Chapter 91: Transmigrated as a Fraudulent Male Streamer (15)
He Yongning simply watched the two from the sidelines, as if they were performing a comedic double act.
“You didn’t seem to be this afraid of…” He Yongning was about to say ghosts, but perhaps worrying that Pei Hengyun might overreact, he changed his wording, “…afraid of that thing.”
“During winter break back then, didn’t we even play that game in the classroom?”
“Game?” Cen Yu immediately looked at He Yongning. “What game?”
He Yongning hadn’t expected Cen Yu to be so interested. He thought hard for a moment before explaining:
“You know, the game where a few people stand in the corners of a room and tap each other’s shoulders.”
“I recall you didn’t seem that scared back then.” He Yongning looked at Pei Hengyun. Even though he knew everyone changed to some extent after graduation, the drastic shift in Pei Hengyun’s personality still exceeded his expectations.
Pei Hengyun seemed to recall the game they had played years ago as well.
He explained to Cen Yu in a low voice, “It’s precisely because I played that game… that I started getting a little scared afterward.”
He pulled Cen Yu away from the old house and back onto the gravel path, acting as if he were genuinely terrified that something might suddenly leap out from the ruins. “…I felt like… something extra really did appear during that time.”
Cen Yu was naturally familiar with that famous game.
Four people stand in the four corners of a pitch-black room. Starting from the first person, they move in sequence to tap the shoulder of the person in the next corner and call out their own name.
Logically, there should always be one empty corner in this game, but…
Often, by the end of the game, the four people in the dark would suddenly realize that a strange, unfamiliar name had emerged from the corner that was supposed to be empty.
As a renowned fraudulent streamer, Cen Yu was no stranger to staging such theatrical effects.
—In reality, that voice would just be a remote-controlled recorder placed there beforehand.
Pre-record an unfamiliar name, process it through a voice changer, and simply hit play in the dark.
Then, when it was time to switch corners, someone would secretly carry the recorder with them to the next spot.
If Cen Yu had previously wondered where on earth a ghost came from in this perfectly normal school story, he finally understood now—
Turns out, you main characters brought this upon yourselves!
He glanced at Pei Hengyun, who seemed lost in memories and was trembling with fear, then looked toward He Yongning. “So an unfamiliar name really popped up back then?”
Perhaps recalling that specific past event…
He Yongning’s gaze flickered between Cen Yu and Pei Hengyun’s faces before he finally nodded. “Yes.”
“Whose name?”
“I don’t know.” He Yongning frowned. “Looking back now, the memory just feels incredibly hazy…”
He turned to Pei Hengyun. “Did you speak to the person with that name back then?”
A bewildered expression crossed Pei Hengyun’s face upon hearing this. “I spoke?”
“Mm,” He Yongning said. “I remember you asking some sort of question.”
Yet when he tried to recall the specifics, the memory felt exceptionally blurry, as if his mind had deliberately buried it to protect him.
No matter how hard he tried, all he could recall was the sheer terror everyone felt the moment that unfamiliar name suddenly echoed in the pitch-black room.
And the question Pei Hengyun had asked at that exact moment.
“So, regarding this… is there some kind of lore or backstory?” Cen Yu immediately began investigating.
After all, typically speaking, entities summoned out of nowhere inside a school classroom were always connected to the school’s past.
“And why were you guys playing this game out of nowhere anyway?”
He Yongning genuinely couldn’t remember a thing. Instead, it was the previously trembling, seemingly terrified Pei Hengyun who suddenly spoke up.
“I heard that once that stranger appears in the game, you can make a wish to him.”
“?” Cen Yu looked at Pei Hengyun. “…Did you make a wish?”
Pei Hengyun hesitated for a moment. “Since he said I was talking to that thing back then… maybe I did make a wish?”
Clearly, Pei Hengyun was extremely uncertain himself.
“…” Great, amnesia all around.
