Chapter 116: It’s Not Like That
Su Mubai was standing in the doorway, though no one knew how long he had been there. His face was as pale as paper, his eyes locked entirely on the mess inside the room.
His lips were pressed into a rigid, bloodless line, and he stood frozen as if nailed to the floor.
“No, don’t misunderstand! I really don’t know what happened!” Lin Xiao babbled incoherently, scrambling to snatch his pants off the floor and frantically pulling them on. “I drank too much last night and blacked out. I don’t remember a single thing—I swear!”
Chu Yang waved a hand dismissively, a glint of mischievous amusement in his eyes as he lowered his voice. “No need to explain, no need to explain! I understand, I get it! Just sort things out yourself, Old Lin. We’re heading down to eat, so hurry up and join us!”
Although Chu Yang had never entirely approved of Lin Weiwei’s past behavior, if his friend genuinely liked her, he would naturally give them his blessing. After all, he vividly remembered how lost and devastated Lin Xiao had looked back when Lin Weiwei had abandoned the team.
With that, Chu Yang naturally reached out and slung an arm around Su Mubai’s shoulders. “Come on, Little Bai, let’s head down first—”
He had barely finished half the sentence when he abruptly felt something was wrong.
Su Mubai’s shoulders were rigid as stone, and even his breathing carried a faint, imperceptible tremble.
Looking down at his companion’s face, Chu Yang noticed that Su Mubai’s expression was grim to the point of being frightening. His eyes were devoid of light, dead and hollow.
“Little Bai, why do you look so terrible?” Chu Yang paused, lowering his voice under the assumption that Su Mubai simply disliked Lin Weiwei. “Do you have a problem with Lin Weiwei, too? Still, it’s not really our place to judge. What matters is that Lin Xiao likes her, right? When it comes to matters of the heart, outsiders can’t interfere.”
Su Mubai gave no response. His hand, hanging loosely at his side, clenched into a tight fist, his nails digging painfully deep into his palm.
A flash of raw, silent self-mockery crossed his eyes.
That’s right. Lin Xiao likes her. Likes her enough… to spend the entire night with another woman.
“Hey? Little Bai, where are you going? Aren’t we getting breakfast?” Chu Yang watched in bewilderment as Su Mubai wrenched himself free from his arm and turned briskly toward his own room, his steps unsteady and erratic. Full of confusion, Chu Yang called out after him.
Su Mubai didn’t even look back. He walked with a hurried, desperate pace, as though fleeing from something terrifying, his voice trembling on the edge of breaking: “I’m not hungry. You guys go ahead.”
Bang.
The door slammed shut, cutting off all sound from the hallway.
Chu Yang stood alone in the corridor, scratching the back of his head in utter bewilderment. “What’s going on with him? Has Lin Xiao been holding back so long that he finally got a girlfriend? Is Little Bai jealous because he doesn’t have one? No, that doesn’t make sense… He’s not that kind of person.”
Just as he muttered to himself, Jiang Jue climbed the stairs carrying a small tray. Atop it sat a steaming bowl of warm millet porridge alongside a small dish of crisp pickles.
“Yangyang, what are you daydreaming about out here?” Jiang Jue’s dark gaze landed on him. Seeing Chu Yang standing outside Su Mubai’s door, Jiang Jue frowned slightly, a subtle hint of concern coloring his tone.
Snapping back to reality, Chu Yang caught sight of the tray and his eyes lit up. “Brother Jiang! Why did you bring breakfast up? I could have just gone down to the dining room—”
“You drank quite a bit last night,” Jiang Jue said simply, handing the tray over with a soft, steady look. “I figured you’d wake up with a headache. Everyone else is still eating downstairs, so I brought this up for you first. Eat it while it’s hot; millet porridge is good for the stomach.”
A sudden wave of warmth bloomed in Chu Yang’s chest as he took the tray. The comforting aroma drifted past his nose, instantly scattering much of his earlier confusion.
Holding the tray, he couldn’t help teasing with a grin, “Boss, you’re too good to me! This is VIP treatment. If you ever find a wife down the road, you’re going to spoil her rotten, aren’t you?”
Though spoken in a light, bantering tone with a smile on his lips, an inexplicable sourness twisted inside his chest, leaving a heavy, uncomfortable knot.
Jiang Jue held his gaze for a long moment, his deep eyes masking a torrent of unspoken emotions. After a few seconds of silence, he answered quietly, “Maybe.”
The smile froze on Chu Yang’s face, and the sour knot in his chest tightened. That’s right. If Brother Jiang ever finds a girlfriend the way Lin Xiao did, would he stop treating him this way?
Suddenly, the millet porridge lost all its appeal.
Noticing the subtle shift in Chu Yang’s mood, Jiang Jue’s eyes darkened, though he chose to remain silent.
Inside the bedroom, Lin Xiao was already fully dressed. Lin Weiwei remained curled up beneath the covers, her shoulders heaving as she let out soft, pitiful sniffling noises.
Lin Xiao irritably dragged a hand through his hair, his mind in total chaos. The pounding hangover combined with the sheer absurdity of the situation made his head spin.
He had undeniably drunk too much the night before; his memory cut out entirely the moment he had clinked glasses with the others. He had zero recollection of what followed. Damn it… why did I have to drink so much?
“Last night… we…” Lin Xiao began with difficulty, his throat feeling like sandpaper. He searched for words, completely at a loss for how to ask.
Lin Weiwei raised her swollen, tear-stained eyes. Thick lashes brushed against her cheeks as she choked out a sob, looking thoroughly wronged yet undeniably shy. “Brother Lin… you… you wouldn’t let go of me last night. You kept saying you liked me, and that… that you would take responsibility… I’ve had feelings for you for a long time, so I…”
She trailed off, blushing deeply as she cast her gaze downward in a bashful display, though she secretly tracked Lin Xiao’s expression through her eyelashes.
Lin Xiao’s temples throbbed viciously. He felt like his skull was about to crack open. Liked her? Did he actually say he liked Lin Weiwei?
He couldn’t deny that when they first met, he had been drawn to her looks and felt a mild attraction. But after she abandoned them, those lingering feelings had long since evaporated.
Did he really say those things last night? Why can’t I remember any of it? Still… things have gone this far. I can’t just pretend it never happened.
“I’ll take responsibility,” Lin Xiao said after a long, agonizing silence, forcing the words out through a dry throat.
In a brutal world where life hung by a thread, a man couldn’t just use a woman and walk away without a backward glance.
Lin Weiwei’s eyes lit up, her sobbing instantly cutting off. A flash of triumphant satisfaction flickered across her features before she quickly lowered her head again, exposing her slender, pale neck as she murmured weakly, “Brother Lin, you don’t have to force yourself… I know I’m not good enough for you. Last night was my own choice; you don’t need to feel pressured…”
“Don’t talk like that,” Lin Xiao interrupted, his mind a tangled knot of frustration. He just wanted to escape this suffocating room as fast as humanly possible. “Get yourself cleaned up and change your clothes. We’ll talk later.”
With that, he practically bolted from the room, moving as though a pack of feral beasts were snapping at his heels.
