Chapter 30
This afternoon’s trip to the hospital was not only to see Grandpa. Tang Rong had also been scheduled for a whole series of examinations. Tang Zheng’en had already gone ahead to make arrangements, and Han Zhi and Shen Chuanqiong were there as well.
If Tang Rong really did possess an unprecedented healing ability, then the family would no longer have to keep shrinking back in fear, worrying that they would always turn into “monsters” and not daring to meet him.
As long as they stayed by his side, they would not turn into monsters, and naturally there would be no need to worry about frightening him.
The hospital where Old Master Tang was staying was located within Eden Garden. Although it lay across more than half of Eden Garden from the Tang family villa, it still was not especially far.
After getting into the hovercar, Tang Rong suddenly asked, “Uncle, is there anything Grandpa likes?”
The butler froze for a second, not knowing why Tang Rong had suddenly asked that, but he still answered, “He likes little tigers. The little tiger slippers Rongrong wears at home were prepared by Grandpa.”
Because his spirit form was a tiger, the old master was especially fond of anything with tiger elements.
Whenever one of the children in the family was born, the old master would prepare a pair of cute and festive tiger-head shoes for them. Before Tang Rong had been born, he had already prepared a pair of tiny tiger-head shoes for a baby—but unfortunately, an accident happened, and they were never worn. This time, once Tang Rong was found, he had immediately had a new pair prepared.
After hearing that, Tang Rong nodded, lowered his head, and began fiddling with his optical brain.
The butler sat right beside him, so naturally he could see what was on Tang Rong’s screen.
Tang Rong had opened the drawing tool built into the optical brain, and had split the screen to search for some tiger pictures. Then he began drawing very seriously on the canvas.
The butler’s eyes curved into a smile without him even realizing it.
This trip to see Grandpa had been far too rushed. From finding out about it to actually setting out, only a few minutes had passed. There had been no time to prepare any gift for Grandpa, so that was why Tang Rong had suddenly asked what the old master liked—he wanted to draw him a picture as a present.
What a good child.
Knowing the old master’s personality, he had definitely also prepared a gift for his little grandson. The butler wondered what that gift might be…
Eden Garden was huge and sparsely populated, with very few vehicles. The hovercar rode so smoothly that there was almost no bumpiness at all, so even reading, studying, or drawing in the car was no problem.
By the time the hovercar was almost at the hospital, Tang Rong had finally finished the drawing.
In the picture was a cute little tiger, holding up a sign in its little paws, with a few clumsy words written on it: “Grandpa, get better soon.”
Tang Rong had asked butler Uncle to teach him how to write that line. He had copied it stroke by stroke onto the picture.
In order to give the old master a surprise, the butler had specifically contacted the bodyguards at the hospital and asked them to shut off the vehicle surveillance feed on the old master’s side, so he would not see it in advance.
The bodyguard had immediately replied with a completed-task sticker, followed right after by a puking-face sticker.
Butler: “?”
The bodyguard secretly typed: [Brother Ji, please hurry up. I seriously can’t eat anymore.]
Butler: “…?”
At last, the hovercar came to a smooth stop in the hospital parking lot.
The butler took Tang Rong by the hand and led him into the courtyard, first going to the self-service printer to print out the little tiger picture Tang Rong had drawn in the hovercar.
Holding the still-warm printed sheet, Tang Rong looked full of curiosity and tilted up his little head to ask, “Uncle, how much does it cost to print one?”
He did not really know many words. The butler had moved so quickly just now that he had not even had time to look carefully.
The butler answered, “A color print costs one star coin per sheet.”
Tang Rong’s eyes widened slightly.
That was way too expensive…
One star coin was enough to buy two or three steamed buns. Back on the garbage planet, there were times when several days would pass and he would not even get to eat a single steamed bun.
Tang Rong had originally wanted to print a few more photos, but he instantly lost all interest and hurriedly tugged butler Uncle away from that money-eating machine.
He could not just spend the family’s money recklessly.
The butler had no idea what was going on in his mind, so he simply let himself be obediently led along. A few seconds later, he smiled and said, “That’s the wrong way, Rongrong. Grandpa’s hospital room is in that direction.”
Tang Rong stopped in embarrassment, spun around quickly, switched directions, and pattered off briskly as if nothing at all had just happened.
Very soon, the two of them arrived in front of the inpatient building elevator.
This was Tang Rong’s very first time riding in an elevator. Nervous and excited, he tightened his grip a little on the butler’s hand.
There were elevators on the garbage planet too, but in places with elevators, little dirty bundles like him were never allowed inside. The only ones he had ever seen up close were broken-down elevators in abandoned ruins, long since unable to run.
Once inside the elevator, the butler entered his identity credentials, and only then did the button for the top floor appear.
The people staying on the top floor were all prominent figures on the capital planet. Its security and confidentiality were the best as well, and ordinary people could not go near it lightly.
The elevator slowly rose. The sense of being weighed down felt strangely wonderful, as though something was pressing him gently downward.
Tang Rong silently protected the picture he had printed out for Grandpa. He did not feel scared at all—only curious.
The elevator was not slow, and since it was going directly to the top floor, it did not stop once on the way. Before long, it came to a halt.
The elevator doors slid open. Tang Rong blinked curiously and looked outside, then was led out by the butler.
The top floor did not really look like a hospital ward at all. It looked more like some kind of luxury hotel.
After all, the people staying here all had their own personal doctors, caregivers, and so on. They were only living here because they needed the medical conditions provided by the hospital inside Eden Garden.
The two of them headed straight for Tang Yinsheng’s room and knocked on the door.
The door opened very quickly. It was opened by a bodyguard in black. He was chewing something, and there were even a few dragon fruit seeds stuck near the corner of his mouth.
