Chapter 19: It Counts as a Hug Too
Elaine held back the action he believed would offend Shi Sheng.
When facing Shi Sheng, the Alpha known as the God of Death was so cautious that he hardly seemed like himself.
Naturally, Shi Sheng had no idea what Elaine was thinking. He only looked at Elaine nervously.
Because he felt that the distance between them was a little too close.
He tilted his head up, while Elaine lowered his golden eyes. The tip of his nose was filled with the Alpha’s cold, sharp pheromone scent.
[Goddess above, he-he-he-he isn’t going to kiss me, is he…]
[But I’m not ready yet!]
[If I’d known getting injured came with this kind of treatment, I should’ve let the magical beast hit me one more time.]
The sudden inner voice made Elaine pause. In the next second, he straightened up and pulled some distance away from Shi Sheng.
Under the Omega’s blank gaze, Elaine was silent for a few seconds, but still very lightly and briefly touched Shi Sheng’s head.
“Next time you encounter danger…”
He wanted to tell Shi Sheng not to joke around, that if he truly encountered danger, he should not worry about others and should protect himself first.
But Shi Sheng had done nothing wrong in this accident. The young man was a brave and kind Omega. It was Elaine who had failed to protect him properly.
“I won’t let you get hurt again.” Elaine’s cold voice carried solemnity. “I will protect you well.”
Shi Sheng felt as if he had been shot by the Goddess of Love. His heart began pounding wildly.
How strange. Such an ordinary sentence sounded to him like a grand confession.
Because the one making that promise was Elaine, the person he had placed deeply in his heart since childhood.
Without thinking, Shi Sheng grabbed Elaine’s wrist with both hands, his amber eyes shining brightly.
“Thank, you.”
He could not make any sound, but Elaine understood the shape of his lips.
Elaine’s voice was gentle. “I should be the one thanking you. Thank you for protecting Yu Mian.”
His hand paused, but in the end, he lightly touched the top of Shi Sheng’s head again. “You are braver than the knights of the Empire.”
Shi Sheng’s face instantly flushed red. He felt that if he were a puppy, he should already have a pair of perked-up ears by now.
Very quickly, he thought of Yu Mian again and hurriedly gestured with his hands.
Then he remembered that Elaine could not understand, so he could only use exaggerated lip movements to ask, “Yu, mi, an…”
“He’s fine.” Elaine comforted him. “I had him go home.”
Shi Sheng nodded and lowered his head, touching the blanket beside his hand.
[Is this a hospital? I want to go home too… It would be nice if I could go back to the Carlos residence.]
[Forget it. I can’t trouble Elaine.]
The young man’s inner voice carried a sense of dejection and melancholy.
Elaine asked, “Do you want to go back?”
Shi Sheng instantly raised his head.
[How does Elaine know what I’m thinking? He’s amazing!]
Elaine was silent for a moment, then tugged the blanket up for Shi Sheng. “Wait for me.”
Before Shi Sheng could react, Elaine had already stood and walked out. When he returned, he was carrying a thick coat.
“I hope I can fulfill all your wishes, but in this situation, it would be best to follow the doctor’s advice.” Elaine stood beside the bed. He was too tall, but in order for Shi Sheng to hear him clearly, he bent down and leaned very close.
Shi Sheng was a little disappointed, but still obediently nodded.
A trace of amusement appeared in Elaine’s eyes. “So when the doctor said there was no problem, I thought we should be able to go home.”
Shi Sheng’s eyes brightened again, and he quickly sat up.
This movement tugged at his wound, and only then did he belatedly realize that his whole body hurt.
Elaine gently pressed down on his shoulder. “Careful.”
Then the cold scent drew closer, and Shi Sheng was wrapped up tightly in a coat.
Elaine carefully pulled the hood over Shi Sheng’s head and zipped it all the way to the top. Shi Sheng was left with almost only a pair of round eyes showing.
“If you feel uncomfortable anywhere, you must tell me.” The Alpha’s low voice sounded beside his ear.
Shi Sheng nodded hard. Just as he was about to slowly slide off the hospital bed, his body suddenly felt light. Elaine had lifted him into his arms.
“!!!” Shi Sheng widened his eyes. In the next second, he clung to Elaine with both hands and feet.
He even seized the chance to wrap his arms around the Alpha’s neck and quietly pressed his cheek against him.
[Rounding up, this counts as a hug!]
The corner of Elaine’s lips slowly curved. The arms holding Shi Sheng were very gentle, yet also very strong.
“There are doctors at home too.” He did not allow himself to sink too deeply into the Omega’s adorable inner voice. “Tonight, they will be on standby. If you feel uncomfortable anywhere, tell me. I will help you pass it on.”
Shi Sheng was a little surprised. Was Elaine going to stay by his side tonight?
His voice device was lost, and the doctors might not be able to understand sign language either. Did Elaine mean he would be his interpreter?
What was magical was that Shi Sheng realized Elaine really did always seem to understand what he wanted to express.
And Elaine’s wording…
Home. Elaine said “home.”
It was as if there were a feather in Shi Sheng’s heart, floating all the way up into the sky.
With a little scheming, he buried his face in Elaine’s arms and nodded hard.
After leaving the ward, Shi Sheng did not feel even a bit of wind before Elaine gently placed him into the temperature-controlled aircraft.
