Chapter 137: Confession
Lin Xiao stared down at Lin Weiwei’s tear-streaked face, contorted with anger, pain, and fear. As her shrill sobs filled the room, a single thought echoed frantically through his mind: He hadn’t slept with her.
He had never touched Lin Weiwei.
Everything from that night had been a calculated misunderstanding—a setup.
It had all been a lie.
Slowly, his grip loosened. Stripped of his support, Lin Weiwei’s knees buckled, and she crumpled onto the floor, trembling as quiet sobs wracked her body.
“Heh… haha…” A soft laugh broke from Lin Xiao’s lips. At first, it was merely a choked, breathless chuckle, but it quickly swelled into full, unrestrained laughter. It was a sound laced with raw relief and bitter self-mockery. His shoulders shook violently, and a flush of red crept into the corners of his eyes.
All the suffocating guilt and torment he had inflicted upon himself during these past weeks had been nothing more than an absurd joke.
Watching his unhinged reaction, the final flicker of hope in Lin Weiwei’s heart died completely.
Bracing a hand against the floor, she pushed herself up with trembling limbs and backed away until her spine hit the wall. Her voice dropped to a barely audible whisper: “I’m sorry… I know it’s too late to apologize. I’ll leave right now, and I won’t ever show my face in front of you again.”
“You think an apology is enough to wipe the slate clean?” Lin Xiao took a sharp step forward, his tall frame looming over her, his tone dropping to absolute zero. “Because of that sick little act of yours, I spent every single day drowning in self-loathing!”
“I genuinely believed I had taken advantage of you. I couldn’t even bring myself to face my own feelings!”
“You didn’t just ruin one night—you ruined what I could have had with—”
He cut himself off abruptly.
Lin Weiwei caught the unfinished thought instantly.
Looking up through her tears, realization flared in her eyes. “What you could have had with who? Lin Xiao, were you—”
“Shut up,” Lin Xiao snapped, the volatile storm in his chest refusing to be contained any longer.
All he cared about right now was finding Su Mubai immediately. He needed to lay everything bare, clear the air, and confess every hidden feeling he had buried during this agonizing period.
Without another glance at her, he spun around and bolted out the door.
He threw open the door to Su Mubai’s bedroom next door, only to find it completely deserted.
Lin Xiao’s chest tightened with panic. He sprinted down the spiral staircase, rounding the corner just in time to spot Su Mubai sitting on the ground-floor sofa. Wang Qiang, Li Yu, Jiang Lin, and the others were gathered around him, chatting quietly while Su Mubai listened with a calm, composed expression.
“Little Bai…” Lin Xiao called out from the foot of the stairs, his voice rough and strained.
The lively chatter in the living room died instantly. Every eye turned toward him.
Su Mubai slowly lifted his head. His dark eyes were remarkably clear and still. When his gaze met Lin Xiao’s, there was not a single ripple of emotion—he looked at him with the cool detachment of an ordinary teammate, keeping a polite, impenetrable distance between them.
The coldness in that look stung Lin Xiao like a physical blow. His heart twisted with an acute ache, his eyes turning bloodshot as he closed the distance between them. “Little Bai, I need to talk to you. Can you come over here for a second?”
Su Mubai looked at the raw urgency and redness in Lin Xiao’s eyes, remaining silent for a brief moment. His Adam’s apple bobbed slightly. He had intended to say something gentler, but when he opened his mouth, only a flat chill came out: “If you have something to say, say it right here.”
Lin Xiao’s breath caught in his throat. Confronted by Su Mubai’s cold indifference, the tidal wave of emotions he had suppressed for weeks completely shattered his restraint.
Lunging forward, Lin Xiao ignored the stunned onlookers, seized Su Mubai’s arms, and hauled him up from the sofa, pulling him violently into a crushing embrace.
His arms locked tightly around Su Mubai’s back, pressing the other man against his chest with desperate force, as though trying to fuse their very bones together—terrified that the moment he loosened his grip, Su Mubai would slip away forever.
“Little Bai…” Lin Xiao’s voice broke against Su Mubai’s ear, spilling over with long-buried sorrow and wild relief. “I didn’t sleep with Lin Weiwei. I was blackout drunk that night, but I remember… I know for a fact that the only person on my mind was you.”
