Chapter 77
Larnst’s face was so dark it looked ready to drip water. He clearly had never imagined that the war machine he had painstakingly created—the mechanical broodmother—would prove so utterly vulnerable in Feng Wu’s hands.
His voice was low, as if barely restraining a storm. “That’s impossible—”
“Nothing is impossible, Larnst,” Feng Wu said coolly. “Kaylo stone radiation is not without a cure, and Gata metal is not the most perfect metal in the world. Or rather, nothing in this world is absolutely perfect. No matter what it is, there will always be flaws and weaknesses.”
Larnst glared at him viciously. “It’s only one broodmother. Don’t tell me you really think defeating it means you can defeat us.”
He tugged at the corner of his mouth, clearly about to continue rambling, but Feng Wu had no patience left to listen to his nonsense.
Silver Armor, standing beside him, shot forward at high speed. Its right arm swung out hard and smashed the communications system in the control room with perfect accuracy.
Larnst’s projected figure crackled, then vanished along with the dimming screen, as if foretelling his final fate.
Feng Wu turned and left the control room. Lin An’an’s voice came urgently through his earpiece. “Wolf Bro! They installed bombs inside the ship!”
Lin An’an had already heard the exchange between Feng Wu and Larnst through the earpiece, and he also knew that Feng Wu had taken down the broodmother even faster than expected.
But right now, he had no time to celebrate Feng Wu’s victory.
“I guessed as much.” Feng Wu pressed a hand to his earpiece, his expression grim. “Which room are the bombs in?”
“In the room I’m in now,” Lin An’an replied rapidly. “It’s the hall right at the center of the ship. Half the room is packed with bombs, and the other half is filled with Kaylo stones—”
“And just now, the bombs suddenly activated. The countdown has started.”
Feng Wu asked, “How long is the countdown?”
“Fifteen minutes,” Lin An’an said. “Now there are only fourteen minutes and thirty-three seconds left.”
“There’s still time.” Feng Wu leapt into Silver Armor’s cockpit and sped toward Lin An’an’s location.
Lin An’an gave a quiet acknowledgment. “Okay.”
The voices in the earpiece stopped, but Feng Wu could still hear Lin An’an’s breathing—still fast and uneven.
He asked softly, “Are you scared?”
The other side seemed to pause for a second, then laughed and asked back, “Scared of what? You already said there’s still time. What’s there to be scared of?”
That absolute, unquestioning trust made Feng Wu press his lips together unconsciously, unable to stop the slight upward curve of his mouth.
He pushed Silver Armor to maximum speed, but the ship’s internal structure was too complicated. Even so, it still only took him a little over a minute to reach the hall Lin An’an had mentioned.
The hall had clearly undergone special modifications. It was extremely large—more than five times bigger than a normal starship hall.
In the corridor outside the room, Xiong Yingjun and the others were desperately holding back wave after wave of densely packed Zerg. It was difficult, but not a single one had broken through into the hall.
When they saw Silver Armor arrive, Xiong Yingjun’s eyes lit up. “Boss!”
His response was a raised arm from Silver Armor. An energy cannon fired from its palm, blasting a whole patch of Zerg into fragments.
Xiong Yingjun shouted, “Boss, get in there! We’ve got the outside covered!”
Feng Wu did not waste words. He put Silver Armor away and moved through the path the others had cleared for him, entering the room.
Besides Lin An’an, there were two other team members inside, both studying the pile of explosives that was practically stacked into a hill.
When they saw Feng Wu, one of them immediately said, “Commander, these are a new type of mechanical explosives. Nothing like them has ever appeared in the Milky Way. Dismantling them will take time.”
“Mechanical explosives?” Feng Wu narrowed his eyes and ordered, “You two get out first. Leave this place to me.”
The two men withdrew at once, leaving only Feng Wu and Lin An’an inside.
“All the Kaylo stones in the other rooms have already been purified,” Lin An’an said. “These are the last of them on the ship. But the amount here is almost greater than all the Kaylo stones in the other rooms combined.”
