Chapter 73: Cuddle, Cuddle, Cuddle
The golden eagle Shuangzhong had excellent eyesight.
It very quickly realized that Ying Kongtu and Wen Zhongshan had already seen it.
Outside, it flapped its wings and knocked the window with loud thuds, looking very much as if it would smash through the glass and come in if Ying Kongtu ignored it.
Wen Zhongshan said, “I’ll go talk to it.”
Ying Kongtu wrapped his bathrobe tighter around himself. “Don’t. Let me recover for a moment. I’ll be fine soon.”
He turned to look at the window. Even through the curtain, unable to see the golden eagle’s figure, Ying Kongtu’s eyes still shone with a gentle light. “Now that I think about it, it really has been a long time since I last saw little Shuangzhong. I actually missed it a little.”
Ying Kongtu quickly changed his clothes and dressed neatly, barely leaving even his neck exposed.
He went outside and called the golden eagle.
The golden eagle instantly flew from the window to the front door and cried twice at Ying Kongtu.
Ying Kongtu extended his arm.
The golden eagle’s eyes lit up, and it flew straight onto his arm, tilting its head as it looked at him.
Wen Zhongshan watched the man and eagle interact from the side and felt that this movement looked especially like a cat.
More precisely, like Tiaozhu.
Just from this one movement, it was clear that the two of them must have interacted quite a lot before.
“Shuangzhong, long time no see. I missed you so much.”
“Kik!”
Shuangzhong looked into Ying Kongtu’s eyes, happily rubbing against his neck. Its fluffy little head made Ying Kongtu’s neck itch, and his heart softened too.
Ying Kongtu opened both arms and hugged it to his chest.
This large golden eagle did not resist at all. It looked extremely well behaved, and opened its beak to call twice more, though only softly, in two tiny cries.
Wen Zhongshan stood to the side.
After holding it for a while, Ying Kongtu showed the golden eagle in his arms to Wen Zhongshan. “Want to hold it?”
Wen Zhongshan opened his arms. “Can I? I’ll try.”
“Just hold it the way you hold Tiaozhu.” As Ying Kongtu spoke, he lowered his head and said to the golden eagle, “This is my partner, Wen Zhongshan.”
“Hello, Shuangzhong. I’m Wen Zhongshan.” Wen Zhongshan gently took Shuangzhong and lowered his head to speak to it.
Shuangzhong looked at Wen Zhongshan curiously.
Its intelligence was far higher than that of an ordinary bird. It could accurately smell the complex scent on Wen Zhongshan, and among those scents was Ying Kongtu’s.
It was a very pleasant scent, one that made an eagle’s heart feel joyful.
Wen Zhongshan was also looking at Shuangzhong. He wanted to touch those smooth feathers, but in the end, he restrained himself.
They had only just met for the first time. He could not be too rude.
Shuangzhong was clearly an enthusiastic golden eagle. After staying in Wen Zhongshan’s arms for a while, it flew back onto Ying Kongtu’s shoulder and rubbed its head against his neck and face.
The movement was extremely catlike.
Ying Kongtu had originally been pressing his slightly sore lower back without a change in expression. Sensing its movements, he smiled and held it down, gathering it back into his arms.
Since Shuangzhong had already flown over, they definitely could not keep staying at Wen Zhongshan’s house. Otherwise, if Tiaozhu and the others came over later, caught them, and smelled certain strange scents, it would be even more awkward.
The two of them tidied up briefly and slowly walked toward Ying Kongtu’s house.
Shuangzhong was unwilling to fly on its own and remained in Ying Kongtu’s arms the entire time, curiously looking at the road and the surrounding modern buildings.
Wen Zhongshan tried to hold it, but Ying Kongtu declined with his eyes. Shuangzhong looked quite large, but it was actually not that heavy, and carrying it was not tiring.
Besides, they had not seen each other in a long time. They did indeed need to properly be close for a while.
Wen Zhongshan asked with his eyes: Does your body hurt? Are you all right?
Ying Kongtu’s face went a little red. He gently shook his head, then found it a little funny. His gaze skimmed across Wen Zhongshan’s eyes like a dragonfly touching water: How could I be that delicate?
Wen Zhongshan’s face warmed slightly, and he reached out to gently hold Ying Kongtu’s lower back.
The two houses were very close. When they returned to Ying Kongtu’s home, not much time had passed.
At least, Tiaozhu had only just finished fighting and was squatting on the wall licking its fur.
As soon as it caught the familiar scent, Tiaozhu let out a rough cry. “Meow-ow!”
Shuangzhong also wanted to flap its wings in Ying Kongtu’s arms and go up to quarrel with it, but Ying Kongtu held it down, so it could only howl loudly. “Kikikiki!”
Tiaozhu jumped down from the wall and ran straight toward Ying Kongtu. It seemed to want to take advantage of the fact that it was still free, leap up, and swipe at the golden eagle with its claws.
Ying Kongtu immediately said, “Wen Zhongshan!”
Wen Zhongshan reached out and caught Tiaozhu the instant it jumped, pressing it into his arms.
