Chapter 67
Feng Wu carried Lin An’an in his little-cub form around the half-built transit station for a look.
But after circling the Empire’s section, that still wasn’t enough for Lin An’an. He had Feng Wu take him even farther out to check on the transit stations being built by the Federation and the third-party forces as well.
All three sides were progressing at about the same pace.
At first, Feng Wu had been a little worried. The two of them were from the Empire, after all, and they were just openly strolling over there. He wondered whether that might make people suspicious.
But to his surprise, whether it was the Federation construction team or the third-party crews, all of them greeted their arrival with remarkable warmth, as if the grudges among the three sides had never existed at all.
If this had been in the past, and Feng Wu, as the Empire’s Marshal, had dared to do something like this, he probably would have been chased out with a giant shovel.
[I’ve honestly been on edge this whole time. Back on Sin Star, people didn’t draw the lines that clearly, so I was worried An’an would get bullied if he went over there]
[Wuwuwu it’s been so long since I’ve seen everyone getting along this peacefully [covering mouth in tears jpg]]
[Because everyone has a common goal now, right? That’s why they’re being so friendly]
[If only it could stay like this forever—no war, no prejudice [making a wish that this dream comes true jpg]]
Lin An’an saw the comments too. He blinked, but said nothing.
Their dream, honestly, wasn’t that hard to achieve. Looking at the current situation, as long as they could get rid of the X-System people stirring up trouble, as well as Xia Yuanhan and the others colluding with them, the era of “great peace” would be just around the corner.
At least, in Lin An’an’s understanding, neither his eldest brother nor he himself, nor Federation leader Gu Yubai, nor even Octopus Bro and the others, were people who liked starting wars and conflicts.
Would their views change in the future? Lin An’an didn’t know. But at least for now, he was certain of this.
Several days later, the special medicine for Alpha finally passed every test and inspection, and plans began for large-scale production.
During that time, Xia Yuanhan had gone to great lengths to publicize himself and heap credit onto his own name.
Lin An’an ignored it all completely. In fact, he hoped Xia Yuanhan would hype it up even more. The higher Xia Yuanhan jumped now, the harder he would fall when the truth came out.
Mo Dexin had already received an invitation from the imperial family, asking him to attend the late Empress’s memorial banquet, which would be held soon.
Before they ever came here, Zhang Yifeng had already known their plan. So when he heard they would be leaving Watchstar tonight, he wasn’t surprised at all.
Feng Wu and Lin An’an were going to slip away under cover of night, and once they left, Zhang Yifeng would take over Feng Wu’s role in disguise.
Fortunately, while they had been staying on Watchstar these last few days, Feng Wu and Lin An’an had deliberately cut down the frequency and length of their outings. Zhang Yifeng could stay indoors most of the time, only stepping out occasionally so people would know that “Feng Wu” was still on Watchstar.
After leaving Watchstar, Feng Wu and Lin An’an’s first destination was still the First Legion base at the edge of Imperial territory.
By the time they arrived, the people on base had already started their morning drills and work.
The two of them stayed invisible and followed behind Mo Dexin. Lin An’an kept glancing left and right, then quietly leaned toward Feng Wu’s ear and whispered, “Looks like there are way fewer people than last time.”
Feng Wu also leaned closer and murmured back, “Mm. Mo Dexin has sent quite a few people to the capital in batches. They’re already in position.”
Lin An’an found himself growing inexplicably tense.
Even though he had always known that when this day came, there would definitely be a clash, and that they held a strong advantage in this fight, he still couldn’t help worrying that something might go wrong.
Feng Wu noticed his unease and gently took his hand, his tone carrying not the slightest hesitation. “Don’t worry. Nothing will happen.”
Lin An’an closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and forced himself back into calm.
This time the two of them stayed at the base for far less time than they had on their previous visit. After less than two days, they set out again for the capital.
The identities Feng Wu and Lin An’an used were still the same friendly “borrowed” ones as last time: He Wen and Fang Liang.
On the way to the capital, Mo Dexin received a communication request from Xia Yuanhan.
At that moment, Feng Wu and Lin An’an were sitting inside Mo Dexin’s mech, Black Crow. The instant they saw it, the two of them almost simultaneously activated their invisibility.
Xia Yuanhan’s familiar, thoroughly irritating face appeared on Black Crow’s communication screen.
Mo Dexin lowered his head respectfully, hiding the flicker of emotion in his eyes. “Second Prince.”
Xia Yuanhan gave a slight nod. “Already on the way?”
“Yes,” Mo Dexin replied. “We’re expected to reach the palace in another two hours.”
Xia Yuanhan gave a soft, unreadable hum.
Mo Dexin took the initiative to ask, “After we arrive at the palace, do you need me to see you?”
“No need,” Xia Yuanhan said. “Remember this: before the matter is done, you are Feng Wu’s man. Don’t expose yourself in front of him.”
“Yes, Your Highness.”
Xia Yuanhan went on speaking to Mo Dexin for a few more sentences, openly and subtly pressing him to act quickly.
Mo Dexin responded respectfully, “Feng Wu’s optical brain isn’t with me. His system has been modified by him, so cracking it remotely takes time. The progress is already more than halfway done. Please give me a few more days, Your Highness. The outcome definitely won’t disappoint you.”
