Chapter 30
“How old are you already, and you still need me to feed you?” He Zhen said that, but he still picked up a spoon and chose the softest piece of clear-braised pork rib to feed Yu Chen. “Your surgery is the day after tomorrow. Are you scared?”
Chewing on the fragrant rib, Yu Chen gently shook his head. “Of course I’m not scared. Uncle said that once I close my eyes and open them again, my heart disease will be completely cured!”
He Zhen lowered his light brown eyes. His handsome, refined features carried a faint trace of worry. “Yu Chencheng, if someone has heart surgery, they won’t wake up with amnesia, right?” Recently, he had watched far too many trashy melodramas with no nutritional value whatsoever, so all kinds of strange ideas kept popping into his head. Those ideas reflected the thing he feared most, and they had kept him awake for days.
“Probably not.” Yu Chen gave an “ah” and opened his mouth. “Boss, I want shrimp. Remember to peel it for me.”
He Zhen tapped Yu Chen lightly on the forehead, his eyes carrying a teasing smile. “Yu Chencheng, what if you forget me?”
Yu Chen sipped his drink with a grin. “I won’t. Don’t worry. The doctors already gave up on the heart transplant plan. My own heart is still here, so I’ll never forget you.”
“I wasn’t worried at all.” He Zhen raised his brows and stressed the point. “If you forget me, then no one will buy you snacks and cake or tutor your homework ever again.”
Yu Chen curled his lips, his rosy cheeks deliberately scrunching up in mock fear. “Without Boss, how could I possibly go on living?”
These days, Yu Chen’s mouth had become more and more glib. Like right now, He Zhen could tell he was acting, but he still enjoyed it immensely.
Pinching the soft flesh on Yu Chen’s cheek, he cast him a sidelong glance. “Yu Chencheng, you’re such a little drama queen.”
Yu Chen kept acting cute. “Boss, my feelings for you are absolutely sincere! Heaven can bear witness!”
A smile quietly rose on He Zhen’s face. After feeding Yu Chen several light but tasty nutritious dishes, he began sorting out the key homework for him that day.
Ever since three years ago, when He Zhen had been drugged by his two uncles and Yu Chen had stayed by his side day and night until he lost four or five jin, the flesh Yu Chen had lost never came back. His weight now was exactly the same as it had been three years ago.
This left He Zhen endlessly puzzled.
He had clearly eaten so many delicious things, so why was his chubby Chencheng getting thinner and thinner?
Seeing how anxious he was, Li Huan had told him it was just a growth spurt. But He Zhen was not entirely convinced, and he constantly found chances to feed Yu Chen more good food. In the entire Hongwen No. 1 Primary School, Yu Chen’s meals were absolutely top-tier, and his desk drawer was stuffed year-round with healthy snacks.
“Open your math book to page twenty-one, Discussion Problem Three.” He Zhen organized the exercises Yu Chen was capable of doing. “You first pre—”
“To classmate He Zhen.” Yu Chen murmured, his watery eyes curving into a smile. “Boss, you got a pink letter.”
He Zhen’s expression turned indifferent. He reached out to take the envelope back, but Yu Chen held it up high above his head, looking excited. “Boss, what is this?”
“You’re asking when you already know.” He Zhen spread out the math exercises and pointed at the key problem with his fountain pen. “Yu Chencheng, we’re studying. Throw it away.”
“Is this a love letter?” Yu Chen was not distracted at all by He Zhen’s deliberate change of subject. He held the letter and examined it from side to side. He was not unfamiliar with love letters. The tall and handsome boys in his class often received confession letters from girls in other classes, especially Li Ye, who got them almost every day.
But this seemed to be the first love letter He Zhen had ever received.
Yu Chen had always been curious. His boss was gentle, had a good temper, and had won city-level gold medals in both Olympiad math and fencing. He was practically an all-around genius. So why was he not as popular as Li Ye?
When he told Xiao Yu his thoughts, Xiao Yu had only replied with one sentence: “Are you sure you’re talking about He Zhen?”
Yu Chen had puffed out his cheeks, still feeling that his own boss was the most perfect of all.
“Yes, it’s a love letter. It was probably slipped into one of my books.” He Zhen snatched the letter back and tossed it casually into the trash can. “Yu Chencheng, focus. Do you still want to be in the same class as me in middle school or not?”
The moment Yu Chen heard that, his expression turned solemn. “I do!”
