Chu Feng: “It means he has lots of connections and resources. Money makes everything smoother. There’s a saying: ‘Money can make the devil turn millstones.’ We’ve already helped him enough—we can’t do everything for him. I’ve got my own problems—like Duoduo, that rabbit. Who knows what’s going on with her now?”

Illya: “That’s true.”

Illya recalled that she had gone off to train when she was Zhuang Cheng’s age. Surely, he could handle this on his own too.

Meanwhile, Zhuang Cheng, now officially “left behind,” stood blankly in the strange village. After a long time, it finally sank in—he had been ditched.

He calmed himself, clenched his fists, and accepted his fate. Then he ran into the village to find out more about the girl’s situation.

An elderly woman nearby was quite talkative. Usually, no one kept her company, so when she saw Zhuang Cheng interested in the little girl, she opened up and chattered nonstop.

He learned that the family he was looking for had been childless for five years after marriage, so they adopted a girl. But after a year, the wife got pregnant.

Naturally, with their own biological child on the way, they neglected Yuanyuan even more.

The old lady said the girl was pitiful—often hungry, doing chores at such a young age.

Zhuang Cheng grew indignant. He felt like rallying a group of people to beat up that couple.

Translator’s Note:
There is a switch in Duoduo gender here. Due to some Chinese mis-translation, I always thought that Duoduo was a male rabbit >.<
