Chapter 34
The effects of the healing fruits gradually began to spread by word of mouth. Although the vast majority of people still remained skeptical and chose to watch from the sidelines, the sales of healing fruits and vegetables were increasing day by day.
Even the style of Lin An’an’s livestream kept changing again and again.
The doubts were still there, but at least no one was saying anymore that they were going to throw rotten eggs at the mysterious robe-wearing guy.
Si Youlin was pleasantly surprised by this. “Not bad at all. Looks like wearing protective clothing under the robe really was the right move.”
At once, Lin An’an’s beady eyes widened. His little tentacles stirred eagerly, as if he wanted to lift the black robe and see whether he was really wearing protective gear underneath.
The little cub’s intentions were too obvious. Si Youlin generously pulled up his sleeve, revealing the equally black protective clothing underneath.
“The quality is excellent,” Si Youlin praised. “Apparently it wouldn’t tear even if it got hit by a thousand rotten eggs.”
Lin An’an was deeply shaken.
Whether the protective suit tore or not was one thing, but if a thousand rotten eggs actually got smashed onto someone, wouldn’t they be marinated through and through by then?
“Not necessarily,” Si Youlin said after giving it some serious thought. “As long as the protective suit doesn’t tear, the one getting marinated won’t be the person—it’ll be the robe outside.”
[Then Brother Snake, you’d better keep it on for now,] the little cub typed with a solemn expression. [Just in case. We should not put ourselves in danger.]
Si Youlin smiled and agreed.
It was another day of livestreaming. Lin An’an was at the farm, and behind him, two busy farming mechs were hard at work.
Shi Xiaoxing was inside one of them, and Xiong Yingjun—dragged in to help speed things along—was in the other.
Happy Farm no longer had the barren look it once did. It had long since been filled with all kinds of fruits and vegetables.
Lin An’an had divided Happy Farm into sections. One area was dedicated specifically to fruit, another to vegetables, and he had even carved out a small corner specifically for medicinal herbs.
Within both the fruit and vegetable sections, there were further divisions into ordinary produce and healing produce.
Looking out over the whole farm, everything was thriving beautifully. The green sea of growth was dotted with bright colors, making the entire place exceedingly pleasing to the eye.
[Every time I’m in a bad mood, I just come into cubby’s livestream and take one look at the farm, and instantly I feel happier. [waving and shouting jpg]]
[Not me. Being able to see it but not eat it is just too painful. [crying wildly jpg]]
[Baby An, Baby An, there are a few questions we want to ask Brother Robe. Can you help pass them along, qwq?]
[“Brother Roe-Deer” my ass, hahaha, it’s Brother Robe!]
Seeing the barrage comments, Lin An’an waved a little tentacle and adjusted the direction of the virtual camera so that Si Youlin, who was sitting not far from him, appeared on screen.
Disguised as the mysterious figure, Si Youlin raised a hand and waved toward the camera. His voice, altered by the disguise mask, came out from beneath the wide hood.
“I’m here. If you have questions, go ahead and ask.”
[!!! So Brother Roe really is right there beside you?!]
[Wow, is Brother Roe here to restock today? Does that mean we might get fresh healing fruit this afternoon?! [expectant starry eyes jpg]]
[Brother Roe, look at me, Brother Roe! There’s been so much uploading about this on CrimeNet but still no official response. I just want to ask whether those healing fruits and vegetables can really treat Alpha. [nervously chewing fingers jpg]]
[How did everyone suddenly start calling him Brother Roe now? [I must not laugh… pfft jpg]]
[Brother Roe sounds friendlier. Calling him Brother Robe makes us seem too distant. [doge jpg]]
[I really want to know—if I keep eating healing produce, every day, every meal, is there any chance Alpha could actually be cured? [let me dream a little jpg]]
The questions in the barrage were all sorts of strange and random, but fortunately, Lin An’an had already gone over most of them with Si Youlin beforehand.
