Chapter 35
To be honest, Lei Qi was a little shaken.
Was this really still the emperor who had tormented him for nearly two years?
Meanwhile, Ye Yumeng cast the Rejuvenation Technique once more.
As the little rabbit’s breathing gradually became smooth and even again, he let out a slight sigh of relief and carefully stepped back.
By this point, once Lei Qi had recovered from the shock, he had already gone to pull up the monitoring data.
This was truly a miracle!
The emperor, whom they had determined was still unable to eat normally, had consumed nearly one hundred milliliters of rice porridge, and yet his physical data showed absolutely no problems.
In fact, some of the values had even risen slightly.
Ye Yumeng did not understand those numbers, but with Lei Qi right there beside him, he naturally asked.
Lei Qi: “…”
As he explained, he realized that Ye Yumeng truly did not even understand the most basic values and concepts.
Then, thinking about how this same person had become His Majesty’s attending physician—and really did have the ability to preserve His Majesty’s life, even allowing him to eat normally—Lei Qi could not help questioning life itself.
Once Ye Yumeng had roughly clarified the data, it was also time for shift handover, so he tidied up and prepared to get off work.
Seeing that he was about to leave the ward, Lei Qi quickly asked, “Doctor Ye, that thing you just used… is that also a form of medical art?” Without noticing it, he had already begun using honorifics.
“Yes.”
Ye Yumeng nodded. “This kind of medical art can help the patient digest food and strengthen the stomach and intestines’ ability to process it.”
After thinking for a moment, he added, “You can call it the Digestion-Boosting, Fluid-Generating Art.”
“Digestion-Boosting, Fluid-Generating Art?”
Judging by the name, one could more or less understand what the medical art was meant to do, but…
How could waving around those strange hand signs a few times and placing one’s hand on the patient produce such an effect?
Sadly, Ye Yumeng had no intention of answering his questions.
He packed the remaining spiritual rice porridge into a lunchbox, stuffed it together with a few tufts of fur into his backpack, then waved goodbye to Lei Qi and Mo Yin.
“If anything happens to the little rabbit, contact me at once.”
Watching as Ye Yumeng left and the metal door slid shut behind him, a sudden flash of inspiration struck Lei Qi.
He thought he had just figured out how to write Ye Yumeng’s special recruitment justification!
Ye Yumeng left the Core Inpatient Department.
He had just called over a hovercar and was about to get in when he turned back and saw He Jun following him down, seemingly intending to get in as well.
“You…”
Ye Yumeng thought for a moment, then swallowed the rest of his words and let He Jun get in too.
However, the hovercar did not head straight back to the dormitory. Instead, it drove toward the sanatorium gates. Ye Yumeng had originally assumed he would be allowed through simply by showing his ID badge, but unexpectedly, the guard told him to wait a moment.
At that moment, his communicator rang.
Ye Yumeng accepted the call. “Ah Mo?”
“Doctor Ye, are you leaving the sanatorium?” Mo Yin’s voice came through.
“Yes, I need to go out for something.” Ye Yumeng nodded, then asked in a low voice, “Am I not allowed to leave yet?”
“You may. About how long will you be gone?”
“I should be back before dark.”
Mo Yin nodded. “Because we’re currently under lockdown, entry and exit control is fairly strict… Is He Jun with you?”
“Yes.”
“Good. The guards have already completed the registration. You’ll need to come back together later as well.”
Ye Yumeng had also heard that the Royal Sanatorium was under lockdown not because some important figure was critically ill, but because several grandmasters of medicine were here for a symposium.
He had not expected it to still be this strict! The sanatorium was really putting serious effort into protecting those grandmasters.
Faced with Mo Yin’s instructions, Ye Yumeng quickly nodded. “Alright, I understand.”
So after the call ended, the guards finally let him pass.
Meanwhile, after ending the call, Mo Yin also let out a sigh of relief.
Fortunately, when he had opened all access permissions for Doctor Ye, he had also casually raised his security clearance to the same level as the grandmasters of medicine.
Although that would not show on his physical ID badge, as long as the smartbrain scanned it, corresponding arrangements would automatically be made according to his security level.
And on Mo Yin’s end, he would also receive a real-time alert.
Besides He Jun, who was visibly serving as Ye Yumeng’s guard, there was also a six-man squad stationed in the shadows providing remote support.
Their movements were all currently displayed in real time on Mo Yin’s smartbrain.
