Chapter 106: Transmigrated as a Fraudulent Male Streamer (30)
Cen Yu’s words made Fan Jie drop his head, not daring to look at him again.
Cen Yu let out a cold snort, tearing through Fan Jie’s excuses right on the spot—the guy hadn’t felt a pang of conscience and wanted to return to Meiman Middle School to resolve this matter at all.
Rather, after the fact, he had suddenly remembered that among the curses he uttered back then, he had included himself as a target too.
Otherwise, Cen Yu believed the man would have stayed in his own city with a clear conscience, never entertaining the thought of coming back.
“…What do we do now?” Jiang Tuan kicked Fan Jie before turning to Cen Yu.
He Yongning hadn’t said a word. From the moment Pei Hengyun exposed Yu Sheng’s identity until now, he had still been deep in thought. “Why does Fan Jie remember… while we don’t?”
This was a question Cen Yu was curious about as well.
There was no process of making a wish inside the minds of the rest of their group.
“Could it be because his wish wasn’t fulfilled?” Jiang Tuan speculated.
After all, Fan Jie had been interrupted by Old Cen mid-sentence back then… At that thought, he looked at Cen Yu. “Do you… still remember Old Cen?”
Of course not, Cen Yu thought to himself.
His mind was a complete blank with nothing in it.
He guessed that even if this plot point existed, it would only load after he unlocked the secret… Right now, he was like someone playing a first-person horror puzzle game: without gathering enough information, his own identity remained a total mystery.
Naturally, he wouldn’t say this to Jiang Tuan, so he simply shook his head.
Seeing this, a trace of disappointment flashed across Jiang Tuan’s face… He turned his head to look back at the classroom doorway. “We probably can’t leave, can we?”
Cen Yu sat back down on the desk behind him. Yu Sheng hadn’t come over yet—was it because he felt it was unnecessary, or did he think watching them analyze the situation here was entertaining?
He looked at Pei Hengyun beside him. “How much do you remember?”
As someone who died in his sophomore year of high school and wasn’t human either, Pei Hengyun shouldn’t be as easily duped as the rest of them, logically speaking.
Pei Hengyun shook his head. “…None of you could see me back then.”
“After graduation, I followed you when you left our hometown. It was during that time I realized I was gradually gaining a solid physical form and could interact with everyone.” He looked at Cen Yu. “I tried to greet you, but you didn’t recognize me at all and even asked me who I was.”
Accompanying Pei Hengyun’s narrative, a scene surfaced in Cen Yu’s mind.
It was during his freshman year of college; he was working part-time at a restaurant outside campus when a strange man suddenly grabbed his hand.
Calling him Little Yu.
Instinctively wanting to shake the man off, he noticed the profoundly crestfallen look on the guy’s face. After a moment of silence, he asked what the man wanted.
And that man had been Pei Hengyun.
It seemed that only when he came into contact with the corresponding plot points would the memories in his head actually surface, Cen Yu pondered.
Looking at it this way, after they all left this place, he went to his current city for college, and then ran into Pei Hengyun, who had developed the ability to maintain a human appearance and make himself visible to everyone.
However…
Cen Yu scrutinized Pei Hengyun. “Why did you pretend to be an art teacher?”
“I-I didn’t pretend,” Pei Hengyun explained frantically, terrified that Cen Yu wouldn’t believe him. “I just…”
He said with a touch of embarrassment, “I didn’t want you to find out that I didn’t actually have a job.”
“Besides, becoming an art teacher has always been my dream.”
With a moment of thought, Cen Yu understood: Yu Sheng had been dead locally for years, and given that Meiman Middle School had few people, simple social ties, and a small village population, altering everyone’s memories here was relatively easy.
The place where he and Pei Hengyun lived, on the other hand, was a major city.
They needed to interact with far too many people, and since Pei Hengyun was merely a minor ghost who had died in his sophomore year of high school, his powers weren’t nearly as formidable…
He Yongning looked at the defending Pei Hengyun, then glanced at Fan Jie, who seemed to be contemplating a quiet escape. He blocked Fan Jie’s path directly with his leg. “If you want to die, go ahead and run.”
“Do you really think Yu Sheng will let you go?”
He squinted at Fan Jie. “You were staying with him. Guess who would have died tonight if not for this unexpected turn of events?”
He could sense that Yu Sheng had called them all back precisely to wipe them out in one fell swoop.
And Fan Jie, being the instigator, would definitely be the very first target.
“B-But…” Fan Jie was scared out of his wits by He Yongning’s words. “Why would he kill me?”
“My wish wasn’t even fulfilled…”
Cen Yu simply felt Fan Jie’s question was laughably stupid.
Who ever stipulated that fulfilling a wish had to match the exact way he envisioned it?
“You die,” he pointed at Fan Jie. “And then your body gets carried away. Doesn’t that count as leaving this place to go home?”
“Plus, your death satisfies the wish for everyone to drop dead too.”
Cen Yu was just about to say something more when he caught the familiar sound of footsteps.
Tap, tap, tap.
The sound was unhurried and measured, without any deliberate attempt to tread lightly—as if he didn’t care in the slightest whether this group discovered him or not.
“He’s here,” Cen Yu said, turning his gaze toward the corridor.
At his words, the others immediately whipped their heads toward the hallway… Cen Yu threw a glance outside, realizing that if they ran out now, they would only get caught red-handed by Yu Sheng on the spot. He immediately turned to look at the window behind them.
This was the second floor; as long as they were reasonably agile, jumping down wouldn’t kill anyone.
Thinking this, he immediately walked toward the window. “Over here.”
Realizing Cen Yu’s intention right away, He Yongning and Jiang Tuan noticed that Fan Jie looked far too terrified to move closer.
“You two go first,” Cen Yu said to He Yongning and Jiang Tuan.
Jiang Tuan was about to say something when He Yongning grabbed him in a firm grip. “Move, fast.”
With that, the two swiftly vaulted over the open window, stepped onto the ledge protruding beneath the second-floor opening, and landed lightly on the ground below.
Cen Yu gave Fan Jie a harsh yank. Had it not been for the System task requiring him to rewrite everyone’s fate, he wouldn’t give a single damn whether this idiot lived or died. He looked at Pei Hengyun. “Give me a hand.”
Pei Hengyun glanced out toward the hallway, looking rather tense as well.
Still, he grabbed hold of Fan Jie, but knowing this man was a ghost, Fan Jie instinctively tried to shake his arm off—
“You complete idiot!” Cen Yu truly couldn’t take it anymore, grabbing Fan Jie straight by the collar. “If you really want to die that badly, I won’t stop you.”
Saying this, he turned to Pei Hengyun. “Go!”
Yu Sheng’s footsteps drew steadily closer—they could even hear the sound of him softly humming a song—
Cen Yu opened the window, stepping onto its frame as he prepared to leap down, when his arm was suddenly grabbed by Pei Hengyun.
Pei Hengyun then carried him as they floated gently down to the ground.
Beside them came a heavy thud as Fan Jie crashed flat onto the dirt.
Cen Yu yanked Pei Hengyun along as they sprinted away. When he looked back, he caught sight of Yu Sheng poking his head out right at the edge of the window frame.
Watching the group flee, Yu Sheng wasn’t in a hurry at all; a smile remained plastered across his face. Yet in the pitch-black, cavernous classroom, it only evoked a deeper sense of horror.
Looking at Yu Sheng, Cen Yu couldn’t hold back and flipped him a middle finger.
Yu Sheng wasn’t angry in the slightest; in fact, Cen Yu’s gesture made him burst into a laugh… Leaning against the window frame, he watched the fleeing group—
“Run faster,” he called out.