Si Youlin answered with a proper mysterious-person manner:
“It doesn’t count as a cure.”
“No matter how much you eat, it won’t lead to full recovery. It can only ease symptoms.”
“Please consume in moderation, and protect your wallet.”
[Hahaha I’m dying. Even if I want to buy more, Brother Roe won’t let me. [sighing angrily jpg]]
[So it can’t cure it? My dream is shattered, wuwuwuwu.]
[Being able to ease it is already very good! Don’t ask for too much!]
[When my Alpha flares up, it really hurts. Like, really hurts. Even swallowing painkillers does nothing. So even if it can’t cure me, as long as Brother Roe’s healing produce makes it hurt less, I’m already completely satisfied. [crying wildly jpg]]
The barrage section flowed with comment after comment, and the screen full of “Brother Roe” was so funny to Lin An’an that he wanted to laugh. His little tentacles covered his mouth as his whole dumpling-like body trembled from holding it in.
Si Youlin glanced at him helplessly and thought to himself that, strictly speaking, “Brother Roe” wasn’t even referring to him.
A few days later, Feng Wu and Lin An’an made another trip to the secondhand repair shop.
The third farming mech had already been finished several days ago. They waited until the second new set of pharmaceutical equipment was completed before finally making time to go and pick everything up together.
The new pharmaceutical equipment was very good to use. In terms of design, it was much closer to the kind of equipment Lin An’an was familiar with, and its functions were more complete as well.
The very night he got the new equipment, Lin An’an eagerly started testing how to use it. He became so absorbed that he almost forgot to eat dinner.
In the end, Feng Wu had to knock on the door, come in, and drag the completely engrossed youth out of the pharmaceutical room.
Lin An’an hadn’t actually been making medicine—he had only been testing the functions of the new equipment one by one—so Feng Wu wasn’t worried about interrupting anything.
“Eat dinner first, then continue,” he said.
Lin An’an snapped back to himself, touched his already-flattened belly, and with a puxiu changed back into his little cub form, then very consciously hopped into Feng Wu’s palm.
At the end of dinner, Feng Wu received a video call.
The name on the light screen was unfamiliar—Mo Dexin. Lin An’an had never seen it before. He was just about to jump down and leave the room to avoid the call when Feng Wu suddenly pressed down on his forehead to stop him.
So that meant… he didn’t need to leave?
The little cub tilted up his head and saw Feng Wu open the video without the slightest sign of wanting to avoid anyone.
At the side, Si Youlin saw this, and a trace of thoughtfulness flickered faintly in his eyes.
The screen sprang open, and a sheet of cold white nearly blinded Lin An’an’s little beady eyes.
The little cub: “……”
Didn’t dare make a sound.
But still had to yingji a little.
The man on the screen, whose skin was several shades paler than an ordinary person’s, spoke first. “Boss. Old Four.”
Xiong Yingjun immediately shoved his face forward. “And me too! Old Two, how could you forget me?”
Mo Dexin gave him a sidelong glance and lightly parted his lips. “…Heh.”
Xiong Yingjun: “???” Are you targeting me on purpose?
Mo Dexin said, “Old Three.”
And just like that, Bear Old Three sat back down, perfectly satisfied.
The moment Lin An’an heard that form of address, he immediately identified the man. One of the deputy commanders of the First Legion—the second-ranked one.
So his name was Mo Dexin. The little cub’s tentacles suddenly trembled.
Mo Dexin… “No Virtue, No Heart”… He couldn’t laugh. Ah-pu!
The First Legion had four commanders total—one chief and three deputies. Three of them had gone to Sin Star, leaving only Mo Dexin, the second-ranked one, still stubbornly holding out at the legion.
Although the three people far away on Sin Star could still handle some matters over terminal, the majority of the legion’s affairs had fallen onto Mo Dexin’s shoulders.
Especially the pressure that the other legions were applying against the First Legion—there was simply no way the three of them on Sin Star could help with that.
