Chapter 138: Feelings
Jiang Jue gave a low hum of acknowledgment, turning his gaze toward young Little Yu, who stood quietly beside him.
Though young, Little Yu was sharp and understood the dynamics at play. There was hardly any room left in this house; the third floor was claimed, and the second floor…
After thinking it over for a moment, the boy spoke up: “I’ll take a room on the second floor of the other villa, then. The bedrooms over there are really nice too.”
Everyone’s attention finally turned to Wang Li, who was gently cradling Niu Niu.
Wang Li smiled warmly, lightly patting her daughter’s back. “Niu Niu and I will just stay on the first floor of the big villa.”
She had noticed earlier that the ground-floor rooms were spacious and convenient. Since she handled most of the team’s cooking and meal prep, living on the ground floor made everyday chores much easier. More importantly, Niu Niu was still small; staying on the first floor removed any risk of the child tumbling down the stairs—it was both practical and safe.
Her choice was thoughtful, ensuring both comfort for her daughter and convenience for the group.
Jiang Jue nodded. “Then we’ll settle it that way.”
No sooner had he spoken than the sound of heavy, dragging footsteps echoed from the stairs.
Lin Weiwei descended from the second floor, her face as pale as a sheet. Her eyes were red and puffy, her footing unsteady, and every ounce of vitality had been completely drained from her.
The moment Chu Yang saw her, his brow furrowed in disgust. Unbelievable. This woman really has some nerve. He had suspected all along that she had played a dirty trick on Lin Xiao, and seeing the aftermath now only confirmed it.
Every eye in the living room locked onto Lin Weiwei.
Jiang Lin’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. She had known from the start that something was off about the woman, but she never imagined Lin Weiwei could be so brazen—stripping down to crawl into a man’s bed, all while acting haughty and entitled within the team. Just how thick-skinned could one person be?
Li Yu was usually polite and composed, but thinking about the calculated scheme, she couldn’t help cursing internally. She had long suspected that Lin Xiao’s feelings toward Su Mubai were unusual, even wondering if he might be bisexual, but she never imagined the truth behind that scandalous morning was this twisted.
Under the weight of their open disdain, Lin Weiwei shrank into herself.
Barely ten minutes ago, she had been greedily arguing over bedroom choices, convinced she could use Lin Xiao’s sense of duty to secure a permanent place of luxury in this villa. She never dreamed that in the blink of an eye, she would fall so far, so fast.
She parted her lips. Even after the initial shock had passed, a tiny spark of desperate hope had lingered—hoping that if she swallowed her pride and begged, they might let her stay in one of the empty rooms. Even in the worst room, she would still have the team’s protection to survive the harsh apocalypse.
Yet meeting Lin Xiao’s cold, disgusted glare, followed by the merciless contempt in everyone else’s eyes, the words died in her throat.
Lowering her head, she clutched the hem of her shirt with trembling hands and shuffled toward the exit, step by miserable step.
No one spoke up to stop her, nor did anyone utter a word. The entire room watched in heavy silence as she walked out the front door, their expressions a mix of scorn and relief.
Only after her figure vanished outside and the front door clicked shut did Li Yu break the quiet, asking hesitantly, “Did she… really just leave like that?”
Jiang Lin looked away from the door and nodded. “Looks like it. After pulling a stunt like that, she doesn’t have the face to stay.”
Li Yu sighed softly after a brief pause. “True enough. In a world like this, people with crooked intentions and cheap tricks never last long anyway.”
Su Mubai stared at the closed door, his thoughts unreadable. A sense of relief washed over him, mingled with a quiet, lingering sigh.
Before he could dwell on it any further, a warm, firm hand clamped around his wrist. With unyielding force, Lin Xiao pulled him straight up from the sofa.
“Lin Xiao, what are you doing?” Su Mubai startled, instinctively trying to wrench his arm free.
Lin Xiao only tightened his grip, his thumb pressing against the delicate pulse point of Su Mubai’s wrist. His gaze locked onto Su Mubai, burning with intense emotion. “Su Mubai, come upstairs with me. We need to talk. Just the two of us.”
His tone carried an immovable resolve, laced with an unmistakable, desperate plea.
Su Mubai looked into those dark eyes, seeing the turbulent storm of urgency, anxiety, longing, and raw fear behind them. In the end, he let out a quiet sigh and stopped resisting.
With everyone watching in stunned silence, Lin Xiao led him up the stairs, step by step, to the second floor.
Reaching the hallway, Lin Xiao pushed open the door to his bedroom suite and pulled Su Mubai inside.
The door clicked shut behind them.
The bedroom fell into absolute stillness, save for the faint rustle of the evening breeze outside the terrace doors.
Lin Xiao released his wrist, turning to face Su Mubai directly. His voice came out strained and tight: “Su Mubai… everything I said downstairs is the absolute truth. I like you. I’ve liked you for a very long time.”
Su Mubai leaned back against the wall, gazing at the man before him who felt both intensely familiar and strangely new. Lin Xiao’s expression was stripped of its usual carefree, teasing grin, replaced by an earnest, transparent vulnerability that held nothing back.
“Why are you only telling me this now?” Su Mubai asked softly, his voice edged with faint hoarseness.
Lin Xiao let out a bitter, self-deprecating chuckle, a flicker of pain crossing his eyes. “Because I genuinely believed… that something had happened between Lin Weiwei and me. I felt filthy. I thought I had lost the right to even stand in front of you, let alone tell you how I felt.”
“And you think you have that right now?” Su Mubai met his gaze squarely.
“Because now I know the truth.” Lin Xiao took a step forward, but afraid of pushing too hard, he stopped half a step away, his eyes wide and pleading. “Su Mubai, I know this is sudden. And I know… you might not have feelings for men. But I needed you to know the truth. I couldn’t keep lying to myself and hiding it from you anymore. I’m not asking for anything in return, I swear.”
Looking at Lin Xiao’s anxious, almost humble posture, Su Mubai felt his heart twist into a complicated knot.
A long silence stretched between them. His fingertips absently traced the subtle wood grain of the wall panel before he finally whispered, “Lin Xiao… I don’t know.”
He genuinely didn’t know if this sudden confession was real, or if it was merely an emotional reaction sparked by the relief of knowing the truth.
He was afraid. He feared this was just an impulsive whim born from the adrenaline of the moment. He feared that if he let down his guard, it would all turn out to be another painful misunderstanding—shattering the defenses he had fought so hard to rebuild, leaving him broken even worse than before.
“It’s alright,” Lin Xiao said quickly, desperate to reassure him. “Take all the time you need to think it over.”
“I just need you to know that to me, you’ve always been different. From the day we met in our college dorm, to when the world ended, and through every single battle we fought back-to-back… you have always been the most important person in my life.”
Su Mubai looked at him, a subtle ripple disturbing the calm in his dark eyes.
Lin Xiao drew a deep breath. “I won’t force you into anything. Whatever you decide, I’ll accept it. Just… please don’t push me away and avoid me like before, alright?”
Su Mubai lowered his gaze, his long eyelashes casting soft shadows over his pale cheeks. After a lingering pause, he gave a faint, quiet nod. “Okay.”
