Chapter 103: Lin City Prison
Su Ruizhe took out an imported off-road vehicle from his spatial storage—one they had often used before. He pushed the rear seats flat, turning them into something like a bed. However, the space inside the car was still limited; it was impossible for seven girls to lie down. At best, they could only sit leaning against the sides of the vehicle. After spreading clean blankets over the seats, Su Ruizhe had the others help carry those pitiful girls into the car.
After Zhang Shuoliang used his earth-type ability to bury the corpses, he got into the off-road vehicle as well. Song Chengshu followed with the medical kit together with Wu Jing.
The two vehicles, one in front and one behind, left the village. The continuously falling snow quickly piled up, burying all traces of their arrival.
Following the directions on the map, they headed toward Lin City Prison. Along the way, they inevitably encountered some zombies, but they didn’t bother dealing with them—those that blocked the road were simply run over, and those that chased after them were left to chase as they pleased.
Soon, they saw Lin City Prison in the distance. Meanwhile, twenty to thirty zombies were trailing behind their vehicles. From afar, it looked as if they were fleeing nonstop while being pursued by zombies.
The outer perimeter of Lin City Prison was surrounded by towering walls. Guards stood watch on the tall lookout towers and immediately spotted the snow patrol vehicle and the off-road vehicle.
One person hurried down from the lookout tower to report to their superiors, while another stayed behind to keep watch on the situation outside.
Zhan Yun and the others quickly arrived at the entrance of Lin City Prison and discovered that the main gate had been firmly sealed shut by earth-type abilities. It seemed that entering or leaving required the help of an earth-type ability user.
However, such a minor obstacle posed no problem for Zhan Yun’s group. Just as he was about to have Zhang Shuoliang get out of the car, the earth wall blocking the way in front of them collapsed, opening a passage wide enough for two vehicles to enter.
“Quick, come in!” Two young men appeared behind the collapsed earth wall, waving urgently at them.
Zhan Yun didn’t hesitate. He stepped on the accelerator, and both vehicles drove straight into Lin City Prison. The two young men immediately acted together, raising earth walls to reseal the gate, blocking the staggering zombies that had chased after them.
Outside, the zombies roared incessantly, pounding and ramming against the wall.
At this moment, more and more people emerged, gathering in the open area as if to watch the commotion. In reality, they were slowly surrounding the two vehicles.
“It’s all right now. You can come out,” a woman in a dark red qipao walked gracefully to the snow patrol vehicle and knocked on the window. Smiling sweetly, she said in a crisp voice, “The gate has been sealed. Once we go inside, they won’t be able to smell you and will leave.”
The windows of the snow patrol vehicle were tinted, so from outside, only vague silhouettes of the people inside could be seen, not their features clearly.
Zhan Yun coldly looked at the woman—this so-called “beauty freezing in the cold”—curled his lips in disdain, and used the intercom to tell the people in Zhang Shuoliang’s vehicle not to get out. Then he opened the door himself and stepped down.
With Zhan Yun taking the lead, the others in the snow patrol vehicle also got out one after another.
At first, when the woman saw Zhan Yun’s looks and their attire, the smile on her face widened noticeably. But the moment she saw Su Ruizhe, her smile instantly stiffened.
Su Ruizhe was equally startled. He hadn’t expected to see her here…
The woman wearing a qipao in the dead of winter, showing off her snow-white long legs, was none other than Su Ruizhe’s arrogant sister-in-law, Lin Xi.
“So it’s Xiao Zhe,” Lin Xi quickly composed herself, putting on a pleasantly surprised expression. She took a few steps forward and hugged Su Ruizhe tightly.
Zhan Yun: …
Su Ruizhe: …
Fortunately, Lin Xi herself probably felt awkward as well. She only hugged him briefly before letting go.
“Hahaha, so it’s Brother Zhan and your group,” another man spoke up at this time, having recognized Zhan Yun. It was none other than Fifth Master, whom they had met before.
Zhan Yun gave him a slight nod as a greeting.
“Haha, what a coincidence! Come, come, let’s go inside. It’s freezing out here,” Fifth Master said enthusiastically.
Zhan Yun neither agreed nor disagreed, simply nodding as he led the others to follow Fifth Master toward the buildings behind them.
“Brother Zhan, aren’t the people in the other vehicle getting out?” Fifth Master asked.
“There are patients in the car. It’s not very convenient.”
“I see.” Fifth Master didn’t ask further and led them inside.
Lin City Prison was divided into several sections. The front half consisted of administrative offices and guard facilities, while the back half naturally housed the cell blocks and labor areas. The administrative buildings were generally where correctional officers lived, worked, and held meetings. The guard facilities included guardrooms and barracks for the guard troops, meant to prevent prisoner escapes or riots.