Mo Dexin was so busy he was practically spinning in circles, and he rarely had time for a video call like this.
Feng Wu vaguely sensed something was wrong. “What happened?”
“People from the Third Legion found traces of the insectoids near the Ette Boulder Zone,” Mo Dexin said, getting straight to the point.
Xiong Yingjun’s expression changed. “The insectoids? Didn’t they quiet down years ago? Why are they suddenly—”
“Corpses,” Mo Dexin said.
Feng Wu repeated, “They found insectoid corpses near the Ette Boulder Zone?”
“Yes,” Mo Dexin said. “As soon as the corpses were discovered, the Second Legion seized them. Our people only got one distant look.”
“Did anyone get photos?”
“Yes.” Mo Dexin pulled them up. “The others are too blurry. Only this one is fairly clear.”
The photo enlarged on the screen, and a grotesque insectoid corpse suddenly filled their vision. As if worried the little cub might be frightened, Feng Wu lifted one hand to shield it slightly—but the little cub immediately??ed it away with a tentacle.
It was only an insectoid corpse. He had seen far too many of them already to be scared at all, Lin An’an thought.
But the insectoid in this photo seemed… a little strange.
Before Lin An’an could say what exactly looked strange, Mo Dexin spoke first. “The people who discovered the insectoid were silenced. But someone within the Third Legion said there were signs of modifications on that insectoid corpse.”
Feng Wu’s brows immediately drew together.
Looking upward at the image was tiring for Lin An’an, so he climbed a little farther up along Feng Wu’s arm.
On the insectoid corpse in the photo, several of the limbs did indeed reflect light differently from the others. They were probably made from some kind of metal.
The color of those false limbs was too similar to the insectoid’s original body color, so at first Lin An’an had only vaguely felt that something was odd without immediately spotting the problem.
The little cub leaned in closer, and all at once, Zhuang Yi’s figure flashed through his mind.
In order to make the photo clearer, it had clearly gone through some post-processing. But for some reason, the impression those artificial limbs gave Lin An’an… was a little similar to Zhuang Yi’s prosthetic.
Si Youlin frowned. “Human experimentation?”
“That’s way too twisted…” Xiong Yingjun muttered. “Who the hell would do this kind of experiment on insectoids?”
There was a long and bitter history of enmity between the people of the Milky Way galaxy and the insectoids. Under ordinary circumstances, if anyone encountered insectoids, the very first reaction was to wipe them out completely.
Lin An’an also thought it was strange.
Feng Wu repeated once more, “The Ette Boulder Zone?”
Mo Dexin nodded. “Yes. Right near the Boulder Zone. If the corpses had drifted just a little closer, they would have been sucked into the Boulder Zone itself, and the Third Legion would never have found them.”
“How could insectoid corpses even end up there?” Si Youlin also sensed something was off. “The insectoids may not have brains, but they have an instinctive sense for danger. A place where nothing goes in and comes back out… why would they ever go there?”
They wouldn’t go there on their own. The only explanation was that someone had thrown them there.
Feng Wu’s brows furrowed even more tightly. “There’s a rumor that if you can cross the Ette Boulder Zone, what lies on the other side is another star system.”
Mo Dexin immediately recalled the relevant information. “You mean… the X Star System?”
Si Youlin said, “You suspect this was done by people from the X Star System?”
Feng Wu nodded.
Xiong Yingjun looked shocked and confused. “But didn’t they say the X Star System doesn’t exist?”
The Boulder Zone was filled with dangers, and from ancient times until now, there had never been a single recorded case of someone crossing it and successfully returning alive.
Whether or not there really was another star system beyond the Ette Boulder Zone had therefore remained an unsolved mystery.
But that was only the public version of the story.
The three of them all gave Xiong Yingjun the same look and decided not to bother arguing with this “silly innocent darling.”
After thinking for a moment, Feng Wu said, “I suspect… the spread of Alpha is also connected to people from the X Star System.”
