Chapter 167: Fearless
In the same neighborhood, across from them in a high-rise, by the window, a young man in a black tracksuit held binoculars, dumbfounded.
“Holy crap! Those two are actually in the Red faction!”
“Song Hansheng, what are you yelling about?” Li Ziqiang walked over irritably, snatched the binoculars, and frowned. “You mean those two with guns in their hands and swords at their waists? You know them?”
In that group, the pair’s aura stood out—clearly not ordinary.
Song Hansheng said warily, “I was in the Fear City dungeon with them. They were the very first of our batch of players to leave Fear City. You tell me—are they strong or not?”
The other four companions also came over to listen.
“That’s all?” Li Ziqiang patted the pistol at his waist, dismissive. They weren’t the only ones with guns—he had one too.
Song Hansheng grew serious. “Don’t underestimate them! Let me tell you something you’ve probably heard about. That very handsome young man in front? He might be the rumored son of Infinite University itself!”
At that, the five others’ expressions shifted subtly.
“And that man in gray combat gear,” Song continued, “his skills are insane—he can take out four people in under ten seconds! The two of them stick together like glue, a powerhouse combo. Absolutely not to be provoked.”
“Enough! Stop boosting their morale and crushing our own!” Li Ziqiang snapped. “So what if they’re strong? Are we supposed to give up our mission? If you want to be erased, I won’t say another word!”
Song Hansheng and the others fell silent, eyes firming. They didn’t want to die.
Li Ziqiang ordered, “They’re leaving. Time for us to head out too. Remember the plan.”
“Don’t worry, Brother Qiang. That grandfather and grandson don’t suspect a thing,” one player flattered.
Annoyed, Li Ziqiang ignored him. “Move out!”
*
Mu Lantu looked up at the tall building, then opened the driver’s door.
“Let’s go!”
The SUV roared off, with the van sticking tightly behind.
“Whoa! So much good food!” Deng Zhiqi shouted in delight, rummaging through everything. “Self-heating hotpots, instant noodles, beef jerky, canned food, bread! And even cola!”
Pop—a can of fish opened. Deng Zhiqi grabbed with his hands and stuffed food into his mouth.
Deng Zhixuan turned back, shaking her head like a little adult.
Wen Yushu rubbed her temple, exasperated. This kid…
“Deng Zhiqi!” Deng Tianyu roared, furious. “What are you doing? Is this what I taught you?”
“What am I doing? Isn’t this food for us?” Deng Zhiqi snapped back. “Do you know how many days I haven’t eaten my fill? I’m hungry now—why can’t I eat? What kind of parents are you and Mom?”
The words nearly accused Deng Tianyu and Wen Yushu of being useless.
Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang exchanged a surprised glance.
“You… how can you speak to your elders like that?” Deng Tianyu’s face burned with shame. “Even if you’re hungry, you should ask first! And who taught you to eat with your hands?”
“There are no chopsticks here! What’s wrong with using my hands? I’m hungry, I don’t care if it’s dirty!” Deng Zhiqi quickly finished the fish, then popped open a can of braised pork.
“Wait.” Mu Lantu spoke up.
Deng Tianyu lowered his head, embarrassed.
Mu Lantu said gently, “Zhiqi, you can eat as you like, but these are all meat dishes, and cold. I’m afraid your stomach won’t handle it. With zombies everywhere, it’s not easy to stop before leaving the city.”
Wen Yushu snatched the can from him. “Little Mu is right—I forgot. If you’re hungry, eat something else.”
“Ugh, stop nagging! I don’t want anything else!” Deng Zhiqi sneered at Mu Lantu, as if provoking him, and opened another can of meat.
Mu Lantu soothed Deng Tianyu kindly. “Professor Deng, please don’t be embarrassed. This food was prepared for your family. The leadership stressed again and again—our task isn’t just to escort you to Beijing, but also to take care of your needs along the way. Huazhang.”
Xu Huazhang pulled food from his pack and handed it to Deng Tianyu and Wen Yushu.
Deng Tianyu waved it off. “No, no, you keep it. You’ll need it too.”
“That’s right, there’s plenty. We’ll take some ourselves.” Wen Yushu caught his meaning, casually took three packs, and divided them among her husband, daughter, and herself.
Xu Huazhang glanced in the rearview mirror. “Lantu, another car behind us.”
“Probably other survivors trying to get out,” Mu Lantu said lightly, pressing the gas.
Better to avoid them, whoever they were.
“Mom!” Deng Zhiqi suddenly shouted.
“What is it?” Wen Yushu turned.
His face twisted, sweat beading on his nose, hands gripping the seat.
“What’s wrong?” She touched his forehead. “Unwell?”
A flicker of amusement flashed in Mu Lantu’s eyes. Stomach trouble, most likely.