It might seem overly cautious, but when it concerned His Majesty’s life and the future of the Yaojin Empire, Mo Yin felt that no amount of caution was too much.
Looking at the young beast lying on the hospital bed, and recalling the earlier feeding scene, he was still considering whether he ought to report it to the prince when his smartbrain rang.
It was an unfamiliar number.
Mo Yin frowned, cautiously stepped into a corner, and only then accepted the call.
A young man with curly brown hair and golden-orange eyes appeared on the light screen.
It was none other than Yan Xinglan, the grandson of Yan Jin, the former lion-clan leader—and the next leader of the lion clan.
“Mo Yin.”
Yan Xinglan spoke in a low voice. His expression was gloomy, and there were heavy dark circles beneath his eyes. It was obvious he was in poor shape.
Mo Yin had heard that Yan Xinglan had been raised by his grandfather and was very close to him.
So the fact that Yan Xinglan would make this call did not surprise him in the least.
“Mm, Young Master Yan.”
Mo Yin had met him a few times before, but since the two were responsible for different war zones, they had not had much contact.
Yan Xinglan had no intention of exchanging pleasantries and went straight to the point. “My aunt already told me everything.”
According to the smartbrain’s calculations, his grandfather should have passed away last night. Yet his grandfather had held on until now, exactly as Doctor Ye had told his aunt.
“Right now, on Medical Planet, he’s the only one who can save my grandfather.”
Mo Yin frowned slightly and corrected him. “Doctor Ye can only try to prolong his life. He may not be able to save him.”
“That’s enough!”
Yan Xinglan paused. His eyes gradually reddened. He stared at Mo Yin, lips pressed tightly together, his gaze filled with grief and inner conflict.
After a while, he finally said, “His Majesty is also on Medical Planet, isn’t he? That Doctor Ye… is treating His Majesty?”
Mo Yin said nothing, which counted as silent confirmation.
After all, denying it would be meaningless. At a time like this, what else aside from His Majesty could possibly bring Mo Yin to Medical Planet?
And his personal escort of Doctor Ye to the East District hospital had been conspicuous enough. Anyone in the know could guess.
That had indeed been his oversight. Fortunately, the information lockdown had been carried out in time, and Doctor Ye had worn a mask the entire time, so for now there was no need to worry about his identity being exposed.
Mo Yin quietly watched Yan Xinglan, waiting for what came next.
“His Majesty…”
Yan Xinglan clenched his teeth, then continued, “How is His Majesty doing? Can this Doctor Ye cure him?”
Mo Yin did not answer that question. Instead, he said, “The lion clan has been making rather a lot of moves recently.”
Yan Xinglan froze, then his face turned ugly. He was not uninformed, and he understood perfectly well that Mo Yin would not say something like this without reason.
He opened his mouth several times, only to close it again. At last, he said, “It’s because I failed to keep my own people under control. I will deal with those involved and give His Majesty an explanation.”
Not long ago, the lion clan had held an internal competition at the virtual beast arena.
Before the witnessing eyes of the entire clan, Yan Xinglan had come out on top with an overwhelming advantage, becoming the strongest of the lion clan’s younger generation.
Barring surprises, he would become the next leader of the lion clan.
Given the strength he had displayed so far, he could even challenge his father and take the clan leader’s seat directly.
If Yan Xinglan wanted to do something, no one in the lion clan could stop him.
Mo Yin nodded. That statement of intent was enough. However…
“As for Doctor Ye’s matter, I can’t make that decision,” he said. “If you want something, go ask His Highness the Prince.”
At this, Yan Xinglan’s face darkened further. He was silent for a moment before finally nodding. “Alright. I understand.”
The call ended there.
Inside the starship, Yan Xinglan stared at the now-dark smartbrain, his face shifting between light and shadow.
Standing beside him was a middle-aged man named Yan Hong, an adviser assigned to him by his father.
“You handled that very well just now. This was probably another probe and attempt to win us over from Lu Yuanqing,” Yan Hong analyzed.
Since that Doctor Ye was His Majesty’s attending physician, why else would he suddenly appear at East District Medical Hospital and just happen to enter the old clan leader’s room at such a moment?
Once one connected that with the imperial family’s current situation, the hidden message behind it was not hard to infer.
Yan Hong could not help feeling secretly pleased. Even the most exalted imperial family in the Empire had to resort to such methods to win over the lion clan now.