Tiaozhu pushed at Wen Zhongshan’s arm twice with its paw pads. Unable to push him away, it had no choice but to curse from his arms. “Meow-ow!”
Ying Kongtu watched the two little ones quarrel and felt a headache coming on.
The two men held one each. After the two little ones had argued through one round, Ying Kongtu said, “Truce. Whoever keeps arguing will be locked in the little shrine.”
Tiaozhu and Shuangzhong both understood. They shrank their heads and stopped making sounds.
Ying Kongtu placed Shuangzhong on the ground and signaled Wen Zhongshan to put Tiaozhu down too.
“It’s been so many years, and your first reaction to seeing each other is still to quarrel. You two really are something.” Ying Kongtu looked at them, both exasperated and amused.
Tiaozhu and Shuangzhong were both very obedient. Mainly, they really were afraid Ying Kongtu would lock them in the little shrine.
In the past, when they fought too fiercely, they really had been locked in a little dark room.
Especially Shuangzhong. It particularly hated staying in the shrine all the time.
Ying Kongtu watched them for a while. Seeing that they had no intention of fighting again, he finally breathed a sigh of relief.
He beckoned Wen Zhongshan to follow him into the house, leaving space for the cat and eagle. Once they became familiar with each other again, they would be fine.
After entering the house, Wen Zhongshan asked, “Why did they fight so fiercely?”
Ying Kongtu said in a low voice, “Tiaozhu used to be quite mischievous. When Shuangzhong first came, it was a half-grown golden eagle and could fly, so it refused to submit to Tiaozhu. That was how they ended up clashing.”
After a pause, Ying Kongtu lowered his voice further. “Don’t look at them like this. Their relationship is actually pretty good.”
Wen Zhongshan was doubtful. “Their relationship is pretty good?”
“You’ll know after watching for a while. Come on, let’s hide behind the window and secretly observe.”
The two of them stayed inside the house and did not disturb the cat and eagle outside.
After quite a while, the two really did move closer to each other, tentatively meeting each other’s eyes and interacting.
Tiaozhu sniffed Shuangzhong, and Shuangzhong rubbed against Tiaozhu too.
Tiaozhu helped Shuangzhong lick its feathers, and Shuangzhong also used its beak to groom Tiaozhu’s fur.
In that short span of time, they looked as though they had made up, and even their movements became friendly.
Ying Kongtu gestured to Wen Zhongshan. “I told you their relationship was good. See? I didn’t lie to you, right?”
“It really is hard to imagine.”
“They’re just like this. Friendly for a while, then arguing for a while.” Ying Kongtu lowered his voice. “When all the little mountain gods come out, they’ll argue even more fiercely.”
Just talking about it made Ying Kongtu feel as if his head had already started to hurt.
Wen Zhongshan massaged his head for him. “That sounds truly difficult.”
“That’s what happens when a whole big family lives together. But before, I had thirty-nine mountains. The place was large enough for them to make trouble. When there was really no other way, I could send them off to patrol different mountains.”
Ying Kongtu pulled over a chair and sat down. “That won’t work now. The space now is truly too small. Once they all come out, they’ll quarrel. Maybe they’ll even fight.”
Even though Ying Kongtu now had added Qianchongcui Mountain, his territory was still not large enough to allow the little mountain gods to move about freely to their hearts’ content.
This was also one of the reasons he had delayed summoning all the little mountain gods out.
Wild animals, even after becoming little mountain gods, still needed sufficient territory to move around in. Otherwise, it was extremely cruel to them.
They stayed in the kitchen for a while. Soon, Xian Niao returned from patrolling the mountain with Dart and Jingwei.
Seeing an extra golden eagle in the courtyard, they were very curious.
A golden eagle was a bird of prey. Dart and Jingwei both held a certain reverence toward it, so they only watched from a distance and did not dare get too close.
Shuangzhong, on the other hand, was very happy when it saw Xian Niao. It cried out and ran straight over, rubbing its head against Xian Niao’s neck, appearing extremely affectionate.
The movement was just like that little forest owl they had rescued.
Dart and Jingwei both felt a little more familiar with it.
Shuangzhong rubbed against Xian Niao over and over again, looking as if it had missed the wolf king very much.
Xian Niao looked at it, then friendly licked its feathers.
“Kikke!” Shuangzhong cried again, its call different from before.
“Awooo—” Xian Niao also called.
They looked together toward Dart and Jingwei.
Dart and Jingwei timidly shrank back a little and leaned against each other.
Shuangzhong, however, ran over like a walking chicken, friendly tapping Dart with its beak, then tapping Jingwei too. Its eyes were full of curiosity.
“Kiki.” It greeted the two little ones in a friendly way, already seeming very much like a steady little mountain god.
Author’s Note:
Sometimes, the cat meals Wen Zhongshan makes are a little hard to eat.
Tiaozhu won’t eat them, Xian Niao won’t eat them, and Jingwei can’t manage to swallow them.
Only Dart secretly carries the cat food outside and feeds it to all kinds of stray kitties.
Now, aside from the tabby, it has already become the cat boss of several nearby streets.
