Chapter 8: The Human Guide (Part 2)
Warm breaths fell against Jin Chi’an’s arm. Under the massage of his mental tendrils, the white tiger fell asleep.
Only after it was fully asleep did Jin Chi’an change from his gentle demeanor just now. His dark, cold gaze was like a sharp blade as it stabbed toward the guide who had fainted to the side.
Jin Chi’an moved the tiger paw pressing on him aside, got up, and walked toward the black-robed guide. The black cloth that had originally wrapped around his face had been torn to shreds, and blood had soaked his brows and eyes.
Jin Chi’an released his mental power. Only after confirming that the other person had completely passed out did he say to Qin Hua beside him, “Bring him back.”
Qin Hua, now released from the mental hypnosis, focused his gaze and looked at the scene before him in disbelief. He tried to find any trace of it in his memories. After standing stunned for a moment, he looked at the white tiger in front of him.
“This one too? Are we taking him back too?”
Jin Chi’an lifted his leg and kicked the black-robed guide over to him. Then he turned and carefully bandaged the bite wound on the white tiger’s arm.
“Of course.”
The corner of Qin Hua’s mouth twitched. “Is Puff not enough for you? Why do you still want to bring a tiger back?”
“This is Felix.”
Qin Hua choked. Resigned, he carried both the tiger and the black-robed guide onto the mecha. On the way back, his mind was filled with the image of the beastly supreme commander waking up, finding out that Qin Hua had let Jin Chi’an act alone, and tearing him to pieces.
The starship’s medical level.
“Boss!”
Edwin ran toward the mecha operated by Qin Hua and carried Felix down from it.
Jin Chi’an reminded him, “He’s in a frenzy period.”
“A frenzy period? But shouldn’t this month’s frenzy period already be over?”
“It’s a mental riot caused by an attack on his consciousness cloud. I already performed emergency treatment just now, but the medical team still needs to examine him.”
Jin Chi’an glanced at the black-robed guide covered in blood on the other end of the mecha and continued, “We caught the person. He’s just a little injured. Please have the medical team treat him. Don’t let him die.”
Medical Teams Three and Four, who had rushed over after hearing the news, took the man. Then they turned back and were about to lift the white tiger onto a stretcher.
Unexpectedly, the white tiger, who had just woken up, forced a low growl through his teeth.
Seeing this, Edwin immediately signaled for the medical team to retreat. Right after that, he also sprang several meters away.
“I’ll do it.”
Jin Chi’an sighed helplessly, then pointed to an empty medical room and gestured to the white tiger.
“Go in.”
The tiger, who had originally been showing hostility because strangers had approached, instantly changed his attitude. Obediently following Jin Chi’an’s instruction, he walked into the medical room. When he passed by Jin Chi’an, he did not forget to rub his head against him.
Under Edwin’s incredulous gaze, Jin Chi’an followed the white tiger into the medical room and locked the door behind them.
“Go sit there.”
Jin Chi’an raised his chin toward one of the medical instruments.
But Felix at this moment seemed unable to understand human speech. He kept climbing onto Jin Chi’an’s shoulders, trying to pounce him down.
An inexplicable emotion surged into Jin Chi’an’s heart. A wave of irritation from who knew where took control of his mind.
Logically speaking, the two of them were only in a political marriage tied together by mutual interests. It was impossible for him to develop feelings for Felix unrelated to those interests. But ever since the white tiger had appeared during the last frenzy period, he had been led around by the nose by the other party. He had not expected that when he heard Felix had gone to intercept the black-robed guide, he would actually feel worried. It was as if an invisible rope was tugging at his emotions.
Looking at the adult tiger before him, who was shaking his head and rubbing against him, Jin Chi’an’s mind suddenly flashed with the image of a young white tiger chasing after a ball of yarn.
Jin Chi’an hurriedly shook his head, dispelling the fleeting thought. He grabbed the tiger by the ear and dragged him toward the medical instrument.