“It hurts! My stomach hurts!” Deng Zhiqi yelled, kicking the seat. “Stop the car! I need the bathroom!”
Deng Tianyu looked at the road packed with zombies, chest heaving with anger.
“Hold it in! It’s all zombies outside—how do we stop?”
“I can’t! Stop! Stop the car!” Deng Zhiqi’s face turned red, twisting in pain.
Xu Huazhang’s fists itched.
Mu Lantu patiently said, “Professor Deng, we can’t stop here, too many zombies. There’s an alley ahead. I’ll turn there.”
“Alright, thank you. Ahh…” Deng Tianyu glared at his son in frustration.
Still, Deng Zhiqi kept howling.
The van hesitated but followed the SUV into the alley.
Dozens of zombies staggered there.
Xu Huazhang jumped out, sword flashing, clearing the horde.
Deng Zhiqi dashed into a shop without hesitation, ignoring two zombies lunging toward him.
Xu Huazhang’s eyes darkened. Not fearless—just relying on Mu Lantu and him, arrogant beyond measure.
As expected, the zombies were slain instantly, and Deng Zhiqi smirked triumphantly as he slipped inside.
“No need to follow me!” he shouted. Bathroom or not, he’d treat it as one.
Mu Lantu also got out, cutting down nearby zombies.
“What’s going on?”
Li Yangqiu and Ma Yueyue leapt out of the van with machetes.
“Nothing.” Xu Huazhang glanced at the suspicious truck that had followed them in.
A man leaned from the window, calling out cheerfully, “Hey, brothers, heading out of the city? Let’s team up!”
Li Yangqiu stayed silent, waiting for someone higher-ranked to answer.
Xu Huazhang said coolly, “If you really want to team up, get down here and help clear zombies.”
Ma Yueyue chuckled quietly with her back turned. Nice move.
Two men climbed from the truck and joined the fight.
Within ten minutes, the zombies were wiped out.
Deng Zhiqi swaggered out. “I’m done. Let’s go.”
Mu Lantu leaned against a tree, smiling faintly.
The car window lowered. Deng Tianyu was about to speak when—
“Ah! Out of paper!” Deng Zhiqi cried, clutching his stomach, running back inside—then reemerged, frantic, hand outstretched toward Mu Lantu. “Paper! Quick, quick, I don’t have any!”
Mu Lantu looked helpless. “I don’t have any on me—it’s in the bag.”
“You!” Deng Zhiqi stomped and pounded on the car window, roaring, “Mom! Paper!”
Wen Yushu’s face burned with shame. With a scowl, she tossed him a roll of toilet paper.
Deng Tianyu leaned back with a sigh.
“When did he turn into this?”
Wen Yushu muttered, regretful. “We’ve just been too busy to discipline him.”
“We didn’t discipline Zhixuan much either. Why isn’t she like him?” Deng Tianyu held back his fury.
Wen Yushu had no reply.
A few minutes later, Deng Zhiqi reappeared—this time quieter, dragging his feet, reluctant to board.
Out of respect for Deng Tianyu, Mu Lantu and Xu Huazhang said nothing, pretending to admire the scenery.
Nearly half an hour later, Deng Zhiqi finally climbed back in.
No one commented. They just restarted the journey.
Deng Zhiqi stopped eating but still rummaged.
Exasperated, Wen Yushu asked, “What are you looking for now?”
“I’m bored! Seeing if there’s a game console or books.” He pointed at Mu Lantu’s head. “Hey, got a phone? Let me play.”
“Mind your manners—call him Brother Mu,” Wen Yushu scolded.
Deng Zhiqi ignored her. “Well? Do you?”
“Can’t you be quiet for once?” Deng Tianyu exploded.
“No! I’m bored!” Deng Zhiqi yelled.
Deng Tianyu told Mu Lantu, “Don’t pay him any mind. Once he burns out, he’ll tire himself. When we get to the Capital, I’ll teach him a lesson.”
“Pfft.” Deng Zhiqi scoffed, rebellious, but finally closed his eyes and dozed.
Peace at last.
The road out of the city was clear, no blockages—already cleaned by earlier escapees.
After half an hour of driving, the SUV stopped at a fork.
Left led to the provincial road, right to the highway.
“Huazhang, provincial road or highway?” Mu Lantu hesitated.
The highway was faster—but risked blockages.
“Time’s still on our side,” Xu Huazhang replied. “Take the provincial road first.”
“I say provincial road!” Deng Zhiqi cut in. “I want to take a shower.”
“Deng Zhiqi!” Deng Tianyu warned sharply.
“Dad! What’s wrong with wanting a shower? I stink! So do you, Mom, and Zhixuan. Don’t you smell it?”
