Chapter 178: Elves Who Love Barbecue
After chatting for a while, Chu Feng and the shaman briefly discussed the tribe’s future development.
“Let’s go see the elves,” Chu Feng suggested, curiosity piqued now that the serious talk was done.
Illya mumbled, “Pure-blooded elves are all very beautiful.”
“Really that beautiful? Still not as pretty as you.”
Illya shook his head. “No, they’re extremely good-looking. Better than me.”
Chu Feng shook his head. “No matter how pretty the elves are, you’ll always be the most beautiful to me.”
Illya smiled. “Really?”
Chu Feng nodded. “Of course it’s true.”
The shaman waved them away, seeming like he didn’t want to watch Chu Feng and Illya being all lovey-dovey. “Go take a look. Right about now, those two elves should be barbecuing on the castle terrace.”
Chu Feng asked in surprise, “Barbecue? Elves?”
The shaman nodded. “Yup.”
Chu Feng: “…Aren’t elves supposed to be vegetarians?”
The shaman nodded. “They are! But there are vegetarian dishes, you know. Grilled cabbage, eggplant—they’re delicious when roasted.”
Chu Feng: “…Oh! That’s right. You can barbecue vegetables!”
As a meat-eater, he had completely forgotten that BBQ could involve veggies too.
“Isn’t it the wrong season for vegetables?” Chu Feng asked.
The shaman gave him a look. “We built a greenhouse nearby. After placing flame stones inside, even though it’s freezing cold outside, the soil stays warm. Then, with a bit of ability-induced growth acceleration, we don’t get a lot, but enough for some snacks.”
“You’re using flame stones for farming?” Chu Feng asked.
The shaman nodded. “Yes. We buried them in the ground to keep the temperature stable.”
They’ve reached the point of luxury where they’re using flame stones for agriculture?
Lan Hu had wanted those stones but couldn’t get any. Now they were just using them for farming?
In modern times, some greenhouse owners use electricity to enhance plant growth with light.
Chu Feng hadn’t expected people here to go further—they’re using flame stones.
He asked, “You said you built a greenhouse?”
The shaman nodded. “Yes, we followed the planting guide you mentioned. Seems to be working quite well.”
Chu Feng: “…” They even managed to build a greenhouse?
Crescent Tribe really wasn’t the same place anymore. Its development had accelerated impressively.
“How did the tribe get so many flame stones?”
“Previously, some members of the Firefeather Tribe passed through. We traded with them for a batch.”
Chu Feng asked with interest, “The Firefeather Tribe?”
The shaman nodded. “Yes, they have special methods to produce flame stones. Their tribe doesn’t lack them, but they’re reclusive, so it’s not easy to trade with them.”
Chu Feng asked, “So what did you trade for the flame stones?”
The shaman shrugged. “Spicy strips, spicy beef, spicy duck necks…”
Chu Feng frowned. “So… basically spicy stuff?”
Qiu Luo nodded. “Yes, and we also traded for a bunch of chili peppers.”
Chu Feng: “…”
Qiu Luo tilted her head and said, “Our tribe is rich in all kinds of supplies now. We can pretty much trade for whatever we want.”
Chu Feng nodded. “That’s a good thing. We should collect all sorts of strange and rare items.”
In the modern world, with the rise of people with abilities, oddities were becoming more common. Before, some things were too eye-catching to reveal, but if the world kept changing, they might be able to show them without drawing too much attention.
“When we first buried a flame stone in the soil, it got dug up by a strange bear,” the shaman said.
Chu Feng blinked. “Strange bear? A panda?”
The shaman nodded. “Yes.”
Chu Feng: “…” Is a panda really that strange-looking to be called a weird bear?
“And then?”
The shaman took a deep breath. “Then Payne talked to it, gave it a flame stone, and it stopped digging up the soil.”
Chu Feng: “It can be reasoned with?”
The shaman thought for a moment. “Payne seems to share a common language with it. Others don’t.”
Chu Feng: “…” So bears can communicate with each other?
The panda had fire-based abilities—if they could really communicate, maybe it could be useful in the future.
Chu Feng and Illya then left the shaman’s room and headed for the castle terrace.
On top of the castle, a fox, a rabbit, and a wolf were all rolling around together, with a few elves beside them.
Chu Feng blinked and thought to himself, This atmosphere isn’t bad at all!
The castle had been built, but he hadn’t had the time to live in it himself—it ended up benefiting this bunch of furballs instead.
Guobao, the panda, was being instructed to breathe fire repeatedly. Chu Feng couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. “Guobao is being raised pretty well!”
Illya nodded and said, “Yes, I was initially worried it wouldn’t adapt to the environment here, but it seems like there’s no need to worry now.”
Chu Feng looked at Guobao and asked, “Do you think its abilities have improved?”
Illya nodded again. “It should have.”
Previously, Guobao could only spit out a flame the size of a fingertip, but now it could produce one as large as a fist.
Chu Feng remembered the shaman mentioning that Guobao had secretly gone into the fields to dig up Flame Stones. He guessed those stones had some effect on enhancing Guobao’s abilities.
