Chapter 72

Xia Yuanhan’s face was so dark it looked as though water could drip from it, but Lin An’an had no intention of wasting any more words on him. He forcefully stuffed two pills into Xia Yuanhan’s mouth and made him swallow them.

With Feng Wu helping, Xia Yuanhan had no way to break free. The pills were forced down his throat into his stomach, where they dissolved and took effect almost instantly.

He dry-heaved twice, his face turning a sickly gray-green.

“Brother Wolf, he signed a spiritual contract with the people from X Galaxy.” Lin An’an tilted his head slightly.

Feng Wu stepped forward, pressed a hand to the top of Xia Yuanhan’s head, and a powerful surge of spiritual energy poured out from his palm. In just a few short seconds, he erased the trace of the spiritual contract.

This time, he did not hold back. Erasing a spiritual contract that did not share the same origin would, to some extent, inevitably damage Xia Yuanhan’s spiritual power.

Xia Yuanhan let out a miserable scream, and all the color drained from his face at once.

Before the interrogation began, Lin An’an had deliberately set up a virtual camera nearby. He intended to record the entire questioning process so it could later be used as evidence in the public trial.

He took out the list of questions he had prepared beforehand. “When did you start cooperating with X Galaxy?”

Under the influence of the drug, Xia Yuanhan had no choice but to answer. “Five years ago.”

Five years ago—that matched exactly with the time Alpha Syndrome first appeared.

Lin An’an asked, “Why did you cooperate with them?”

Xia Yuanhan replied, “Mutual benefit.”

Lin An’an said, “Be more specific.”

Xia Yuanhan ground his teeth. “I wanted a higher position. They promised to help me get what I wanted. And they needed more high-quality raw materials for their mechanical-human transformation work. Our galaxy just so happened to have no shortage of that kind of material.”

“High-quality raw materials?” Lin An’an seemed to realize something. His gaze darkened. “What exactly do you mean?”

“You already guessed it, didn’t you?” Xia Yuanhan pulled at the corner of his mouth. “People like the Marshal standing behind you—humans who are exceptionally outstanding in one area or another. They need this kind of high-quality human material for their high-grade mechanical transformation project.”

Lin An’an closed his eyes. In that moment, the fury inside him nearly reached its peak.

No wonder. No wonder so many former elites, powerful figures, and influential people were living on Sin Star. Those people had already gone through one round—or perhaps several rounds—of selection without even knowing it.

And no wonder that among Xia Yuanhan’s close confidants, other than the few he had deliberately sent to Sin Star, none of them had contracted Alpha Syndrome.

Aside from the so-called “high-quality raw materials” chosen by them, everyone else was probably nothing more than background filler.

To Xia Yuanhan and the people of X Galaxy, human lives probably meant less than a pile of cold experiment data.

Feng Wu sensed the fluctuation in Lin An’an’s emotions. He stepped forward, placed both hands on Lin An’an’s shoulders, and pressed down slightly. “Let me take over the rest of the interrogation.”

Lin An’an opened his eyes. “Brother Wolf, I can do it.”

He turned around and looked straight at Feng Wu. In his dark eyes, his anger was obvious, but even more obvious was the kind of firm resolve that refused to accept objection.

After a moment of eye contact, Feng Wu was the one who yielded. He did not say anything more about making Lin An’an rest. Instead, he moved to stand slightly behind him, offering silent support.

Seeing this, Xia Yuanhan gave a mocking laugh. “My dear little brother, and this much is already enough to get you worked up? You’re still just as coward—mmph!”

Lin An’an punched him in the face, cutting off the rest of his words.

Xia Yuanhan spat a mouthful of blood to the side. “What, can’t hold it in anymore? Didn’t you specifically record a video? Aren’t you afraid that when the footage gets released, the whole galaxy will see how their ‘savior’ abuses a pitiful, helpless prisoner?”

“…Xia Yuanhan, I truly didn’t expect that after being locked up for less than a day, your brain would already be rotten.” Lin An’an let out a cold snort. “Videos can be edited, can’t they? I’m not forging a fake video. I’m just cutting out some useless parts. That still leaves a usable video, doesn’t it?”

Xia Yuanhan’s expression shifted slightly. Lin An’an stepped forward and grabbed him by the chin, squeezing hard enough to leave dark bruised finger marks behind.

“Right here, right now, I’m the one calling the shots.” Lin An’an’s voice was soft and slow.

Once he finished speaking, he straightened up. The hand that had just gripped Xia Yuanhan’s chin was immediately caught by Feng Wu, and Lin An’an felt something faintly cool glide over the back of his hand and between his fingers.

He turned to look in confusion, only to see that Feng Wu had somehow produced a clean handkerchief and was carefully wiping his hand down with a frown.

“…Brother Wolf?”

“It’s too dirty. I’m disinfecting it for you.” Feng Wu said seriously, “Next time, let me handle this.”

Lin An’an curved his eyes into a smile. “All right. Just remember to wear gloves.”

Beside them, Xia Yuanhan said, “I say, you two—”

Feng Wu shot him a glance. Invisible spiritual power, sharp as a blade flashing with cold light, pierced through Xia Yuanhan’s spiritual sea and came to rest right against the outside of his spiritual core.

He did not say a single word, yet Xia Yuanhan clearly felt the threat.

It was as if, if he said even one more word, that spiritual blade would pierce his spiritual core without hesitation.

