Chapter 65

After exchanging their respective information and updates, Gu Yubai hurriedly ended the call.

Lin An’an slowly let out a breath and murmured, “Two weeks…”

Feng Wu, who was adjusting the mecha’s controls, glanced at him. “What, nervous?”

“Nervous?” Lin An’an shook his head. “No. When it comes to a battle that’s absolutely going to be won, I’m never nervous.”

He licked his lips. His dark eyes burned as if lit from within by flame. “I’m just impatient.”

Impatient for that day to arrive. Impatient to expose Xia Yuanhan’s true face to the entire Empire—to the whole galaxy.

“Mm. I’m impatient too.” Feng Wu curled his lips slightly. “But…”

“But what?”

Feng Wu said softly, “But for now, you can stop thinking about all that. You need to rest.”

“I’m not sleepy yet,” Lin An’an blinked.

“Sleepy or not, you still need to rest,” Feng Wu said. “There are still several more spatial jumps ahead. If you don’t rest now, you’ll feel awful later. And once we get back to Sin Star, there’ll still be things waiting for us. Sleep for a bit while you can.”

Without waiting for Lin An’an to answer, Feng Wu called out to Silver Armor’s consciousness. “Silver Armor, switch the passenger seat to rest mode.”

Silver Armor chirped happily, “Yes, Master.”

The next second, the co-pilot seat Lin An’an was sitting in slowly shifted shape, changing from a standard seat into a compact single bed.

Feng Wu pressed a hand lightly to Lin An’an’s shoulder. “Sleep. I’ll wake you when we get there.”

Lin An’an lay down with the flow of the motion. Feng Wu covered him with a thin blanket. He looked up at Feng Wu. “Aren’t you going to rest too?”

“You sleep first,” Feng Wu said. “Once we leave Imperial territory, I’ll rest.”

Before that, he needed to pilot the mecha manually and avoid the Empire’s large and small defense nets, so they wouldn’t be detected.

Lin An’an gave a soft hum, rubbed his cheek against the hand Feng Wu still had on his shoulder, and closed his eyes.

When he woke again, Lin An’an saw a very familiar planetary outline through Silver Armor’s observation screen.

“Sin Star?” Lin An’an rubbed his eyes, his voice still heavy with sleep. “Are we almost there?”

Feng Wu reached out and smoothed Lin An’an’s slightly messy hair back into place. “Mm, almost. I was actually planning to wake you after we entered Sin Star’s range.”

Lin An’an sat up and asked, “Did you not rest?”

“I did.” Feng Wu pointed at the other blanket beside him, and only then did Lin An’an withdraw his gaze in satisfaction.

It was still before dawn, and the sky had not fully brightened.

Silver Armor activated stealth mode and slipped into Sin Star’s airspace under the cover of the faint morning haze, landing on the open ground outside the farm.

Xiong Yingjun and Si Youlin had received Feng Wu’s message in advance and were already waiting at the entrance.

“Boss! An’an!” Xiong Yingjun strode forward at once, full of delight.

Si Youlin followed behind him and greeted them too. “Boss, An’an.”

Feng Wu nodded at the two of them. “Let’s talk inside.”

The four of them went back into the villa. The moment they stepped into the room that was usually used as a small meeting room, Feng Wu received a communication request from Modexin.

He accepted it.

“Boss, you…” Modexin paused, his eyes sweeping over the background behind Feng Wu. “You’ve already arrived?”

Feng Wu nodded. “Mm. Just got here.”

Xiong Yingjun cut in excitedly, “We’d only just come through the door when you called.”

Feng Wu asked, “What is it?”

“Xia Yuanhan contacted me just now,” Modexin said. “He agreed to my proposal.”

“Mm. As expected.” Feng Wu gave a slight nod.

Modexin answered with a hum. “There’s something else too. Xia Yuanhan told me his plan and said he wants me to find a chance to carry it out.”

“What plan?” Xiong Yingjun looked confused. Si Youlin also looked puzzled. “Why would Xia Yuanhan contact Old Second?”

Since Feng Wu had rushed back to Sin Star immediately after the birthday banquet, he hadn’t yet had the chance to tell Xiong Yingjun and Si Youlin the details, so the two of them were still rather lost.

Taking advantage of the moment, Feng Wu quickly explained everything that had happened during the past few days they had been away from Sin Star.

Xiong Yingjun still had questions, but Si Youlin lightly tugged on him and said, “Let Old Second finish first.”

Modexin had remained silent while they took in the information, and only now did he continue, “Xia Yuanhan plans to throw the dirty water onto you and Sister-in-law.”

“Dirty water?” Lin An’an was blank for a second, then immediately reacted. “You mean… Xia Yuanhan wants to pin the appearance of Alpha on me and Brother Wolf? Say the two of us staged the whole thing ourselves?”

“That’s right.” Modexin nodded. “He forged some evidence and wants me to find an opportunity to hack Boss’s terminal or optical brain and secretly plant it in his data archive.”

Lin An’an fell silent for two seconds, then couldn’t help but spit out, “That method is filthy.”

