Chapter 5: The Allied Forces (Part 2)
After Jin Chi’an’s words, Lin Chuan immediately restrained his hands. He followed him all the way back to the dormitory, silent the entire time like a quail that had been poisoned mute.
Lin Chuan, who had been holding it in the whole way, finally reached the dormitory. The moment he shut the door, he exploded.
“Damn it, I knew beastmen were no good. They’re even worse than those mentally unstable sentinels. The imperial royal family is no good either. They actually sent you off to marry a wild beast. What kind of lousy supreme commander is he? He even wants to live separately from you.”
Jin Chi’an grew a little irritated from his endless complaining. He let out a long sigh. His mind was filled with the white tiger’s majestic fur and those fluffy ears that trembled slightly when stroked. His hand itched, and he scratched his palm.
Seeing that he was not speaking, Lin Chuan grew so anxious that he practically jumped in place. Ignoring Puff, who had secretly run out beside Jin Chi’an’s leg, he stepped forward and questioned him.
“Say something, Jin Chi’an. Did they force you? Have you bonded with him? In novels, beastmen are not only savage and crude, some of them even practice polyandry or polygamy. If it really doesn’t work, I’ll help you run away from this marriage.”
Before anyone noticed, Puff had already straightened its hind legs, stood upright, and hugged Lin Chuan’s thigh.
Jin Chi’an was amused by Lin Chuan’s ridiculous words. He turned and joked with him, “Run away with you? Then I’ll have to think about it. After all, I like larger felines. I’m not interested in your little lump of golden hamster, though a tiny ball of fluff is pretty fun too.”
Sensing Puff’s movement as it tried to climb upward, Lin Chuan launched himself away like a spring. He stared warily at Jin Chi’an’s ill-intentioned face and the Maine Coon that was gradually approaching. A few tragic scenes of his face being smeared with drool flashed through his mind.
Lin Chuan did not stay on guard for long. A notification suddenly popped up on both of their optical computers at the same time:
All personnel, please proceed to the base’s central level immediately.
“The central level?” Jin Chi’an looked at Lin Chuan in confusion, then stood up and left the dormitory beside him.
Lin Chuan shot him a disdainful glance and explained, “The main body of the Allied Forces’ central AI. When the time comes, it’ll assign teams according to your specific abilities.”
“System allocation. Sounds just like drawing lots,” Jin Chi’an muttered.
As they spoke, the two of them boarded the shuttle passage. By the time they arrived at the central level, almost everyone had already gathered.
The enormous machine appearing before them was none other than the central AI’s main body.
Under Adjutant Edwin’s guidance, a guide walked up to the central AI. Several scanning beams flashed past, and the assignment result appeared clearly on the central display.
“Rear Medical Unit, Team Three.”
After several rounds of testing, Lin Chuan roughly figured out the pattern behind the AI’s assignments. He teased Jin Chi’an beside him, “Looks like you’ll probably be sent to act as an understanding brother for that bunch of lunatics.”
Watching several guides in a row get assigned to the medical unit, Jin Chi’an furrowed his brows slightly. Under Edwin’s welcoming gaze, he walked toward the central AI.
After several rounds of scanning, however, the central AI’s result did not appear for a long time.
Just as Jin Chi’an was considering taking the test again, Edwin’s shocked expression pulled his gaze back to the display screen.
“Frontline Reconnaissance Unit, Team Two.”
The unexpected result did not surprise Jin Chi’an or Lin Chuan.
Just as Jin Chi’an was about to leave, Edwin hurriedly stopped him. “Um, how about we—”
“Test again.”
Before Edwin could finish speaking, Felix’s voice suddenly came from behind, interrupting him.
Felix lowered his eyes and looked at Jin Chi’an, who wore a puzzled expression. His tone was firm. “Test again.”
The repeated scan did not change the optical computer’s judgment. On the contrary, the result appeared far more decisively this time.
“Frontline Reconnaissance Unit, Team Two.”
The result once again appeared on the display screen before them.
After confirming the result a second time, Felix no longer interfered. He turned and prepared to leave.
Seeing him walk away without another word, Jin Chi’an’s dissatisfaction flared up again. He called out to stop him.
“Felix, can we talk?”
Felix glanced back at him. “Official business or private business?”
Jin Chi’an froze briefly at the question, then replied, “Private business.”
“We’ll talk when we get back. I don’t discuss private matters at work.”
After leaving those words behind, Felix walked away directly, leaving Jin Chi’an standing there, caught off guard.
Seeing this, Edwin was just about to step forward and smooth things over when a bright, hearty male voice came from not far away.
“Chi’an!”
Jin Chi’an looked in the direction of the voice. A very familiar face appeared before him.
As a student from the Imperial Capital Sentinel Academy, Qin Hua had appeared more than once in joint practical classes with the guides from Loivette Academy. He had even interacted with Jin Chi’an and Lin Chuan during their early academy days.
“Chi’an, I didn’t expect to be assigned to the same team as you.”
Qin Hua jogged up to Jin Chi’an, a smile on his lips. Behind him, it was as if there were a fluffy tail wagging nonstop.
“Long time no see, Qin Hua.”
The corners of Jin Chi’an’s mouth curved up, and his expression changed from the seriousness he had shown when talking to Felix moments ago.
Standing to the side, Edwin took in the relaxed, pleasant scene of old friends meeting. Alarm bells immediately rang in his heart. Looking at the human sentinel’s dazzling and bright smile, he could not help breaking into a cold sweat for his marshal.
“What’s wrong? You don’t look too good.”
Qin Hua suddenly leaned close to Jin Chi’an as he spoke.