But when he lowered his eyes, he met Yan Xinglan’s cold stare.
His heart jumped. A mountain-like pressure came crashing down on him, and he instantly collapsed to the floor.
“Y-young… Young Master…”
“And you dare call Lu Yuanqing by name?” Yan Xinglan said coldly. “As long as His Majesty remains on the throne, he remains the prince of the Yaojin Empire. Show some respect.”
“I… I…” Yan Hong trembled all over. “I was disrespectful. P-please calm your anger, Young Master…”
Only then did Yan Xinglan withdraw the pressure. Then, in an equally hostile tone, he asked, “Do you know what Father and those old men have been doing recently?”
Yan Hong hesitated, then nodded. In a low voice, he tried to persuade him. “Young Master, those clan elders—”
“Clan elders who speak out of turn,” Yan Xinglan said, narrowing his eyes like an enraged lion, “are nothing more than old things waiting to be settled later.”
Yan Hong did not dare speak.
Yan Xinglan looked down at him coldly. “How many times have I said it? As long as His Majesty is still alive—as long as he still has even one breath left in him—all of you will stay in line.”
“And now it seems none of you took me seriously. Every one of you treated my words like the wind!”
He slammed a palm onto the table beside him. The metal tabletop caved in with a clear handprint.
Yan Hong, who had only just managed to get back up, went weak and collapsed again.
Yan Xinglan pressed his lips tightly together, furious beyond measure.
That bunch of old fools… once he got back this time, he would deal with every last one of them!
He ignored Yan Hong after that, rose to his feet, and walked to the window, gazing out into the endless deep void of space. In his mind rose the image of that stern and imposing figure.
Lu Nanzhou.
Yan Xinglan knew very well that this man was the spiritual leader of all high-level beast-blood warriors in the Yaojin Empire, and especially among the younger generation, a sacred presence that could not be profaned.
As long as he lived, the rule of the Yaojin imperial family remained as solid as a mountain.
That was not purely due to force.
It came from the prestige Lu Nanzhou had built since ascending the throne at fifteen, through campaign after campaign, leading the military legions to push back the zergs step by step, until at last he personally slew the insect queen and brought the war to a complete end.
That was not something one could earn through sheer martial strength alone.
Even if he was gravely wounded, even if he lay there unable to move, as long as he was Lu Nanzhou, then he was still their Emperor.
They were willing to bow their heads before him!
Lu Nanzhou had the hearts of the people. If the private maneuvers the lion clan had been carrying out were to leak…
Yan Xinglan did not even dare imagine whether the furious masses might tear the lion clan to pieces.
Those old fools really had water in their brains. His Majesty was not even dead yet, and they were already thinking of laying hands on imperial power?
Then he remembered Mo Yin’s final words, and a trace of irritation surfaced in his eyes.
Did he really have to go ask Lu Yuanqing?
They were about the same age, had grown up as rivals, and had plenty of clashes during their school years. They had even fought more than once—
Though of course, every time it had been Yan Xinglan who came out ahead.
And now he had to go ask him for help… Yan Xinglan’s face grew dark as the bottom of a pot.
The driverless hovercar moved along the road.
It was evening. The orange glow of sunset bathed the scenery beyond the window in a brilliant golden sheen.
But Ye Yumeng had no mind to admire the view. Sitting in his seat, he looked visibly tense.
Inside the enclosed car cabin, He Jun sat upright beside him.
Although He Jun had done nothing abnormal after boarding, being shut in a narrow space with a stranger—especially one who looked like he possessed considerable combat ability—still made Ye Yumeng instinctively nervous.
He turned his head and glanced at He Jun.
Sensing Ye Yumeng’s scrutiny, He Jun once again cast him that respectful, almost fervent gaze.
“Doctor Ye.”
Ye Yumeng quickly said, “I’m planning to make a trip to Lakeheart Park.”
“No problem. If there’s anything you need, just give the word!”
Once the conversation began, Ye Yumeng felt considerably more relaxed and smiled as he nodded.
Lakeheart Park was not far away, and the hovercar quickly arrived at the destination.
After getting out, Ye Yumeng followed the information he had found on the forum and entered a low hill beside Lakeheart Park.
The low hills rose gently under the soft light of evening. Sunset poured warmly over the little-used trail, and the damp scent of earth and vegetation came rushing toward him on the wind.
