Chapter 183: Werewolf Game
Was it the light?
No.
Today was a clear day, hardly a cloud in the sky. The sunlight had been steady all along.
In the next carriage, a group of middle-aged women were singing boisterously: “My heart is racing, love burns like fire, you’re smiling, the crazy one is me…”
The train sped up again!
Mu Lantu’s heart tightened. He turned to Xu Huazhang.
They spoke at the same time: “The sound.”
That had to be it. The louder the noise in the train, the faster it went; the quieter it became, the more the speed dropped.
They found the other players and shared this discovery.
The players, who had been frustrated at finding nothing useful, were instantly overjoyed.
Now that they knew the cause, it was simple—just quiet the passengers down, and the train’s speed would fall; or better yet, have everyone remain completely silent, and the train would stop.
Zhao Yuanzhou said, “Let’s make it stop completely. Otherwise, if something else happens, we may not have time to react.”
Liang Jianming added, “There’s only half an hour left. Don’t hold back your items now. Three to five people can handle one carriage each—put the passengers into a good sleep.”
The others agreed and split up.
Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang were assigned Car No. 5. They used a Dream Blossom.
Passengers who inhaled its fragrance fell asleep and slipped into sweet dreams, not to wake for an hour.
[Congratulations, player. Task complete. You have earned 2 credits, 700 gold coins. You may remain in this world for another 10 minutes. Exit now? [Yes] [No]]
Mu Lantu exited the instance and returned to the classroom. Before he could speak to Xu Huazhang, 005’s urgent voice rang in his mind.
[Host, quick! I’ve opened Infinite University’s hidden gate! Hurry to the General Teaching Building, Room 444. Clear the next dungeon there, and you can leave Infinite University!]
“Huazhang, Room 444!” Mu Lantu grabbed Xu Huazhang and dashed out. “Song Bochao, if you want to take a gamble, hurry to 444!”
Song Bochao looked back, just in time to see the edge of Mu Lantu’s coat vanish through the door. His heart skipped, and he made a snap decision to sprint after him.
Other students had just returned from their own instances. Still dazed, they stared blankly as Song Bochao, Zhao Yuanzhou, and Fang Menglei all rushed out.
“What’s happening?”
“What’s going on?”
“I think I heard Mu Lantu mention Room 444 in the General Teaching Building?” one student said uncertainly.
Another yawned, weary, and asked carelessly, “What about 444?”
A girl spoke softly, “Mu Lantu said, if you trust him, go there right away.”
The absent-minded students sobered instantly.
Why 444 all of a sudden? None of their classes were held there. If Mu Lantu mentioned it out of the blue, there had to be a reason!
A few more students bolted for the door.
The ones left behind hesitated. Even if they went now, they told themselves, they wouldn’t make it in time. That excuse calmed their wavering nerves. Mu Lantu might be powerful, but that didn’t mean every choice he made was right.
Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang rode balance scooters toward the teaching building like a gust of wind sweeping across campus.
“Baby, check if you still have your leave slip.”
The leave slip was something they always prepared before entering an instance, to prevent being assigned to opposing factions.
Mu Lantu checked his game backpack. The leave slip was there, safe and sound.
“Mu Lantu, what’s going on? Is Room 444 special somehow?”
Song Bochao, Zhao Yuanzhou, and the others caught up, panting.
Mu Lantu wouldn’t tell them the truth. “I’m Level 2 now, so I can add friends. I just got word from a friend: if you clear the next dungeon in 444, there’s a high chance you can leave Infinite University. Whether it’s true, I don’t know—you’ll have to decide for yourselves.”
“What? We might be able to leave Infinite University?”
The group was stunned by the massive revelation. They froze for a moment, then quickly ran after Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang again.
“That’s great! Finally, we can leave!”
“Yes, I’ve had enough of this life!”
Those not close to Mu Lantu said nothing, running in silence. Deep down they didn’t believe it much—but even if there was only the slimmest chance, they had to try. What if it was real?
Room 444 was on the fourth floor. Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang dashed straight for the stairs. It was a habit formed by years of dungeon runs—they almost never took elevators to class.
Mu Lantu still had one nagging worry: what if Room 444 had limited capacity? If they arrived too late, there might not be seats, and they wouldn’t get into the dungeon.
Maybe he was overthinking, but at times like these, one could never be too careful.
Song Bochao and the others didn’t think so much; they just followed closely.
At the rear, two students—Yang Haoyu and Guo Xiangchen—saw the elevator doors opening just a few steps away. They cursed Mu Lantu as an “idiot” in their hearts, smirked smugly, and darted inside.
