Chapter 20: The Chance
“Lin Chuan.”
Qin Hua gnawed on the apple in his hand, looking completely at ease, without the slightest appearance of a patient.
Seeing this, Lin Chuan slowly moved to his side. At some point, he had taken out an energy gun, and it was now pressed against Qin Hua’s temple.
“I knew something was wrong with your diagnosis. Aside from external injuries, every other indicator was actually normal.”
Lin Chuan narrowed his eyes.
“Qin Hua, where’s your mental illness?”
“What mental illness?”
Qin Hua looked at him blankly and raised his hand to push the fully charged energy gun to the other side.
“Stop arguing. Kashemir Zerg.”
Without another word, Lin Chuan extended offensive mental tendrils and attacked Qin Hua’s consciousness cloud.
Countless mental tendrils split into branches inside the other party’s consciousness cloud. In just a moment, the originally clear mental network became a complete mess.
“Why isn’t that thing there?”
Lin Chuan stared suspiciously at his brain.
With the pathways of his consciousness cloud severed, Qin Hua immediately felt dizzy and heavy-headed. Weakly, he explained, “There really isn’t anything. That thing only came in for a while, then ran out.”
“Oh, so you’re saying that zerg took over your brain, but only to help repair your mental illness, then gave up control of your body again?”
“Pretty much,” Qin Hua said sincerely.
Seeing that Lin Chuan still looked unconvinced, Jin Chi’an extended his mental tendrils and stopped Lin Chuan’s prepared second mental attack.
“There’s no one else’s mental power in his consciousness cloud.”
Lin Chuan was just about to refute him when a notification from the main control rang out on his optical computer:
Members of command, please proceed to the conference room immediately.
The conference room.
When the group arrived, the empire’s military high-ranking officials and Iskan’s imperial military had already taken their seats.
Jin Chi’an and Lin Chuan consciously sat on the empire’s side.
Sensing footsteps behind him, Jin Chi’an hesitated for a moment before immediately turning his head. The beastman marshal following behind him did not seem to have any intention of turning away.
“Sit across from me.”
Jin Chi’an pressed his lips together and sent him a message on the optical computer.
“Why aren’t we sitting together?”
“Sit. Back. Down.”
Reading the gritted-teeth anger in those three short words, Felix could only accept his fate and sit in the empty seat beside Aphrodite.
The meeting officially began.
“Regarding the Kashemir Zerg race, according to the information currently held by our forces, we can determine that the species’ current stage of evolution is divided into two generations. The first generation consists of non-humanoid creatures with multiple sharp, blade-like tendrils. The second generation consists of parasitic organisms capable of invading the brains of higher lifeforms.”
On the central screen in the conference room, the different appearances of the Kashemir Zerg race were displayed in detail.
One of the images showed Qin Hua with his abdomen pierced through, along with zerg body parts scattered all over the ground. The only thing missing was the giant head resembling an insect egg.
Compared to Lin Chuan, who had seen the scene in person, Jin Chi’an was seeing it for the first time. His brows furrowed slightly, and after a moment of silence, he said, “He survived that? Was he parasitized?”
Lin Chuan felt a chill from his calm appearance.
“You didn’t spare him either.”
While the two were speaking, the image on the screen instantly changed into a surveillance video.
High above the burial ground, District Fourteen’s Sky Eye had recorded 002’s full appearance: a face unmistakably belonging to the imperial prince, Brayden Charlemagne.
Jin Chi’an’s expression remained calm as he listened to the summary from the imperial military.
“According to the information brought back by the Allied Forces’ Frontline Reconnaissance Team Two and the recent changes within the imperial royal family, we can confirm that there is zerg infiltration within the imperial royal family.”
As the atmosphere in the conference room became unusually tense, Amelie slowly spoke.
“Three days ago, this royal family member’s mental deterioration was confirmed to have been cured. Because of this, the royal family has restarted the District One banquet that had been suspended for twenty years. According to the invitations sent out, most invited guests are from District One’s high-bloodline families.”
“High-bloodline families?”
Lin Chuan looked in confusion at Jin Chi’an, who seemed distracted beside him.
“Your District One is pretty feudal. You even rank bloodlines?”
Jin Chi’an stared at the invitation sent by the empire on his optical computer. His tone carried a trace of displeasure.
“High bloodline generally refers to families where more than seventy percent of members awaken sentinel or guide abilities. And only members whose mental bodies are high-level mammals are included in the calculation. This is also one of the reasons why the Charlemagne faction, despite suffering from hereditary mental illness, has been able to sit firmly on the throne.”
At the front of the conference room, Amelie continued, “To further confirm the Zerg race’s movements and ensure that the empire’s District One high-bloodline families are not infiltrated by aliens, our military has decided to dispatch invited Allied Forces members to the banquet site to investigate. The remaining members will stand by in the outer star region of District One.”
Amelie switched the information on the screen to member profiles. Among the five people listed was Jin Chi’an’s name.
“I object.”
Aphrodite, who had been resting with his eyes closed since the start of the meeting, slowly opened his beastified eyes. He stared at the imperial military high-ranking officials seated opposite him and raised his hand to press down Felix’s clenched fist.