The reason he worked so hard at tutoring was not just because he did not want to fall behind. There was another, even more important reason. Hongwen Middle School was a key school in the city. The children there were not only from wealthy families, but also academically outstanding. Many of them had already begun doing project research in primary school, developing their innovative thinking early, then focusing on research-based projects in middle school to prepare for studying abroad or early admissions to top universities.
Hongwen Middle School divided its students into advanced classes and regular classes. With He Zhen’s outstanding academic record, getting into an advanced class would be no problem at all. Yu Chen ranked near the top of his own class, but when compared across the entire grade, his academic results were a little weaker. In several grade-wide rankings, he had placed around fiftieth, just about five spots short of qualifying for an advanced class.
Actually, Yu Chen did not need to work this hard. Given Old Master He’s relationship with the school, all it would take was a word to the principal and Yu Chen could enter the key class with ease.
But He Zhen did not want Yu Chen to be gossiped about behind his back by the other students. Yu Chen usually seemed carefree, but deep down he was rather fragile, and other people’s judgments could easily affect his mood.
So starting from fifth grade, He Zhen had begun tutoring Yu Chen like crazy. He ended up tutoring not just Yu Chen but also Fang Jingrao, Xiao Yu, and He Zhi’an from their little gang. He Zhen carried all four of them every day, exhausting himself so much that at night, once he held Yu Chen, who was still engrossed in reading novels, he would immediately fall asleep.
“If you want that, then hurry up and study.” He Zhen pulled a folding ruler out of his backpack and flicked it open lightly. “If you get questions wrong, your palm will get smacked.”
Yu Chen instantly shrank his head back in fear, his eyes filling with pitiful misery as if He Zhen had really hit him already.
“Little drama queen.” He Zhen pinched Yu Chen’s small ear firmly, his gaze landing on the somewhat loose light-brown sweater Yu Chen was wearing. A hint of suspicion entered his eyes. “When did you buy those clothes?”
A trace of guilt flickered through Yu Chen’s lively brows and eyes. “They’re yours.”
He Zhen pinched his cheek again, pretending to look fierce, exactly like some domineering young master bullying his little servant. “Why are you secretly wearing my clothes again?”
Yu Chen said, “Your clothes are comfortable. Chencheng has never worn anything this nice—”
He Zhen covered his mouth mercilessly. “Read.”
Yu Chen’s eyelashes trembled, then he deliberately sucked hard on He Zhen’s palm. He Zhen went pale with shock and knocked him on the head with the fountain pen in exasperation.
Yu Chen secretly curled his lips, looking exactly like a kitten who had just stolen dried fish. He was certain He Zhen would never really hit him, and he even raised his brows smugly.
At eight in the evening, after finishing his homework, Yu Chen looked as though all the strength had been drained from his body. He flopped onto the bed like a little salted fish.
Li Huan had gone to a neighboring city on business that day and could not look after Yu Chen that night. So He Zhen had no choice but to shoulder the duties of both father and mother. After serving Yu Chen through his bath, he even had to dry his hair for him. He personally handled everything, even putting oil on him.
Taking advantage of being sick, Yu Chen cheerfully bullied He Zhen to his heart’s content. He had barely lain quietly in bed for a moment before he began urging He Zhen to read him Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He Zhen hurriedly finished drying his own hair, climbed into Yu Chen’s bed, forced himself to stay alert, and started explaining from page 123, where Cao Pi took Lady Zhen amid the chaos.
Just then, the doctor on duty came by with the medical team to check on the patients. Seeing Yu Chen lying drowsily against He Zhen’s arm, they could not help teasing, “Chencheng and Young Master He really are close. Closer than real brothers.”
The nurse beside them joked, “If this were childhood sweethearts, they might as well get engaged once they grow up.”
Yu Chen was already too sleepy to keep his eyes open, so naturally he did not hear any of the teasing. But He Zhen was different. His clear eyes widened slightly as he quietly waited for the doctors to record Yu Chen’s physical data. He observed the nurse who had just made the joke and rested his chin on his hand thoughtfully.
“Is Chencheng’s father not here today?” the doctor asked.
He Zhen answered for Yu Chen, “Uncle had something important to do. He’ll be back tomorrow.”
The doctor nodded. “You two should sleep early. No staying up late.”
Yu Chen obediently nodded, though he was secretly wondering how long he could stall before going to bathe.
After leaving the hospital room, the doctors were still discussing the topic from before.
