Chapter 22: A Sister-in-Law’s Duty
Lindsay hurried into Yu Mian’s bedroom with the medicine and saw the two brothers sitting in silence.
Yu Mian’s face was a little pale. He sat expressionlessly on the sofa.
Elaine stood by the floor-to-ceiling window. He was wearing casual clothes, so he had probably just come over from Shi Sheng’s place.
“Yumi, take some medicine first.” Lindsay sighed inwardly and crouched down in front of Yu Mian. “This has a calming effect. It’ll prevent another episode tonight.”
Yu Mian usually listened to his foster brother, so he tilted his head back and drank the medicine in one gulp.
Seeing that neither of his brothers spoke, he set the empty tube down hard and repeated what he had said earlier. “Big Brother, I want to marry the crown prince.”
Elaine’s attitude was still calm. “Give me a reason.”
“He’s suitable,” Yu Mian said. “Actually, Ah-Zhao and I talked about this before. He doesn’t have an Omega he likes, and he doesn’t want to mark anyone. Isn’t that just perfect for me? It saves a lot of trouble and doesn’t harm anyone else.”
Seeing Elaine remain silent, he paused, then said in a relaxed tone, “Anyway, even if I don’t get married now, sooner or later that old emperor will casually assign me to some Alpha family. Compared to that, wouldn’t he feel more at ease if I married into the imperial family?”
Lindsay frowned and looked at Elaine.
In this family, perhaps only Elaine, as Marshal, knew the emperor’s true attitude toward the Carlos family.
Yu Mian was thinking too simply.
Half of Elaine’s side profile was hidden in shadow, and the moonlight made his figure look very cold.
Lindsay could not stand the silence, so he could only advise, “But what about yourself? Yumi, you should marry an Alpha you like.”
“I quite like Ah-Zhao,” Yu Mian said indifferently, leaning back into the sofa. “He’s gentle, perfect, and we’re familiar with each other.”
“Then does he like you?” Lindsay asked softly.
Yu Mian became a little impatient. “Brother, can you stop being naive? I’m a Carlos! Is liking someone that important? Even if there is love, is it useful?”
“Look at the blood in my body, and the way I couldn’t even control myself just now. Am I supposed to combine with some Alpha who knows nothing just because of so-called love, then give birth to another monster just like us?”
He raised his head and looked stubbornly at Elaine by the window.
“That reason does not stand,” Elaine finally said after a long while.
Yu Mian was about to flare up. Lindsay quickly said, “That’s right, Yumi. You’re still young. You can wait a few more years. In a few years, your illness might be cured…”
“How?” Yu Mian asked sharply. “This is a curse, not an illness! If it could be cured, has Big Brother been cured? Has Izel been cured?!”
He could not help standing up, raising his head and stubbornly asking Elaine, “If it can be cured, then what are you doing, Big Brother? You don’t even dare to mark an Omega from a political marriage!”
The moment he met Elaine’s gaze, Yu Mian’s words abruptly stopped.
He had always been afraid of this eldest brother.
But Elaine only looked at Yu Mian calmly. “Rest early. We’ll discuss this later.”
Lindsay pulled Yu Mian back and softly coaxed him into the inner bedroom.
The door slammed shut in front of him. Before Lindsay could sigh, he quickly turned and caught up with Elaine.
“Family Head, Yumi was only…”
“I know,” Elaine said lightly. “I will consider this matter.”
Lindsay froze. “But His Majesty won’t agree…”
Elaine did not speak.
Lindsay suddenly felt a little bitter.
He could not continue this topic, so he could only ask, “Have you been all right lately? Any signs of losing control?”
“I’m fine,” Elaine only said. But when he reached the door of a room, his footsteps paused. He turned and pushed the door open. “Bring some more medicine. I’ll wait for you here.”
Lindsay quickly turned and left.
He was still worried. Given the current situation, the present version of the medicine was already becoming less effective.
Moonlight spilled coldly over the seemingly endless corridor.
This house had been cold and quiet for far too long. After Yu Mian’s mother passed away, even the luxurious Carlos estate had become a deathly cage.
Lindsay’s heart was heavy. Just as he was about to cross the garden, he suddenly heard a mechanical voice.
“Hello, Lindsay, little brother.”
His footsteps abruptly stopped, and he saw the Omega crouching beside the flowerbed.
He was even younger than Lindsay, yet he was using a strange mechanical voice to call him “little brother.”
“…Sister-in-law, what are you doing here?”
Shi Sheng’s face turned red at the way Lindsay addressed him, and he pressed the voice device rapidly.
“Elaine, came, to, find, Yumi. I’m, fine. Looking, at, flowers.”
He smiled at Lindsay. “Is, Elaine, finished, being, busy?”
Lindsay was silent for a while, then lied. “Please go back and rest first. The Family Head… is still talking with Yumi.”
Shi Sheng silently gave an “ah.” “Is, it, a, serious, problem?”
“Mm… you could say that.” It was not very convenient for Lindsay to tell the truth, and facing Shi Sheng’s sincere eyes made him feel a little embarrassed. “It’s fine. Don’t worry. Yumi has his own thoughts. It’s just that no one dares go against the Family Head’s opinion.”
Shi Sheng tilted his head and tried to understand for a while, then shook his head and earnestly pressed the voice device.
