Chapter 75
The crimson signal point on the screen was drawing closer and closer to them, edging ever nearer to the boundary of the Rockfall Zone.
Feng Wu split the special operations team into two groups. One group would pilot their mechas in close, infiltrate the Kailuo Stone starship, and the other would remain in agile combat craft, waiting for instructions from the first wave.
The first assault team, naturally, consisted entirely of elites from the special task force.
Si Youlin stayed behind with the second group as commander. Xiong Yingjun, meanwhile, followed Feng Wu and, together with ten other task force members, formed the assault squad.
More than a dozen mechas crowded onto the battleship hangar deck, making what had seemed like a spacious hall suddenly feel cramped.
Leading them was, of course, Feng Wu’s Silver Armor. By now, Silver Armor no longer retained its original silver-white appearance. With stealth mode activated, the entire mecha had turned pitch-black, as though it might merge seamlessly into the dark universe at any second.
Si Youlin and the rest of the task force members stood to one side. He stepped forward and patted Xiong Yingjun’s Titan Bear and Feng Wu’s Silver Armor, then swept his gaze across the surrounding mechas and said softly, “Be careful.”
Titan Bear raised a mechanical arm and gave him a small wave.
Silver Armor dipped its head in acknowledgment. As the battleship hatch opened, it was the first to leap out, vanishing at once into the dark void.
Lin An’an sat in Silver Armor’s co-pilot seat. In front of him was the monitoring screen tracking the Kailuo Stone starship.
At some point, eleven green dots and one blue dot had appeared on the display. The blue one represented Silver Armor; the remaining eleven green dots marked the positions of the other assault-team members.
The screen showed them drawing ever closer to the crimson target.
Feng Wu wore a concealed black-gray combat suit. Over his right eye sat a monocular tactical visor, across which strings of complex data and colored positional markers flashed from time to time.
“The target is nearing the edge of the Rockfall Zone,” Xiong Yingjun’s voice came through the mecha channel. “Do we continue closing in?”
“Maintain concealment. Continue advancing,” Feng Wu replied.
They were already extremely close to the edge of the Rockfall Zone. The crackling sounds from the turbulent currents had grown sharper and more deafening, as if every second brought hundreds or thousands of explosions caused by colliding shards of stone.
Going any closer would be highly dangerous, but the turbulence near the Rockfall Zone would also interfere with the Kailuo Stone starship’s system judgment.
If they wanted to infiltrate the target ship unnoticed, this was their best chance.
Lin An’an pressed his lips together, staring fixedly at the signal points on the screen.
The crimson point drew closer and closer, and Lin An’an noticed that the twelve mechas had nearly sealed off all of the starship’s potential routes forward.
No matter which direction the ship chose after exiting the Rockfall Zone, it would inevitably end up drawing nearer to them.
Xiong Yingjun’s voice sounded again. “The target has exited the Rockfall Zone.”
Lin An’an glanced at the display. At the boundary of the Rockfall Zone in the distance, the outline of an enormous vessel had come faintly into view.
That massive black-and-silver warship had clearly been battered by the turbulent currents, moving only slowly, its hull marred by heavy damage. It was obvious that passing through the Rockfall Zone had not been easy for them either.
The vessel had made very little attempt at disguise. It simply appeared brazenly within their field of vision.
—Were they too confident in themselves, assuming that no one in the Galactic System would dare approach a vessel carrying such a terrifying amount of Kailuo Stones?
Then again, they probably still had no idea that Lin An’an’s ability could directly erase the radiation contained within Kailuo Stones.
For the Galactic System, Kailuo Stone radiation was indeed a terrible weapon—but it was not completely impossible to resist.
Second by second, time ticked by. Feng Wu fixed his eyes on the display, his dark-gold gaze steady and resolute. “Move.”
At that single command, the twelve mechas that had been lying in wait sprang into motion almost simultaneously.
Lin An’an drew in a sharp breath and gripped the safety strap at his waist.
“Don’t be afraid,” Feng Wu’s voice suddenly said. “You don’t need to do anything. Just stay with me.”
Lin An’an turned to look at him. Feng Wu’s gaze remained locked on the screen ahead, focused and razor-sharp. His hands danced over the floating display, his fingers moving so fast they almost blurred.
In that instant, Lin An’an calmed down. The tension that had just begun to tighten in his chest eased at once.
“Alright,” Lin An’an nodded.
The Kailuo Stone starship loomed larger and larger before them. Lin An’an’s pupils contracted. “It’s huge…”
The ship truly was enormous—no less imposing than the battleship they themselves had come in.
And if, just as Xia Yuanhan and the people from X Galaxy had said, this entire ship was loaded with Kailuo Stones—
Lin An’an did not dare imagine what the Empire—or rather, the whole Galactic System—would become if these Kailuo Stones were truly deployed within Imperial territory.