Ye Yumeng could not help taking a deep breath.
He had not come to such a natural environment in a long time, and to his surprise, he felt a faint sense of nostalgia.
Still… this should not be like the cultivation world, right? There should not be any evil cultivators lurking halfway through, ready to murder him and steal his treasures, should there?
At that thought, Ye Yumeng glanced back. Seeing He Jun following closely behind him in a state of constant vigilance, he felt much more at ease.
He walked forward along the trail.
The shadows beneath the trees grew deeper, and the wind rustled through the leaves.
Finally, at the end of the path, he found what he had come for—a spring flowing down from the mountain.
Ye Yumeng’s eyes lit up. Truly, the forums could do anything!
He went to the spring, scooped up a handful of water in both hands, studied it for a moment, then lowered his head and took a sip.
Excellent!
Though it was not spiritual spring water, it was clear and sweet, and it carried the breath of heaven and earth within it—exactly what he needed.
Ye Yumeng opened his backpack and took out a collapsible bottle.
He had just bought the bottle online that very morning, and before he had even gotten off work, a drone had already delivered it directly into his hands.
When folded, the bottle was only about the size of a fist. Once unfolded, it became a two-liter bottle.
Ye Yumeng submerged it in the spring and filled it with water, gurgling all the way up.
Once he tightened the cap, he took out a bag and dug up some damp soil from beside the spring pool.
“Doctor Ye, let me help.”
He Jun lifted the bottle in one hand and gathered the bag of soil in the other. “Do you need anything else?”
Ye Yumeng nodded. “Yes. I still want to look around in the woods.”
Since he had finally come out into the wild, of course he had to see whether there were any spiritual plants around. He might also dig up some herbs, or find materials that could come in handy at any moment.
“Understood.”
He Jun responded, tying the soil and bottle to his shoulder with rope before resuming his place beside Ye Yumeng, scanning the surroundings alertly.
Ye Yumeng headed into the woods, following his senses in search of spiritual plants.
The ecological environment here was good, but it was not truly wild forest. There were traces of human planting and upkeep, and not many animals were active.
Before long, he stopped beneath a tree.
He did not know what kind of tree it was, but its leaves were broad and remained lush and green even in this late autumn season.
From Ye Yumeng’s perspective, he could see faint motes of spiritual energy drifting from the tree, nurturing the nearby grasses and plants into growing more thickly and abundantly.
Since he did not recognize it, he took out his smartbrain, photographed it, and ran it through identification.
Only then did he learn that it was a longan tree.
Longan was an excellent thing. It could nourish the heart and spleen, enrich the blood, and calm the mind.
It was just that… would this longan tree really bear the same kind of fruit he knew? Ye Yumeng plucked a few leaves, preparing to take them back and study them.
Whether it was truly longan or not, as a spiritual plant alone it was already valuable.
As for the tree itself, he marked the location and planned to ask Mo Yin later whether it could be dug up and transplanted into the sanatorium.
By then, the sky had already grown dim.
Ye Yumeng was ready to head back. But He Jun, who had originally been watching the surroundings, suddenly reached toward his waist and lifted his head sharply toward the treetops.
Was there something up there?
“Chirp chirp—”
Ye Yumeng looked up and saw that, at some point, a small bird had flown into the dense leaves above.
It was just a fluffy little ball, round and puffed-up all over. Its white feathers had been dyed orange by the sunset glow, making it look like a piece of cotton candy blown by the wind and caught among the leaves.
But it was definitely a bird. When Ye Yumeng looked up at it, it gave a chirp and tilted its head curiously at him.
So cute!
Ye Yumeng could not help smiling. But very quickly, he realized why He Jun had become so tense.
That chubby little fluffball… could it be a patient who had escaped from the Royal Sanatorium?
He Jun aimed his communicator camera at the bird and reported quietly to the smartbrain, “A possibly escaped patient has been found. Please confirm location and patient information.”
“Scan complete.”
The mechanical voice of the smartbrain sounded:
“Patient confirmed as missing from the Royal Sanatorium Core Inpatient Department. Detailed information as follows—
Race: Featherfolk
Species: Silver-throated Long-tailed Tit
Name: Du Weiyu
Please recover as quickly as—”
“Chirp!”
A single birdcall rang out.
He Jun’s communicator emitted a sharp beep—and then went dead.
Ye Yumeng: 0.0
Did that little tit just break his communicator? Just by chirping once?