“You probably think I’m out of my mind, or that this is completely uncalled for, but Little Bai… I like you.”
“It’s been driving me insane. Every time I looked at you, I wanted nothing more than to be close to you, but every time I remembered that night, I felt so dirty and ashamed… But now I know for sure. I didn’t touch her. Nothing happened between us!”
The entire living room plunged into a deafening silence.
The glass of water in Li Yu’s hand slipped through her fingers, hitting the carpet with a dull thud as the liquid spread into a wide, dark stain.
Wang Qiang’s jaw dropped so far his mouth was practically an open circle.
Jiang Lin clapped both hands over her mouth, her eyes wide as saucers as she stared back and forth between Lin Xiao and Su Mubai, her brain short-circuiting under the sheer shock.
Su Mubai froze entirely.
His mind went completely blank, a high-pitched ring filling his ears. The only things he could register were Lin Xiao’s blazing body heat and the frantic, heavy pounding of his heart. That desperate ‘I like you’ struck him like a bolt of lightning, tearing straight through every wall of stoic self-preservation he had built around himself.
Right at that moment, Jiang Jue and Chu Yang walked through the front door.
The second Chu Yang crossed the threshold, Lin Xiao’s trembling confession rang clear as day. Chu Yang came to a sudden halt, his eyes bulging and his mouth hanging open, unable to utter a single sound.
What… in the world was happening?
Old Lin and Little Bai?!
His gaze darted frantically between the two men. He had always known there was an awkward tension between them lately, but never in his wildest dreams had he imagined this.
Old Lin actually has feelings for Little Bai?
But Little Bai is a guy!
“Old Lin, what the hell are you…” Chu Yang finally managed to find his voice, though he had no idea how to finish the sentence.
Taking in the paralyzed crowd, Jiang Jue cleared his throat. His deep, commanding voice effortlessly broke the bizarre silence: “Ahem.”
The group snapped back to reality, hastily mumbling greetings: “Boss…”
Lin Xiao finally loosened his embrace, though his hands remained firmly clamped onto Su Mubai’s shoulders. He stared directly into his eyes, his gaze overflowing with raw hope and agonizing anxiety. “Little Bai… what do you think?”
Su Mubai felt as though his head were spinning. He parted his lips, his voice coming out dry and faint: “I… I need some time to process this.”
Jiang Jue swept his gaze across the room, walked over to the center sofa, and took a seat. In a calm, steady tone, he addressed the squad: “Now that the transaction is settled, we are officially residents of this base.”
“Regarding the rooms, Chu Yang and I will be taking the third floor of this villa.”
“The rest of the living arrangements are up to you to divide.”
The moment those words were spoken, the teammates—who were still reeling from the explosive confession—immediately refocused on the matter at hand. Living quarters were a practical issue that affected everyone directly!
Li Yu and Jiang Lin traded subtle, knowing glances, their eyes sparkling with unspoken gossip, but their immediate priority was securing the best rooms.
Li Yu surveyed the villa. She remembered Lin Xiao mentioning earlier that he and Su Mubai would take the second floor. While the ground-floor suites were comfortable, they couldn’t compare to the third-floor layout of the grand villa next door.
Her eyes lit up, and she offered Jiang Jue a bright smile: “Boss, I think the third floor of the large villa next door is fantastic. The sunlight is amazing, and the view is wide open.”
Turning to Wang Qiang, she nudged him. “Wang Qiang, why don’t we take that floor?”
Coming back to his senses, Wang Qiang nodded quickly. “Works for me. I’ll follow your lead.”
Hearing Li Yu claim the top floor next door, Jiang Lin quickly ran the calculations in her head. She knew her cousin Jiang Jue had always maintained a distant attitude toward her, and given her past interactions with Chu Yang, keeping a respectful distance was the smartest move.
She chimed in without hesitation: “Then I’ll take the other bedroom on the third floor next door! Doesn’t that level have two suites separated by a central lounge? We won’t get in each other’s way at all.”
As she spoke, she shot a knowing, playful glance at Wang Qiang and Li Yu—with a lounge acting as a buffer between their rooms, whatever noise the couple made at night wouldn’t disturb her in the slightest.