As he spoke, he pulled up another screen inside Black Crow, displaying a set of breakthrough data. The progress bar on the screen had already advanced to around sixty percent, and the numbers were still inching upward.
Xia Yuanhan nodded, his tone softening somewhat. “You’ve worked hard. Once this is over, everything I promised you will be fulfilled.”
Mo Dexin looked overjoyed. “Yes! Thank you, Your Highness!”
Seeing the naked ambition and greed on Mo Dexin’s face, Xia Yuanhan curled his lips in satisfaction and cut off the communication.
The instant the screen went dark, Mo Dexin dropped the expression on his face and even raised a hand to rub the side of it.
Lin An’an sighed in admiration. “Mo-ge, what acting!”
Mo Dexin let out a helpless sigh. “If I can win even one word of praise from Da-sao, then all this sacrifice was worth it.”
Feng Wu cast him a light glance. Mo Dexin stiffened instantly and hurriedly made a zipper motion across his lips.
Two hours later, Black Crow once again arrived at the same mech docking site they had visited not long ago.
Perhaps the memory of their last landing had left Mo Dexin traumatized. Before opening the cockpit this time, he even deliberately scanned the entire airfield. Only after confirming that Yu Jin’s mech was nowhere in sight did he finally open the hatch.
Entering the palace followed almost exactly the same procedure as before, and the three of them were led to the imperial villa area. Even the rooms arranged for them were identical to last time.
Mo Dexin spotted Yu Jin standing outside the room next door. The man smiled at him with practiced warmth. “Long time no see, Vice Commander Mo.”
After saying that, Yu Jin’s lips moved again. His voice dropped so low it was almost impossible to hear, and only Mo Dexin, standing closest, caught the words.
He said, “Future Commander Mo.”
Mo Dexin barely held back from twitching at the corners of his mouth. After greeting Yu Jin, he used the excuse of being tired from travel and wanting an early rest, then returned to his room.
The moment Feng Wu and Lin An’an stepped inside, they opened the small back door connecting the two rooms through the balcony.
“Lang-ge.” Lin An’an said eagerly, “Let’s go. I want to see Mom.”
Tomorrow would be Bai Cenrou’s memorial day. Although according to plan they would also be visiting her grave tomorrow, Lin An’an still wanted to see her in advance.
One reason was that he wanted to apologize beforehand for the possibility that tomorrow’s events might disturb the peace of her memorial day. The other was that Lin An’an had a feeling there was a good chance they might run into his eldest brother tonight if they went to the imperial cemetery.
Based on what he knew of Xia Changluo, if his brother knew something major was going to happen tomorrow, then there was a strong chance he would do exactly what Lin An’an had done—come to Bai Cenrou’s grave ahead of time.
And the facts proved Lin An’an’s guess completely right.
When he and Feng Wu arrived at the cemetery, they immediately spotted the hovercar parked at the entrance.
Xia Changluo had only arrived slightly earlier than they had. When Lin An’an went inside, he even saw the group just past the entrance, not too far in. Lu Bo was supporting Xia Changluo, and there were three guards following behind them. The configuration was exactly the same as last time.
Xia Changluo walked slowly, so Lin An’an and Feng Wu quickened their pace, circled around the group, and reached Bai Cenrou’s grave before they did.
The imperial cemetery was huge. At Xia Changluo’s pace, it would likely take him at least another five minutes to get there.
Taking advantage of that gap, and using Feng Wu’s spiritual barrier, Lin An’an hurriedly said a few words to Bai Cenrou before the two of them quietly moved behind the gravestone.
Eventually, Xia Changluo reached Bai Cenrou’s grave.
His face was still unnaturally pale, but Lin An’an noticed that this time, at least, when he crouched down, he didn’t almost fall over the way he had last time.
The three guards stood behind Xia Changluo, while Lu Bo crouched to his right.
After thinking for a moment, Lin An’an suddenly stepped forward, came around through the open space on Xia Changluo’s left side, and gently tugged at one of Xia Changluo’s fingers.
Xia Changluo’s pupils contracted, but then, as if realizing something, he calmed down almost instantly.
He discreetly curled his finger in response, then tilted his head slightly and said to Lu Bo and the three guards behind him, “I want to speak to Bai Yi alone for a while.”
The three guards didn’t move.
Xia Changluo seemed to get a little annoyed. “Just stand farther away. You don’t have to leave. As long as I’m still in your line of sight, that should be enough, shouldn’t it?”
Two of the guards turned to look at the lead guard. The leader swept his gaze around the cemetery, clearly deciding that in a graveyard at this hour of night, no one was suddenly going to pop out from nowhere. Only then did he respond and take two steps back.
Lu Bo, who had been supporting Xia Changluo all this time, still didn’t move.
Xia Changluo said helplessly, “Lu Bo, I can manage.”
Lu Bo met his gaze. Seeing the look on Xia Changluo’s face that made it clear he wouldn’t accept refusal, he could only sigh inwardly, suppress his worry, and retreat a little farther as well.
Lin An’an lightly nodded at Feng Wu. Feng Wu immediately set up a spiritual screen. At this distance, using a spiritual barrier now would not be noticed.
He clasped Xia Changluo’s cold hand and said softly, “Big Brother, I’m here.”