As a high-ranking beast-blood warrior, He Jun had plenty of experience, and naturally did not rely on only one communicator. But for the moment, he did not dare use another one either.
“Doctor Ye, leave first. Get to a safe place,” He Jun said in a low voice.
His teammates were all concealed in the shadows nearby, watching the situation. With them there, even if Ye Yumeng left his line of sight, it would be alright.
That little tit looked cute and harmless, but every patient in the Core Inpatient Department was not to be underestimated. The fact that his communicator had just been destroyed was proof enough.
Ye Yumeng did not insist.
He looked up at the bird and slowly stepped backward. But after only a few steps, he noticed—
“This bird seems to be trapped?”
Its thin little claws appeared to be entangled in a line of some kind, which was caught on a branch and preventing it from breaking free.
Apparently having decided the two people below were not a threat, the little tit began to flap and struggle.
It struggled with great force, pulling the branch into violent shaking.
Seeing the fine line starting to cut into the bark of the spiritual tree, Ye Yumeng felt a pang of distress. That was a spiritual tree!
And just then, He Jun quietly pulled out a tranquilizer gun and aimed it at the bird.
But the little tit was struggling too violently, and his shot would not necessarily be accurate. Usually, he would only get one chance.
Standing behind him, Ye Yumeng—taking advantage of He Jun’s inattention—pressed two fingers together and flicked out a tiny point of spiritual energy from his fingertips.
The struggling little tit suddenly froze for a fraction of a second in midair.
He Jun instantly seized the opening. The tranquilizer dart he fired was no larger than a sesame seed, yet it hit the little tit with perfect accuracy. Once inside its body, it dissolved rapidly.
The little tit chirped twice, then lost all strength and dropped from the air.
Ye Yumeng only felt a blur pass before his eyes.
He Jun had already dashed out, his agile body springing astonishingly high into the air. He caught the bird steadily and sliced through the line wrapped around it with a dagger.
The entire sequence flowed like water, clean and efficient. By the time Ye Yumeng reacted, He Jun had already landed again.
Then he removed his uniform coat and gently laid the little tit onto it.
Ye Yumeng could not help praising him. “Amazing skills!”
He Jun smiled shyly, then turned serious again and shook his head. “Doctor Ye, we should get back quickly.”
“Wait a moment first.”
Ye Yumeng walked over and used Aura Sight on the little tit. Its body was wrapped in blue-green and yellowish qi, indicating illness and malnourishment.
Black qi was also rising from its claws, clearly showing that the line had already cut into them and caused injury.
Ye Yumeng took out the portable kit he carried with him. There was a small pair of scissors inside. Carefully, he snipped the line wrapped around the little tit’s claws shorter.
“This looks like fishing line?” He Jun frowned, unsure how the thing had gotten tangled up in it.
Ye Yumeng collected the severed fishing line, then pointed up into the tree. “That part still left on the branch should be cleaned up too.”
“Oh—right.”
He Jun came to himself. Leaving fishing line out in the wild really was not a good thing. He handed the little tit over to Ye Yumeng along with the coat, then leapt back up into the tree.
By the time he came back down after clearing the fishing line away, Ye Yumeng had already cleaned the little tit’s wound, applied a little hemostatic medicine, and wrapped it with bandages.
At the same time, he had also cast Rejuvenation Technique on the little fluffball once.
After confirming there were no further problems, he said, “Alright, let’s head back.”
“Understood.”
They made their way back along the same trail they had come by. But when they reached the middle stretch, Ye Yumeng suddenly stopped and turned his head toward the woods beside the path.
Wei Jingfeng, one of the guard squad members, who was at that moment crouching in a clump of bushes, noticed that Ye Yumeng seemed to glance straight at him, and his whole body stiffened.
No way. Had he been spotted?
Was that even possible? Wasn’t Doctor Ye from the Xihe Federation and without mental power?
He also looked slender and gentle, without much combat ability. There was no way he could be this perceptive, right?
Fortunately, Ye Yumeng’s gaze quickly shifted away and landed instead on a weed growing by the roadside.
He handed the coat-wrapped little tit over to He Jun, then crouched down with his tools and carefully dug the weed up and packed it into his backpack.
The tension in Wei Jingfeng’s body instantly eased.
See? He had known it. With concealment skills as strong as his, how could a mere doctor have possibly seen through them?
