Chapter 72: Disguise
All of this happened silently, so no one knew what Mo Qi had done. On the surface, he hadn’t even moved.
But among the people who had just entered, one suddenly stopped walking. Soon after, his body began to twitch slightly as if out of his control. His skin turned bluish-black, his eyes became cloudy, and his pupils started to redden.
It was obvious—these were signs of zombification.
Seeing this, the others immediately became tense. Some grabbed their weapons, some had already begun preparing their powers, but many more felt reluctant when facing a comrade they had once fought alongside.
Instead, most of them turned their attention to Xiong Mingyuan. After all, their base leader had just said that many of the zombie viruses in their bodies were new types implanted by the research institute—and that they could be removed.
Did this mean the person’s condition could actually be cured? That they didn’t have to personally kill their friend?
Xiong Mingyuan also felt nervous. After all, this was the first time he had seen the zombie virus that Mo Xiu and Mo Qi had mentioned actually take effect on someone around him.
He hurriedly turned to look at Mo Qi, only to see Mo Qi nod slightly to Mo Xiu beside him.
Mo Xiu immediately spoke to everyone.
“Don’t worry. Base Chief Xiong wouldn’t lie to you. Some special equipment has been installed in this room. Stay away from him for a moment—he’ll recover soon.”
While Mo Xiu was speaking, Mo Qi had already stopped stimulating the demonic energy inside the man’s body.
After a brief pause, he slowly began extracting all the remaining demonic energy from the man’s body, drawing it back into himself just like before.
Everyone watched with their own eyes as a person who had already half-transformed into a zombie gradually returned to normal. Shock appeared on all their faces.
If they had still been skeptical about Xiong Mingyuan’s explanation before, now the evidence was right in front of them—there was no way not to believe it.
Even Xiao Hei, who had just been lamenting the loss of his ability, patted his chest in lingering fear. He felt lucky he had followed a good boss. Otherwise, he might really have turned into a zombie.
“My god, Boss was actually telling the truth. The research institute really secretly implanted zombie viruses into our bodies. That’s terrifying!”
“Exactly! If the base chief hadn’t discovered it in time, wouldn’t the Shanhe Base have fallen sooner or later?”
“Why would the professor do something like this?”
“I think he’s simply evil. Isn’t this basically making enemies of all humanity?”
“Not necessarily. Maybe he wants to use it to threaten and control us.”
People around them spoke all at once. The scene looked chaotic, but it was obvious that their attitude toward the research institute—and Professor Frank—had undergone a fundamental change.
Realizing this, Xiong Mingyuan secretly breathed a sigh of relief, grateful that he had listened to Mo Xiu and Mo Qi. Otherwise, they might all have been doomed.
But in truth, the number of people he could truly trust and rely on was only this many. After all, the base wasn’t entirely under his control.
Thinking about that made him feel uneasy.
“Alright, stop arguing,” Xiong Mingyuan said. “From here on, remember to follow orders.”
After saying this, he looked toward Mo Xiu and Mo Qi, clearly waiting for them to speak.
“Mo Xiu, let’s split up,” Mo Qi said. “The research institute making such a big move is definitely unusual.
You go with Dayong and the others to check the nearby bases. I’ll go with Base Chief Xiong to the research institute and see what’s going on.”
After saying that, the man somehow produced a mask and a cap and put them on Mo Xiu, saying, “This should make things more convenient.”
Mo Xiu touched the disguise on his face and frowned slightly.
The mask covered most of his face, and with the cap added, even someone standing close might not recognize him—especially at night.
Was this really convenient… or just suspicious?
But Mo Qi shook his head and leaned closer, whispering softly.
“I put a little illusion spell on you. Don’t worry—it won’t attract anyone’s attention.
I just think adding the hat and mask will be safer. You might need it later.”
Mo Xiu was still confused, but he knew the person he loved would never harm him, so he obediently left things as they were before heading out.
The two split into separate groups.
Mo Qi even took a moment to make a paper crane using a talisman. After turning the crane invisible, he sent it flying toward Xie Wu to deliver a message, telling them to stay alert and be careful.
When Mo Qi produced the paper crane, Xiong Mingyuan—who was sitting in the same car heading toward the research institute—was completely stunned.
Before he could say anything, however, Xiong Gangyong, who was driving, showed a look of disdain, as if Xiong Mingyuan were being ridiculously ignorant.
Xiong Mingyuan was so annoyed he had to restrain himself from smacking the back of his brother’s head.
Xiong Gangyong didn’t notice at all. He kept driving proudly.
After all, he had seen far more of Brother Qi’s abilities than his older brother had!
Meanwhile, ever since learning that Mo Qi was actually the Demon Lord, Mo Xiu wasn’t worried about his safety.
He knew that even if Mo Qi didn’t slaughter enemies left and right, protecting himself would be absolutely no problem.
But Mo Xiu still didn’t fully understand Mo Qi’s true strength. At the same time, he was deeply puzzled by the professor’s actions.
When he went to check the nearby situation, he discovered that the news had spread even faster than he expected.
Although it was already late at night, the research institute’s previous reputation had clearly been quite effective.
Unexpectedly, Professor Frank seemed quite skilled at playing the victim.
Mo Xiu heard several versions of rumors, but their general message was the same: someone had slandered and spread false accusations about the professor.
Because of this, the professor was said to be deeply hurt and nearly unable to remain in the base.
This stirred up sympathy among the people. Many were saying they would find the ones spreading the rumors and clear the professor and the research institute’s name.
Then somehow, more rumors began circulating.
The group responsible for both making and spreading the rumors… was said to be Mo Xiu’s team.
As a result, public anger was boiling.
Many people now regarded Professor Frank as the key figure who could develop a cure for the zombie virus—in other words, the hope of the apocalypse.
And now such a great person had suffered such injustice.
Of course they had to uphold justice.
Thus, Mo Xiu’s entire team had become the target of everyone’s hostility.
Looking at the crowd already surging toward the apartment where their team lived, Mo Xiu touched the mask on his face.
Only then did he suddenly understand why Mo Qi had said before he left—that he might actually need it.
