Chapter 206: After the Recruitment Ended
The Crescent Group’s recruitment of ability-users had drawn a lot of attention. Once the recruitment ended, the identities of the new hires were quickly dug up by various powers, and their value rose sharply.
“Brother Gang, you’re back?” Zhou Gang had just returned from Crescent Group to his own security company.
His company was a bit of a mess, looking almost like a fly-by-night operation.
“Brother Gang, congratulations on joining Crescent Group and becoming one of them!” The news of his hire had already spread, and everyone was beaming.
Zhou Gang smiled. “Thanks, thanks.”
“Brother Gang, did you see Chu Feng? Lately people talk about him like he has three heads and six arms.”
Zhou Gang raised an eyebrow. “He looks pretty normal.” But the fluctuations of his power were vast, like an insurmountable mountain.
“Boss, did you see Illya? My little brother’s a huge fan—he asked me to get an autograph for him,” He Fei said.
Zhou Gang rolled his eyes. “I just joined; how could I ask the boss for an autograph? And seriously—your brother ignores beauties like Zhuang Feixue and likes Illya? No matter how good Illya looks, he’s still a man.” If you were going to ask for an autograph, Zhuang Feixue’s would make a lot more sense.
He Fei smiled and said, “My little brother insists on idolizing Illya, so there’s nothing I can do about it!”
“Here are four Bone-Strengthening Elixirs. Take them and split them with Dali and the others,” Zhou Gang said.
“Boss, did Chu Feng give these to you?”
Zhou Gang nodded. “Yes, it’s the joining gift.”
“That’s great. I heard some rumor somewhere saying Chu Feng was stingy and only gave a few thousand yuan as salary. I was a little worried,” He Fei said.
“Sounds like nonsense the moment you hear it. Whoever made that up wasn’t even trying,” one of the members beside him said.
“That’s what I thought too. Chu Feng literally bought a ten-billion-yuan building in one go.”
Zhou Gang frowned slightly, thinking to himself: This rumor might not be entirely baseless… it seems like there’s a hint of truth to it.
At the National Bureau of Paranormal Abilities.
“Xiao Chao! You really got hired?!”
As soon as Chen Chao returned to the Bureau, several ability-users surrounded him. Chen Chao was young, and quite a few at the Bureau would casually look out for him, so he was well-liked.
Chen Chao clasped his hands behind his back and said smugly, “My throwing knives never miss. Getting hired was only natural.”
“You shoot a few knives and then have to rest for hours before you can use them again. Does Chu Feng know that?”
Chen Chao’s face flushed red. He wasn’t sure if Chu Feng had noticed his lack of stamina during the interview.
“I won’t stay this weak forever,” Chen Chao said.
Chen Chao had a little underling — young, but clever and quick-witted — who made him a fake résumé and submitted it to the Crescent Group. People at the Bureau thought Chen Chao was being reckless, but no one stopped him; they were happy to watch the show.
No one expected Chen Chao to actually slip through the first round with that résumé.
Quite a few people at the Bureau had been eliminated in the first round, so Chen Chao making it through with a fake résumé left them speechless. Even though he passed round one, most figured he’d be exposed and fail in round two. But Chu Feng didn’t play by the usual rules — several highly capable ability-users from the Bureau were rejected, and Chen Chao somehow passed.
Naturally, a lot of Bureau members were envious, jealous, and resentful.
From upstairs, Qian Jiajia looked down at Chen Chao surrounded by people and shook his head. “This kid’s a fool. I heard Chu Feng’s joining gift was a Strengthening Serum, but he traded it for Bone-Strengthening Elixirs and gave them to a few kids.”
Mu Linlang took a deep breath and said, “Maybe that’s exactly what Chu Feng liked about him.”
Qian Jiajia nodded. “True enough.”
Inside an office.
Shen Yutong looked at the recruitment list. “The abilities Chu Feng hired aren’t particularly special.”
“He seems to favor strength-type users.”
Shen Yutong nodded. “I can tell.” Out of eight hires, four were strength users.
“One of the strength users isn’t from our Bureau.”
Strength abilities were fairly common, and the Bureau needed large numbers of such ordinary ability-users. Their benefits were decent, so most joined the Bureau.
“Right, this Hang Ming seems to have awakened his ability recently. Not sure if it’s just that he hasn’t joined us yet, or that he doesn’t want to. Miss Shen, should we approach him?”
Shen Yutong shook her head. “No need. Let it be voluntary.”
Chu Feng had already hired him, and reaching out now would look like poaching. Besides, several of Chu Feng’s hires were already from the Bureau, and there was no need to push for the rest.
“Didn’t expect Chen Chao to get hired.” Shen Yutong shook her head, still unclear on Chu Feng’s selection criteria.
“Could it be because two of the interviewers were kids? Kids would naturally pick other kids.”
Shen Yutong frowned. “Maybe.”
Everyone who interviewed that day, whether they were hired or not, seemed to mention those two children. “I heard they’re stunningly beautiful!”
“Yeah, apparently very beautiful. Supposedly relatives of Illya.”
Shen Yutong thought to herself: If they’re related to Illya, then being good-looking isn’t surprising.
“Illya, who’s with Chu Feng, seems to have the ability to detect lies.”
Shen Yutong glanced at the person beside her. “Did you find something?”
“Tong Yu said her ability felt suppressed.” Tong Yu was a psychic who had also applied to Crescent Group but hadn’t passed.
The Bureau had more than one psychic; stronger ones could suppress weaker ones to some degree…
After recruiting the ability-users, it was time to recruit ordinary people.
