Chapter 56
Lin An’an’s attitude made Modexin quietly let out a breath of relief.
“As for the room…” Lin An’an glanced at Feng Wu. “There’s no need to arrange another one. Wolf Bro and I have always shared a room.”
Modexin froze slightly. Always shared a room?
Lin An’an tilted his head toward Feng Wu. “Right, Wolf Bro?”
Modexin instinctively looked at Feng Wu. The tips of Feng Wu’s ears had already gone completely red, yet he still answered in an even tone with a soft hum. Then he lightly wrapped an arm around Lin An’an’s shoulder and led him forward.
Feng Wu’s room was along the corridor on the first floor. Since it had good soundproofing, they did not need to worry about others overhearing them even if they spoke in normal voices.
Lin An’an wandered aimlessly ahead for a while, then suddenly grabbed Feng Wu’s hand. “Wolf Bro, take me around, will you? I don’t know my way around at all.”
Feng Wu asked, “Is there anywhere in particular you want to see?”
Lin An’an thought for a moment. “The soldiers’ training area?”
The base had more than one training ground. Feng Wu took him to the largest one. On one of the open-air fields, a squad of more than ten men was undergoing special training.
“Wolf Bro, after the Zerg stopped attacking the Empire and the Federation a few years ago, what became the main duty of the border garrison?”
“Star pirates, interstellar beasts, and scattered remnants of the Zerg,” Feng Wu said. “The First Legion is stationed in a rather remote part of the Empire. Some smaller pirate bands sometimes break in here to try their luck. There are also interstellar beasts—especially those with special abilities. Sometimes they’re even harder to deal with than the Zerg.”
Lin An’an said, “But overall, since the Zerg haven’t made any major moves, everyone’s pressure should still be much lower than before, right?”
Feng Wu nodded. “Yes.”
Lin An’an suddenly frowned, thinking. “The time when the Zerg went quiet… and the time Alpha Syndrome appeared… seem really close.”
“No more than a year apart,” Feng Wu said. “Alpha Syndrome appeared in the tenth month after the Zerg stopped attacking.”
He had been among the first batch infected with Alpha Syndrome, so the timing was etched especially deeply in his memory.
“Last time Brother Mo said they found modified Zerg near the boulder fields, didn’t he?” Lin An’an lightly bit his lower lip. “Could the Zerg anomaly have something to do with the people from the X Galaxy?”
Feng Wu said, “That possibility can’t be ruled out.”
Lin An’an fell into thought. “The Zerg are violent by nature. They’ve never obeyed any human orders. They only obey the Broodmother.”
He suddenly started. “The X Galaxy people… they couldn’t have taken control of the Broodmother, could they?”
“After the Zerg first began acting abnormally, His Majesty once sent members of the First Legion to the Zerg gathering grounds to investigate. The report back then was that the Broodmother had fallen into slumber for unknown reasons, and without a leader, the Zerg stopped attacking.”
Feng Wu’s brows drew tighter and tighter together. “Not long after that, Alpha appeared. Since the Zerg showed no further movement, His Majesty did not send anyone to pursue the matter more deeply.”
The two looked at each other, and both saw the heaviness in the other’s eyes.
“As for Zerg affairs, they’ve been handled by the First Legion for years now,” Feng Wu said. “Yu Jin, the leader of the First Legion, has now basically been confirmed to be First Prince’s man.”
Lin An’an rubbed his brow in frustration. “What exactly is that bastard Xia Yuanhan trying to do?”
Feng Wu tightened his hold on Lin An’an’s hand. “Don’t worry. I’ll have Modexin spare some people to investigate the Zerg situation.”
Lin An’an nodded. “And Sister Yubai and Octopus Bro too. The Zerg issue doesn’t concern only the Empire. They can help as well.”
They stayed near the base for a short while before Feng Wu led him toward the administrative sector.
Once the medicine had finished brewing, Lin An’an eagerly drank a dose and was instantly so bittered he bared his teeth and grimaced.
