Chapter 127: The Fog Around His Identity
Chu Feng brought Illya to both the Chu and Lin families and collected hair samples from about a dozen people. Illya’s invisibility ability came in handy—it was easy to take the hairs without anyone noticing.
Illya handed over the hair to Chu Feng and said, “Here it is.”
Chu Feng nodded. “This should be enough.”
Illya said with admiration, “Your DNA testing tech here is amazing! Where I’m from, nobles who get cheated on can’t even tell if the child is theirs. They just have to guess.”
Chu Feng: …
Chu Feng brought the hair samples to the hospital’s testing lab for a paternity test. He gave the doctor handling the test a 10,000 yuan red envelope and got the results that same day.
Looking at the paternity test results, Chu Feng sighed helplessly. “Manning wasn’t wrong.”
Even across worlds, the abilities of a power-user still worked. It was true—he wasn’t the biological son of his supposed parents.
In fact, ever since Manning had told him that his real parents were still alive and that he had an older sister and a younger brother, Chu Feng had already begun to suspect. But now, seeing the DNA results for himself still left him shocked.
Chu Feng thought: No wonder Grandpa Chu always disliked me. Could it be he already knew I wasn’t his biological grandson? But then he reconsidered. That doesn’t add up. Grandma isn’t good at keeping secrets. If she had known I wasn’t their biological grandchild, she would’ve said something long ago. Besides, even if I wasn’t their real grandson, Dad was still their real son. Back when Dad was alive, Grandpa still nitpicked everything I did.
Illya puffed up his cheeks and said, “If Manning is right, your real parents are still alive?”
Chu Feng frowned. “Seems like I’ll have to check the hospital’s records from over a decade ago… but who knows if they even still exist. It might be like searching for a needle in a haystack.”
“You okay?” Sensing Chu Feng’s gloom, Illya asked with concern.
Chu Feng shook his head. “I’m fine.”
“If it’s meant to be, we’ll meet. If not, then I guess that’s just how fate works.”
This way of life wasn’t so bad. No one tried to control him or interfere with what he did.
Chu Feng invited Chu Linsheng out for a meal and casually asked about the time of his birth.
“You were white and chubby when you were born—like a freshly steamed bun. Everyone wanted to pinch your cheeks. It was strange though. Your dad had darker skin, so you must’ve taken after your mom,” Chu Linsheng said.
Chu Feng smiled. “Really?”
Chu Linsheng looked puzzled. “Why the sudden interest in your birth?”
Chu Feng smiled again. “Just suddenly got curious.”
Chu Linsheng laughed. “I see!”
Chu Feng glanced at Illya, who gave him a slight nod.
Illya felt that Chu Linsheng’s emotions had remained steady during the conversation, suggesting he didn’t know anything unusual about Chu Feng’s identity.
Chu Feng thought: If my adoptive parents weren’t hiding anything, then maybe it really was a mix-up back then—and even they didn’t know I wasn’t their biological child.
Chu Feng recalled his childhood. His adoptive parents had always treated him well and acted completely normal. They were already gone now, and he had no way of knowing what really happened.
After a long day, Chu Feng slumped onto the sofa and sighed.
He had looked into the hospital where he was supposedly born, but it had been relocated, and all records from that time were gone.
Too much time had passed. The nurses and doctors from back then had all disappeared.
Chu Feng shook his head. “It’s going to be tough to track down.”
Illya looked at him and said, “Sorry.”
“Why are you apologizing?” Chu Feng replied. His identity issue had nothing to do with Illya.
“If I had Manning’s ability, maybe I could help you find your real parents…” Illya muttered.
Chu Feng smiled. “You’ve already helped me a lot.”
Besides, if Manning was right, then not only did his parents already have a daughter and a son, someone else had probably taken his place and become their adopted son. These people might not welcome his return.
Manning’s ability had limits—it only worked when two people had close blood relations. In such a big world, even if Manning were here, it might not help.
Illya shook his head. “Not necessarily. I think my ability has improved recently. I’ve started to discover a new way to use it.”
Chu Feng was intrigued. “What kind of new use?”
Chu Feng had recently been exploring new ways to use his abilities. Although he hadn’t figured out anything new yet, he was becoming more and more proficient in spatial teleportation within the same plane.
“I can infuse my spiritual energy into the gray mist to envelop another ability user. Maybe this could temporarily enhance their power,” Illya proposed.
Chu Feng’s interest was immediately piqued. “Would it work?”
Illya shook his head. “It’s just a theory—I haven’t had the chance to test it.”
“Well, let’s try it and find out. Channel your ability into me.”
Illya wrapped Chu Feng in his gray mist. Chu Feng swung at a cup on the table, and under the power of his space slash, the cup split in half. The table followed, cleaving apart with a loud crash, shattering the tiles on the floor.
