Chapter 51

The next day, Feng Wu brought Lin An’an to the research team’s safe house right on time.

“Yesterday’s tests were for physical condition and general bodily functions,” Yan Xiu said, pushing up his glasses as he looked at Lin An’an. “Today will be a full assessment of your abilities, so you’ll need to use your powers.”

Lin An’an did not refuse. He obediently lay down inside the testing pod.

A gentle female voice sounded from inside the pod, instructing Lin An’an to use his abilities at different marked points within the chamber.

Feng Wu remained by his side as always. Perhaps because of what had happened the day before, Yan Xiu did not once again ask Feng Wu to leave the room. Instead, he tacitly allowed him to stay and watch the whole process.

After the ability test ended, another researcher came over with an instrument in hand. “We’ll need to draw a small blood sample.”

Feng Wu’s brows immediately knitted together. “This is an ability test. Why is a blood sample necessary?”

“Please cooperate, Marshal Feng,” Yan Xiu said. “Blood collection is a standard part of basic testing, no matter what kind of examination is being conducted.”

Lin An’an shook his head at Feng Wu, signaling that he was fine, then extended one of his little tentacles toward the researcher.

Once the blood draw was done, Feng Wu asked in a low voice, “Is today’s testing over?”

“It is.”

After leaving the safe house with Lin An’an, Feng Wu asked, “The blood draw wasn’t actually required, was it?”

Lin An’an nodded. “That’s right. Blood sampling is indeed a standard test item, but it isn’t needed for ability-related examinations.”

So today’s blood draw clearly had another purpose. Lin An’an guessed that because Feng Wu had refused to leave the lab, disrupting Yan Xiu’s original plan, they had been forced to switch to a backup method.

Feng Wu gave a faint nod.

Looks like the little thing he had secretly planted on Yan Xiu yesterday could be put to use ahead of schedule.

Just then, Feng Wu received a call from Si Youlin.

“Boss, he’s making his move.”

Yan Xiu—or rather, Second Prince Xia Yuanhan—was even more impatient than they had expected.

Lin An’an and Feng Wu had originally thought the other side would lie low for a while first, waiting until they had gained their trust before taking further action.

Who would have thought that on only their second day on Sin Star, they would already be unable to hold back?

What Feng Wu had planted on Yan Xiu the day before was a microscopic surveillance device of his own making. Unless the other party was also a metal-type ability user and of a higher rank than Feng Wu, no one would be able to detect such a tiny piece of equipment.

Meanwhile, Si Youlin and Xiong Yingjun had taken on the job of remote monitoring.

The moment he received Si Youlin’s warning, Feng Wu immediately changed direction, preparing to slip back into the safe house unnoticed.

[Wolf Bro, I’m coming with you—]

Before Lin An’an could finish, Feng Wu cut him off. “No. I’ll go alone.”

The little cub looked up at him, his dark little face plainly spelling out the words absolutely not.

“Be good,” Feng Wu said, softening his voice. Then, as if he had suddenly thought of something, his expression turned a little unnatural.

Lin An’an was still wondering what was going on when Feng Wu continued, “This kind of thing should be handled by me. You just need to…” He paused, then gave a light cough. “You just need to stay at home obediently and enjoy the joy of victory. Everything you want, I’ll place before you with my own hands.”

Lin An’an: “…???”

He instinctively touched his ear. Had he just hallucinated?

At that exact moment, a huge black bear came running over from the distance.

Taking advantage of Lin An’an’s stunned state, Feng Wu swiftly handed him over to Xiong Yingjun, then turned and left at once.

Lin An’an sharply caught the fleeting trace of embarrassment on Feng Wu’s face.

Embarrassment…?

If he felt embarrassed, then why—why did he still say something that weird?!

Seeing Lin An’an keep staring in the direction Feng Wu had left, the big black bear thought he was worried about him. [An’zai, don’t worry. Boss will be fine.]

[I’m not worried something will happen to him. I know Wolf Bro is strong.] Lin An’an shook his head, his beady eyes full of bafflement, confusion, and shock.

Xiong Yingjun was equally puzzled. [Then what’s wrong?]