“I don’t know if you heard, but same-sex marriage seems like it might become legal,” they whispered among themselves. “The only question is whether people will dare to go public.”
“How much longer do you think it’ll take? Probably another four or five years.”
At night, Yu Chen licked his dry lips and craned his slender neck around in search of water. The autumn night was chilly enough to make one shiver, and curled up in He Zhen’s arms, he felt far too comfortable. He had absolutely no desire to move.
He Zhen slept lightly. Sensing the person in his arms wriggling like a little snake, he slowly opened his eyes. “Yu Chencheng?”
Yu Chen mumbled, “Boss, thirsty.”
He Zhen propped himself up, carefully tucking the blanket around Yu Chen before getting out of bed so he would not catch cold. Yu Chen was currently in the pre-surgery stage, and it would be best if he did not get sick.
Very soon, a cup of warm water was brought over.
Wrapped in the soft silk quilt, Yu Chen gulped down a great deal of it. Maybe because he really was thirsty, the water He Zhen had poured for him tasted strangely sweet, so sweet he could not get enough.
The faint moonlight spilling through the gap in the curtains traced out the contours of Yu Chen’s features, making him seem soft all over, like a luminous pearl—beautiful and gentle.
A strange sense of accomplishment suddenly rose in He Zhen’s chest.
He had watched his chubby Chencheng grow prettier and prettier with his own eyes.
And half of that was his achievement.
He had raised his chubby baby very well.
He Zhen reached out and pinched Yu Chen’s ear, then held him again and went back to sleep after feeding him water.
“Boss.” Half-asleep, Yu Chen suddenly asked, “Do I have to start calling Uncle ‘Dad’ now?”
He Zhen pulled him closer. “Do you want to?”
Yu Chen’s head was buried under the blanket, and his voice came out muffled. “Mm.”
“Then call him that.” He Zhen thought that was fine.
The more they talked, the more awake Yu Chen became. He started babbling on and on about his illness. By the end, his cheek was resting against He Zhen’s wrist. “Boss, the doctor said the success rate of the surgery is seventy percent. If it fails, does that mean we won’t be able to see each other again?”
This was exactly the subject He Zhen had always refused to bring up. His fingers curled slightly as he repeated the answers he had searched up online countless times. “Every surgery has risks. The chief surgeon doing yours is very experienced. You’ll just sleep, wake up, and everything will be fine.”
Yu Chen pouted. “Alright then. Remember to wait for me.”
Brushing the side of his face against Yu Chen’s soft hair, breathing in the fresh scent of body wash, He Zhen murmured, “I’ll wait for you.”
The next day, when He Zhen returned to school, he ran into Xiao Yu at the entrance. Xiao Yu was holding a sandwich and asked, “Did you eat breakfast yet? I can share half with you.”
He Zhen shook his head. “Thanks. I already ate at the hospital.”
Xiao Yu was the kind of person who could never keep things to himself. With his hands behind his back, he followed after He Zhen. “He Zhen, did the study committee member from the next class confess to you?”
“Where did you hear that?”
“It’s all over the grade group chat.”
“Group chat? Why don’t I have it?”
“You’d have to be willing to join first! The class monitors from a few classes made it together. We heard about it because the study committee member’s best friend secretly told us.”
He Zhen had never opened that love letter, so he had no idea who had written it. “No. Stop spreading rumors.”
Xiao Yu said, “Huh? Then she was really talking nonsense.”
He Zhen paused, not telling Xiao Yu that he had thrown the letter away. Though he was not particularly emotionally perceptive with most people, he still knew that this sort of thing required protecting the other person’s dignity. It was a matter of upbringing.
Perhaps that girl had not wanted anyone else to know about it either, and it had only been made public against her wishes.
“So don’t mention it again,” He Zhen said as he and Xiao Yu walked into the classroom one after the other.
He Zhi’an and Fang Jingrao were eating jianbing and asked, “Brother Zhen, how’s Chencheng? Is he having surgery soon?”
As He Zhi’an got older, he simply could not bring himself to keep calling He Zhen “Great Gang Leader.” But since he was technically He Zhen’s older cousin, if he wanted to call him “brother,” this was the only way.
“Mm. The day after tomorrow.”
Fang Jingrao hurriedly asked, “Then can we go see Chencheng together tomorrow?”
After thinking briefly, He Zhen replied, “I’ll discuss it with Uncle.”
For the first time in his life, Fang Jingrao was eating a jianbing this delicious. With his cheeks full, he mumbled, “Okay. If we can, after school tomorrow we’ll go buy Chencheng some snacks together.”
