Chapter 126: Manning’s Discovery
Lan Hu sat in his office, legs crossed smugly. “Didn’t expect to make 300 work tickets just by leaving the gates.”
With that many tickets, he wouldn’t need to borrow from Shi Qi for a while. Shi Qi was generous, but always borrowing wasn’t a good look. Even Lan Hu—thick-skinned as he was—felt bad constantly being called a freeloader.
Lately, Shi Qi had been obsessed with shopping at the snack shop, buying clothes, makeup, bras… she seemed tight on money too.
Lan Hu thought to himself: Women will be women. Always blowing money on nonsense.
Riye looked enviously at the tickets in Lan Hu’s hand. After a few days in Crescent Village, he’d come to appreciate the value of work tickets. Even though he looked down on Lan Hu for freeloading, he couldn’t help being jealous that Lan Hu had someone to freeload off of.
“What did you do to get the boss to give you so much?”
Lan Hu replied casually, “Nothing much—just accompanied the boss on a shopping trip.”
Then he suddenly remembered something. “Oh, right—we spent your money.”
Riye’s face changed instinctively. Even though he’d long accepted that the money wasn’t his anymore, it still hurt to hear it was all spent.
Lan Hu leaned back in his chair. “Our boss really is filthy rich—spends like there’s no tomorrow.”
Riye rolled his eyes, thinking: Of course Chu Feng doesn’t mind spending—it’s not even his money. My poor silver notes…
Lan Hu looked at the tickets in his hand and thought: Making money was so easy this time. Who knows when I’ll get another chance like this? He shook his head and thought: Whatever. Live for today—eat, drink, and be merry.
With so much cash, his next move was to buy some cola. He didn’t know why he hadn’t noticed it before, but the snack shop sold cola, and it was amazing—sweet, fizzy, and oh-so-delicious. Way better than beer. Those dwarf people must be idiots—not realizing cola was far superior and cheaper.
Lichiya looked at Lan Hu curiously and asked, “Did you guys teleport to Tianhai City?”
Lan Hu nodded and said, “Yes.”
Lichiya furrowed her brows and asked, “Does your Merdes family have a trading firm in Tianhai City?”
Lan Hu nodded and said, “Yes, we do.”
The Merdes family’s trading firms are spread all over the world. Tianhai City is a major city, so naturally, there’s a branch of our family business there.
“Did you leave any kind of distress signal?” she asked.
Lan Hu shook his head and replied, “No.”
Lichiya thought: What an idiot, Lan Hu. Such a good opportunity, and you didn’t take it. What, do you plan to live here as a slave forever?
Riye glared at Lan Hu and said, “That was a perfect chance, and you just let it go to waste.”
Lan Hu glanced at Riye and asked, “Do you want to escape?”
Riye pressed his lips together and thought to himself: Of course he wants to escape. But that’s not something you can just say out loud — who knows if someone nearby is listening?
Lan Hu hadn’t completely ruled out the idea of sending a message to his family either. But considering Illya’s abilities, he had ultimately decided against it.
Lan Hu looked at Riye and said, “I ran into Riqi in Tianhai City.”
Riye paused in surprise. “And what did you say to him?”
Lan Hu shook his head and replied, “I didn’t say much, but he said a lot. He told me that you and Lichiya are supposed to get married at the start of next year, and asked if I wanted to attend the wedding in the royal capital.” Lan Hu snorted. “But judging by the current situation, that wedding probably won’t be happening.”
Riye: “…”
According to the original plan, he and Lichiya were supposed to get married at the beginning of the year—if he hadn’t become a prisoner. But now, all of that was ruined.

“Boss.” When Chu Feng returned, Manning respectfully bowed to him.
Chu Feng glanced at Manning and asked, “You’ve been studying with a few of the others recently, haven’t you?”
Manning nodded earnestly and replied, “I want to learn how to read, and study more arithmetic.”
“Learning more is always a good thing. Knowledge helps people improve,” Chu Feng said with his hands behind his back.
Chu Feng thought to himself: Even if I don’t enjoy studying, that doesn’t stop me from encouraging others to do it!
Manning nodded again. Literacy was a privilege of nobles and wealthy families. When he was just a servant in a major household, he had envied how young masters got to study. Now that he had the opportunity himself, he wanted to make the most of it.
Chu Feng asked casually, “How are things between your teachers?”
Manning frowned slightly. “When Teacher Riye first arrived, he only had a romantic storyline with Teacher Lichiya, but lately, there seem to be more—some pointing to Qinglan, some toward Tilly.”
Chu Feng said, “He’s only been gone a few days! And he’s already got that many new love interests? Nobles really are fickle.”
Curious, Chu Feng continued, “Did Riye do anything toward Tilly or Qinglan?”
Manning shook his head. “No. He’s just secretly infatuated.”
So he’s just a guy with the desire but not the guts, Chu Feng thought. Well, that makes sense. After all, he’s still a prisoner right now.
