Chapter 64: “Don’t Be Afraid, I’m Here.”
After the sharp golden light destroyed the shadow tentacles, the entire carriage fell into a sudden silence. Even the whistling of the wind outside the train seemed to weaken significantly.
The old beggar, who had been shuffling toward the connecting door, froze in his tracks and snapped his head around.
The previous look of submissiveness and numbness had vanished from his wrinkled face; it was now filled with a murderous aura, and his expression was dark, sinister, and venomous.
He rattled the broken bowl in his hand. Following the sharp clinking of coins, a multitude of shadow tentacles wriggled out from the darkness within the bowl.
They were like savage demons, blotting out the sky as they viciously lunged at Jian Tang. Without exception, however, they all collapsed and vanished one after another.
It was as if a transparent protective barrier surrounded Jian Tang; any anomalous existence that stepped within a one-meter radius of the youth would be instantly shredded to pieces by a sudden flash of golden light.
All of this transpired in a split second—before Jian Tang could even register the panic, the crisis around him had already concluded.
“Who are you?” the old beggar finally spoke.
His voice was hoarse and grating, sounding like a fork scratching against a blackboard. Just listening to it felt like a form of mental pollution.
“Are you a task taker too?”
…Too?
Jian Tang instantly recalled the information from the Monster Forum: recently, quite a few task takers in the real world had suddenly gone completely mad. They were suspected of being bewitched by Sinister Seeds and would attack ordinary humans and anomalous monsters alike, feeding on their emotions and flesh to strengthen themselves. They were exceptionally dangerous.
Jian Tang’s gaze swept past the other people in the carriage. Sure enough, not a single person looked over. Every passenger coiled by a shadow tentacle stared blankly ahead with a pale, sickly green face. They looked as though they were locked in a nightmare—confused, oblivious, and completely reduced to walking corpses.
Without a shred of hesitation, Jian Tang turned and bolted!
He moved incredibly fast, almost leaving a blur behind him, but the old beggar was already prepared. The controlled passengers suddenly lunged forward, instantly blocking the carriage exits on both sides.
Jian Tang wanted to revert to his original vine form to slip through the gaps using the advantage of a smaller size, but… he failed.
This subway car no longer seemed to be traveling in the real world; instead, it was trapped in a bizarre magnetic field or formation. The power required to shift his form was tightly suppressed within his body, rendered completely unusable.
Behind him was the watchful old beggar, and ahead were the puppet passengers blocking the doors. Several passengers were already closing in on Jian Tang, baring their fangs and claws as they tried to grab him.
As Jian Tang desperately dodged, a brilliant golden light erupted before his eyes. The golden rabbit pendant hanging around his neck snapped off and plummeted to the floor, instantly transforming into a massive, tangible rabbit.
The massive golden rabbit possessed the limbs of a plush toy. It swung a round bunny fist and, with a heavy bang, sent a passenger blocking the way flying.
As the passengers were thrown through the air, the shadow tentacles binding them snapped one after another. They collapsed to the floor, unconscious, but they were freed from the grip of the shadow tentacles and were no longer manipulated by the old beggar.
Jian Tang watched in total awe.
S-so strong…
Was this the power of a high-grade system item? The thing he had been wearing all along, treating it as a simple accessory, was actually something this powerful??
With the human obstacles ahead cleared out, Jian Tang hurriedly dashed through the connecting door and ran toward the adjacent carriage.
The situation in the next carriage was also far from promising: the passengers who originally occupied the car were nowhere to be seen, and the space had completely transformed into a pitch-black swamp. Occasionally, something could be seen wriggling inside the dark shadows as if trying to crawl out—there was no telling if they were trapped passengers struggling or tentacles eagerly waiting to hunt Jian Tang down.
Jian Tang didn’t dare look closer. With the massive golden rabbit clearing the path ahead, he ran frantically, carefully treading along the golden footprints left behind by the rabbit.
In truth, he didn’t know if he was fleeing in the right direction, nor did he know if this was a proper escape route. He only knew—this golden rabbit was a life-saving item given to him by Feng Xun.
Perhaps thousands of dangerous task takers existed in this world—insidious, greedy, and brutal wretches who saw how weak and defenseless he was and only wanted him dead—but there was still one task taker who wanted him to live.
He would protect him silently, lead him out of danger, and act as his most precious wife, his most treasured family, and his most irreplaceable existence.
Jian Tang lost track of how long he had been running. Just as he was about to collapse from utter exhaustion, a sliver of light finally appeared ahead.
He gathered every ounce of strength to charge forward, bursting into a brand-new subway carriage.
Outside the windows, the black tunnel was still flashing past rapidly, but the interior was lit by bright fluorescent lights. A few passengers sat quietly in their seats. Everything looked perfectly normal; he seemed to have finally returned to the ordinary world.
The prolonged running left Jian Tang panting heavily. Someone raised their head to look at him, asking with concern, “Young man, what’s wrong?”
The moment he saw that person’s face clearly, a chill shot up Jian Tang’s spine, and he stumbled back two steps.
However, the passageway he had used to enter was already sealed shut. Pressed against the cold wall of the carriage, he had nowhere left to retreat.
The man who spoke stood up from his seat. He was dressed in a sleek suit and carried a briefcase, looking exactly like an ordinary salaryman at a glance.
Yet his face was undeniably that of the old beggar, only less weathered and disheveled—looking as though he had washed his face and aged ten years younger.