He Zhi’an chimed in, “Chencheng will definitely be really happy.”
He Zhen nodded quietly and took out his textbooks in an orderly manner, ready for class.
Xiao Yu looked at the empty seat beside He Zhen and realized that ever since Yu Chen had taken leave, He Zhen seemed unable to muster enthusiasm for anything. Even in PE, which he usually loved most, he just sat alone working on Olympiad math.
He leaned closer. “Hey, He Zhen.”
He Zhen looked up. “Hm?”
Xiao Yu hesitated. “What kind of girl do you like?”
That topic instantly drew over the other two little gossips as well.
Looking at He Zhi’an’s eager expression, He Zhen raised a brow. “Are you guys really that bored?”
Rubbing his chin, Xiao Yu analyzed seriously, “My guess is, you like girls with the same personality as Yu Chencheng!”
The moment he heard the words “Yu Chencheng,” displeasure clearly entered He Zhen’s handsome features. Even someone as proud and prickly as Xiao Yu immediately shut his mouth and pretended he had said nothing.
Aside from himself, He Zhen would not allow anyone to call Yu Chen that.
Sometimes Xiao Yu truly could not understand it. Wasn’t it just a form of address? Did it really warrant making such a big fuss?
“Isn’t that right?” Xiao Yu rubbed his nose and kept asking.
He Zhen pressed his lips together. “The teachers don’t allow puppy love.”
Hongwen Primary School was extremely strict about early romance. If they found out, the lighter punishment was calling in parents; the heavier punishment was making the students read a self-criticism aloud in public.
Xiao Yu clicked his tongue and laughed at him. “If you broke the rules, the principal definitely wouldn’t punish you too harshly.”
Now that they were already ten-year-old children, their understanding of power and money far exceeded that of ordinary kids, thanks to their family environments. Their parents had all warned them: in school, they could offend anyone they wanted—except He Zhen.
“I’ve never thought about that question.” He Zhen pointed to the homeroom teacher standing right behind Xiao Yu and smiled faintly. “I only want to study hard.”
Xiao Yu turned around, saw the teacher, and immediately fell silent in terror.
He Zhen was so disloyal. He had not even warned him!
The homeroom teacher smiled warmly at Xiao Yu. “Encouraging your classmate to fall in love early? Copy yesterday’s new poem ten times.”
Xiao Yu almost cried. He glared at He Zhen with great resentment.
He Zhen lifted his brows, leisurely twirling his fountain pen as he seriously considered Xiao Yu’s question.
He really had never thought about it. His heart was already filled to the brim with Yu Chencheng every single day, and the only things that worried him were whether Yu Chen had eaten enough and whether anyone had bullied him. He cared about nothing else.
Having figured that out, he lowered his head and continued previewing the new lesson. He planned to organize Yu Chen’s wrong-answer notebook during the long break so Yu Chen could work on it that night.
When He Zhen returned to the hospital that evening, the moment he entered, he noticed Yu Chen sneaking around trying to hide something. Pretending not to see, he used arranging the flowers in the vase as an excuse and secretly observed the movement behind him through the transparent glass window.
Yu Chen seemed to be holding something pale pink in his hand. He Zhen immediately guessed what it was. He turned around at once and caught Yu Chen red-handed just as he was about to hide the love letter in the drawer.
“Yu! Chen! Cheng!” He Zhen stared down at him. “Give it to me.”
Knowing he had done something wrong, Yu Chen guiltily handed it over, then slowly retreated into the blanket and curled up like a little turtle.
He Zhen frowned. “Are you really that curious about what’s written inside?”
“Mm…” Yu Chen was simply inexperienced. He genuinely just wanted to admire the contents of a love letter. After all, in five years of primary school, he had never received even one. Once he had told He Zhen what was on his mind, he drooped his head. “Boss! Does nobody like me? Otherwise why don’t I ever get any love letters?”
He Zhen folded his arms. “Are you very regretful about that?”
Yu Chen replied, “Yes. I want one too.”
At once, He Zhen thought of another implication. “Yu Chencheng, do you want to leave me behind and go date someone?”
Right now he felt very upset. Yu Chen actually wanted to have a relationship with someone else that was the best in the whole world.
“Huh? Leave you behind?” Yu Chen had never meant that and hurriedly explained, “I just hoped I might seem a little more charming. I never wanted to secretly date behind your back, Boss!”