Bone-deep killing intent surged over him. Cold sweat slid down Xia Yuanhan’s face, and he shut his mouth immediately.

The interrogation continued. The next several questions were things they already knew; asking them again was merely to preserve them on video as evidence.

Feng Wu’s threat worked extremely well. After several rounds of questions, Xia Yuanhan cooperated surprisingly obediently. He did not waste a single extra word.

Once the evidence recording was complete, Lin An’an asked, “Where are the people from X Galaxy right now?”

“I don’t know.” Xia Yuanhan shook his head.

Lin An’an glanced at the time. The truth drug had not yet worn off, which meant Xia Yuanhan was telling the truth.

Xia Yuanhan gave them a faint smile. “He never tells me where he is. If you want to know where they are now, you’ll have to see whether you can find them yourselves.”

Lin An’an stared at him for a moment, then changed the question. “Fine. Then I won’t ask where they are. Tell me why they left. What did they leave to do? Is it connected to the next phase of your plan?”

Xia Yuanhan’s face changed slightly, but his mouth still moved against his will. “…Lan Ersite left because your appearance disrupted our original plan. He decided to activate Plan X ahead of schedule.”

“Plan X?” Lin An’an narrowed his eyes. “Explain.”

Xia Yuanhan bit down, trying to resist the drug’s effects. Lin An’an shook the bottle of pills in his hand and said, “Don’t bother trying to stall for time. I still have a whole bottle here. Even if you’re waiting for the medicine to wear off before talking, it won’t do you any good.”

Feng Wu’s fingers twitched. In perfect coordination, the spiritual blade still pressing against Xia Yuanhan’s mind moved slightly deeper.

A sharp pain shot through Xia Yuanhan’s spiritual core. He unclenched his jaw and closed his eyes.

“Lan Ersite is preparing to transport Kailuo Stones into the Galactic System.”

Lin An’an frowned. “The antidote for Alpha—the antidote for Kailuo Stone radiation—has already been developed. You should know that this kind of method doesn’t really count as much of a threat to us anymore.”

“Doesn’t count as much of a threat?” Xia Yuanhan gave a low laugh. “Lan Ersite has prepared an entire starship full of Kailuo Stones. Do you really think the treatment speed of the antidote—or even your own treatment speed—can keep up with the rate at which people’s bodies collapse after developing Alpha?”

Lin An’an’s expression changed sharply. An entire starship of Kailuo Stones?!

He still remembered vividly how fast the radiation had spread last time when the X Galaxy people used the Kailuo Stones in that fissure to launch a radiation attack, and how quickly the conditions of those directly exposed had worsened.

And the quantity of Kailuo Stones they used then—not to mention a whole starship—probably would not even have filled a single bathroom on one.

This time, the amount of Kailuo Stone was likely hundreds, thousands, perhaps even tens of thousands of times greater than before.

If that entire starship of Kailuo Stones truly reached the Galactic System and was deployed onto some planet, then the scale of the devastation—

Lin An’an hardly dared imagine it any further. “A bunch of lunatics!”

His voice came out hoarse with fury, but he quickly steadied himself again and asked, “When is the attack scheduled to happen?”

“I don’t know,” Xia Yuanhan said.

Lin An’an pressed on. “What about the target location? The Federation or the Empire? Which planet?”

“I don’t know.” Xia Yuanhan’s smile widened.

Lin An’an asked again, “How many people are they sending?”

“I don’t know.” Xia Yuanhan smiled even more broadly.

For all the next questions, Xia Yuanhan gave the same answer—until Lin An’an asked about the Zerg.

Only then did he finally hear something different.

“Yes, the people from X Galaxy really did make a move against the Zerg.” Xia Yuanhan said softly. “They captured the Zerg Queen and turned her into a mechanical hybrid… otherwise, why do you think the Zerg have shown no activity all these years? You don’t actually believe they suddenly developed a conscience and stopped fighting us because we were being tormented by Alpha, do you?”

Lin An’an asked, “Will the X Galaxy people use the Zerg in this operation?”

Xia Yuanhan looked at him with a smile. “Sorry. The answer to that one is also: I don’t know.”

He suddenly burst into mad laughter, the sound shrill and crazed. “Give up, my dear little brother! You’ll never beat them! The ones who’ll win will only ever be us! Only us!!!”

Yet hearing that answer did not provoke Lin An’an the way Xia Yuanhan probably intended. If anything, Lin An’an became even calmer.

“Second Brother,” Lin An’an said quietly, “you don’t actually still believe that after this, the people from X Galaxy are going to keep their promise and come save you, do you?”

“Whether they keep it or not isn’t up to them.” Xia Yuanhan sneered. “You may have destroyed the spiritual contract on my end, but Lan Ersite’s contract is still intact on his side. Even if they want to break it, they can’t.”

“Do you know why the people of X Galaxy revere mechanical-body transformation so much?” Lin An’an asked.

Xia Yuanhan paused.

“To escape the control of the flesh and spirit entirely. To become, completely and utterly, a machine no longer bound by any human law or rule. That is their goal.” Lin An’an’s voice was light, almost like a whisper. “Do you understand what I mean?”

Xia Yuanhan very clearly did. His face changed at once, and his pupils constricted sharply.

“For them, spiritual contracts very likely mean absolutely nothing. My foolish second brother—you were fooled from beginning to end.” Lin An’an’s expression was mocking, almost pitying. “In their eyes, you were never anything more than a clown.”