Under Jian Tang’s terrified gaze, the man stared at him for a moment and suddenly smiled.
“You aren’t a task taker.” His voice remained coarse and raspy, every single syllable exuding mental pollution.
“Who is the task taker who gave you this item? Where is he?”
Jian Tang naturally wouldn’t answer. He anxiously scanned his surroundings, trying to find a new exit, even attempting to pry open a tightly shut window to see if he could leap from the train to escape.
“I am asking you a question, and you actually ignore me!”
The man’s voice abruptly spiked, and the other passengers in the carriage raised their heads one after another, looking over.
Jian Tang almost shrieked out loud—every single one of these passengers, regardless of age or gender, shared the exact same face, staring at him with the same dark, sinister, and venomous gaze.
“The task taker who gave you the item, where is he?” the man asked again, stepping toward Jian Tang.
“He shouldn’t waste such precious power on a lowly insect. He should join us… join us, and create miracles with us!”
Miracles?
Jian Tang’s pupils shrank as he instantly realized where these people came from—just like Yuan Cheng, they had been reduced to a nest for the Sinister Seed maternal entity!
By now, the man had stepped into the one-meter circle around Jian Tang.
The massive golden rabbit swung its fist, smashing it viciously toward the man.
With a resonant boom, the entire carriage shook violently. Jian Tang’s face turned deathly pale as he witnessed the scene unfold—the massive golden rabbit’s previously invincible fist attack had actually been blocked this time.
The man had intercepted the blow using that seemingly unremarkable black briefcase. He then pressed the clasp, and the opening of the briefcase suddenly popped wide open.
Before Jian Tang could even make out what had appeared inside the briefcase, the massive golden rabbit standing before him began to rapidly shrink in size. Ultimately, it reverted to the dimensions of the initial pendant, falling to the floor with a soft clatter.
The man in the suit extended his foot and stamped down hard. The golden pendant cracked open, and countless golden pinpricks of light scattered out from within. The man opened his mouth and sucked deeply, inhaling every single speck of light into his body.
“Truly delicious.”
The other party licked his lips, wanting more, and snatched a hold of Jian Tang just as he tried to flee.
“If too much energy hadn’t been wasted on protecting a useless piece of trash like you, the power of this golden artifact should have been even richer.”
He choked the youth by the neck, his protruding eyeballs sweeping across his body as if calculating how to extract more value from him.
“Call that task taker over,” he commanded. “For him to craft a golden-grade artifact means he is a talent we need. He should join us… he must join us!”
Choked to the point of suffocating, Jian Tang could only shake his head, refusing to cooperate to the very end no matter how hard he was pressed.
The man’s expression grew progressively darker, and he gradually lost his patience.
“Useless trash… then go become our nourishment!”
He opened his mouth wide, the corners of his lips tearing further and further back until his entire scalp peeled away, exposing the bright red, squirming flesh inside, along with… a chaotic mass of writhing black tentacles.
Jian Tang was rooted to the spot in sheer horror by the grotesque and terrifying sight.
As the hideous tentacles pressed against his cheeks, winding around him with bared fangs and claws, Jian Tang realized with absolute clarity—
He was going to die.
No matter how skilled he was at fleeing, or how many times he had survived terrifying close calls to escape from extreme danger, he was, after all, only an F-rank little monster.
Lacking powerful strength or any real life-saving capabilities, an F-rank little monster had dared to leave the monster town to run around blindly on human territory. He had entirely overestimated himself, and now he was finally paying a devastating price for his recklessness.
Jian Tang closed his eyes, trembling, as a small piece of human trivia he had once read suddenly surfaced in his mind.
He had heard that many humans, right before they died, would instinctively cry out for “Mama.” Because a mother was the primary caregiver for most humans, she usually represented safety and warmth; in critical situations where life hung by a thread, people would instinctively seek a mother’s comfort and protection.
Jian Tang had no mother, let alone a caregiver, but as death loomed, a single person appeared in his mind, and he couldn’t help but want to scream that person’s name—
“Feng Xun…”
The tears he had been holding back finally burst from his eyes. He wailed out loud; this would perhaps be the absolute last time he could call the other party’s name—
“Feng Xun… Feng Xun! Feng Xun!! Feng Xun—!!!”
A sharp, agonizing shriek echoed through the entire carriage.
The man in the suit jolted violently and, like a heavy sack of flour, toppled over backward.
A sharp steel blade was driven straight through his exposed brain. Flesh flew and brain matter splattered everywhere as the chaotic mass of writhing tentacles was instantly minced into a black sludge.
The sticky tentacles plastered to his face withered and vanished completely. Jian Tang stared blankly at the person who had suddenly materialized before him, almost wondering if this was a post-mortem hallucination.
He didn’t know how the man had entered, nor did he know when the man had made his move. The man was still wearing the same formal suit from the wedding banquet today—a white shirt and black trousers, looking as thoroughly ordinary as a standard office drone who had just finished work to catch the subway.
Yet it was a thoroughly ordinary man like this who had easily taken down that terrifying task taker, effortlessly and with absolute ease.
“Don’t be afraid.”
Flinging the corpse away, Feng Xun gathered the pale, violently trembling youth into his arms, pressing his head against his chest to prevent him from seeing the grislier sights.
“Don’t be afraid, Little Tang,” he said softly.
“I’m here.”