“One team per two men. Handle entry points one through five separately,” Feng Wu said rapidly. “Xiong Yingjun comes with me. We breach from below.”
On the screen, the green dot representing Titan Bear shifted direction and soon arrived near Silver Armor.
The entry point below was the starship’s energy chamber. Every starship had one, housing the energy crystals that powered the ship.
The defensive systems around this chamber were always the strongest on the entire vessel, but for that very reason, personnel surveillance here tended to be weaker than elsewhere.
Ordinary attacks were useless against the energy chamber, but as long as its defensive systems were metal-based, then to Feng Wu, it was effectively standing wide open.
Though the turbulent currents around the Rockfall Zone were relatively small, they were densely packed. No matter how exceptional Feng Wu’s piloting skills were, Silver Armor still shook from time to time.
Lin An’an popped a peppermint candy into his mouth, crushed it between his teeth, and let it melt there, minimizing the physical discomfort as much as possible.
Using the unstable air currents stirred up by the turbulence as cover, Silver Armor and Titan Bear successfully approached the starship without being detected.
The other five sub-teams also reported successful approach one after another.
Feng Wu quickly pinpointed the location of the starship’s energy chamber. He controlled Silver Armor’s speed, bringing it to a steady stop beneath the chamber.
“Silver Armor, switch to autopilot mode. Match flight speed.”
“Autopilot mode engaged,” Silver Armor replied.
Feng Wu unfastened the safety belt at his waist, then leaned over and unbuckled Lin An’an’s as well. “Open the upper hatch.”
With a soft sound, Silver Armor’s head section opened backward. Lin An’an looked up and saw the black-gray hull of the Kailuo Stone ship above them.
The wind whipped up by the currents around the Rockfall Zone instantly poured into Silver Armor’s cockpit. Lin An’an had to brace himself against the surrounding structure just to keep from being blown off his feet.
Feng Wu, however, seemed almost unaffected. With easy, agile movements, he leapt out of the cockpit, crouched low, and pressed one palm against the black-gray hull.
A steady stream of metal-element ability surged from his hand, spreading over the outer plating. Very soon, his power melted a circular opening in the hull—large enough for two people to pass through without issue.
Feng Wu did not enter immediately. Instead, cautious as ever, he first sent a tiny detector through the opening to scan the conditions inside.
A moment later, he bent down and extended a hand toward Lin An’an, who was still inside the cockpit. “Come.”
With his help, Lin An’an climbed up and out.
The air currents outside were even more violent. One arm around Lin An’an’s waist, Feng Wu pulled out a safety cord from somewhere and swiftly bound Lin An’an to himself.
“Hold on to me,” Feng Wu said, lowering his head slightly. The vibration in his chest as he spoke transmitted clearly to Lin An’an, who was pressed tightly against him.
Lin An’an immediately wrapped both arms and both legs around him. The pose was a bit awkward, but it interfered the least with Feng Wu’s movements.
Feng Wu pressed a hand to the back of Lin An’an’s head, tucking his face against his chest. “Ready?”
Lin An’an murmured an assent.
In the next second, Feng Wu’s hands caught the edge of the opening. His arms tensed, muscles standing out, and his whole body shot inside like a nimble hunting leopard.
Even carrying a full-grown person, his speed and agility remained unaffected.
Once Lin An’an was safely inside, Feng Wu recalled Silver Armor into the mecha storage space.
Straightening up, Lin An’an studied the environment around them. A faint fluctuation of Kailuo Stone energy drifted through the air.
He frowned. “That’s strange.”
Feng Wu asked, “What is it?”
“The fluctuations from the Kailuo Stone energy are way too weak,” Lin An’an said. “There’s less energy in the air here than there is on a person already suffering from Alpha.”
Could it be that this was not the real ship transporting Kailuo Stones at all?
Feng Wu rested a hand against the metal wall of the chamber. After a moment, he said, “There’s Gata metal.”
Lin An’an blinked in surprise. “They used Gata metal to block the Kailuo Stone energy?”
For the moment, he could not make sense of what the people from X Galaxy were trying to do.
Soon after, Xiong Yingjun also came through the opening into the chamber. Feng Wu activated the internal comms. “Other teams, report.”
Unexpectedly, all five sub-teams had made it into the ship without any obstruction. They had encountered no resistance at all, and even the vessel’s defensive systems had felt as flimsy as paper.
It was as though… as though the enemy had not put any actual defensive measures in place to begin with.
Feng Wu’s brows drew together, but his tone remained calm and controlled. “Teams One, Three, and Five: maintain stealth and locate the Kailuo Stone storage rooms. Xiong Yingjun, protect An—His Highness the Third Prince. Teams Two and Four, follow me.”
Lin An’an asked, “Where are you going?”
“To the main control room,” Feng Wu replied.
No matter how strange this starship was, the simplest rule still held true—capture the leader first. As long as they found whoever was controlling the ship, all their questions would have answers.
