Chapter 27
The spot Yanyan had bitten burned hot, making Si Jingce even more unsettled.
He frowned. “Who taught you to bite people like that?”
“Don’t change the subject!” Yanyan held his face, staring straight at him as if trying to see through him.
The man’s breathing inevitably grew uneven.
After a while, the boy seemed to discover something interesting and couldn’t help but laugh. “You really haven’t been this close with anyone before!”
“You’ve never dressed anyone, and you’ve never shared a bed with someone.” Having uncovered this big secret, Yanyan felt quite proud and generously decided to forgive him for suddenly insisting on sleeping separately. “Don’t be shy, I don’t mind!”
Si Jingce: …
I mind.
He said, somewhat helplessly, “I just think we’re too close.”
“According to Hall’s four types of interpersonal distance, our relationship should be within personal distance. But right now, we’ve crossed into intimate distance.”
Yanyan’s expression grew more and more confused.
“Hugging, whispering,” Si Jingce explained briefly. “Those are things only couples do.”
Yanyan asked, “Then why did we stay like that all day, and you’re only saying this now?”
Si Jingce was momentarily speechless. The conversation had returned to square one.
Yanyan, now uninterested, let go of him. “Then where are you sleeping tonight?”
There was only one room and one bed in the house.
“The couch.” Si Jingce picked up a blanket.
The sofa was narrow—Yanyan didn’t believe he could actually sleep there.
But he watched as Si Jingce walked straight into the living room without looking back.
He left?
He really left?!
Not even a goodnight kiss!
Yanyan angrily turned off the light, flopped onto the bed, and wrapped himself tightly in the blanket.
Fine, don’t sleep with me then.
What’s the big deal!
I don’t care at all—I can sleep just fine by myself!
Two hours later, Yanyan climbed up from the bed in a sorry state.
He had just played a horror game earlier.
The ghost perspective had been easier to handle than the human one—you could only see bloody hands, not the full terrifying appearance.
But he was still scared.
He rubbed his damp eyes, wrapped himself in a blanket, and quietly got out of bed. Slowly, he made his way to the door and peeked through a crack.
Si Jingce was lying on the couch, seemingly already asleep.
No way—tonight, he had to squeeze in with brother no matter what.
Afraid of waking him, Yanyan moved carefully, soon reaching the side of the couch. He crouched down and studied Si Jingce.
A sharp nose bridge, clearly inheriting good genes from his parents—no matter how you looked at him, he never grew tiring.
There was a small mole on the right side of his neck and another on the tip of his nose. Yanyan used to love pecking at those spots.
He suddenly frowned slightly.
Sleeping so soundly—he didn’t even wake up.
The little bird felt a bit unbalanced.
Yanyan slowly stood up and spread out the blanket…
The moment Si Jingce opened his eyes, he saw a “blanket” dropping heavily onto him.
Instinctively, he reached out to catch it—
And ended up holding Yanyan.
“Why did you leave me alone in the room? Fine, separate rooms, whatever—but you didn’t even give me a goodnight kiss! Do you dislike me now that I’ve turned human? If I’d known, I would’ve run away the day I transformed and never come back…”
The boy crashed into his arms like a little cannonball, babbling nonstop. Si Jingce’s muddled thoughts gradually cleared. He glanced at the living room, then at the boy in his arms, and fell silent for a moment.
“You definitely dislike me now, think I’m noisy, think I’m annoying.” The more Yanyan spoke, the more aggrieved he sounded. “I’ll annoy you to death too—so you’ll remember me forever…”
“Yanyan.” Si Jingce’s voice was still hoarse as he called him.
“…You can walk now?”
The boy froze completely. All his words got stuck in his throat.
Crap—he forgot about his “can’t walk” persona!
Si Jingce’s mind raced.
There was no wheelchair nearby, and Yanyan was dressed—meaning he had walked here himself.
But even when holding onto the wall, he would stumble. There was no way Si Jingce could sleep so deeply that he wouldn’t hear a person fall…
Si Jingce gripped the boy’s shoulders. “…You’ve been lying to me these past few days?”
Suddenly, the weight in his arms vanished.
The boy disappeared.
Si Jingce rummaged through the pile of clothes for a while before finally finding Yanyan.