[…Nothing.] After a moment of silence, Lin An’an decided not to say anything for now. Better to observe a little longer first and see whether Wolf Bro had suffered some kind of strange mental blow.

Xiong Yingjun carried Lin An’an back to the farmhouse villa.

Si Youlin was still watching the feed from the surveillance device. Seeing that, Lin An’an immediately changed back into human form and hurried over.

Just then, on the light screen, Feng Wu lifted his leg and sent the energy gun in Yan Xiu’s hand flying away with a kick. Even through the screen, the fierce sweep of those long legs made Lin An’an catch his breath.

…So, so handsome!

Yan Xiu fell to the ground with a cry. Feng Wu made an “all good” gesture toward the surveillance device, then shut it off.

Lin An’an knew Feng Wu had already succeeded. He covered his heart, which was thumping wildly, and took a deep breath.

Xiong Yingjun noticed that something seemed off about him and asked with concern, “An’an, what’s wrong?”

Lin An’an turned his face slightly away, unwilling to let him see his flushed cheeks. “I’m fine.”

With that, he bolted straight for his room. “I’m going to change clothes. I’ll be right out!”

Si Youlin looked at the tips of his reddened ears and murmured thoughtfully, “Even the little detail of his ears turning red first is exactly the same…”

Xiong Yingjun hadn’t heard clearly. “What ears?”

“Nothing.” Si Youlin withdrew his gaze.

From the moment the research team set off, the trending lists on both StarNet and SinNet had been packed with related topics and showed no sign of dropping.

Even Xia Yuanhan posted on his Starblog, saying he hoped the research would proceed smoothly and that the people of Sin Star would soon be freed from their suffering.

But what no one across the galaxy expected was that on the second day after the research team arrived on Sin Star, the trending list exploded again.

Only this time, it wasn’t because some new treatment method had been developed.

It was a scandal.

The head of the research team, Yan Xiu, had been exposed for attempting to use Lin An’an’s genes to carry out illegal experiments. Marshal Feng had discovered it in time, and both witnesses and evidence had been secured.

The moment this topic shot to the top, the entire galaxy erupted.

[He dared make a move on An’zai? Who gave him the nerve?!]

[Holy crap, illegal gene experiments? Wouldn’t that damage the body?!]

[Could there have been a misunderstanding? Maybe the researchers just wanted to use his genes to figure out why An’zai can treat Alpha?]

[I also feel like it might be a misunderstanding. At a moment like this, who would dare touch An’zai?]

[Absolutely impossible that it’s a misunderstanding. Marshal Feng posted all the evidence they found on Starblog!!!]

[The research team leader is called Yan Xiu? Why does that name sound kind of familiar…?]

[I remember now! Years ago there was also a researcher exposed for illegal gene experiments. Wasn’t it him?]

[It was him! But later it got dropped because of insufficient evidence…]

[Holy crap, then this time the charges are basically confirmed?]

[How did the Second Prince choose his people? Why did he send this kind of person to Sin Star?!]

[I have a bold thought. Yan Xiu is just a small-time researcher. He wouldn’t dare do something this big on his own. Could it be… [the more you think about it, the scarier it gets jpg]]

[Protect our An’zai, ahhhh!]

The research team sent by Xia Yuanhan had only stayed on Sin Star for a single day before being sent right back to Capital Star.

Waiting for them would be a whole series of investigations and trials.

Inside Aimeo Palace on Capital Star, Xia Yuanhan was so furious he overturned the tea table again.

Fan Xiu, standing nearby, shrank his neck and very experiencedly dodged the object that had nearly smashed into his head.

“Yan Xiu, that bastard—” Xia Yuanhan’s voice trembled with rage.

Fan Xiu said cautiously, “Could it be… could it be that Marshal Feng and the others discovered something?”

“If they had already become suspicious, they would never have accepted the team we sent in the first place,” Xia Yuanhan said coldly.

Allowing Yan Xiu to conduct genetic experiments had been one of the conditions Xia Yuanhan offered him—but only if Yan Xiu could complete his mission.

That mission was to determine the true identity of the monster cub through genetic comparison, and then find a way to destroy his ability core.