Back in military school, his stealth ranking had always been number one in the class!
Yet just then, he watched the same Doctor Ye—who had just rescued a missing patient, and who looked like the very picture of innocence and kindness with not a trace of scheming about him—suddenly grab He Jun and start walking faster and faster.
He Jun did not understand what was happening, but still followed Ye Yumeng’s lead.
In the end, the two of them actually broke into a run along the trail and turned into two tiny dots in the blink of an eye.
“He Jun, run! Someone’s ambushing us!”
The guards were all still confused when He Jun’s recording came through clearly in their earpieces via his backup communicator.
The panicked tone fell into the channel—and silence followed.
Wei Jingfeng froze, then finally understood.
Damn it, he really had been found out!
And then Ye Yumeng’s flustered voice rang through the channel again.
“There are so many of them, all hiding in the woods! They must’ve been the ones who caught the little tit!”
“We can’t beat them. Run, run!”
The other guards, who had been just about to mock Wei Jingfeng: “…”
Holy hell—not just Wei Jingfeng, but all of them had been discovered? And worse, they’d been mistaken for bird traffickers?!
“So you were all sent by the little rabbit’s family to protect me?”
At the foot of the hill, Ye Yumeng stood beside a tree. In front of him, besides He Jun holding the little tit, were six uniformed men and women.
The moment they heard Ye Yumeng’s way of referring to His Majesty, every single one of them wore the same complicated expression, as if they wanted to say something but could not.
But when He Jun’s stern gaze swept over them, they all lowered their heads, looking thoroughly wilted and deeply ashamed.
“Yes,” He Jun nodded. “They’re all my teammates. They weren’t here to ambush us… Sorry for making you laugh.”
Hearing this, Wei Jingfeng and the others lowered their heads even further.
Just now, when He Jun had stopped Ye Yumeng to explain the misunderstanding, his teammates had started arguing angrily over the earpiece.
So he asked Ye Yumeng to point out the locations of all the “ambushers” he had seen.
And sure enough, all six members of the squad—without a single exception—had been identified by Ye Yumeng, then forced to crawl out of their hiding spots in thoroughly embarrassed condition.
At that point, no one had anything left to say.
He Jun looked at his teammates, wanting to laugh but not quite daring to. After all, his own stealth skills were not exactly top-tier either. If it had been him, he probably would have been spotted too, right?
So…
“Doctor Ye, how did you notice them? Is that one of your bloodline traits?” He Jun asked.
Ye Yumeng shook his head. “I’m from the Xihe Federation. I don’t have bloodline power. As for how I noticed…”
He scratched his cheek with a finger, sounding a little uncertain. “I just looked once… and saw them?”
Ye Yumeng had never expected the little rabbit’s family to take him this seriously. Not only had they sent him an assistant, they had even stationed hidden guards around him.
If he had known that earlier, he never would have caused such a misunderstanding.
“…”
Hearing his explanation, Wei Jingfeng and the others started doubting their lives. Were their stealth skills really that poor? Spotted at a glance?
“Do you really not have any special ability?” Wei Jingfeng asked unwillingly.
Ye Yumeng shook his head again.
Though he did have Aura Sight, he had not used it just now.
If he could not even see through this sort of disguise and ambush, then back in the cultivation world he would have died eight hundred times already.
He thought for a moment, then said, “Maybe it’s because you don’t spend much time moving around in the wild.”
“There are too many living things in the mountains and forests. As outsiders, you create a kind of rejection. You stand out from the environment.”
“If you were in animal form, maybe you’d blend in a little better.”
At that, Wei Jingfeng nodded thoughtfully, though some of the others still looked unconvinced.
They had gone through wilderness training too, after all. Since when had it become possible to spot them at a glance?
If that was not just exaggeration, then it had to mean this Doctor Ye possessed some kind of special ability.
In any case, no one dared underestimate Ye Yumeng any longer.
But then Ye Yumeng’s gaze landed on one specific member of the team, and he suddenly frowned. “Were you bitten by something?”
Le Fu froze and instinctively reached for his neck.
Seeing everyone looking at him, he quickly said, “I did get bitten once in the woods just now, but it shouldn’t be a big deal.”
Because he had been focused on surveillance, he had not paid much attention to it. If Ye Yumeng had not pointed it out, Le Fu would have already forgotten all about it.
But Ye Yumeng shook his head seriously. “You’d better go back to the sanatorium and get checked.”