“The scale of the current infiltration of the royal family cannot be determined. The empire’s proposed action is too aggressive.”
“Crown Prince of Iskan, according to the agreement between our two countries, you only need to support the empire’s actions,” the military official threatened.
“Oh?”
The other party’s unfriendly tone made a trace of displeasure flash through Aphrodite’s eyes.
“The agreement with Iskan was made only with the imperial royal family. Now that the royal family has been infiltrated by aliens, the agreement is no longer valid.”
After saying this, Aphrodite was about to stand and leave, but an ill-timed voice interrupted him.
“I agree with this operation arrangement.”
Jin Chi’an connected his mental power to his optical computer, sensing the invitation carved with mental power. Only when his mental tendrils sensed that this mental power belonged to a human guide, Oshta, did he stop.
This obvious trap actually made him interested in the banquet. Jin Chi’an could not help curving his lips. When he raised his eyes again, he met Felix’s resentful, wife-like gaze.
“Looks like the two of you haven’t discussed this properly, Felix.”
Aphrodite’s expression shifted from surprise at first to something quite interested.
Before Felix could respond, Amelie looked in satisfaction at the Iskan emperor, who was no longer blocking them.
“Since everyone has no objections, command will formulate the specific plan. Meeting dismissed.”
“Felix, wait a moment.”
Jin Chi’an jogged to catch up with Felix. In a moment of carelessness, he bumped into the other party’s back.
“Felix?”
Jin Chi’an covered the tip of his nose, which hurt from the collision, and looked up at the person in front of him, who was a head taller than him.
“Do you want me to listen to your explanation?”
Felix turned around and lowered his head to meet his gaze.
He clearly looked angry, but because of the faint red at the corners of his eyes, he seemed especially wronged.
Jin Chi’an felt a little uneasy from his direct stare. He reached out to hook Felix’s palm, but the other party mercilessly dodged.
“Why did you accept the empire’s arrangement?”
“I…”
“Was it because from the very beginning, you married me only because of the empire’s arrangement?”
“So I’m just part of your work?”
“Even if it started that way, it doesn’t matter. It also doesn’t matter if you didn’t remember me. But you hugged me last night. You even rode my beast form…”
“So is our relationship still the same as it was at the beginning? A marriage alliance for the empire’s mission?”
Felix’s string of words pressed down on him until he could barely breathe. Every word seemed like an accusation that he had broken faith.
Jin Chi’an helplessly sighed. He stood on tiptoe, pressed Felix’s head into the crook of his neck, and explained softly, “Felix, from beginning to end, I have never wanted to separate from you. But I have to figure some things out.”
“Is this matter very important?”
“Very important.”
Jin Chi’an rubbed the back of his head and said gently, “All right, stop saying angry things. Even if the marriage alliance had a purpose at first, didn’t it also let me find my little tiger again?”
“You didn’t recognize me. Father told you.”
Felix’s complaint made Jin Chi’an unable to help laughing.
“Oh? Then what should I do?”
“Can I sleep in the room tonight in human form?”
Perhaps because he had not expected Felix to say this, Jin Chi’an asked with interest, “Why do you think I wouldn’t let your human form enter the room?”
“Because you only like my beast form. When I’m in human form, you ignore me and even give me a cold face.”
“Who exactly is giving who a cold face?”
Jin Chi’an pinched the corner of his eye, remembering Felix’s foul expression when they had just gotten married. Compared with the delicate, wronged-husband appearance before him now, it was practically heaven and earth.
But thinking that he himself had also had problems, he said nothing more.
Night fell.
Jin Chi’an, whose wound had mostly healed, moved back into the guide dormitory. At this moment, two people were squeezed onto the narrow single bed, making the room, which maintained a comfortable temperature, feel especially hot.
And yet, back when there had been one person and one tiger squeezed together, he had not felt this way at all.
Jin Chi’an tossed and turned on the bed. Only when he turned and saw the handsome face of the person beside him, completely relaxed in sleep, did he realize that this heat was not quite right.
Looking at the person before him, who had already fallen asleep, irritation surged in Jin Chi’an’s heart. He forcefully pinched the tiger ears the other party had deliberately revealed before sleeping.
“Wake up.”
The sudden call woke Felix. Probably because he was beside someone familiar, he had slept especially deeply.
In his daze, he only saw Jin Chi’an’s somewhat annoyed expression. Immediately afterward came the questioning words by his ear.
“Felix, did you make this request just so you could lie under the blanket with me and purely sleep?”
“Mm?”
Because he had been forcibly booted awake, Felix looked innocently at Jin Chi’an, who had sat up. Mistakenly thinking he had done something wrong, he reached for the corner of the other party’s clothes, only for Jin Chi’an to dodge him perfectly.
However, Jin Chi’an was not feeling well either.
As the hot sensation in his body gradually deepened, he impatiently tugged at the blanket.
Seeing that the other party still looked tired, he simply straddled him directly.
“We start preparing for the operation tomorrow, Felix. You only have one chance. Are you sure you don’t—”
Before he could finish speaking, a strong hand pressed him into an embrace. Immediately afterward, that hand reached toward his waist.
A warm breath fell against his earlobe at the same time. Then came the voice of his own marshal, filled with desire.
“Brother~”