The caramel-colored pearl bird had curled into a ball, burying its head into the blanket. When it sensed the clothes covering it being lifted, it curled up even tighter.
Half annoyed, half amused, Si Jingce picked the little bird up.
Its claws hooked onto the blanket, dragging a small piece of fabric along.
Resistance was futile. Yanyan quickly let go, closed his eyes, and didn’t dare look at him.
But his inner thoughts were anything but quiet—
[Ahhh I’ve been found out!!]
[What do I do what do I do what do I do!]
[Now I can’t find excuses to make brother carry me anymore, waaa—]
Hearing the little “bullet comments” in his mind, Si Jingce rubbed the bird’s head and said in a low voice, “Turn back into a human.”
[I won’t! I’ll just play dead. Pretend I didn’t hear anything—nothing happened tonight!]
Very determined.
Si Jingce offered a condition the bird couldn’t refuse: “If you don’t turn back, you’ll sleep in your own nest tonight. If you turn back and explain properly, you might still get to sleep on the big bed.”
The bird secretly opened one eye to look at him, then quietly climbed down from his hand and burrowed into the blanket.
Yanyan quickly transformed back, suddenly appearing in Si Jingce’s arms, straddling him.
Si Jingce instinctively steadied him, his hand brushing against bare skin.
Smooth and soft like silk—almost slipping out of his grasp.
He steadied himself and simply said, “Explain.”
Explain why he had pretended not to be able to walk.
The boy’s eyes were slightly red, a mist of tears flickering within. “At first, I really didn’t lie. When I first turned human, I wasn’t used to it and couldn’t walk properly. Later…”
Later, when Si Jingce helped him take a few steps, he had accidentally fallen into his arms.
After tasting that once, he got hooked.
No need to walk himself, being pushed around in a wheelchair, being carried by Si Jingce—
Such a good experience.
And yet, after only pretending for one day, he was exposed.
“I didn’t expect you to have so many little tricks,” Si Jingce said.
His tone was calm, giving nothing away.
Yanyan got scared and immediately wrapped his legs around the man’s waist, hugging him tightly. “Are you going to punish me for lying to you?”
Si Jingce: …
“Get down first and put your clothes on.”
The boy was barely dressed, clinging to him without restraint.
“I won’t!” Yanyan held on even tighter. “Will you throw me away because of this? Will you stop wanting me?”
Si Jingce sighed helplessly. “If you’re afraid, then don’t lie again next time.”
He added quickly, “I won’t throw you away. At most, you won’t get any snacks for a week… Now can you put your clothes on?”
“No.” Yanyan whispered by his ear, “I’ll cling to you forever…”
At worst, he’d just act cute tomorrow and get snacks again.
Hearing all of Yanyan’s thoughts, Si Jingce said, “…I’m not just saying it this time. I mean it.”
Yanyan: QAQ
Si Jingce: …
When it came to this boy, he was completely at a loss.
Just as Yanyan said, Si Jingce had indeed never been this close to anyone before.
But Yanyan had always been a clingy little pearl bird. Even before turning human, he liked sticking to him; now that he had a human form, he practically wanted to stay glued to Si Jingce every moment.
Si Jingce wasn’t used to it, yet he couldn’t bring himself to correct Yanyan’s behavior.
“In the future, you can’t treat other people like this. Don’t climb onto other people’s beds, and don’t casually hug or kiss others,” Si Jingce said.
Yanyan glanced at him. “But I only act like this with you. I’m not that kind of casual bird!”
Si Jingce: ?
“A bird’s mating method is stepping on the back. You like touching my back, and it feels comfortable to me,” Yanyan said indignantly. “You already count as half my partner. How could I possibly be unfaithful to you?”
Si Jingce froze for a moment and withdrew the hand that had been resting on Yanyan’s back.
Losing support, the boy swayed and nearly fell backward. Si Jingce quickly wrapped an arm around his waist, stopping his head from hitting the table.
Still shaken, Yanyan clutched his clothes again.
“You don’t even want to be my partner,” Yanyan pouted. “I know—there’s a barrier between humans and birds. It’s normal if you don’t want to.”
“I didn’t mean it like that,” Si Jingce hurriedly said. “I didn’t know that touching your back… meant that.”
His scalp tingled. Didn’t that mean he had unknowingly… done that to Yanyan?