“These explosives were originally meant to be kept here until the ship entered Imperial territory. Then the entire ship—and all the Kaylo stones inside it—would be blown up, destroying the Gata metal used to block the Kaylo radiation,” Feng Wu said. “My killing the broodmother must have made Larnst panic, so he activated the bombs ahead of schedule.”
Fifteen minutes was enough time for Larnst and the rest of the X-system people to put enough distance between themselves and the area that would be affected by the Kaylo radiation after the explosion.
Feng Wu quickly got to work inspecting the bomb devices as he asked, “How long will it take to purify all these Kaylo stones?”
Lin An’an downed a bottle of energy-restoring medicine. “Ten minutes—no, eight.”
“Good.” Feng Wu gave the order. “All personnel, prepare to evacuate in eight minutes.”
Lin An’an understood at once.
As long as the Kaylo stone radiation could be purified in time, then even if the bombs really exploded once the countdown ended, the consequences would not be too severe.
He pushed aside every distracting thought, poured two more bottles of energy-restoring medicine down his throat, and focused all his attention on the mountain-like pile of Kaylo stones in front of him.
Feng Wu glanced at the figure not far away. The boy’s face was pale as paper. The only trace of color left on his lips came from the bloody bite mark he himself had made. And yet the ability shining from his palms remained as bright as ever.
Feng Wu only looked once before withdrawing his gaze. His task was the mountain of explosives before him.
Second by second, the numbers on the countdown continued to tick down. The bombs beeped steadily, as though warning everyone not to remain any longer.
Outside the room were the sounds of Xiong Yingjun and the others fighting fiercely. The shrill screeches of the Zerg slipped through the cracks of the door, but they did not disturb the two people in the room in the slightest.
Fourteen minutes, thirteen minutes, twelve minutes…
Nine minutes, eight minutes, seven minutes…
When the countdown dropped into the six-minute range, Lin An’an finally lowered his hands, his face so white it looked like paper.
“Purification complete.” His voice was soft, but it could not suppress the joy and excitement in it.
“Good.” Feng Wu answered. Although they had agreed to retreat at that point, he still did not move.
Lin An’an came over without hesitation and crouched beside the mountain of bombs, only to see that Feng Wu had already removed the outer casing of one of them, exposing the clear mechanical circuitry inside.
He suddenly remembered what the team member had said earlier—these were a new kind of mechanical bomb.
Mechanical bombs meant that over ninety percent of their structure was machinery, in other words, metal.
Lin An’an blinked and did not urge Feng Wu. He simply watched him quietly.
The countdown on the bombs continued to tick down, but in the end, it never reached zero. It stopped forever at five minutes and one second.
Feng Wu let out a light breath. “Bomb disposal successful.”
He had already taken control of every explosive using his ability. Even if Larnst somehow managed to remotely force the countdown to zero, the bombs would no longer obey his command and explode.
Lin An’an said softly, “Let’s go, Wolf Bro. I prepared a gift for them.”
Feng Wu reached out to steady the boy, whose steps were already beginning to weaken. “A gift?”
“That’s right.” Lin An’an tugged at the corner of his mouth, revealing an icy smile. “It’s time to strike back.”
Outside the room, Xiong Yingjun and the others were still desperately holding off the countless Zerg.
“Damn it, how does this ship even have room for this many Zerg?!” Xiong Yingjun cursed.
Behind them, the tightly shut door suddenly opened. “Do not engage any longer. Retreat.”
Lin An’an once again took his seat in Silver Armor. More than ten mechs sped through the corridors of the ship, blasting their way through with energy cannons and forcibly opening a path toward the energy chamber.
Once everyone entered the energy chamber, Xiong Yingjun, who was at the rear, shut the hatch tightly behind them, sealing all the Zerg outside.
The group escaped from the ship through the opening Feng Wu had melted into the hull. All of the mechs returned almost completely unharmed to the warship they had used to come here.