Shi Sheng turned his head and looked out the window. There was no one else around.
As if knowing who he was looking for, Elaine explained, “The situation was urgent earlier, so I asked your mother to go back first.”
Shi Sheng froze slightly, then nodded.
He also did not want his mother to worry. He thought that once he settled down later, he would send his mother a message.
“I have already reported your safety to your mother,” Elaine said. His tone paused slightly. “Sorry. I made that decision on my own.”
The Alpha’s brows and eyes were cold, sharp, and calm. No one could tell that he was actually regretting it in his heart.
What he did not tell Shi Sheng was that when he had urgently brought the Omega to the medical center, his attitude toward Mother Shi and the nephew beside her could not be considered friendly.
“Tears are useless. If you are truly worried about him, please stand in the corner and do not obstruct the doctors’ rescue.”
After Shi Sheng entered the operating room, Elaine saw Mother Shi’s face turn pale as if she were about to collapse, so he had Alried send her back to the Shi family.
No matter what, Shi Sheng probably would not like the way he treated his relatives.
Besides, it was his fault for letting Shi Sheng wake up and not see his family.
But in Elaine’s sight, Shi Sheng shook his head hard, smiled at him, and slowly asked with a combination of gestures and lip movements:
“Then, can, I, see, Mother, tomorrow?”
Elaine did not recognize every shape of his lips, but he roughly understood.
The Omega did not blame him at all. He was only carefully asking for a chance to see his family.
Elaine’s heart softened. “Of course.”
In order to make the injured person more comfortable, he had not let Shi Sheng sit in the seat by himself earlier. Instead, he let the young man half-lie in his arms.
Shi Sheng was a little too thin. Elaine could easily feel a handful of slender bones.
Elaine carefully adjusted his posture, making sure he did not touch Shi Sheng’s wound.
“Rest.” He lightly patted the Omega. “When you wake up tomorrow, you’ll be able to see your mother.”
The next day, when the sky was already bright, Shi Sheng woke up in the Carlos residence.
But he did not immediately see his mother. Instead, he first saw Yu Mian standing hesitantly at the bedroom door.
Shi Sheng looked sleepy and confused. The gaze he directed toward Yu Mian was even more blank.
Yu Mian stood there awkwardly by himself for a long while. Seeing that Shi Sheng had woken up, he still slowly shuffled over.
“Well, I came to see whether you’d slept yourself to death.”
Seeing that Shi Sheng did not speak, he loudly explained as if trying to hide his own embarrassment,
“The doctor said you can’t sleep for too long. If it goes over twelve hours, you might be unconscious. Then of course I had to come check. You can’t die in my house.”
Shi Sheng froze, then could not help laughing.
“You still have the strength to laugh. Looks like you’re fine.”
Yu Mian clasped both hands behind his back and walked around the bedroom for a long time like a leader inspecting things. When he turned back, he saw Shi Sheng craning his neck to look toward the door.
The Omega still had thick gauze wrapped around his neck. Yu Mian was genuinely afraid that if he moved his head like that, it would fall off with a snap, so he hurried over.
“My big brother went to the military headquarters. Oh, he told me to pass on that he didn’t wake you because he didn’t want to disturb your sleep, but he left you a message on the Star Network.” Yu Mian rattled off a long string of words, then pointed at the bedside.
“The palace said your voice device was damaged. This is the new one Big Brother just had someone send over. New model. See if it works.”
“And also, he didn’t abandon you for work… Wait, why am I explaining this to you?”
“Forget it. Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that the accident at the ball was caused by someone in the palace neglecting their duty. You were injured, so no matter what, Big Brother will personally handle this matter.”
Shi Sheng’s head was dizzy as he digested Yu Mian’s words. The first thing he did was quickly open his bracelet. Sure enough, there was a message from Elaine.
It was clearly a message with even its punctuation marks written properly, yet Shi Sheng felt as if his face had turned red.
After replying seriously, he picked up the new voice device. It looked very similar to his old one, but was thinner and lighter. It was indeed a new model.
Although it was a new device, everything that should have been set up had already been set up. Not only did it have Shi Sheng’s favorite little cat emojis, it even had the rough little child’s voice he had not used since coming to the Carlos residence.
Seeing Shi Sheng earnestly fiddling with the new device, Yu Mian felt that the timing was right and gave a light cough.
“Mm, about that… thank you.”
Shi Sheng raised his head with a whoosh.
Yu Mian was so startled that he took a big step back. “You heard that?”
Shi Sheng suddenly laughed silently.
Most of the time in front of Yu Mian, he had a pale, expressionless look. But now, his eyes curved into crescents. It was a very bright smile.
Yu Mian heard a childlike voice from the voice device, made comical by its overly rough tone—
“No, need, to, thank, me, Yumi.”
“Older, brother, should, protect, younger, brother.”
Yu Mian’s heart suddenly skipped. “Who allowed you to call me Yumi!”
That was how his mother had often called him when she was still alive. Although it was not particularly private, even his other two brothers would not call him so intimately.
Seeing Shi Sheng tilt his head and look at him, a faint blush appeared on Yu Mian’s fair face. In the end, he awkwardly compromised.
“Do whatever you want. But if you dare call me that outside, you’re dead!”
Shi Sheng laughed again and used the voice device to send him a little cat bowing emoji.