This unexpected movement did not just set Edwin’s alarm bells ringing. Just as he was about to step forward and separate them, Lin Chuan, who had been standing nearby, reached out and pulled Qin Hua back several steps.
“Hey, don’t stand so close, you two. With such a high compatibility rate, aren’t you afraid of triggering bonding heat?” Lin Chuan complained.
Compatibility rate. Bonding heat.
Edwin’s head heated up. Silently, he split apart the two terms, rearranged them, and finally replaced them with meanings he could understand.
Compatibility rate meant genetic purity.
Bonding heat meant estrus.
After making that connection, Edwin instantly became alert. His mind was filled with images of the two of them falling in love after being placed on the same team. He immediately felt as if a vast green meadow had grown over his marshal’s head.
Jin Chi’an clearly did not notice this marshal’s adjutant acting strangely. He naturally chatted with Qin Hua, and his mental tendrils unconsciously entered the other party’s undefended sea of consciousness.
A gray-white Siberian wolf was dozing off. A burst of comfortable rubbing gradually woke it up.
Through shared vision, Jin Chi’an’s face appeared before its eyes with a built-in pink filter.
The Siberian wolf instantly stood up and excitedly nuzzled the mental tendril that was massaging it.
Qin Hua, who perceived everything at the same time as his mental body, was enjoying the same treatment when a nosebleed flowed out at a very inappropriate moment.
Seeing this, Lin Chuan hurriedly stepped forward and separated the two of them. He extended his mental tendrils and temporarily sealed the mental zone connected to the guide’s compatibility, then shot a sharp glare at Jin Chi’an, who had hidden not far away.
Qin Hua wiped away the nosebleed flowing from beneath his nose. The fluctuations in his consciousness cloud made him unable to resist moving closer to Jin Chi’an. He did so until he pressed his heated forehead against Jin Chi’an’s shoulder and said softly, “Chi’an, rub me some more.”
Lin Chuan, who was tugging on the corner of his clothes, did his best to stop the intimate behavior between the two of them. Seeing that Qin Hua remained as immovable as a mountain, he raised his hand, ready to flick him hard on the forehead.
But Edwin suddenly stepped between the three of them and transferred the dazed Qin Hua onto himself.
Qin Hua was a little stunned by the sudden movement. He turned his head to look at Edwin, who was a whole head taller than him, and subconsciously sniffed at the other man’s neck. In a muddled voice, he asked, “Brother, are you a beastman?”
“Yes.”
Edwin’s eyelids twitched nonstop. From time to time, he observed his surroundings. The hair on his back stood on end. A beastman’s intuition made him feel as though his marshal was watching from somewhere nearby.
But Qin Hua, who was hanging on him, seemed to have no intention of calming down. Taking advantage of the situation, he wrapped his arms around Edwin’s neck and said, “Brother, can I see your beast form? You smell so nice.”
The moment he said that, Edwin’s body stiffened. He looked warily at the person hanging on him.
Jin Chi’an and Lin Chuan sighed. They found the stabilizer Qin Hua carried with him in his pocket and injected it into the back of his neck.
Lin Chuan extended his mental tendrils and roughly sorted through Qin Hua’s consciousness cloud, which was in complete chaos. He complained impatiently, “Damn, how long has it been since you last found a therapist for mental guidance?”
Qin Hua gradually regained consciousness. After clearly seeing Edwin’s face, he awkwardly released the hand that had been locked around the other man’s neck and hid behind Jin Chi’an.
Jin Chi’an’s face darkened. He cast a serious gaze toward Qin Hua and made a slightly troubled expression.
“Qin Hua, maintaining mental disorder for a long time will cause your mental power to decline. You should find a long-term, stable guide.”
“Can it be you?” Qin Hua looked at Jin Chi’an expectantly.
Before Jin Chi’an could respond, Edwin answered first.
“No.”
Edwin did not understand the human empire’s sentinel-guide system, but from the bits and pieces of the two men’s conversation and the Allied Forces’ team assignments, it was not hard to discover that most sentinels in the empire would be paired with a guide. And in the Allied Forces, those sentinels and guides who were paired long-term were often called “exclusive.”
Edwin forcefully suppressed his wildly pounding heart. His gaze carried a hint of dissatisfaction as he looked at the dazed Qin Hua. In his heart, he cursed the other man from head to toe.
How could his marshal’s spouse become someone else’s exclusive guide?
The atmosphere was tense for a time.
Qin Hua met Edwin’s unfriendly gaze and helplessly shrank behind Jin Chi’an again.
And that appearance of his was immediately judged by Edwin as that of a homewrecking, green-tea mistress trying to interfere in someone else’s marriage.
Little did he know that at this very moment, Qin Hua’s ears were turning red from being stared at so directly. He secretly opened his optical computer and sent text messages to Jin Chi’an and Lin Chuan.
Qin Hua: Chi’an, who is he?
Qin Hua: I think I smelled him just now. It seems like the scent of a wolf beastman.
Qin Hua: Since he’s a wolf beastman, do you think he’ll like Little Gray?
At this moment, inside Qin Hua’s mental sea, the Siberian wolf mental body known as Little Gray was excitedly wagging its tail, spinning in circles nonstop.
Through their shared vision, it kept glancing at Edwin standing opposite them.
Qin Hua: He’s so tall. A whole head taller than me. I even touched him just now. His body is really nice too. Can a sentinel and a beastman work?
Jin Chi’an and Lin Chuan were both irritated by the string of useless messages on their optical computers. In perfect unison, they said to Qin Hua:
“No.”