Compared to ability-user recruitment, the ordinary hiring was much simpler, and soon Chu Feng’s team was in place.
Chu Feng entered Crescent Tower and saw the entire building had changed dramatically. He looked at Zhuang Feixue and said, “Sis, you’ve hired a lot of beautiful women!”
Zhuang Feixue smiled. “Plenty of beautiful women came to apply, so… this is how it turned out.”
Chu Feng glanced at a female manager at the reception desk and thought she looked familiar.
“Miss, have we met before?” Chu Feng asked as he stepped forward.
Zhuang Feixue frowned slightly. “This is our newly hired department manager, Riya. Her grandfather is a botanical expert. Do you know her?”
Chu Feng: “…She just looks familiar. I can’t quite remember.”
Riya smiled. “Mr. Chu, you have a forgetful memory. We’ve indeed met — I bought some wood carvings from your Crescent Woodcarving Store before.”
Chu Feng blinked. “Ah! I remember now.”
Back then, he had made good money selling wood carvings, and Riya had bought quite a few.
If she had bought that many carvings, she was clearly wealthy. His company must be very attractive indeed — even rich young ladies were willing to come work for him.
“Miss Li, how come you’re working here for me?”
Riya smiled and said, “I really like the working environment and future prospects of the Crescent Group.”
Chu Feng nodded. “Prospects? Does our company really have a promising future?”
Riya smiled again. “Of course. On the Top 100 Companies Potential Ranking, Crescent Group is ranked number one. In the industry, it’s recognized that Crescent has great prospects.”
Chu Feng raised his eyebrows, thinking to himself: Top 100 Companies Potential Ranking—so there’s even such a thing.
“You’ve got a good eye. Work hard.”
Back when Riya was at the Crescent Woodcarving Shop, she bought quite a few carvings, then later resold some and made a tidy profit.
After the woodcarving shop closed, news about the carvings gradually faded away.
However, not long ago, Chu Feng’s reputation skyrocketed. People dug up the fact that the Crescent Woodcarving Shop had been run by him, and that the carvings might be related to the mysterious alchemist behind him. The prices of the carvings rose again.
Riya came to apply at Crescent Group mainly because she valued the internal employee benefits.
Crescent Group employees could purchase various elixirs at internal discount prices. Although each person was limited in how many they could buy, it was still a nice perk.
Riya’s family was reasonably well-off, but in the Capital they didn’t rank high enough to have any special access. Even though she wanted the elixirs, she hadn’t found a way to get them.
Now that she had joined Crescent Group, it was only a matter of time before she had a chance to buy them…
After the recruitment ended, Chu Feng took Illya back to Crescent Village. As soon as he returned to the real world, he got a call from Lin Zhihao. Lin Zhihao had arrived outside Crescent Group but had been stopped at the door by the company’s security guards.
Lin Zhihao argued with the guards for over an hour, but they still wouldn’t let him in.
“Brother Feng,” Lin Zhihao called out when he saw Chu Feng.
Chu Feng smiled and went up to him. “What brings you here? Did you fly?”
Lin Zhihao nodded. “Yeah.”
His previous job had always been looking after the kids. After Chu Feng took Gray and the others away, Lin Zhihao had nothing to do. Then, after seeing a video online of Chu Feng killing the Wolf King, he couldn’t resist coming over.
The guards, seeing how familiar Lin Zhihao and Chu Feng were, grew nervous. “Sorry, boss, we didn’t know he was your relative.” A few days earlier, Zhuang Ming had come by and been let in, but afterward the guards had been scolded. Since then, they had tightened things up whenever anyone claimed to be a relative of Chu Feng.
Chu Feng shook his head. “It’s fine. You didn’t do anything wrong.”
So many “distant relatives” came looking for him—if they all got in, he’d be swamped.
Chu Feng frowned. “Zhihao, if you’re coming over, just call me directly. I could use my teleportation ability to bring you here.”
After the earthquake, many large birds seemed to appear. One had even collided with a plane, causing it to crash and killing many. Air travel was no longer as safe as before. But traveling by car wasn’t very safe either, since many roads had been destroyed by the quake.
And after the quake, many vicious beasts had appeared—there had even been incidents of beasts attacking villages.
Lin Zhihao said helplessly, “I did call you, but couldn’t get through. I couldn’t wait, so I came on my own. It’s not actually that dangerous.”
“How are things back home?” Chu Feng asked.
“Back home’s fairly peaceful. You know, in many places hit by the quake, dangerous beasts have appeared, and many residents have suffered tragedies. Our hometown didn’t have a quake, but with no danger, there’s also no opportunity. A lot of people are thinking of heading to the new mountains to open up land.”
Chu Feng frowned. “A lot of people going?”
Lin Zhihao nodded. “Yeah! They say the new mountains are full of treasures—century-old ginseng, lingzhi, even caterpillar fungus as thick as your finger, all over the place. Just one lucky trip could make you rich overnight, earning a lifetime’s worth of money.”
“Many people going?” Chu Feng asked again.
Lin Zhihao nodded. “Yep! It’s a rare chance. Now there are many civilian exploration teams recruiting people. Because of the higher danger everywhere, gun control isn’t as strict as before. Some of these teams are quite high-level, even having ability-users.”
“Teams with ability-users have stricter recruitment standards.”
Chu Feng frowned. “I see…”
Lin Zhihao looked at him. “You really didn’t know?”
Chu Feng shook his head. “Haven’t paid much attention.”
He had been too busy lately—with company affairs, Crescent Village matters, elixirs, potions—there was too much on his plate.