As for why Tang Rong could tell it was dragon fruit—the moment the door opened, an intense dragon fruit smell came washing out. There was really no way to guess wrong.
The bodyguard shot the butler a look of someone who had just seen his savior, then lowered his gaze and curiously glanced at the little radish-head beside him before quickly stepping aside to let them in.
As soon as he entered the room, the butler finally understood what the dragon fruit situation was.
On the floating tray by the head of the hospital bed sat a little snow leopard carved out of dragon fruit.
Clearly, it had been specially made as a gift for little Rong.
And children this age really did tend to like cute little things like that.
Dragon fruit flesh was fairly soft and not especially easy to carve. It really had been hard on the old master and… on that bodyguard who had eaten dragon fruit until he was nearly sick of it.
When the old master had been young, he had been a famous general. Every time foreign enemies attacked, he would stay on the front lines for a long time defending the homeland. In hard times, even food had to be broken apart and carefully rationed. That was why he had developed the habit of never wasting food.
Anyone could guess where all the failed dragon fruit carvings had ended up.
The old master had several bodyguards, but he found too many people annoying to look at, and since the place was completely safe, he only had them rotate one per day.
The butler cast the nearby bodyguard a sympathetic glance.
As for Tang Rong, the moment he entered the room, all his attention went to the elderly man lying in the hospital bed. The other man was looking at him too, and just like that, their gazes met directly.
Tang Rong obediently greeted him, “Hello, Grandpa.”
“Little Rong.” Tang Yinsheng’s eyes curved out of control, the lines on his face crinkling even more. Yet he had a kindly face, one that did not resemble at all the fierce figure who had once dominated the battlefield in his youth.
He immediately waved a hand in flustered excitement. “Come here to Grandpa, quickly.”
Tang Rong at once took the drawing in his hand and padded over on his little short legs. His gaze finally shifted a little away from Grandpa and landed on the dragon fruit snow leopard, making his pale green eyes widen slightly.
Seeing that, Tang Yinsheng explained somewhat nervously, “Since little Rong likes snow leopards so much, Grandpa carved a little snow leopard out of dragon fruit for you. I don’t know if little Rong likes it.”
These past few days, Tang Rong had been eating a little bowl of cut fruit platter every day and had already gotten to know many new fruits, including dragon fruit.
Grandpa had actually carved him a little snow leopard out of dragon fruit…
“Grandpa is amazing!”
Tang Rong made no attempt to hide the joy and admiration in his eyes. Just seeing that made Tang Yinsheng feel as though his old bones had suddenly gotten better again. He could practically go onto the battlefield right now together with his “undergoing surgery” eldest grandson Tang Yao and fight a battle.
Tang Rong lovingly looked over the dragon fruit little snow leopard for a good while, then suddenly remembered something and handed over the picture in his hand. “Grandpa, I prepared a gift for you too. I drew it myself.”
Tang Yinsheng had already noticed the paper in Tang Rong’s hand when he first came in, but Tang Rong had kept the side with the picture turned toward himself, so he had never managed to see what was on it.
Tang Yinsheng eagerly took the gift from his hands and eagerly lowered his eyes to look. Once he saw the drawing and the words on it, his eyes suddenly grew a little wet.
“Butler Uncle said you like little tigers, so I drew a little tiger,” Tang Rong said.
“Thank you, little Rong. Grandpa likes it very much.” Tang Yinsheng used the motion of lifting the drawing higher and examining it closely to cover his face, blinking quickly to force back the tears. He did not want to show weakness in front of his little grandson.
Once he finally suppressed the tears, Tang Yinsheng lowered the drawing and met Tang Rong’s eyes again. “Little Rong draws so well. Later, Grandpa will hire a professional teacher to teach you drawing.”
“Okay.”
In Tang Rong’s subconscious, learning was an investment. It would make him become more and more capable so that he could earn more and more money in the future to support the family. So when it came to hiring teachers or learning, he never felt it was a waste of the family’s money.
Printing photos just to please himself, on the other hand, was a kind of unnecessary “waste.”
There was a special adjustable chair prepared for Tang Rong beside the hospital bed, and he sat there chatting with Grandpa for quite a long time.
They talked about whatever came to mind, one thing after another. There was not the slightest sign of running out of topics.
But seeing that it was getting late, and that they absolutely had to go do the examinations first, the butler finally interrupted the grandfather and grandson. “Rongrong, the scheduled physical examination is about to begin. Uncle will take you there first, alright? If everything goes smoothly, we can come back and keep Grandpa company after it’s done.”
Tang Rong obediently nodded and climbed down from the little chair.
Everyone in the family had poor health, so he absolutely could not get sick too. He had to do his physical examination properly.
Although Tang Yinsheng was reluctant, he also knew that the examinations were important, so he could only reluctantly tell Tang Rong to come back after finishing them. The dragon fruit little snow leopard would be waiting here for him.
…
After Tang Rong left, Tang Yinsheng suddenly said to the bodyguard nearby, “Bring me a wheelchair. I want to go out for a stroll.”
The bodyguard obediently did as told. As long as he did not have to keep eating dragon fruit, he was willing to do anything.
The old master’s health still allowed him to sit in a wheelchair and go out for a little stroll. A bit of relaxation was actually good for his health, as long as he did not get too tired. There was also an open-air little garden on the top floor, a perfect place to relax.
A few minutes later, Tang Yinsheng rolled out of his hospital room in the wheelchair full of vigor, holding the sheet with the little tiger drawing, and began knocking on the doors of the old acquaintances nearby one by one with a face full of pride.
“My little grandson drew this—pretty, isn’t it?”
