Yumi’s Anomaly

Chapter 21: Yumi’s Anomaly

Shi Sheng couldn’t help but imagine certain scenes in his mind.

On such an ordinary evening, the Alpha, who was supposed to be fully occupied with endless military affairs, had actually paused his hurried steps just to pick out a small bouquet of roses for his Omega back home. Even if this was merely an arranged marriage taken under a false identity, Shi Sheng felt a rush of happiness at this moment.

Still, he carefully sat up, cradling the roses to the tip of his nose to take a gentle sniff.

“Thank, you. I, like, it, very, much.” For the first time, he felt that the mechanical voice simply could not express his emotions.

Elaine looked at Shi Sheng’s profile. “Merico told me that you didn’t seem to want to see that cousin of yours. So, I took it upon myself to ask him not to come again.”

Seeing Shi Sheng look up at him, Elaine paused for a brief moment before continuing, “If you feel that was inappropriate, I can…”

Before his voice could even fade, his palm was covered by a pair of warm hands.

He had noticed before that because Shi Sheng could not express himself with his voice in time, he seemed quite accustomed to holding other people’s hands.

He lowered his gaze and, sure enough, saw Shi Sheng shaking his head earnestly before reaching for his voice device again.

“Not, inappropriate.”

After a thought, a small sticker of a cat blowing a kiss popped up.

“Merico, said, you said, my, opinion, matters.”

“Thank, you.”

Elaine didn’t realize that the corners of his own lips had turned upward.

Looking into Shi Sheng’s bright eyes, he remembered something, reached for his jacket nearby, took an item out, and presented it to Shi Sheng.

Shi Sheng looked down, his eyes widening in astonishment.

Lying in Elaine’s hand was the anti-bite collar he had given to Shi Sheng, except it was now broken into several pieces.

“It has already been wiped clean,” Elaine said softly. “I didn’t know if you would still want it, but I figured you might look for it once you woke up, so I sent someone back to the palace to retrieve it.”

This time, Shi Sheng was truly caught off guard.

How did Elaine know he had been thinking about this collar earlier?

He accepted it carefully and said earnestly through the voice device, “Want, it. Because, it is, a gift, Elaine, gave, me.”

Elaine looked at him for a moment, his tone gentle. “It can’t be worn anymore. Let’s go pick a new one another day.”

Shi Sheng’s eyes lit up. “Elaine, will you, come, with, me?”

“Mm,” Elaine said. “But only after your injuries heal.”

Shi Sheng nodded vigorously in a hurry.

Elaine fell silent for a brief moment again, changing the subject to ask, “Is your relationship with your family alright?”

Shi Sheng blinked, thinking Elaine was worried he might be homesick.

Although he cared deeply for his mother, he didn’t actually miss home all that much.

Even so, Shi Sheng nodded.

It wasn’t exactly a lie; his brother did have a very good relationship with the family.

Elaine went quiet for a moment upon hearing the answer, then quickly added, “Recovering from injuries can be boring. You can give Merico a list and have him invite your friends over to keep you company.”

The Alpha paused, his voice turning slightly cooler. “Of course, provided they are willing to come to Carlos.”

Shi Sheng hurriedly picked up his voice device. “No, need, to trouble, you. I, can, play, with, Yumi.”

He didn’t want to tell Elaine that he had spent too many years confined to the Shi family’s backyard, never having the chance to make any friends.

Elaine gently patted the top of Shi Sheng’s head. “Alright.”

Afterward, both of them lapsed into silence.

Elaine had never been a man of many words; at the military headquarters, no one ever heard him speak in long sentences.

In front of Shi Sheng, he was already displaying an unbelievable amount of patience.

Watching the Omega hold the flowers while his gaze darted around nervously, Elaine let out a soft laugh and pulled the flowers from Shi Sheng’s grasp.

“Sleep a little longer.”

But Shi Sheng didn’t want to sleep; he was incredibly reluctant to let go of this solitary time with Elaine.

In a flash of inspiration, he shrank back into the blanket, knitted his brows, and looked at Elaine with a pitiful expression.

“What’s wrong?” Elaine took the bait just as expected. “Does it hurt somewhere?”

Shi Sheng nodded aggrievedly, remaining silent to give off the impression that he was hurting all over.

Elaine picked up the medication log left by the doctor at the bedside. “You were given a painkiller two hours ago.”

Shi Sheng stared at him with wide, pleading eyes.

In the next second, his vision went dark as the Alpha’s slightly cool palm covered his eyes.

Following that, a dense wave of pheromones enveloped him once more.

In truth, Shi Sheng wasn’t in that much pain anymore. The previous soothing pheromones had been just right, so experiencing it again right now felt a bit…

Shi Sheng’s entire body grew flush. Sensing that his face must be completely red, he hurriedly pulled Elaine’s hand away and dived completely under the blanket.

Elaine was left uncharacteristically bewildered by the Omega’s sudden movement. “Are you feeling terribly uncomfortable? I’ll call the doctor over.”

The red head peeking slightly out from under the blanket shook violently.

Elaine chuckled quietly, tucking the blanket securely around Shi Sheng. “Rest up. Once you get better…”

He paused. “You can do anything you want in this house.”

During the first few days of his recovery, the pain from the wound was relatively severe, so Shi Sheng fell asleep every night under the comfort of Elaine’s pheromones.

He hadn’t even been marked by Elaine, yet he could be so easily soothed. Shi Sheng couldn’t help but think that perhaps that 100% compatibility rate belonged to him and Elaine.

It wasn’t his brother; it was he and Elaine who were such a perfect match.