“Fine.” Yanyan accepted his apology. “I’ll reluctantly forgive you. But you have to compensate me.”
Si Jingce felt like he’d been led into a trap. “What kind of compensation?”
“No more sleeping in separate rooms!” Yanyan immediately stated. “Every night you have to give me a goodnight kiss, and sometimes you have to hug me!”
Si Jingce fell silent.
Seeing him not respond again, Yanyan opened his mouth and shouted, “You bullied me—you stepped on my back and won’t take responsibility!!”
“Alright,” Si Jingce quickly agreed.
His plan succeeded, and the boy couldn’t help but smile while lying in his arms.
After a while, he tilted his head up to look at him. “Then what about today’s goodnight kiss?”
Si Jingce lightly pressed a kiss onto his eyelashes.
“Mhm, that’s how it should be.” Yanyan hugged him. “Then can we go back to the room and sleep now?”
Though he said that, he made no move to get off Si Jingce.
Si Jingce sighed. He really had no way to deal with him.
He wrapped the boy up in the blanket and placed him on the bed.
Because of the momentum, Si Jingce inevitably leaned over him. He propped himself up, showing no intention of getting onto the bed.
“Where are you going?” Yanyan quickly hooked an arm around his waist.
“…To shower.”
Yanyan: ?
Didn’t he just shower?
…
For now, the human-and-bird “adjustment period” was somewhat settled.
But Gui Yaying kept urging Si Jingce to come home.
At first, he could pretend not to respond, but eventually the pressure became too much. He posted a leave notice on Weibo and took Yanyan back with him.
The boy had the scarf Si Jingce had knitted for him wrapped around his neck. The tip of his nose was red from the cold. Only after the car heater turned on did the chill that had seeped into his bones gradually fade.
“When we get there, you must be careful,” Si Jingce reminded him. “Do you remember what I told you?”
Yanyan nodded vigorously. “Mm! Don’t casually expose that I’m a bird who turned human.”
He remembered it very clearly.
Si Jingce slowly started the car. “When we get there, my parents might chat with you. Be careful with what you say—don’t accidentally let something slip.”
Yanyan thought for a moment. “But Mom doesn’t seem like that kind of person.”
She had bought him snacks, secretly given him little gold bars, and even invited a doctor to treat him.
“You were a bird then. Now you’re human.”
Gui Yaying’s concerns weren’t baseless. When Si Jingce was in elementary school, something had happened.
His father’s business rival had found a child around his age and deliberately had him approach Si Jingce. After getting close, they tried to lure him out.
Kidnapping, threats—using him to force the Si family to concede in a business deal.
Fortunately, the housekeeper noticed something was wrong in time. Otherwise, Si Jingce would have been in serious danger.
After that incident, Gui Yaying became stricter with him.
Anyone who appeared around him would be thoroughly investigated. A few years ago, Si Jingce couldn’t take it anymore and moved out to live on his own. Only then did things ease up.
After hearing this, Yanyan let out a soft “ah.” “Those people are awful… why would they use a child like that?”
He tilted his head and looked at Si Jingce for a long moment. “Then what about Dad? What kind of person is he?”
Si Jingce’s father was named Si De.
“When we get there, just ignore him,” Si Jingce let out a short laugh. “He’s an old-fashioned type.”
Yanyan didn’t understand.
So Si Jingce explained, “He thinks my job doesn’t match my major—says I shouldn’t have become a streamer.”
“What did you study in university?”
“Geophysics.”
Yanyan: …
The little bird didn’t quite understand, but even he felt like that was quite a leap.
“And one more thing.” Si Jingce paused. “Don’t run around when we get there. Stay by my side.”
“I’ve already asked the housekeeper to keep the two orange cats upstairs, but I can’t guarantee they won’t sneak out.”
Yanyan’s eyes widened.
“They’re quite naughty. If they notice someone is afraid of them, they’ll keep following that person, because cats find it fun to scare people,” Si Jingce reminded him. “If you don’t want to be targeted by the two cats, stay by my side. Staying near others works too—just don’t wander off alone.”
Yanyan immediately behaved.
As they spoke, Si Jingce’s car had already driven into the villa district.
At the entrance, he tossed the keys to someone who came forward to receive them, asking them to park the car in the garage, while he brought Yanyan inside.