As if sensing Jin Chi’an’s abnormal mood, the white tiger stopped making trouble. He drooped his head, looking exactly like a child being scolded.
“Stretch out your paw.”
Jin Chi’an took the white tiger’s paw and, in revenge, squeezed its paw pads hard twice.
Looking at the wound on the other party’s front paw, which had already scabbed over, Jin Chi’an inwardly sighed at beastmen’s powerful recovery ability. He was about to put the medicine back in its place.
But the white tiger immediately began to whimper and lick the scabbed area. The barbs spreading across his tongue were about to tear the wound open again.
Clearly, Jin Chi’an was very susceptible to this trick.
In his heart, he acted as if he saw nothing, but his hands honestly applied the medicine for the tiger. Finally, when wrapping the bandage, he even thoughtfully tied it into a bow.
After treating the wounds on his body, it was time to rebuild the consciousness cloud.
In the battle just now, Felix’s consciousness cloud had nearly been destroyed into ruins. Yet unexpectedly, this had only triggered his frenzy rather than causing him to die directly from the collapse of his consciousness cloud.
Jin Chi’an injected himself with a mental-power enhancer in advance. He spread his mental tendrils into a tree-like shape and reconnected Felix’s mental pathways.
Rebuilding a consciousness cloud was not simple. But when Jin Chi’an carried out the operation, it was not as difficult as he had imagined. His subconscious kept telling him what to do next.
Jin Chi’an wiped away the sweat sliding down from his forehead. When he came back to himself, Felix’s consciousness cloud had already been rebuilt into the same appearance as when Jin Chi’an first guided him.
Jin Chi’an stood stunned. He looked at Felix, who was sleeping on the medical instrument and had already returned to human form, and felt that his mind was in complete chaos. In the end, unable to think of anything else, Jin Chi’an attributed it to mental-power exhaustion.
By the time Felix opened his eyes again, Jin Chi’an had already left the medical room.
After scanning the medical room, Felix’s gaze finally stopped on the bow tied on the bandage around his arm.
“Unnecessary.”
Felix tore off the bandage. The wound that had originally been caused by biting had already healed, without even leaving a scar.
.
At night, in the guide rest area.
The sharp, piercing sound of a blade scraping across steel entered the room, forcibly waking Lin Chuan, who was still asleep.
Then came a second sound. A third sound. The sounds gradually grew more urgent.
Lin Chuan lifted his eyelids and looked toward the living room door where the sound was coming from.
The door and the sharp blade scraped together, producing a metallic noise. In an instant, Lin Chuan judged that the sound came from a beast’s sharp claws.
Lin Chuan released his mental power to sense the situation. Through the door, he outlined the figure of a tiger.
“Damn. A wild beast? Or a beastman? What’s it doing here in the middle of the night?”
Lin Chuan rummaged through the cabinet and found an energy gun. He raised his hand and aimed it at the door, releasing his mental power to carefully test the tiger’s movements.
The other party was still clinging to the door.
Lin Chuan immediately opened the automatic door through his optical computer command and fired several shots at the unguarded tiger.
His mental tendrils also rushed into the tiger’s mind, but they were blocked outside by a thick layer of mental barrier.
“Damn, what is wrong with this beastman?”
The tiger dodged the energy bullets at extremely high speed and arrived in front of Lin Chuan, forcing out a dissatisfied low growl from his throat.
Suddenly, the lights in the living room turned on. Their two figures appeared clearly before Jin Chi’an.
But from Jin Chi’an’s angle, all he could see was Lin Chuan raising an energy gun, about to shoot the white tiger in front of him.
Perhaps because he smelled Jin Chi’an’s scent, the white tiger immediately withdrew his fangs. He let out an aggrieved whimper and walked toward Jin Chi’an. A few messy loops of paper were still wrapped around his front leg.
“Lin Chuan, what are you doing? Did you shoot at him?”
