Chapter 9
When Ye Yumeng returned, he found the sanatorium under lockdown.
The entire compound was lit as bright as day, leaving nowhere to hide. The number of patrol robots and guards had multiplied several times compared to when he left.
After a strict inspection, he was finally allowed back inside.
Even as he walked toward the dormitory, a robot followed him, only leaving after confirming he had entered the building.
Ye Yumeng knocked on Gan Xiaoyang’s door to deliver the barbecue.
“Yezi, you’re finally back!”
“What happened? Why is everything suddenly under lockdown?” Ye Yumeng asked curiously.
“Not sure. Probably some big shot ran into trouble.”
Ye Yumeng froze for a moment. He pressed his lips together, had Gan Xiaoyang transfer the money for the late-night snack, then returned to his room in a daze.
That “big shot”… could it be Lu Qi?
He stood at the door for a long time before taking off his coat and pulling out the cap from his pocket.
He stared at it for a while, then tossed it into the drawer, deciding he wouldn’t wear a hat again.
“Woof woof—”
The mechanical dog came over, wagging its tail.
Ye Yumeng crouched down and patted its head.
“Wugang, will you die too?”
“Master, mechanical dogs do not have life, so Wugang will not die.”
Ye Yumeng didn’t like that answer, but he still gently patted it.
“We agreed—you won’t die.”
Wugang tilted its head, seemingly unable to understand.
“Master, Wugang will not die.”
Ye Yumeng smiled faintly. “Go recharge.”
“Yes, Master.”
After washing up and steadying his emotions, Ye Yumeng returned to his desk. But after picking up the light-brain glasses, he put them down again.
He sat cross-legged on the bed, closed his eyes, and resumed his cultivation, which he had neglected for days.
Medical cultivation was the foundation of his survival. He needed to return to his former level as soon as possible to save more people.
—
The next day was the assessment.
Coming out of the dormitory, Ye Yumeng noticed the sanatorium was still under lockdown—if anything, even more tense than the night before.
Had that “important figure” not died yet? Could it be Lu Qi?
With that faint hope, he followed the others to gather in District One.
It was the first time all six caregivers from Xihe Federation had gathered again since arriving.
Aside from Ye Yumeng, the other five all had dark circles, pale complexions, and obvious fatigue—especially Gao Hui’s group.
Seeing Ye Yumeng looking refreshed and radiant, the three of them visibly cracked.
“Did you cheat?” Gao Hui pointed at him angrily.
Ye Yumeng looked at him in confusion.
“The assessment hasn’t even started.”
Even if he wanted to accuse him, shouldn’t it wait until after the results?
“I’m talking about your study time ranking! How could you possibly have over ten hours of effective study every day?”
“You must have used some shady method!”
Gao Hui’s own limit was ten hours—beyond that, he’d feel dizzy and nauseous.
“Exactly,” Miao Kerui added. “I checked—this device recommends no more than six hours a day, with a maximum of ten.”
Exceeding that would cause severe side effects.
Yet Ye Yumeng had consistently logged fourteen hours for four days, and even eleven yesterday.
It was clearly abnormal.
“No need to argue with him,” Feng Yuheng said impatiently. “Something this obvious—nurse supervisors will notice.”
“Don’t cause trouble. They don’t like troublemakers.”
Gao Hui snorted but didn’t press further.
Ye Yumeng glanced at Gan Xiaoyang and Mo Jingyun—both looked confused, clearly unaware of these limits.
He recalled the strange mental force he sensed on the first day—something the others hadn’t noticed either.
A faint worry crept in.
Had he accidentally exposed something? Would it affect his assessment?
As he pondered, the head nurse entered, scanning the group before lingering on him.
But she said nothing, only: “Follow me.”
Ye Yumeng pressed his lips and quietly followed.
—
Top floor, Royal Sanatorium core ward.
Heart-wrenching cries woke Lu Nanzhou from sleep.
He realized it was a dream, though the sorrow lingered.
“Your Majesty, you’re awake?”
His slight movement alerted Mo Yin.
Fatigue and pain dulled his reactions. After a moment, he gathered his mental strength to survey the room.
What was once effortless now felt exhausting.
Using the machine interface, he spoke: “Where is Lei Qi?”
“Director Lei escorted the senior doctors to rest,” Mo Yin replied.
They had worked through the night after his critical condition.
“His Highness the Prince…” Mo Yin hesitated. “He was furious—he told Director Lei that if you couldn’t be saved, everyone would be buried with you.”
Silence filled the room.
After a while, the mechanical voice replied: “He won’t.”
Even if he died, his brother wouldn’t actually harm them.
But if such threats worked, he wouldn’t have been lying here for over a year without improvement.
Though emotionless, Mo Yin sensed something—
His Majesty seemed to have lost the will to live.
“Your Majesty!”
Mo Yin steadied himself. “Please take care.”
But the voice replied calmly:
“Mo Yin… help me draft my will.”
Mo Yin froze.
“It has come… to this point…”
“I bequeath the throne… to my brother, Lu Yuanqing.”
Mo Yin struggled. “His Highness has said he is not capable.”
Lu Yuanqing lacked strength in a world that valued power.
“If necessary… withdraw all military forces… to the capital system… and wait for a chance to rise again.”
This was the best way to preserve peace.
“Mo Yin, assist him.”
After a long silence, Mo Yin choked out, “Yes, Your Majesty.”
The room fell quiet again.
Then—
“Are Guangye and the others… alive?”
Mo Yin nodded.
“They’re stable.”
After the final battle, though all thirteen survived, they had regressed into juvenile forms.
Only Lu Nanzhou remained in critical condition.
“Mo Yin… remove these tubes.”
Mo Yin was stunned.
“What?”
“I want to see them.”
Before death, one last meeting.
A farewell—and a final entrustment.
None of the families behind these warriors under his command are simple…