Inside Room 444, a few students were already seated. Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang instinctively took seats at the back row.
Xu Huazhang quietly observed the others’ expressions. “They don’t look like they know anything,” he whispered.
Mu Lantu nodded. The hidden gate had been opened by 005—these students likely knew nothing.
Song Bochao tried chatting them up. Since they didn’t have a schedule, they didn’t know the course name. They had to ask.
“They said the dungeon’s name is Longevity Village.”
Mu Lantu searched the forums—nothing came up.
That meant it was a brand-new dungeon.
“We’ll handle it as it comes,” Xu Huazhang laced his fingers with Mu Lantu’s.
Mu Lantu advised, “We shouldn’t sit together. If there are red and blue factions, we might be split into opposing sides.”
Everyone understood and spread out.
More students arrived, and the classroom filled up.
Meanwhile, in the elevator, Yang Haoyu and Guo Xiangchen stared in horror as the floor numbers flickered wildly.
The elevator passed the fourth floor without stopping—rocketing upward.
“What’s going on!” Guo Xiangchen yelled, trying to pry the doors open.
Yang Haoyu glanced anxiously at his watch. Only two minutes until class started. He regretted it bitterly. Why hadn’t he followed Mu Lantu up the stairs? Why insist on the elevator?
“It’s broken! What do we do now?”
Another student in the elevator rolled his eyes, face pale as a vampire. “Idiots. Infinite University elevators don’t break. We’ve triggered the Elevator Horror dungeon.”
Yang Haoyu refused to believe it. “Impossible! I’ve never heard of an instance starting outside class time!”
The student sneered. “Shows how ignorant you are.”
Guo Xiangchen paled. “Senior, can you explain?”
“It’s a senior project,” the older student muttered, unwilling to say more.
“Ding-a-ling-ling—”
The bell rang.
“It’s over…”
Yang Haoyu and Guo Xiangchen collapsed to the floor in despair.
Yang Haoyu slapped himself hard across the face.
Back in Room 444, the bell rang and Mu Lantu entered a dim gray space.
His watch projected a light screen:
[Mission: Win this round of Werewolf. Refuse, and you’ll return to Infinite University with no penalty or reward. If you do nothing for 30 seconds, acceptance will be assumed.]
Reward for Success: 4 credits, 444 gold coins
Punishment for Failure: Death
[Accept] [Decline]
Mu Lantu’s heart sank. Huazhang had never played Werewolf.
**Translator’s Warning!!**
The next 8 chapters are all about the players playing the Werewolf game. If you’ve never played it before—and don’t want to get brain-fried by shaky logic and messy translation—I recommend skipping ahead to Chapter 190. I did my best with the translation, but since I’ve never really played the game myself, I honestly couldn’t make sense of the logic either.
–
But he had no choice. He selected Accept and hoped Infinite University would provide instructions.
In the next instant, Mu Lantu found himself at a round table. On the table were twelve numbered plaques, from 1 to 12, each matching a seat.
He sat in seat No. 2. Only his own body was visible. The other eleven seats held nothing but dark shadows—no gender, no faces, no expressions, no gestures, not even voices.
To them, he also appeared as a dark silhouette.
Werewolf was a popular deduction game in the real world, played both face-to-face and online.
Mu Lantu had played it back in college, mostly face-to-face games. Back then, besides analyzing others’ speech, he could also read micro-expressions.
Here, with nothing visible, the difficulty was much higher.
Worse still, if his teammates were poor at logic or speech, they’d drag the whole side down.
Mu Lantu reassured himself: these were all university students. They couldn’t be that bad.
Then he thought of Xu Huazhang. Was Huazhang in the same game? If so, were they on the same side?
If they were, they had to find each other, team up, and carry the game even if their side was weak. If not, then either they’d have to use the leave slip to exit, or burn 10 credits to cancel one death. But if they did, they wouldn’t be able to leave Infinite University this time.
Mu Lantu silently prayed: please, let him and Xu Huazhang be on the same side.
He tried to speak, but his throat felt blocked.
The system had disabled all cheating methods.
Then the system’s voice spoke, and a giant screen like a movie theater appeared, showing an introduction to Werewolf.
Mu Lantu exhaled in relief. Good—he’d guessed right. At least there was a tutorial. Otherwise, for Huazhang, the difficulty would’ve been extreme.
“All players, attention. This round uses the 12-player Seer-Witch-Hunter-Idiot standard setup, with 6 roles in total: Seer, Witch, Hunter, Idiot, Villager, and Werewolf…”
