Chapter 20: Elaine’s Flowers 

“Where did all these pink little things come from?” Yu Mian awkwardly scratched his cheek. “Also, next time, don’t stand in front of me. You’re clearly so weak you could be blown over by the wind…”

Shi Sheng shook his head and pressed his voice device.

“Yumi, hurt. Elaine, will, be, sad.”

Yu Mian froze. He wanted to say that his big brother would never be sad. There was nothing in this world that could move that heart raised amid slaughter.

But then he remembered the image of Elaine holding the injured Shi Sheng, and for the first time, Yu Mian began to doubt himself.

Lanris’s anxious voice came from the other side. “Yumi, I’ve been calling you all night! Are you all right?”

The butler wiped his sweat and went out to bring the guests in.

Mother Shi came in with Ji Sui, rushing straight toward the bedside. “My child!”

Yu Mian stepped aside and said to Shi Sheng, “Since your mother is here, I’m leaving.”

After saying that, he nodded to Mother Shi and slowly wandered out.

Ji Sui listened to Yu Mian’s unusually easygoing tone in surprise, his heart growing complicated.

He had heard of this young devil’s great name before. Why did it seem like he got along fairly well with Shi Sheng?

Ji Sui froze. “We just arrived.”

Shi Sheng lowered his head and said nothing, his fingers rubbing against the soft blanket.

“And your brother…” Mother Shi paused, carefully glancing at the door. The butler had not returned. “We don’t even know where he is now, or whether he is doing well. Has he still not contacted you?”

Shi Sheng shook his head.

Mother Shi said, “How could he not even contact you? You two are blood brothers.”

She sighed. “What a mess this all is. If your brother had been there yesterday, he definitely wouldn’t have acted recklessly. At least he wouldn’t have gotten hurt.”

Seeing that Shi Sheng did not respond, she carefully took Shi Sheng’s hand and said earnestly, “Since things have already come to this, just focus on recovering. After the Shi family’s car drove away, Merico stood in place for a while, lowered his head, pulled up an audio recording, and sent it to Elaine.

After his mother left, Shi Sheng’s wound began to ache on and off.

Clearly, he had slept very peacefully last night, without feeling pain at all, but now it hurt so much that he felt awful.

Medical staff had been standing guard outside the room the whole time. Shi Sheng took some medicine, but there was still a faint pain. Still, he barely managed to fall asleep.

Shi Sheng reached out and felt around. His voice device was right beside his pillow. “You, are, back.”

Elaine’s military coat was draped over a chair. Inside, he was only wearing a black shirt. It looked like after returning, he had not even had time to change clothes.

“Is there anywhere uncomfortable?” He touched the back of his hand to Shi Sheng’s forehead. Because he had deliberately softened his voice, it sounded gentler than usual. “When I came back, I saw you were in pain, so I released a little more pheromone.”

Shi Sheng shook his head, his gaze curiously falling on the table nearby.

There was a small bunch of roses tied with a pale ribbon. The full petals happened to fall into the sunlight outside the window, a clear and warm color.

Elaine reached out and brought the flowers over. In truth, he was not good at doing such things, and could only try his best to make his tone sound less frightening.

“When I came back, I passed by again and remembered that you seemed to like them last time.”

At this point, the cold, hard Alpha lowered his eyes and gave a light laugh. “I was afraid the doctor would scold me, so I only bought a small bunch.”

The warm sunset covered half of Elaine’s sharp face, but Shi Sheng could only see the gentleness in the Alpha’s eyes.

Elaine carefully placed the small bunch of roses beside Shi Sheng’s pillow.

“Is it all right to put them here?”