When the apocalypse first broke out, the Eight Vajras had taken advantage of the chaos to attack the guard barracks, acquiring firearms, ammunition, and other supplies.
Now, the Eight Vajras had returned to Lin City Prison with their people and occupied the administrative buildings, becoming the top leadership of the Lin City Prison base.
Fifth Master led Zhan Yun and the others into the administrative building and into a conference room. Inside, the tables and chairs had all been chopped into firewood and piled in a corner. A fire burned in the center of the room, with many people gathered around it to keep warm. Among them, a middle-aged man with a long face, wearing a dark blue, tattered cotton coat, stood up.
“Old Fifth, these people are…?”
“Boss, they’re from the Southern Base. They came to our base once before.”
It turned out that this middle-aged man was the leader of the Eight Vajras—the base chief of the Lin City Base, Cao Qishen.
“Oh?” Cao Qishen’s gaze subtly swept over Zhan Yun’s group from head to toe. Only then did he reveal a faint smile. “Come, come, have a seat. It’s so cold outside—you must be frozen. Come warm yourselves by the fire.”
As the saying goes, one doesn’t strike a smiling face. Although Zhan Yun had no good impression of Cao Qishen, he still found a place to sit.
At this moment, Lin Xi suddenly walked over to Cao Qishen’s side, pointed at Su Ruizhe, and said with a smile, “Boss Cao, what a coincidence—my younger brother is here too!”
“Oh?” As Lin Xi drew close, Cao Qishen’s hand very naturally settled on her waist, even showing signs of sliding downward. After hearing her words, however, his gaze shifted toward Su Ruizhe.
Su Ruizhe was wearing a white down jacket, which made his skin look even smoother and more jade-like. His small face had delicate features, still carrying a hint of youthful innocence, to the point that Cao Qishen found it hard to look away.
Zhan Yun, ever perceptive, immediately noticed something wrong with Cao Qishen’s gaze. He stood up at once and, without any courtesy, blocked Su Ruizhe behind him.
Cao Qishen immediately narrowed his eyes, about to lose his temper, but Fifth Master stepped in and quietly said a few words to him. He was likely telling him that these people were all extremely powerful ability users and not to be provoked lightly. In any case, Cao Qishen soon forced another smile—though this one was noticeably stiff.
“Captain Zhan, right? Are you out on another mission?”
“Mm,” Zhan Yun replied casually.
The smile on Cao Qishen’s face stiffened a bit more. Then he said, “It’s getting late, and traveling at night isn’t very convenient. Why don’t you stay here for the night?”
“Thank you for the hospitality,” Zhan Yun said. He had planned to take this opportunity to get a better understanding of Lin City Prison anyway, so he readily agreed.
“Old Fifth! Arrange accommodations for them! I’m heading back to my room.” After saying this, Cao Qishen wrapped an arm around Lin Xi’s waist and left.
“Captain Zhan, please follow me,” Fifth Master said with a flattering smile.
Zhan Yun didn’t hesitate and followed him.
“There are quite a lot of us here, and the front buildings are already full. I’m afraid we’ll have to arrange for you to stay in the cell blocks at the back… I wonder if you’d mind?” Fifth Master quickly added, “Although they’re cell blocks, there are duty rooms for prison guards there—they’re much cleaner than the actual cells.”
“Mm, it’s fine. We’ll just make do for one night,” Zhan Yun replied. They weren’t picky; having a place to lie down was already good enough. In the past, when traveling, they usually just slept sitting in their vehicles.
“Good, good!” Fifth Master soon led them to the cell block at the back. Upon entering, they saw two neat rows of cells, all of which were occupied. Men and women, young and old alike, sat quietly on their bunks, with a brazier placed on the floor for warmth.
There were no lights in the cell block—it was very dim. Everyone kept their heads lowered, making their expressions impossible to see. Only by the faint glow of the fire could one make out their general shapes.
Zhan Yun felt that these people were probably the survivors they had once taken out of the Lin City Base during their escape. Their clothes looked extremely thin. They huddled together in small groups, crowding around the braziers for warmth.
“Brother Zhan, you’ll be staying here tonight,” Fifth Master said, leading them to the left and into a prison guard’s duty room. The room was about a dozen square meters in size and contained an adjoining rest area with only a narrow bed.
The surveillance monitors in the room had all gone dead due to the power outage. Fifth Master simply had people remove and smash them, then carry out the desks and chairs. He had several sets of bunk beds brought in, quickly filling the small room.
“This should be enough space now,” Fifth Master said with a smile. “Later, I’ll have someone bring you some food. Please rest well.”
“Mm, thank you,” Zhan Yun replied indifferently.