Looking at the vast garden, Yanyan couldn’t help but click his tongue in amazement.
Before, he had thought the new bird nest Si Jingce bought for him was already luxurious. Later, he felt that even Si Jingce’s “nest” was the biggest he had ever seen.
He hadn’t expected something even bigger.
At moments like this, Yanyan inevitably felt a little nervous. He quietly grabbed onto Si Jingce’s sleeve and followed behind him.
The housekeeper, dressed impeccably with a straight posture, stood at the entrance to greet them, offering a slight smile.
“Young Master, Madam and Sir are waiting in the reception room.”
Seeing the housekeeper, Yanyan subconsciously straightened his own back as well.
Noticing the tension beside him, Si Jingce took his hand and followed the housekeeper to the conservatory.
Gui Yaying liked to receive guests in this glass flower room. From afar, two figures could already be seen inside.
The housekeeper stopped at the door, opened it, and stepped aside slightly. “Please, both of you.”
Yanyan paused for a moment in front of him. Thinking that he should be polite in Si Jingce’s home, he softly said, “Thank you.”
The housekeeper was taken aback, and the smile on his face became a little more genuine.
As soon as Si Jingce and Yanyan entered, Gui Yaying asked them to sit.
Yanyan carefully observed her. Seeing that she looked just the same as before, he finally relaxed.
His gaze then shifted to the man beside her.
Time had left some wrinkles on his face, but his eyes remained sharp. For some reason, Yanyan felt as if he had been seen through completely…
This must be brother’s father.
“Mom,” Si Jingce greeted, but did not address the man beside her.
Si De snorted coldly. “So you still remember how to come back.”
Gui Yaying smiled. “Was the drive tiring? Was the journey hard?”
Si Jingce: “It was fine.”
Si De: “Do you not see me as your father anymore?!”
Gui Yaying: “What would you like for lunch? I’ll have the auntie prepare it.”
Si Jingce: “Anything is fine.”
Si De slapped the table. “You haven’t called once all this time! If you want to cut ties, just say it—no need to anger me like this!”
Gui Yaying still smiled gently. “Dr. Chen will come later. Remember to thank him in person.”
Si Jingce: “Alright.”
Completely ignored, Si De’s face darkened, and he fell silent.
Yanyan watched from the side, stunned.
Si Jingce suddenly patted his waist, signaling him to step forward, and introduced, “This is Yanyan.”
Gui Yaying’s gaze fell on their clasped hands, her expression unchanged.
Beside her, Si De’s face grew even gloomier.
“Yanyan,” Si Jingce said to the boy, “greet them.”
Yanyan looked conflicted.
After seeing how they interacted just now, he wasn’t quite sure what to do.
Brother and his father were arguing—so should he still call him “Dad”?
In front of them, Yanyan felt too embarrassed to directly ask Si Jingce.
So he brightly said:
“Hello, Mom. Hello, Dad. I’m Yanyan.”
That single “Mom and Dad” plunged the conservatory into an indescribable silence.
Si Jingce: …
Before coming, he had carefully taught Yanyan many things—except how to address Gui Yaying and Si De.
Gui Yaying blinked lightly. “It’s alright, don’t be nervous. Just call us uncle and auntie.”
Yanyan followed along, “Hello, Uncle. Hello, Auntie.”
Gui Yaying responded, and even Si De gave a rare nod.
Though still awkward, the atmosphere in the conservatory improved considerably.
Gui Yaying poured Yanyan a cup of tea. “Come, try the chrysanthemum tea I just brewed.”
The tea was sweet and pleasant, and Yanyan liked it.
Still, he felt a little out of place.
Before, “Mom” would call him “baby” in a soft voice and rub his little bird head.
Was it because he had turned into a human?
Yanyan finished the chrysanthemum tea in his cup in one go.
Gui Yaying refilled it for him and casually struck up a conversation, “I remember Si Jingce kept a little pearl bird named Yanyan. I didn’t expect you to be called Yanyan too.”
Si Jingce: “Just a coincidence.”
At the same time, Yanyan said, “Mm, because my name is Yanyan, so the bird is also called Yanyan.”
Si Jingce opened his mouth.
…Forget it.
Gui Yaying clearly misunderstood. “You two must be very close. Otherwise, Si Jingce wouldn’t name his beloved bird after you.”