As soon as Jin Chi’an said this, the white tiger immediately whined, lifting his head to rub against Jin Chi’an’s hand. He looked so wronged, as if he had suffered endless bullying.
“Damn, he’s even a green tea.”
Lin Chuan looked disdainfully at the tiger’s affectionate movements. Compared to its earlier fierce look with bared teeth and claws, it was like a completely different tiger.
“Jin Chi’an, it was him! This guy wanted to break in! Just now, he even wanted to kill me!”
Jin Chi’an lowered his head and looked at the utterly nonaggressive white tiger. He questioned, “Lin Chuan, this is Felix. He’s not a wild beast. How could he want to kill you?”
“Jin Chi’an, are you blinded by lard? He’s a beastman sneaking into the guide rest area at night. What does he want? To live a married life with you?”
Jin Chi’an looked speechlessly at the bristling Lin Chuan, then turned and gestured for the white tiger to enter the room.
After receiving permission, the white tiger raised his tail high into the air. Before leaving, he even rubbed his tail against Jin Chi’an’s palm.
“Jin Chi’an, this is the guide dormitory. What do you mean by bringing a man back? I don’t agree.”
“Enough. He’s not going into your room.”
Jin Chi’an turned and left, leaving Lin Chuan frozen in place by himself.
Jin Chi’an closed the bedroom door and saw that the white tiger had familiarly climbed onto his bed as if he owned the place.
Looking at the loops of paper wrapped around the tiger’s front paw, Jin Chi’an sighed helplessly and reached out to tear the tissue paper off.
But before Jin Chi’an’s hand could touch the tissue, the white tiger unwillingly pressed his front paw beneath his body and made a protesting purring sound at him.
Looking at that front paw wrapped full of tissue, it was not hard for Jin Chi’an to recognize that this was the area injured earlier that morning. But at this moment, there was not a single trace of injury left.
“Felix, your hand has already healed.”
Having worked at a nursery before, Jin Chi’an understood the thoughts of these fluffballs all too well.
Seeing that the white tiger was unmoved, Jin Chi’an could only say helplessly, “Stretch out your paw. I’ll tie a new one for you.”
Having received an answer he was satisfied with, the white tiger contentedly stretched out the front paw that had been wrapped into a lump with tissue.
Jin Chi’an tore off the crumpled ball of tissue and rewrapped a bow around the white tiger’s already healed wound.
After coaxing the mentally excited Felix into sleep, Jin Chi’an lay on the bed in exhaustion and quickly fell asleep.
Amid his steady breathing, the white tiger gradually opened his eyes. Like a wild beast patrolling its territory, he inspected Jin Chi’an’s room, finally stopping in front of a ball of yarn on the floor.
The white tiger lowered his head and sniffed it all over. The ball of yarn clearly carried only Jin Chi’an’s scent, yet several tufts of feline fur were stuck to it.
The white tiger’s pupils shrank into small circles. Furious, he was about to let out a low growl at those tufts of cat fur, but because the person in the room was sleeping, he did not dare act recklessly.
In the end, he could only pick up the yarn ball in his mouth and leave the room, looking back every few steps.
The next day, in the guide medical room.
“Reporting to the commander. The anti-mental-toxin serum has lost effectiveness. The patient is now showing symptoms such as mental-power weakness and declining recovery ability of the consciousness cloud.”
Lin Chuan took the report on the injured guide from Rear Reconnaissance Team One. His gaze passed through the door and looked toward the guide trembling all over on the hospital bed.
“Poison dart frog mental toxin. This is the first time I’ve heard of it.”
Jin Chi’an snatched the test report from his hand.
“In that case, why not ask the person himself?”
Jin Chi’an looked at the medical team member in front of him.
“May I ask which ward the enemy guide captured yesterday is in?”
“Please follow me.”
The medical staff led them to a door. Two beastmen standing guard blocked their path.
“The supreme commander is interrogating the prisoner. Please wait a moment.”
“Felix?”