This kept Shi Sheng in an excellent mood. Furthermore, despite how busy Elaine clearly was, he returned home very early every single day. He always carefully reviewed the records the doctor left in the room, asked Shi Sheng what he had done during the day, and spent time chatting with him.

He was already acting more like a model husband than the vast majority of Alphas.

Shi Sheng often found himself dazed, feeling as though he and Elaine were a pair of deeply in love partners.

Especially after hearing from Yumi an that Elaine had personally dealt with the forest guards who had neglected their duties at the ball.

Once he was able to walk around on his own, Shi Sheng carefully preserved all the flowers Elaine had brought home during this period. He even asked Merico for some plant seeds, planning to grow some other flowers.

In comparison, Yumi an was not nearly as happy.

These past few nights had been cloudless, with the moon hanging high in the night sky, which already left his condition in a poor state. After their communication that day, Lanris had gone off to busy himself with who-knows-what, only showing up late after a long delay.

When he arrived, it was already evening. A blazing sunset flooded the entire sky, filling Yumi an’s heart with an inexplicable, mounting irritation.

Lanris invited Yumi an out for a walk in the garden, but Yumi an couldn’t see what was so interesting about a garden he had already looked at for eighteen years.

“Do you have something to say or not?” He stopped in his tracks abruptly, suppressing the irritation in his chest. “If you have something to say, spit it out. Stop dragging your feet.”

Lanris’s expression shifted, but only for a fleeting moment.

A warm smile spread across his face as he reached into his jacket pocket and dropped to one knee right in front of Yumi an.

“Yumi.” Lanris held up the item in his hand, presenting it before Yumi an’s eyes.

Yumi an’s heart turned cold.

Lanris didn’t notice a thing. Yumi an had always been unpredictable in front of him anyway, so he didn’t care, maintaining his smile like someone checking off a task.

“Though it might be a bit sudden… please marry me.”

Yumi an stared coldly at the ring in his hand. “Why?”

Lanris was taken aback. “What do you mean why? Weren’t we going to get married eventually anyway?”

He started smiling again. “This is something we both already knew, isn’t it?”

“Says who?” Yumi an knit his brows, his voice freezing cold. “Your mother doesn’t even like Carlos.”

“That’s just my mother, it doesn’t represent my views or my family’s stance,” Lanris forced a smile.

Yumi an crossed his arms, staring blankly at the man in front of him.

He had grown up alongside Lanris since childhood. While he didn’t particularly love him, the Lan family knew the secrets of Carlos, so he hadn’t been opposed to marrying Lanris before.

At the very least, he had considered them friends.

But this person turned out exactly as Shi Sheng had predicted.

For the sake of another Omega, he had betrayed Yumi an.

“So, you yourself want to marry me too?” A mocking smile appeared on Yumi an’s face.

A bead of cold sweat broke out on Lanris’s temple. “Yes, Yumi.”

Yumi an nodded, suddenly flashing a brilliant, radiant smile. “But I don’t want to marry you.”

Lanris’s smile froze.

Yumi an felt that he was still being a bit too soft-hearted, actually wanting to give the man one last chance.

“Take this thing back, and I’ll act as if nothing ever happened.”

Lanris remained stiff for a moment before forcing another smile. “It’s fine, Yumi. You’re still young after all, we can talk about this in a few years.”

He stood up, acting as though nothing was amiss. “Want to go grab a drink?”

The taste of copper and blood spread inside Yumi an’s mouth.

He asked, “If I take that drink, will I still have the option to refuse?”

Lanris gasped. “W-what?”

The sky was on the verge of turning dark, and the fiery clouds pressed down on Yumi an like a final curse.

The blonde youth’s eyes flushed a vivid crimson, and a row of sharp, predatory fangs suddenly emerged from his soft lips.

“Lanris, you disgust me.”

Before Lanris could even process what was happening, Yumi an had pinned him to the ground in an instant, moving with the agility of a wild beast.

He was a reasonably well-built Alpha, yet he was pinned down completely by this petite Omega, with a dagger pressed squarely against his chest!

“I’ve been holding this back for a long time.” Yumi an’s eyes had turned entirely blood-red, his gaze unfocused, but his face carried a wild, vicious grin. “I wonder what your heart tastes like, Lanris?”

Lanris was scared out of his wits, only managing to scream for help after a long pause.

As he struggled, the sharp dagger looked ready to pierce straight through his chest—

“Yumi!”

Someone rushed over urgently, wrapping their arms tightly around Yumi an. “Calm down!”

Yumi an snapped his head around, baring his fangs fiercely at the newcomer.

His crimson vision made it difficult to recognize the person who had charged over—Lindsey, his adoptive older brother with whom he had always shared a decent relationship.

Lindsey frantically fished something out of his pocket and stuffed the pills into Yumi an’s mouth without a second thought, his arm getting slashed by the fangs in the process.

Turning around to find Lanris frozen in place, Lindsey felt a massive headache coming on. “Get the hell out of here, now!”

Lanris scrambled away obediently, while Lindsey used all his strength to hold back Yumi an, who still wanted to give chase.

“Calm down, Yumi. You are a human, calm down!”

After an unknown amount of time, the forced medication finally took effect. Yumi an’s fangs slowly retracted, returning to normal human teeth.

As his eye color gradually shifted back to lake blue, Yumi an stopped struggling, though his face remained entirely devoid of expression.

Feeling a pang of distress for him, Lindsey took off his coat and wrapped it around his younger brother. “Let’s go back to your room first.”

“Where is Big Brother?” Yumi an asked suddenly. “Has Big Brother returned yet? I want to see him.”

Before Lindsey could even answer, Yumi an looked directly into his eyes.

“Go tell him that I want to marry the Crown Prince. Tell him to find a way for me.”