Guobao grabbed a piece of roasted meat and stuffed it into its mouth—it seemed to really enjoy it.
“I thought I’d have to prepare bamboo for it.”
He’d heard that pandas are hard to raise. Some countries couldn’t afford the cost and ended up returning them. And during this season, finding tender bamboo was no easy task.
Being able to eat meat was a good thing.
Chu Feng crossed his arms and said, “Pandas are omnivores.” It was said that when pandas ate too much bamboo, they’d occasionally sneak down the mountain to steal chickens. This one had awakened powers and mutated—maybe that made it prefer meat even more.
When Chu Feng approached, all the furballs transformed into human form and bowed to him.
What surprised him was that Guobao, seemingly influenced by the others, also bowed politely.
Jocelyn, who had been squatting and watching the barbecue, stood up when he saw Chu Feng and Illya. “Is that the boss?”
Chu Feng nodded. “Yeah, that’s me.”
Boss seemed to have become his new nickname—made him sound more impressive.
Looking at Jocelyn and Angelina, Chu Feng thought privately: Elves really do live up to their reputation for beauty.
Jocelyn pointed to the eggplants on the grill. “Is this food from across the sea? It tastes great!”
Chu Feng smiled. “Yes, it’s from over there. Do you like it?”
“I really like it,” Jocelyn said seriously.
Chu Feng thought: Eggplants, huh? Pretty down-to-earth taste! Back home, a lot of kids didn’t even like eating eggplant.
“I want to stay here. I heard I need your approval?” Jocelyn tilted his head and looked at Chu Feng curiously.
Chu Feng nodded. “You want to stay? I heard elven villages are beautiful.”
Jocelyn nodded. “They are, but this place is more fun.”
Chu Feng: “…” Fair point. Being an immortal can’t compete with playing video games for fun…
“I can help with farming. My acceleration ability is really strong,” Jocelyn added.
Illya nodded toward Chu Feng. He sensed a very pure energy from Jocelyn. With someone like this around, he could definitely be of great use. Lately, the shaman had been overwhelmed, so having someone to share the burden was ideal.
After chatting with Jocelyn for a while, Chu Feng left.
After finishing the barbecue, Jocelyn returned to his room, lay on the bed, and started playing games.
Angelina looked at him and asked, “Your Highness, are you planning to stay here permanently?”
Jocelyn crunched on potato chips and replied, “Yeah! Isn’t this place fun? There’s food, clothes, and entertainment…”
Unfortunately, he didn’t earn enough labor credits to eat and play as much as he wanted. If only his ability was stronger.
For the first time, Jocelyn regretted not training his powers more seriously while in the elven village.
“Everyone here listens to that human and the half-elf shaman. Doesn’t that bother you, Your Highness?”
Jocelyn lazily replied, “Doesn’t matter.”
Back in the elven village, he looked like a revered guardian son of the sacred tree, but in reality, he had many restrictions. The elders in the village loved to lecture him—life here was far freer.
With games and snacks, following the half-elf’s lead didn’t seem like such a hard compromise. Besides, he didn’t really have a choice anymore.
He didn’t leave the elven village out of mischief—he left because he couldn’t stay there any longer.
His mother, the Elven Queen, had died six months ago. Her successor was his aunt.
After she took the throne, he was punished with confinement for failing to properly guard the Tree of Life. Realizing things were going south, he ran.
Compared to becoming a noble’s toy, a life of farming here was clearly better.
Even human nobles were just teaching here. In comparison, his “salary” was much higher. Thinking that way, there wasn’t really anything to feel upset about.
“Your Highness, the Tree of Life?”
Jocelyn frowned. The Tree of Life was vital to the elves. In recent years, the tree had shown signs of withering. If it kept deteriorating, the consequences would be dire for the elven race. Because of the tree’s poor condition, many elves were tense—and he became the scapegoat.
Leaving the elven village probably made him look like a fugitive avoiding punishment. Going back now would be like walking into a trap.
The elven village sounded like a utopia, but the competition inside was fierce.
Several ability-users in the tribe constantly schemed and competed for the Life Essence, and Jocelyn had grown tired of it.
“Everyone in the tribe says the outside half-elves live in poverty, but it’s not like that at all, is it? Look how happy they are! So much good food, so much fun stuff. That barbecue looked amazing—I really want to try it!”
Angelina frowned. “Your Highness, how could you even think of eating meat?”
Jocelyn shrugged. “Just thinking out loud.”
He looked at the air conditioner in the room and marveled, “Look at this thing—it can even blow hot air! Incredible.”
Angelina nodded and said, “That’s true.”
The people of their tribe had always lived deep in the forest, so they had definitely never seen so many interesting things.
Originally, there were only a few rooms with air conditioning, but recently Chu Feng had brought in more units. Now, dozens of rooms in the castle area were equipped with air conditioning. Because of her special powers, Jocelyn was also assigned one of the rooms.
Jocelyn had been living in that room for several days now, and it still felt like a wonder to her.