But now, never mind destroying the ability core—they hadn’t even managed to confirm who that monster cub really was before everything blew up.

The only thing Xia Yuanhan was thankful for was that he and Yan Xiu had signed a spirit contract. Even under severe interrogation, Yan Xiu would not be able to reveal anything detrimental to him.

Fan Xiu lowered his head. “Then, Your Highness… what now?”

“We can only send someone else,” Xia Yuanhan said.

Yet before he could even begin selecting a new candidate, he saw a fresh trending topic shoot up.

Feng Wu had already arranged a new cooperating team and made it clear that all future partnerships would have to pass his personal review.

“What a pity. Yan Xiu must have signed some kind of spiritual agreement with Xia Yuanhan. He can’t say a single word that would harm him,” Feng Wu said.

Lin An’an smiled. “It’s fine. At least now we have a reason to reject Xia Yuanhan and anyone else with ill intentions.”

Feng Wu gave a quiet hum, his gaze falling to Lin An’an’s hand.

“Did it hurt?” he asked.

Lin An’an blinked. “Did what hurt?”

Feng Wu said, “When they drew your blood earlier. Did it hurt?”

“No.” Lin An’an shook his head blankly. “I barely felt anything.”

“That’s good.” Feng Wu looked at him seriously. “If anyone dares hurt even a single hair on your head in the future, I will make them understand what kind of end awaits those who dare touch someone of mine.”

Lin An’an: “…?”

What, what kind of cringe line was that?!

[pupils shaking jpg]

After saying that, Feng Wu coughed lightly, stood up, and said, “I’m going to the kitchen to help Old Four. You… get some proper rest.”

Lin An’an stared blankly at Feng Wu’s back as he walked into the kitchen.

Beside him came Xiong Yingjun’s amazed exclamation. “Wow! Did Boss just pick that up on his own? He can say lines like that now? That’s just—”

Lin An’an: “So weird.”

Xiong Yingjun: “Cool as hell!”

“What’s weird about it?!” Xiong Yingjun protested, eyes wide. “That’s a classic overbearing-CEO line! That kind of wild, domineering, cool, and arrogant dialogue fits Boss’s identity perfectly!”

Lin An’an: “…”

[too complicated to describe jpg]

Wait, classic overbearing-CEO line?

Lin An’an froze, suddenly recalling something he had casually joked about to Feng Wu the day before. At the time, he had said Wolf Bro was kind of like an overbearing CEO…

Lin An’an fell into silence. Could it be that Wolf Bro had started, uh… studying all this overbearing-CEO stuff just because of that one sentence yesterday?

Xiong Yingjun, meanwhile, was babbling away beside him, discussing classic CEO plotlines with the consciousness of his mech, Giant Overbearing Bear. In the middle of it, Giant Overbearing Bear’s rough voice suddenly cut in:

“Oh right, Silver Armor asked me yesterday for a reading list of CEO novels.”

Xiong Yingjun said, puzzled, “Didn’t you already give him one?”

“That was different,” Giant Overbearing Bear said righteously. “Silver Armor said this batch was for Marshal Feng, so I carefully compiled a full list of every CEO novel from ancient times to the present…”

Lin An’an, who had heard the whole conversation: “…”

At that moment, Feng Wu came out carrying a dish. He had obviously heard what Xiong Yingjun and Giant Overbearing Bear had been saying—his ears were red enough to drip blood.

Lin An’an chose his words carefully. “Wolf Bro, you…”

Feng Wu forced himself to sound calm. “What?”

“Those CEO lines…” Lin An’an gave a light cough. “You’d better stop learning them in the future.”

Feng Wu was stunned. “You… you don’t like them?”

“It’s not that.” Lin An’an carefully glanced at him. “It’s just… well… I still like the way you used to talk more.”

If Wolf Bro kept saying things like that, he was afraid he’d be able to claw out an entire castle with his toes.

Feng Wu blinked slowly once. “Alright.”

He turned and went back into the kitchen, his back somehow carrying the unmistakable air of someone fleeing the scene in embarrassment.

Lin An’an watched his retreating figure, stroking his chin as he fell into deep thought.

Could it be that Wolf Bro… was trying to woo him?
