Chapter 117: They Got Together, Didn’t They
The hallway was already deserted.
Lin Xiao leaned back against the wall, vigorously rubbing his swollen face. The throbbing hangover headache and the sudden shock from moments ago made his head buzz, leaving his mind in a chaotic daze.
Instinctively, his gaze drifted toward Su Mubai’s tightly shut door, and an intense, inexplicable wave of unease surged in his chest.
Why… why had the look in Little Bai’s eyes when he walked away made him feel so panicked?
It was a terrifying sensation, as though he had just lost something irreplaceable.
He raised a hand to knock, his fingers hovering inches from the wooden panel, but he froze in hesitation.
How could he possibly explain this?
Should he say that he had been completely wasted, blacked out, and remembered nothing at all?
Would Little Bai even believe him?
Even if he did, what difference would it make?
He and Lin Weiwei had already crossed that line, and he had already promised to take full responsibility.
Lin Xiao let out a heavy sigh, lowered his arm, and paced back and forth along the corridor in sheer frustration, his chest tight with a tangled knot of emotions.
Inside the room, the moment the door clicked shut, Su Mubai’s rigid spine completely gave out, as if every ounce of strength holding him upright had been drained away in an instant.
He stumbled back two paces, his back slamming hard against the closed door.
With all sounds from the hallway cut off, the room fell terrifyingly silent, save for his own ragged, trembling breaths that pounded like hammer strikes against his eardrums.
He slowly raised a hand to cover his mouth, his fingertips pressing firmly against his lips in a desperate attempt to swallow back the uncontrollable sobs.
In the dark, that accidental kiss had carried the burning heat of liquor.
The sudden racing pulse when their lips touched, the secret, overwhelming joy and fear that threatened to burn him to ashes, that foolish hope that had quietly taken root under the cover of the night…
The moment he had pushed open that door and seen the disheveled room, every single illusion had shattered completely.
Not a single shred of hope was left to comfort himself with.
Su Mubai slid down the surface of the door until he was curled up on the cold floor, his arms locked tightly around his knees.
Burying his face in his arms, the stifled weeping finally broke free—each quiet sob softer than the last, yet each one cutting far deeper.
An hour later, the convoy was ready to roll out.
The sun had climbed high into the sky, beating down mercilessly on the open lot. The asphalt was baking hot, and the temperature was climbing sharply. A suffocating smell of parched dust mingled with the scorched scent of sunbaked metal, making every breath feel searing.
Three vehicles sat parked in the clearing, their hoods throwing off a blinding glare under the blazing sunlight.
Wang Qiang and Li Yu were inspecting the tire pressure, while Jiang Lin and Wang Li organized the supplies in the trunks, methodically sorting drinking water, food crates, and first-aid kits.
Chu Yang lay sprawled across the hood of the lead car, tinkering with an engine component while humming a tuneless melody under his breath. Yet out of the corner of his eye, he kept glancing behind Lin Xiao with undisguised curiosity.
Lin Weiwei was trailing right behind Lin Xiao, a radiant smile practically spilling over her face.
Chu Yang gave a knowing nod to himself, instantly finding his answer. No wonder Lin Xiaoyu’s team had driven off that morning without Lin Weiwei—she had stayed behind specifically to remain with Lin Xiao.
It made sense, of course. Since they had already done that, it was only natural for them to stick together.
Still… Chu Yang watched Lin Xiao walking in front.
Lin Xiao’s back was stiff and straight, his footsteps heavy, and the sharp profile of his jaw remained tight and tense. He looked nothing like someone who had just gotten what he wanted.
Chu Yang scratched the back of his neck, feeling a strange twinge of unease resurface, but he didn’t dwell on it and simply lowered his head to continue working.
Lin Xiao forced himself forward, braving the open and subtle stares of the entire group, and walked over to Jiang Jue, who was wiping down a windshield with a rag.
His steps faltered, his Adam’s apple bobbed twice, and after several agonizing seconds of hesitation, he forced the words out: “Boss… Weiwei wants to travel with us from now on… is that alright?”
Jiang Jue straightened up, casually tossing the damp rag over the hood of the car, and looked between Lin Xiao and Lin Weiwei.
His dark gaze was calm, yet it held a piercing sharpness that seemed capable of seeing straight through a person’s soul. Under that penetrating stare, Lin Xiao instinctively stiffened his back and shifted his eyes away, deeply unsettled.
Lin Weiwei, feeling the weight of Jiang Jue’s scrutiny, did not back down in the slightest. Instead, she took the initiative to slip her fingers into Lin Xiao’s hand, leaning softly against his arm in an intimate, natural gesture.
Lin Xiao’s entire body instantly locked up.
He instinctively moved to pull his hand back, but Lin Weiwei held on tight, her fingertips lightly brushing against his palm.
Jiang Jue’s eyes dropped directly to their intertwined hands.
After a few tense seconds of absolute silence, Jiang Jue gave a slow, measured nod, his deep voice carrying clearly: “That’s fine.”
Lin Weiwei let out a quiet sigh of relief, the smile on her lips widening even further.
Lin Xiao, however, felt as though his palm was resting against an open flame.
Over by the side, Li Yu—who was busy filling water bottles—caught the entire exchange, her eyes widening into wide circles.
She slipped over to Chu Yang, keeping her voice low with thinly veiled curiosity. “Brother Chu, what… what is going on here?”
Chu Yang was squatting by the front wheel checking the pressure gauge. Hearing her question, he didn’t even bother looking up, answering casually, “What does it look like? Lin Xiao and Lin Weiwei got together, that’s all.”
“No way?!” Li Yu’s voice jumped up an octave in pure disbelief, drawing a curious glance from Wang Li, who was packing her daughter’s bag nearby. “Wait… wasn’t Lin Xiao actively avoiding her yesterday? How did they end up so clingy after just one night? And now he’s letting her join our squad?”
Chu Yang stood up, dusted off his palms, and glanced over at the “new couple” standing under everyone’s watchful eyes.
Lin Weiwei was whispering something into Lin Xiao’s ear, but Lin Xiao looked completely distracted, his eyes drifting repeatedly toward the hotel stairwell.
“Who knows,” Chu Yang shrugged, his tone laced with a faint, unreadable nuance. “When feelings hit, sometimes they just happen too fast to stop.”
Li Yu wanted to press for more details, but sensing that Chu Yang had no interest in gossiping, she turned away awkwardly.
After taking a few steps, she spotted Jiang Lin carrying a water bucket. Li Yu quickly pulled her to the side, whispering, “Linlin, did you hear? Brother Chu said Lin Xiao and Lin Weiwei are officially together!”
Jiang Lin’s face remained entirely calm. Setting the bucket down, she lowered her voice as well. “I saw it this morning.”
“Saw what?” Li Yu’s curiosity flared instantly, and she leaned in close.
“Lin Weiwei coming out of Lin Xiao’s room.” Jiang Lin paused, adding in a flat yet meaningful tone, “And… when she walked out, her clothes were disheveled, and her hair was a complete mess.”
“What?!” Li Yu gasped softly, her eyes going even wider.
The two women locked eyes, sharing an instant, unspoken understanding.
Li Yu pursed her lips, while Jiang Lin gave a subtle shake of her head. Both fell silent, though their glances toward Lin Xiao and Lin Weiwei were laced with complicated, lingering thoughts.