Manning tilted his head and said, “Riye is kind of poor too. Even if he wanted to confess, it would probably be hard.”
Chu Feng: “…Ouch. Straight to the point. If you want to be in love, you need money first! Riye is just a broke guy right now.”
“What about Lan Hu and Lichiya? Any signs of romance between them?” he asked.
Manning shook his head. “It’s basically dead between them now.”
Chu Feng: “…Dead? But didn’t Lan Hu run away from home for Lichiya? And now he’s not into her anymore?”
From what Lan Hu had said to Riqi earlier, it didn’t seem like he had been lying.
“A few days ago, Lichiya borrowed Lan Hu’s game console and chips,” Manning explained. “She finished the chips and broke the console. That seems to have been the final straw between them.”
So that’s all it took to end things? Chu Feng had thought Lan Hu was seriously in love with Lichiya, but it turns out… snacks and games were the deciding factor?
Then again, Chu Feng thought, that’s fair. For a lot of hardcore gamers, a girlfriend is optional—but a game console is absolutely essential. If you’ve got a console, who needs a girlfriend?
Manning looked at Chu Feng and said, “Lately, it seems like someone’s been looking for those two missing humans. Probably relatives of the elf hunters.”
“But they seem to be on guard. No one’s been caught yet. Are there many of them?” Illya asked.
Manning shook his head. “Not many. Just three or four.”
Illya nodded, thinking: Even if they look like a disorganized bunch, they could still cause trouble if left unchecked. We need to take care of this quickly.
Chu Feng asked with curiosity, “How do you know about this?”
Manning said proudly, “I think my ability has improved recently. I can now see the kinship threads between people. When two people with a blood connection get close, I can see the thread connecting them and their relative distance. If they’re too far apart, I can’t sense it.”
Chu Feng asked with a bit of doubt, “Your ability improved? How?”
Manning looked a little shy. “I guess it’s from practice… and maybe also because of the ritual master’s medicine.”
In noble families, things are usually messy. Manning had been afraid to use his powers recklessly before, worried he’d find out things he wasn’t supposed to know. But here, it was different. He could use his ability freely. Recently, he had been exploring how to use it better, and it had grown significantly.
Chu Feng smiled and asked offhandedly, “If you can see that, can you see my kinship threads?”
Manning looked at Chu Feng and said, “Master, your parents are both alive, and you have a younger brother. But they’re too far away—I can’t see them right now.”
Illya looked at Manning in shock. “A biological older sister? A real younger brother?”
Manning nodded. “Yes. Same father, same mother.”
Manning looked between Chu Feng and Illya. “What? Did I say something wrong?”
Illya shook his head. “No, it’s nothing.”
Manning had no idea the shock his words had caused the two of them. He just muttered to himself, “That’s odd. Usually, if someone has relatives, even if they’re far away, I can see the thread direction. But for you, Master, I can’t see any direction at all.”
Illya: “…That’s because you’re not even from the same world. Of course there’s no visible thread.”
Chu Feng looked at Manning and said, “Alright, you can go now.”
Manning noticed their expressions were a bit off, and felt like something had happened—but didn’t ask further. “I’ll take my leave now.”
Illya glanced at Chu Feng, somewhat puzzled, and asked, “Were you swapped at birth?”
Chu Feng chuckled and replied, “Why would you think that?”
Illya shrugged and said, “That’s how it always goes on TV! Maybe your real parents are actually big-shot tycoons.”
Chu Feng looked at Illya and thought to himself: Looks like Illya’s been binge-watching dramas lately. He seems to know all the tropes—poor boy turns out to be a rich heir. It’s the dream of countless losers and an overused plotline in dramas. Maybe Manning really did make a mistake.
Illya nodded and said, “Yeah, you’re not from our world, after all. There’s definitely a chance Manning’s ability messed up. Isn’t there something called a paternity test here?”
Chu Feng nodded. “You’re right.”
If what Manning said was true, and his biological parents were still alive, then how did the mix-up happen in the first place? Did the nurse switch the name tags? Or maybe his adoptive parents originally had a daughter and wanted a son, so they swapped babies. Or maybe it was someone’s prank? Or even a deliberate act of revenge?
Illya looked at Chu Feng and asked, “If what Manning said is true, do you want to find your biological parents?”
Chu Feng frowned slightly. “It wouldn’t hurt to try.”
When he used to live in poverty, Chu Feng would sometimes fantasize about being a rich family’s child who was mistakenly taken home by the wrong parents. He imagined that his wealthy real parents might one day appear out of nowhere. But he had only ever thought of it as wishful thinking. He never expected that there was actually a possibility his parents weren’t his real parents.
Chu Feng glanced at Illya and said, “Let’s go over there.”
Illya nodded. “Okay.”
In the current world, ability users were emerging constantly, and the situation was ever-changing. Chu Feng preferred to stay here a while longer.