Illya and Chu Feng looked at each other in shock.
Chu Feng blinked. It actually worked? He had only meant to try it casually, but it really worked. He had tried slicing a teacup before, but nothing happened—he thought the space blade was just a silly fantasy. Turns out it actually works! Was it Illya’s enhancement that made the difference, or had he grown stronger?
Chu Feng glanced at Illya and murmured, “Damn, I’m amazing.”
That table was solid mahogany, extremely sturdy, yet it had been split cleanly with a single strike. If his space blade had struck a normal person, it would’ve cleaved them in two instantly.
Illya: “…”
Looking at Illya, Chu Feng couldn’t help but say, “Your ability is really useful.”
Most ability users only had one power, but a single ability could evolve through exploration and experimentation. Illya’s gray mist seemed to have immense potential.
Illya shook his head. “It’s not that my ability is useful—your ability is what’s amazing.”
“Well, that too.” Chu Feng rolled his eyes slightly. It felt like they were just hyping each other up like business partners. And since no one else was around, it felt kind of awkward.
Chu Feng raised his hand again and swung at another cup nearby—this time without Illya’s support. The teacup shattered on contact. Chu Feng smirked in satisfaction. His ability had definitely improved. He’d tried cutting teacups before and failed completely. However, without Illya’s help, his power was still quite limited.
Looking at the electricity sparking around his arm, Chu Feng said, “The portal’s about to activate. Go pack our things.”
Illya nodded. “Okay.”
“This time, we’ll bring a rabbit,” Chu Feng added.
Illya looked a little conflicted. “Didn’t the last one die?”
Chu Feng nodded. “Yeah, it did. But I’ve thought of a solution.”
Illya asked curiously, “What is it?”
Chu Feng smiled. “During the teleportation, you can wrap the rabbit in your gray mist. That should protect it.”
Illya thought it over and nodded. “Worth a try.”
If the plan worked, then people from their world could come through as well—without needing to sleep with Chu Feng.
The environment in Crescent Village had improved recently, and many people no longer felt the need to sleep with Chu Feng. Still, some were clearly unwilling to give up on the idea.
With so many villagers eyeing Chu Feng that way, Illya actually felt quite a bit of pressure. If only there were other ways to survive, he thought.
So he went ahead, found a rabbit, and teleported it through the dimensional rift. Once at the castle, he eagerly checked on the rabbit’s condition.
Thanks to the gray mist’s protection, the rabbit had survived—but it looked listless.
Illya looked into the cage. “It’s alive!”
Chu Feng looked at the trembling rabbit and replied, “Yeah, it’s still breathing, but it looks like it’s on its last legs.”
Illya picked it up. “I’ll take it to the shaman.”
The shaman had recently been refining a lot of elixirs, and some villagers were tasked with capturing rabbits for experimentation. Chu Feng nodded. “Alright.”
Once winter arrived in the castle district, Shaman Qiu Luo had moved into the medical wing.
Some of his supplies had been sealed away in storage, while others were brought to the castle. When he learned Illya had brought back a living rabbit from beyond the sea, he was very surprised and took great care of it.
Delice, standing inside the medical wing, looked around enviously. “Shaman, it’s so warm in here!”
Shaman Qiu Luo chuckled. “Yes, air conditioning really is a wonderful thing.”
Illya had gradually brought over six air conditioners. Compared to the large population in the castle, few people got to enjoy them. Shaman Qiu Luo, being highly respected, was given priority access.
She brewed some ginger tea for Delice and gave her some cold medicine. Delice had recently caught a cold, her nose red from the chill. Many people had come down with colds as the weather turned. Before, the flu was a serious problem here—people could die from it. But Chu Feng’s cold medicine was highly effective. Combined with Shaman Qiu Luo’s herbal remedies, most people recovered in two or three days.
“shaman, it’s so warm here. I don’t want to leave,” Delice said.
Shaman Qiu Luo shook her head. “You should go. There’ll be more patients coming soon.”
Sniffling, Delice looked a little wronged.
Her eyes shifted to the rabbit in the corner.
“shaman, is that the same rabbit I saw yesterday?”
Shaman Qiu Luo nodded. “Yes, it is.”
Delice frowned. “shaman, you seem to be treating that rabbit extra well.”
The shaman had indeed captured many rabbits recently to test various medicines. But this one? It was being fed the best food and kept in top condition.
Shaman Qiu Luo smiled. “This rabbit is… special.”
Only Chu Feng, Illya, and Qiu Luo knew about the rabbit being brought alive from the other world. They’d kept it secret to avoid causing a stir.
Delice looked confused. “What’s so special about it?”
Shaman Qiu Luo just smiled. “That’s not something you need to know.”
Delice puffed out her cheeks, annoyed at how mysterious the shaman was being.