“Then, please, persuade, Yumi. Don’t, argue.”
He looked up at Lindsay, then lowered his head again. “Elaine, must, be, doing, it, for, his, own, good.”
A strange feeling rose in Lindsay’s heart.
If these words were told to Yu Mian, he definitely would not believe them.
Whether it was Lindsay himself, or Yu Mian and Izel as Elaine’s actual younger brothers, none of them had ever directly received Elaine’s concern.
All these years, only Lindsay knew why Elaine supported him in doing genetic research.
If it were not for Yu Mian, Elaine would not have needed to bear so much pressure from the imperial family.
But no one except Lindsay knew any of this.
The Empire’s Thanatos was actually a qualified older brother all along. Who would believe it if said aloud?
He opened his mouth. After a long while, he shook his head and smiled. “Aren’t you afraid? Of a place like this?”
Shi Sheng blinked, then lowered his head and searched through his voice device for a long time.
Lindsay watched in confusion as an emoji popped up in midair with the words “Superman is here!”
Then he saw Shi Sheng smile with curved eyes and say in a mechanical voice, “Why, should, I, be, afraid?”
“This, is, Elaine’s, home.”
Lindsay froze for a long time.
Shi Sheng crouched in place and looked at the flowers for a while. He did not notice Lindsay leaving, then hurrying past behind him again.
After an unknown amount of time, a low voice fell behind him.
“What are you looking at?”
Shi Sheng suddenly turned around and stood up. He lost his balance, but Elaine reacted quickly and reached out to steady him.
“You, are, finished.” Shi Sheng held up his voice device. “Go, back?”
Elaine reached out and brushed away a leaf stuck to Shi Sheng’s shoulder. “Mm.”
The two of them stepped through the moonlight and walked back. Shi Sheng carefully raised his head to look at Elaine’s side profile, then reached out and tugged his sleeve.
“Did, you, argue, with, Yumi?”
Elaine curved his lips very faintly. “No. It doesn’t count as arguing.”
Shi Sheng tilted his head and looked at him for a while, but did not ask further.
After returning to their bedroom, he walked straight to the table and moved the beautiful vases one by one to the windowsill.
The Empire’s technology was advanced. There were already very mature methods to keep fresh flowers preserved for a long time. All the flowers Elaine had brought back recently had been carefully saved by Shi Sheng.
Elaine leaned to the side and watched Shi Sheng’s busy figure.
Every now and then, Shi Sheng turned back to look at Elaine, his eyes darting around.
Elaine asked, “Do you have something to say?”
Knowing that he could not hide anything from the sharp Alpha, Shi Sheng slowly walked up to Elaine, opened his bracelet, and showed him a screen.
It was the military academy’s unified school opening notice. The date was only a few days away.
Shi Sheng felt very guilty. In the current situation, he could only brace himself and attend school in his brother’s place.
But then he heard Elaine ask, “Understood. Do you want me to help you request leave?”
Shi Sheng raised his head in surprise.
[Is Elaine an angel? Otherwise, why does he have six huge wings behind him?]
A trace of amusement flashed through Elaine’s eyes. “Your body hasn’t fully recovered yet. Do you want to take leave for a period of time?”
Shi Sheng quickly nodded.
“All right,” Elaine said. “Rest early.”
Shi Sheng thought for a moment, then asked Elaine with the voice device, “The, family’s, library. Can, I, go, inside?”
Elaine extended his hand toward him. “Come here.”
Shi Sheng blinked in confusion.
Elaine explained gently, “I’ll give you access.”
Shi Sheng quickly handed his hand over and watched Elaine operate his bracelet a few times.
“From now on, you may go anywhere in the house,” Elaine said. “I’ve also shared my electronic library access with you. I hope it can help.”
Shi Sheng hurriedly waved his hands and feet to thank him.
In the Empire, the higher one’s position, the greater access one had to electronic libraries. With Elaine’s status, there was basically no problem with whatever book Shi Sheng wanted to read.
He could not take leave from the military academy forever. He had to seize the time to study his brother’s courses properly and try to delay being exposed.
Shi Sheng was extremely happy and gave Elaine a big smile.
Actually, on the way back, he had already noticed that Elaine seemed unhappy, most likely because of Yu Mian.
He did not want Elaine to be unhappy, so Shi Sheng decided to do something to repay Elaine for being so good to him during this time.
Besides, when older and younger brothers lived together, small conflicts were unavoidable. At times like this, he, as the sister-in-law, had to play his role!
Shi Sheng laughed hehe in his heart and quietly cheered himself on.
Watching the Omega secretly amuse himself over who knew what, Elaine’s previously tense mood gradually eased.
He discovered that Shi Sheng was truly easy to satisfy and easy to make happy.
On the day of the wedding, when Elaine had returned from the battlefield, he had actually thought about many things.
Any Omega forced to marry into the Carlos family would probably be miserable.
So he had learned to do whatever he could, hoping to ease Shi Sheng’s fear after coming to this cursed family.
But unexpectedly, Shi Sheng seemed fairly satisfied with his current life.
That was good too. Being easily satisfied was a good thing. At least Elaine could feel slightly more at ease about Shi Sheng’s future life.
Elaine lowered his eyes and, while Shi Sheng was not paying attention, hid his right hand behind his back after it uncontrollably changed shape.