He Zhen gave a cold snort. “If you’re not dating behind my back, then that means you want to date openly?”
Yu Chen became so flustered he could hardly speak. Lowering his damp eyes, he explained, “No, not that. I just want to live happily with Boss forever and grow into two little old men together.”
Ten-year-old He Zhen was no longer nearly as easy to fool as he had been when he was younger.
He packed up his schoolbag and said coolly, “Uncle will be here soon. I’m going home first.”
“Boss! Boss, don’t go!” Yu Chen made a big show of crying without shedding real tears, his little shoulders shaking as he acted spoiled like usual. He truly did not know what he had done to upset He Zhen so much over this matter.
“Yu Chencheng, if you’re going to act, at least make it look convincing next time.” Yu Chen had spent half the time pretending to panic while his butt remained planted firmly on the bed, without the slightest intention of getting down.
He Zhen’s face went stern. “Do your homework yourself.”
This time Yu Chen really panicked. Barefoot, he jumped off the bed and ran to He Zhen in three quick steps, anxiously reaching for his neck. Those bright, clear eyes of his looked at He Zhen in fear, mixed with a touch of reluctance, completely throwing He Zhen’s resolute heart into chaos.
He Zhen lowered his head and looked at Yu Chen’s bare feet, then, just like when they were little, gently lifted him up. Yu Chen’s legs immediately wrapped around He Zhen’s waist like a nimble little monkey clinging to him.
His long black brows knitted slightly. “Boss, I won’t date anyone, okay? Don’t ignore me.”
“Dating?” Li Huan, who had just walked in, happened to hear their whispered conversation and smiled in confusion. “Who’s dating? Primary school students aren’t allowed to date.”
Yu Chen buried his chin against He Zhen’s chest, hanging from him like a koala.
“No one’s dating.” His clear voice carried a trace of grievance. “I was making a promise to Boss not to date.”
Yu Chen’s soft, tender face was slightly flushed, and because he had been so anxious, a layer of sweat had appeared on his back.
Li Huan laughed at him. “Chencheng, how old are you already and you still need Xiao Zhen to carry you?”
Yu Chen pursed his lips and kept nestling against He Zhen’s chest in a spoiled manner.
He Zhen was much stronger now, and holding Yu Chen was nowhere near as hard as it had been when they were younger. He took out the wrong-answer notebook again and said with feigned sternness, “Hurry up and do it. If you don’t finish, I’ll spank your butt.”
Yu Chen immediately became obedient as a little quail. “Boss, I’ll do it right away.”
Usually Yu Chen dragged his feet forever over homework. Today the sun had practically risen in the west.
Li Huan only smiled and said nothing. These days Yu Chen had become more and more lawless. Sometimes Li Huan could not bear to scold him, so He Zhen would do it instead. Every time He Zhen put on a stern face, Yu Chen behaved perfectly. If He Zhen told him to go east, he would not dare go west.
After tutoring Yu Chen’s homework, He Zhen discussed with Li Huan the matter of Xiao Yu and the others coming to visit. Yu Chen, who was writing homework, secretly pricked up his ears. When he heard that Xiao Yu and the others were coming, he was delighted.
The next evening, Xiao Yu and the others arrived as promised. Looking at the huge pile of snacks, Yu Chen held them shyly in his arms and said politely, “You came already, why did you bring snacks too?”
Xiao Yu deliberately exposed his true feelings and pretended he was going to take them back. “Then we’ll just carry them home and divide them up ourselves.”
Yu Chen hurriedly protected his food. “No! These are for the patient!”
Li Huan cut fruit for the children and brought it over. “Chencheng is good in every way—except that he’s such a little glutton.”
Knowing Yu Chen was worried Xiao Yu might really snatch the snacks away, He Zhen deliberately helped him stuff them into the cabinet and did not forget to snap at Xiao Yu as well. “Once snacks enter the hospital room, they belong to us.”
Hands on his hips, Xiao Yu stuck out his tongue angrily at He Zhen.
That night, Yu Chen’s mood was especially relaxed. He was not anxious at all about the surgery the next day. The only thing making him unhappy was that he had to fast before the operation, and even when he went to sleep, his little round face was still puffed up in displeasure.
After coaxing Yu Chen to sleep, He Zhen stayed awake the entire night. Li Huan suffered from the same sleeplessness. He had practically kept watch beside the two children’s bed all night long without closing his eyes once.