Feng Wu popped a mint candy into his mouth. Only after quite a while did Lin An’an’s tightly scrunched features finally relax again.
“This is way too bitter.” Lin An’an looked miserable. At the thought of needing to drink medicine like this every few days, he could not stop frowning.
Feng Wu asked, “There’s no way to improve the taste?”
“It can be adjusted, but it’ll affect the efficacy one way or another.”
Just then, Modexin came over carrying a small metal case.
After giving Feng Wu a military salute, he left.
Lin An’an asked curiously, “What’s this?”
“Some special metals, and the herbs and seeds you wanted.” Feng Wu took the herbs and seeds out of the spatial button and laid them all on the table. “Take a look. Are these the ones?”
Lin An’an’s eyes instantly lit up. “These are exactly the herbs I mentioned before—the ones that can increase an ability core’s capacity!”
“Mm.” Feng Wu counted the herbs and seeds. “Eight kinds in total.”
Lin An’an quickly scanned them over and confirmed, “Everything’s here! Are there any empty rooms left here?”
Feng Wu nodded. “Yes. The top floor is storage, but a few rooms were set aside as spare rooms and have always been empty.” He paused. “They used to be empty. Let me ask Modexin.”
A moment later he said, “A few of them are still empty. Are you going to brew the medicine now?”
“Yes!” Lin An’an could barely hold himself back. “I’ve got the equipment with me in my terminal space. There also needs to be an interval between doses of the ability-core medicine. If I take the first dose a day earlier, then I can take the next dose a day earlier too.”
Feng Wu frowned faintly in disapproval. “You weren’t feeling well just now.”
“Don’t worry, Wolf Bro.” Lin An’an patted his chest. “I slept for a bit in the car just now, so I already feel much better. Besides, brewing medicine is a way of restoring my energy too.”
He carefully gathered up the herbs and smiled at Feng Wu. “If you’re still worried, then stay with me?”
This time, Feng Wu did not refuse.
For many people, the process of brewing medicine was dull and tedious. For those who did not understand pharmaceutical techniques at all, it would be even more boring.
But Feng Wu did not think so.
Whenever the boy stood at the medicine bench brewing, every movement he made flowed so smoothly and naturally that, in Feng Wu’s eyes, it was nothing short of a visual feast—something breathtaking every single time he saw it.
Once the medicine was finished, Lin An’an could not wait to drink a dose. The bitter taste instantly made him bare his teeth in pain again.
Feng Wu popped another mint candy into his mouth. It took a good while before Lin An’an’s contorted expression finally eased.
“This is really too bitter.” Lin An’an looked deeply troubled. At the thought of having to drink something this bitter every few days, he kept frowning nonstop.
Feng Wu asked, “There’s really no way to improve the flavor?”
“It can be done, but no matter what, it’ll affect the efficacy to some degree.” Lin An’an sighed helplessly. “Forget it. Bitter is bitter. At least the effect is really good.”
He closed his eyes and felt for a moment. A slight soreness and swelling came from the area of his ability core, along with a trace of warmth.
“At this rate, once this round of medicine finishes taking effect, my ability core should be able to expand by about one-tenth.”
“One-tenth?” Feng Wu sounded surprised. “That much?”
“Mm. But ability-core expansion has an upper limit. At most it can only expand to twice the original capacity.” Excitement flashed in Lin An’an’s eyes. “Even if it doesn’t reach double, it’s still great. Any amount of expansion is a profit!”
They later reached another training area. On one of the open-air fields, a squad of more than ten men was still undergoing intensive drills.
“Wolf Bro, after the Zerg stopped attacking the Empire and the Federation a few years ago, what became the main duty of the border garrison?”
“Star pirates, interstellar beasts, and scattered remnants of the Zerg,” Feng Wu replied. “The First Legion is stationed in a rather remote part of the Empire…”
He paused for a beat, then looked at Lin An’an and said in a low voice, “So—how does it feel? Sneaking into your own base. Exciting?”