Being “exposed” by Feng Wu’s most trusted subordinate and comrade-in-arms would not only kick Feng Wu off the position of First Legion commander, but also push Modexin onto the throne in his place. It was a perfect two-for-one scheme.

Modexin was disgusted too. He suppressed the anger and revulsion in his voice and said, “He wants me to find time to do it within the next few days. I made excuses and pushed it back a bit.”

“Mm. Drag it out until after two weeks,” Feng Wu said.

Their operation was in two weeks. As long as it was dragged past that point, Xia Yuanhan wouldn’t have a chance to put any of his plans into action, no matter how many he had.

Lin An’an frowned lightly. “If you drag it out that long, won’t Xia Yuanhan get suspicious?”

“No.” Modexin shook his head. “He personally signed a spiritual contract with me. He’s very unlikely to grow suspicious. At most, he’ll just think I’m moving too slowly. And besides, aside from me, there really isn’t anyone better suited to do this. Xia Yuanhan won’t be able to find anyone else to replace me in such a short time.”

Lin An’an thought about it and calmed down.

After the birthday banquet matters were finished, Si Youlin also gave them a brief summary of everything that had happened on Sin Star during their absence.

Life on Sin Star had actually been relatively calm lately. The only thing that could really be called major was that Qiu Baiyu and the others had expanded the planting scale of the treatment produce once again.

As a result, the farms had begun to feel short on manpower. So the Qiu family started offering public classes on planting techniques across Sin Star, with the aim of recruiting some Alpha patients who were quick to learn and strong at work into the farms.

Qiu Baiyu had asked Lin An’an about this in advance, asking whether it would be all right.

Of course Lin An’an had no objection. He had already handed full authority over the treatment produce to the Qiu family. What people they hired and how many helpers they brought in was none of his concern.

What was more, the Qiu family’s public classes were teaching the Qiu family’s own cultivation methods. If the Qiu family head approved of it, Lin An’an naturally had no reason to object.

If anything, he wished the treatment produce output could grow even larger, so the patients on Sin Star could recover more quickly and finally leave the planet that had trapped them for so many years.

At that thought, Lin An’an’s mind drifted for a moment.

He wondered how the lab side was doing. Had there been any progress?

These past few days, all of them had been busy elsewhere. Researcher Qi Ran hadn’t contacted them, and they in turn had forgotten to ask after the team’s status.

So that same afternoon, Feng Wu and Lin An’an set out for the research safe house.

When they arrived, Qi Ran’s entire team was inside the lab, all of them in research uniforms and masks, moving around busily. There were also a few familiar faces inside.

Those few were members of the First Legion, all Alpha patients scattered around various parts of Sin Star. Lin An’an had met them a few times before.

Feng Wu stood outside the lab, while Lin An’an—already back in his little cub form—curled up in his familiar palm and watched Qi Ran and the others through the transparent window.

Are Xiao Lin and the others here to help test the research results? Lin An’an asked.

Feng Wu nodded. “Yes.”

These First Legion patients had volunteered to become clinical test subjects. Every single one of them had signed a life-and-death waiver.

Alpha Syndrome was too unusual. To see whether the newly developed specific medicine truly worked, it had to be tested on actual patients.

And since they had already reached the stage of patient trials, that meant the development of the specific medicine had gone fairly well.

Even if this batch hadn’t yet reached the standard for large-scale use, they were probably very close.

And things were indeed more or less as Lin An’an had guessed.

A while later, Qi Ran and the others came out of the lab. The moment they spotted Feng Wu and Lin An’an, their eyes lit up.

“Marshal Feng Wu!” Qi Ran had already taken off his research suit, and his face was full of excitement. “The seventh version of the specific medicine has been produced. In another couple of days, we’ll know how effective it is.”

Lin An’an was a little surprised. It’s already at version seven?

“That’s right.” Qi Ran nodded. “The first version acted too slowly. The second cost too much…”

He went through each previous version in detail, summarizing all of their strengths and weaknesses, then continued, “This is version seven now. It combines all the advantages of the earlier versions and keeps the side effects as low as possible. We’re really hoping the clinical trial results will be satisfactory.”

The joy on his face was almost overflowing. “And we really have to thank you for the treatment pod data and documentation you gave us before. It helped our research immensely.”

Lin An’an tilted his head up and exchanged a glance with Feng Wu.

Feng Wu asked, “What are the side effects of this version?”

“Very, very mild. For people whose symptoms are relatively light, there usually won’t be any side effects after injection. For patients with more severe Alpha symptoms, the specific medicine concentration is higher, so they may experience some gastrointestinal discomfort—things like diarrhea or abdominal pain—but it won’t be serious. We estimate it will only last one to three days before going away on its own.”

Compared to severe Alpha symptoms, that level of side effect was practically negligible.

Feng Wu nodded. “Good. Let us know once the trial results are out.”

With that answer, Feng Wu and Lin An’an returned to the wildland farm for the time being to wait for the final trial results.

Two days later, they received a message from Qi Ran.

It was only three short words, but they carried overwhelming joy.

—It worked!