“Doctor Ye, did you see something?”
“He’s been poisoned.”
Ye Yumeng’s words shocked them all.
Never mind Le Fu—even the other guards were stunned. “What? No way!”
“Le Fu, where were you bitten? Let me see!”
Le Fu himself did feel that the bite area itched and hurt a little, but surely it was not serious enough to count as poison?
He lowered his head to let his teammates check.
But there was only a small bump where he had been bitten. It did not look at all like signs of poisoning.
Ye Yumeng, however, remained solemn. A thread of spiritual energy gathered at two of his fingertips, and he quickly tapped several points on Le Fu’s body, sealing several of his acupoints.
“Hurry and take him back for examination,” he said. “Better safe than sorry.”
If someone got hurt because they were protecting him, he would feel terrible about it.
Even though Ye Yumeng still looked frail and slim, and even though his voice remained soft and gentle, all seven guards—including Le Fu—found themselves unconsciously obeying him.
Doctor Ye looked so professional!
What had all those quick little pokes just now been?
Though curious, Le Fu’s condition mattered more right now. After nodding in agreement, they acted at once.
So they called a hovercar and hurried back to the Royal Sanatorium.
By the time they got back, Le Fu’s condition had already become obviously abnormal. The moment he arrived, he was put onto a floating stretcher and taken away for examination and treatment.
Luckily, though they were assigned as Ye Yumeng’s guards, they were also officially registered within the Royal Sanatorium, so there was no concern about bed availability.
For an injury to happen on their very first mission—it really was inexcusable!
When they went back, they would probably have to write self-criticisms…
Ye Yumeng did not follow them.
He Jun stayed with him, carrying the little tit, and the two returned to the Core Inpatient Department, where doctors and nurses were already waiting anxiously at the entrance.
“Caregiver Ye!”
They hurried over. The moment they saw the little tit curled up in the coat, they all visibly relaxed.
“Thank goodness, Fat Chirp is back!”
The caregiver looked at Ye Yumeng with tears in his eyes, his gratitude impossible to hide. “It’s all thanks to you! I’m treating you to dinner another day!”
He had been on duty today, and Fat Chirp had insisted on going out for fresh air. Unable to refuse, he had taken him out.
Who could have guessed that the little rascal would take advantage of a moment’s inattention to open the birdcage door and secretly fly off? By the time he chased after him, Fat Chirp had already vanished without a trace.
They had been searching all day. Because the positioning chip had been damaged, they could only look for clues through the Royal Sanatorium’s surveillance network.
They had only just confirmed the direction when good news came in from the low hill beside Lakeheart Park.
Having made such a major mistake, this caregiver now looked at Ye Yumeng as though he were his savior reborn.
Though punishment was still unavoidable, at least Fat Chirp was safe, and that meant he would not be fired!
“Chirp chirp?”
Just as Ye Yumeng was about to say there was no need, a birdcall sounded.
Lowering his head, he saw that the little tit wrapped in the coat had actually woken up at this moment.
It shook its little head, clearly still somewhat dazed, then looked left and right in confusion.
Eh? How had it ended up here?
Even Ye Yumeng, who had no mental power, could tell what it was expressing.
At that moment, the little tit finally lifted its head.
Blinking its two black-bean-like eyes, it tilted its head and looked at the three humans above who were all staring at it.
“Chirp chirp—”
“Chirp chirp chirp—”
When it saw the familiar doctors and nurses, it let out several crisp calls again, as though greeting them.
But in the next instant, it flapped its wings, dodged the hands the staff reached out toward it, and flew up into the air.
“Fat Chirp!”
“Du Weiyu!”
Seeing that it was about to fly off again, they cried out in alarm. They were just about to use their mental power to restrain it when the next scene left them completely dumbfounded.
Ye Yumeng also extended a hand—and after the little tit flew in a circle through the air, it actually came back and landed on the black-haired young man’s palm.
“Chirp chirp! Chirp chirp chirp!”
Its cries were full of obvious confusion, but that quickly turned into joy, and it hopped lightly a couple of times on Ye Yumeng’s palm.
Then it tilted its head to look at its own little claws, probably tugging at the wound and making it hurt.
It opened and closed its claws several times, inspecting them with its head tilted. After a while, it finally settled down, shook out its feathers, and found a comfortable position in Ye Yumeng’s palm to nestle into.