Cen Yu cursed the System vehemently in his mind once again.
Perhaps because they had been gone for too long, Pei Hengyun’s phone rang. Cen Yu took a glance and saw it was a call from the class monitor, Yu Sheng.
After answering and exchanging a few words, Pei Hengyun hung up and turned to Cen Yu and He Yongning.
“The class monitor said they aren’t waiting for us and are heading to the school first. He told us to make our own way there.”
Upon arriving at “Meiman High School,” Cen Yu realized this school was completely different from what he had imagined.
It had a standard running track and a brand-new teaching building… Sweeping his gaze across the sports field, he spotted an old teaching building obscured in the shadows of locust trees.
The exterior of the old building was partially tiled, with the untiled sections painted blue. Perhaps because it had been abandoned for so long, the building inexplicably evoked a sense of unease and dread.
Noticing Cen Yu’s gaze, Pei Hengyun quickly explained in a soft voice, “That over there is the old teaching building.”
Yu Sheng, overhearing his words, chimed in immediately, “Right. A few years ago, He Yongning donated a large sum of money, so we took the opportunity to build a new one.”
He then gestured to the others. “Shall we go take a look at the new building?”
Yan Feiluan wasn’t among the group. Perhaps due to his mobility issues, he hadn’t accompanied them. Or perhaps he felt that hanging around a teacher—even a former one—would still make these students, who had graduated ten years ago, feel uncomfortable.
Cen Yu cast a glance at the abandoned teaching building, noting that it matched the one in Pei Hengyun’s painting perfectly.
Seeing the group heading toward the new building, Cen Yu stopped in his tracks and said to Pei Hengyun, “I’m going over there to take a look.”
Just as Pei Hengyun was about to object, Yu Sheng interjected, “There’s nothing much to see over there. It’s basically empty, save for some old desks and chairs left behind.”
Cen Yu pulled out his phone. “It’s fine. I just happen to be looking for a spot to live stream… This place has the right atmosphere.”
An understanding look crossed Yu Sheng’s face. He signaled the others to continue toward the new building. Jiang Tuan, however, looked back at Cen Yu, as if wanting to say something.
He Yongning didn’t look back. Although Pei Hengyun wanted to follow Cen Yu, he was genuinely too terrified, managing only to look back constantly with every step he took. “Call me when you come out.”
Cen Yu nodded, then headed straight for the old teaching building without looking back.
Perhaps because Meiman Middle School hadn’t had a large student population back then, this teaching building was actually quite small, with only two classrooms per floor.
It was built in an L-shaped structure, with the teachers’ offices situated on the other side.
As Cen Yu climbed the stairs, he noticed a large, shattered mirror at the landing, above which the words Study Hard, Make Progress Every Day were painted.
However, in the currently deserted building, the shattered mirror and the slogan only evoked an inexplicable sense of dread.
Following the stairs to the second floor, Cen Yu came across an honor roll display board. Even though they had graduated ten years ago, He Yongning’s solo portrait was still pinned to it.
In the photo, a uniform-clad He Yongning stared quietly into the camera.
Beside it was a weekly journal entry he had written during high school—
My Best Friend
Unfortunately, perhaps due to rainwater seeping in over the years, only scattered phrases like “loves sports” and “my desk partner” were legible… He Yongning’s desk partner had been Pei Hengyun, hadn’t it?
Cen Yu snapped a photo of it as a clue, then leaned in closely to inspect the information below the honor roll.
It was right at this moment that he suddenly felt something ice-cold brush against the back of his neck.
Before he could react and lift his head, he felt a familiar, freezing hand clamp down on the back of his neck, its fingers continuously stroking his skin… Following the reflection on the glass of the display board, Cen Yu saw only an empty void behind him—there was absolutely nothing there.
“Are you a pervert ghost?!” Cen Yu couldn’t help but curse out loud. “Why do you grope people the moment you see them?!”