The next day was the weekend. At eight in the morning, the surgery gurney slowly arrived. Yu Chen moved like a little loach, stripping off his clothes in a flash. His bright eyes were sparkling with a smile. “I left presents for you under my pillow. Remember to check them.”
Li Huan and He Zhen both looked over. After Yu Chen was wheeled into the operating room, they moved the pillow aside.
Underneath were two letters.
One was addressed, “To My Dearest Dad.”
The other was addressed, “To My Dearest Boss.”
Before entering the operating room, little Yu Chen had racked his brains and used up all the literary talent of his entire life to write two confession letters powerful enough to shake heaven and move ghosts.
The reason he had tried to steal the love letter He Zhen received earlier was simply because he wanted to study someone else’s writing style.
Outside the operating room, Li Huan read his letter and cried so hard he could barely breathe.
In his heart, Li Huan kept thinking: This child, honestly. Why does this letter sound so much like a last letter before death?
He Zhen’s lips were pale. He kept the letter paper clenched tightly in his palm, never opening it. He wanted to wait until Yu Chen came out and read it together with him.
Time passed little by little.
Yu Chen’s surgery had already been going on for eight hours. During that time, the doctor came out once to give Li Huan a general update and told him everything was going very smoothly, so there was no need to worry.
He Zhen had not touched a bite of his lunch.
With lowered lashes, he had wanted to use Olympiad math problems to steady his emotions, but he could not focus on a single word.
His mind was almost entirely full of Yu Chen.
Before he realized it, they had already known each other for six years.
More time passed, and then suddenly, the operating room light went out. He Zhen immediately stood up and ran toward the door.
A surgery gurney was pushed out.
Yu Chen was wearing an oxygen mask, with many tubes inserted into his body.
Li Huan’s eyes stung terribly. With trembling hands, he carefully stroked Yu Chen’s hair and gently pressed his forehead against his.
He Zhen wiped the corner of his eye and comforted him. “Uncle, Chencheng is fine, don’t cry. If he hears you, he’ll worry.”
Li Huan nodded, choking up, and followed the medical staff into the ICU with his exhausted body.
The night grew deeper and deeper.
Ever since sitting in the ICU, He Zhen had not taken his eyes off Yu Chen for a single moment.
Li Huan had not slept at all the night before. He Zhen was afraid his body would give out, and only after a long time of persuading him together with the doctor did Li Huan finally agree to get a little sleep.
The doctor who stayed with He Zhen to keep watch saw that he was still forcing himself to stay awake and asked gently, “Young Master He, you should go rest too.”
“I’m not sleepy.” He Zhen was still gripping the letter in his hand, the envelope now wrinkled and crumpled from how hard he had held it. “I want to wait for him to wake up.”
The doctor reminded him, “Take care of your health too.”
He Zhen did not know how long he waited. Yu Chen merely shifted the finger clipped by the monitoring device, his little brows tightening slightly, but there was not much other reaction.
He Zhen stood up and went to Yu Chen’s bedside. He wanted to touch him, but was afraid of bumping the instruments and affecting his recovery.
He murmured, “Doctor, is he in a lot of pain?”
The doctor answered honestly, “Yes. But it’ll get better soon.”
He Zhen lowered his eyes, his shoulders trembling faintly, and a few scorching tears dropped onto the bedsheet.
Then suddenly—
In a hoarse, muffled voice, Yu Chen called out something. The doctor immediately bent close to his mouth. “What is it? Where do you feel uncomfortable?”
Yu Chen’s voice was weak. “Boss…”
The doctor frowned. “Boss?”
“He’s calling me! He’s calling me!” He Zhen’s reddened eyes widened as he leaned toward Yu Chen. “Yu Chencheng, I’m here.”
His voice trembled with emotion, full of surprise, worry, and even more than that, anticipation. “I’m here. What do you want to tell me?”
Yu Chen struggled to open his weary eyes. Through the oxygen mask, his broken, intermittent voice was hard to hear clearly.
Anxious, He Zhen leaned even closer. “Yu Chencheng!”
With effort, Yu Chen said, “Bos…s!”
He Zhen answered at once, “Mm! Mm!”
This time, He Zhen was even more certain that Yu Chen had been looking for him.
He was the first person Yu Chen looked for after waking up.
That meant he must be very, very important in Yu Chen’s heart!
His eyes shone with eager expectation. “I’m listening, Yu Chencheng.”
Yu Chen’s breathing was heavy. “I want cola.”
“Cold cola…”