Si Youlin and the others were waiting at the warship entrance. The moment they saw them, he stepped forward and gave each of them a hug. “Beautifully done!”
He had stayed on the communications channel the whole time, which was practically another way of witnessing the entire operation.
“Pull back immediately. Put distance between us and the Kaylo stone ship,” Feng Wu ordered. “Confirm whether there are any other warships within ten kilometers of the Kaylo stone ship.”
Si Youlin instantly snapped back into command mode. “None. The Federation and the star pirates have already withdrawn. Ours is the only warship left in this area.”
He pushed the warship’s speed to its maximum. In less than a minute, it had retreated more than ten kilometers.
Si Youlin nodded to Feng Wu. Feng Wu’s icy gaze remained fixed on the display before him as he pressed his finger against a virtual button on the screen.
Silver-white ability flowed from his fingertips, easily reaching the mechanical explosives more than ten kilometers away—explosives that he had already brought under his control.
A massive explosion erupted in the distance. The huge black-and-silver starship bloomed like a brilliant mushroom cloud in the dark void of space.
The whole ship, along with the countless Zerg inside and the Kaylo stones that had already lost their radiation, was reduced in that instant to a heap of space debris.
“Using their own bombs to destroy their ultimate weapon…” Si Youlin said. “Larnst and the others must be furious enough to die.”
He then added, “The Fourth Squadron says Larnst’s ship is showing signs of retreat.”
“Retreat? They think they can come when they want and leave when they want? Since when did life get that easy?” Lin An’an sneered. Suddenly, he flipped his hand over, revealing in his palm a glowing sphere the size of a ball, wrapped in pale green ability light.
Xiong Yingjun asked curiously, “What’s that?”
“A gift for Larnst and the others,” Lin An’an said. “This is radiation energy extracted from the last pile of Kaylo stones.”
Si Youlin’s expression changed slightly. “You didn’t purify it?”
Lin An’an knew exactly what he was worried about. “Don’t worry. I modified this radiation energy. It can only exist in open air for one second. Load it into the TUM energy cannon and let the cannon send it straight back to Larnst’s ship.”
The destructive force of a TUM energy cannon was self-evident. One second was enough time for that clump of radiation energy to spread through every corner of the X-system ship.
This was energy directly extracted from Kaylo stones. Even a perfected full-body mechanical being like Larnst had no way of completely resisting it.
The few people present understood Lin An’an’s meaning immediately.
Feng Wu reacted the fastest. “Lock onto Larnst’s ship. I’ll inject the radiation energy into the TUM energy cannon.”
Si Youlin nodded and immediately contacted the Fourth Squadron, ordering them to withdraw at once.
Lin An’an followed right behind Feng Wu.
It took less than three minutes to inject the energy. By then, Larnst’s ship had already retreated to the edge of the rubble zone.
Feng Wu pressed his earpiece. “TUM energy cannon ready. Fire immediately.”
Si Youlin’s voice came back almost at once. “TUM energy cannon channel open. Firing in three seconds. Estimated impact on target ship in ten seconds.”
Feng Wu drew Lin An’an slightly back with an arm around his shoulders.
The energy cannon carved a streak of silver-white light through the void and vanished into the far distance in the blink of an eye.
Lin An’an counted down silently in his heart. Ten, nine, eight… three, two, one!
Far away, the horizon lit up with a brilliant silver-white glow, only to go dark again the next instant.
The entire universe fell silent, as though every sound had been swallowed up in that flash.
A moment later, Feng Wu said, “Report.”
Si Youlin answered almost immediately, “Report! The Fourth Squadron confirms that the ship Larnst was on has been destroyed by the TUM energy cannon. The wreckage was swept into the rubble zone by the turbulent currents. The detectors show no signs of life!”
The heart Lin An’an had been holding suspended finally dropped solidly back into place.
He let out a long breath, only then realizing that his hand had been clutching Feng Wu’s wrist so tightly that it had nearly left bruising marks.
—They had won.
