Chapter 73: Confrontation
After releasing the paper crane, Mo Qi looked out the car window toward the direction of the research institute. His expression gradually turned serious.
Just moments ago, he had suddenly sensed a powerful fluctuation of demonic energy coming from the research institute. It seemed Professor Frank wasn’t planning to rely solely on public opinion as a weapon—he must have done something in secret as well.
Meanwhile, Mo Xiu couldn’t sense these abnormalities. He pulled his hat brim lower, thinking that if he didn’t disguise himself, getting recognized by these people would probably cause trouble.
Listening to Mo Qi really was the right choice.
He always looks lazy and relaxed, but in reality his thinking is much more thorough than mine.
But with so many people rushing toward their apartment, he wondered how Cheng Cheng and the others were doing.
“It’s already so late. How did the news spread so quickly? And why isn’t anyone sleeping? Doesn’t that seem a bit strange?” Mo Xiu frowned and asked the person beside him.
Originally, Mo Qi had wanted Dayong to accompany him, but Mo Xiu refused. The guy was still a bit reckless; it would be better for him to stay with his brother, since Xiong Mingyuan could at least keep him in line.
The person Mo Xiu asked happened to be Xiao Hei, the one whose demonic energy Mo Qi had previously removed. Although he had lost his ability, he felt lucky just to have kept his life, so he was now even more enthusiastic about helping out.
Looking at the growing crowd around them, Xiao Hei said:
“It seems Elder Zhuang’s group stirred things up and mobilized a lot of people. Tonight they suddenly organized some kind of rally. They said people who showed up might get food, so lots of people came out and headed to the square. On the way there, they heard the news from the research institute.”
Mo Xiu immediately understood.
There was no such thing as so many coincidences—it was clearly someone stirring things up behind the scenes.
The research institute’s real target was probably him and Mo Qi. He didn’t know how they had discovered them so quickly, but he couldn’t let Cheng Cheng and the others be dragged into this because of them.
Not wanting to attract too much attention, he told the people following him to stay where they were while he quietly approached the apartment alone.
But halfway there, when he reached the backyard where they usually cultivated plants, he saw several sneaky figures.
Before he could react, one of them rushed straight toward him.
Then he heard a very familiar voice shout beside his ear:
“Brother Mo!”
Mo Xiu focused his gaze and saw that the three people were Cheng Cheng, Xie Wu, and Xiao Wan.
“Why did all of you come out?” Seeing that they were safe, Mo Xiu felt relieved, though he was also confused.
Xie Wu pulled a delicately folded paper crane from his pocket and said:
“It was Brother Qi. He sent the paper crane to warn us. That’s how we reacted in time. Otherwise we would’ve been trapped by those people.”
“A paper crane?” Mo Xiu’s mouth twitched when he heard this.
The line sounded increasingly fantastical.
This was supposed to be the apocalypse—why did it feel like he had suddenly wandered into some kind of cultivation drama?
But none of that mattered.
On the way here, he had already checked the base’s situation thoroughly. Now that Cheng Cheng and the others were safe, what he cared about most was Mo Qi’s situation.
“Alright, since you’re all fine, come with me,” Mo Xiu said.
“Where are we going?” Cheng Cheng asked in confusion.
Only then did he notice Mo Xiu was alone. Mo Qi wasn’t behind him as usual.
“Huh? Where’s the boss? Why isn’t he here?!”
Cheng Cheng sounded worried, but Mo Xiu had already turned around and started walking away.
“Follow me. We’ll see him soon,” he said as he walked.
Meanwhile, in the car approaching the research institute, Xiong Gangyong looked restless.
Suddenly he said to Mo Qi, “Brother Qi… I don’t know why, but I’ve got a really bad feeling.”
Mo Qi raised an eyebrow.
Perhaps it was the instinct of a beast. Sometimes people with simpler minds had sharper intuition. It seemed he should stay more alert as well.
When they finally reached the area near the research institute and got out of the car, they happened to see Mo Xiu and the others not far away.
It looked like his lover had used wind abilities again to hurry over. He hadn’t expected him to arrive so quickly.
Behind Mo Xiu were Cheng Cheng, Xie Wu, and Xiao Wan. Everyone looked fine, and Cheng Cheng was even enthusiastically waving at him.
However, Mo Xiu’s abilities weren’t limitless. Although his ability level was high, he couldn’t use wind abilities to carry too many people at once. So only his teammates were with him.
The others who had previously followed them were nowhere to be seen—most likely still rushing here on foot.
Mo Qi hadn’t expected Mo Xiu to arrive this fast. After all, he had deliberately sent him away earlier.
This research institute was far too suspicious. And after hearing about Mo Xiu’s past life before rebirth, he knew this place definitely wasn’t somewhere that held good memories for him.
But seeing the focused expression on the young man’s face—and his pure concern—Mo Qi felt relieved.
Perhaps he had been overthinking things.
Xiong Mingyuan was very familiar with the surroundings, so he had parked the car close to the institute but in a hidden spot. Logically, they shouldn’t have been discovered so quickly.
Yet after walking forward a short distance, a group of people suddenly emerged from the shadows.
Among the leaders were two or three unfamiliar faces, but Mo Xiu recognized them. Though he hadn’t seen them often, they always appeared whenever something important happened in the base.
He glanced at Xiong Mingyuan—and sure enough, the man’s expression had grown serious.
Stepping forward, Xiong Mingyuan asked:
“Did Elder Zhuang send you?”
The man in the lead, wearing a gray jacket, showed a hint of amusement on his face.
“Big Xiong, I think you’ve lost your mind. Don’t you know which side you’re supposed to stand on? If you keep making trouble like this, we won’t be able to protect you.”
Xiong Mingyuan’s jaw instantly tightened, and he clenched his teeth.
Protect him?
When had they ever protected him?
If Xu Liang hadn’t died back then, he didn’t even know whether he would have been able to hold onto the position of base commander.
Still, he forced himself to suppress his anger and said:
“Old Liang, I don’t understand what you mean. I only came with some friends to take a look because of the rumors spreading about the research institute.
But you’ve gathered so many people here and look so nervous. Isn’t that a bit unnecessary?”
Xiong Mingyuan clearly hoped the other side would give him some face.
But the man called Old Liang obviously didn’t care.
A contemptuous expression appeared on his face. He sneered and waved his hand toward the people behind him.
They immediately spread out in a semicircle and began closing in on Mo Xiu and Mo Qi’s group.
At this point, Mo Xiu knew there was no point talking.
Without wasting words, arcs of lightning spread from beneath his feet.
In the next moment, several of the people who had been arrogantly approaching them suddenly convulsed from the electric shock and collapsed to the ground.