“I heard you also have the surname Si. Are your parents locals too?”
Yanyan thought about it.
Locals… probably local birds.
He nodded.
“What a coincidence then,” Gui Yaying said. “Where do your parents work? Do you still live with them? Maybe we know each other.”
Yanyan froze for a moment.
His former owner had changed jobs and was no longer staying here, so they sold off a large number of pearl birds—and abandoned many as well.
His parents were relatively lucky, taken in by a girl who loved birds, but they lost contact because of it.
“I don’t live with my parents,” Yanyan shook his head. His expression was sincere, without a hint of falsehood. “We got separated. Brother took me in.”
But it didn’t matter—living with brother made him very happy, hehe!
Si Jingce: …
The misunderstanding was about to deepen again.
Across from them, a trace of guilt flashed across Gui Yaying’s face. She pushed the pastries on the table toward Yanyan. “I’m sorry, Auntie didn’t know your family had gone through something like that. I accidentally touched on something painful.”
He didn’t look very old, like he hadn’t even finished school yet. How could his life be so hard?
Gui Yaying’s attitude softened noticeably.
Si De also spoke up from the side, “Why don’t you tell Uncle your parents’ names? We might be able to help you find them.”
Yanyan looked blank. “I don’t really remember.”
Poor child.
Gui Yaying immediately lost all intention of questioning further. Looking at Yanyan, everything about him made her feel uneasy.
Too thin—painfully so.
“Don’t restrain yourself living with Si Jingce. If there’s anything you want to eat, just tell him,” Gui Yaying sighed. “If you don’t mind, you can also call me Mom.”
Yanyan: ?
Why could he call her Mom again?
“Si Jingce didn’t tell us what you like to eat, and we didn’t prepare much food here,” Gui Yaying asked. “You must be hungry after the trip. Shall we go to the kitchen and see what’s available? We can have the aunt cook something for you.”
As soon as she said that, Si Jingce, listening from the side, quietly let out a breath.
Gui Yaying’s side was more or less handled.
His mother couldn’t stand seeing anything in the house looking too thin—cats, birds, including Yanyan—there had to be some flesh on their cheeks.
Probably because Yanyan answered every question seriously and didn’t seem to be faking anything, he had passed this round of questioning.
Si Jingce stood up, intending to go out with Yanyan.
But as Gui Yaying passed by him, she gently pressed down on his shoulder.
“You stay,” she said softly. “I mainly asked you to come back so you could talk properly with your father.”
Si Jingce glanced at Yanyan, who was already fully focused on the thought of food. With no choice, he sat back down.
It had been years since father and son had sat face-to-face like this.
After Gui Yaying and Yanyan left, the atmosphere dropped to freezing point.
Si Jingce reached for the teapot to pour himself another cup of chrysanthemum tea, but a hand suddenly intercepted and snatched it away.
Without ceremony, Si De poured the remaining tea into his own cup and snorted again at Si Jingce.
Then he pushed a check across the table.
Si Jingce glanced at the amount written on it, and his expression darkened.
Given his and Yanyan’s behavior, it was inevitable for others to misunderstand. Si De already disliked him being a streamer—he would dislike even more the idea of him being with a man.
“Whatever misunderstanding you have, let me make this clear first—I’m not in that kind of relationship with Yanyan,” Si Jingce said. “Secondly, even if you gave me all your assets…”
“I still wouldn’t separate from Yanyan.”
Yanyan had no one to rely on, and just days ago, he had promised the boy… that he wouldn’t abandon him.
A person shouldn’t go back on their word. He didn’t want to, wouldn’t, and couldn’t leave Yanyan.
Si De’s hand trembled, nearly spilling the tea in his cup onto the table.
He frowned at his son, confused. “What are you talking about?”
Si Jingce: ?
Then Si De grabbed the check and flung it at his face.
“Look at the amount on it! Isn’t this more than you earn from streaming?! Drop those thoughts of yours and get back on the proper path.”
“Shut down that useless livestream of yours immediately! Get back to the company and work!”
…Oh. So it wasn’t about separating him from Yanyan.
Si Jingce neatly put away the check. “I won’t shut down the stream, and I won’t go back to the company. Do whatever you want—I’m not changing.”
