Chapter 21: “I want a raise!”
“…I, I’m a little scared.” Jian Tang mumbled weakly.
Feng Xun looked at the scene across the street—the fully armed police and the glaring, flashing police lights—which would indeed make anyone feel quite uneasy. Thinking back to the fact that he was actually somewhat responsible for starting all this… he felt a bit guilty.
“It is a bit chaotic here.” Feng Xun gave a light cough and made a prompt decision. “Let’s get out of here first.”
Jian Tang was desperate to escape the scene of the trouble and nodded hurriedly: “Yes, yes, let’s go.”
The two slipped smoothly out of the crowd of onlookers. Feng Xun started the car, hit the gas, and they quickly sped away from the district.
As the image of Golden Bay Hospital grew smaller in the rearview mirror, Feng Xun withdrew his gaze and found that the youth in the passenger seat was still listless and downcast.
“Still scared?” Feng Xun asked.
It was Jian Tang’s first time facing such a massive, chaotic police crackdown. Even though they weren’t catching him, he was the one who had started it all! He couldn’t help but feel uneasy: “…A, a little.”
Feng Xun thought for a moment. While stopped at a red light, he quietly fished a yellow talisman from his space card. The surge of monster aura inside the hospital earlier had been like a shockwave from an exploding bomb; although ordinary people couldn’t sense it, if one’s soul energy was too weak, it was inevitable they would feel physically unwell. Feng Xun guessed that his cohabiting cub had been affected, which was why he was so lethargic.
He crushed the talisman in his palm and, without a trace of movement, reached out with that hand to gently pat the youth on the shoulder.
In the supernatural world, this kind of talisman could sell for a sky-high price because it could defend against the mental pollution and aura pressure of a World-Lord rank’s SSS-level ability, with an effect lasting up to 24 hours. If anyone knew that Feng Xun had actually used it on an ordinary human, and merely to dispel the influence of common monster auras, their jaws would likely drop in shock.
The invisible golden light seeped into the youth’s body. Jian Tang felt a warmth spread through him, and his initial panic instantly eased significantly.
He looked at Feng Xun in surprise. The latter had already withdrawn his hand and turned to glance at him as if nothing had happened.
“Don’t be afraid,” Feng Xun said. “We’ll be home soon.”
The green light turned on, and the car started moving again, leaving Sunset Avenue completely behind, putting the noise and clamor near the hospital far in the distance.
Jian Tang gazed at his wife’s focused side profile as he drove, his nose suddenly feeling a bit sore. He seemed to understand a little bit now—why, after his wife had comfortingly patted his shoulder, he had suddenly felt warm in his body, as if he had a reliable backup, and was no longer panicked.
Didn’t humans often say that?
—Once you have family, you have both a weakness and armor.
Although what he had wasn’t an “adorable wife,” a wife was still a wife. No matter what kind of wife he was, he was his most important family. He was no longer a lonely little monster. From now on, his timidity, his sadness, his confusion, and his nervousness were no longer just his own affairs—they would be seen by another person, perceived by another person. That person was the wife he had now—who would also be his family forever.
Jian Tang puffed out his cheeks and silently clenched his little fists.
Even if it’s just for my wife, I have to pull myself together!
Let the storm come even harder! A spark of fighting spirit flickered in the youth’s eyes.
I’m a little monster who has a wife! I won’t be afraid!
Seeing the youth suddenly perk up out of the corner of his eye, the single strand of hair on his head even shaking happily, Feng Xun nodded lightly in satisfaction and gave him a mental “thumbs up.”
Not bad.
SS-rank exorcism talismans really are effective.
—
A night passed.
The next morning, Jian Tang went to work and discovered that the news—”The Jingba Town space entrance was nearly wiped out by the human Investigation Bureau”—had already spread throughout all the monster circles in City A.
It was said that the mayor of Jingba Town had moved the entire space overnight, luckily escaping the Investigation Bureau’s concentrated manhunt. However, rebuilding a space entrance required time, and for the short term, the monster factories based in Jingba Town couldn’t conduct any material trade with the outside world. They were forced to suspend business for at least a month.
The main narrative currently circulating about the culprit behind the exposure of the space entrance was that the gatekeeper of Jingba Town, a Stinky Mole, had been too greedy, eating all sorts of miscellaneous, unknown things, causing its monster aura to explode crazily in a short time, which triggered the Investigation Bureau’s high-level alert and brought about the disaster.
Jian Tang, who had been the one to feed them the miscellaneous, unknown things: “…”
Jian Tang arrived at the factory and went upstairs to the Big Boss’s office to turn in his mission. The fat octopus coiled on the desk was laughing so hard his large fangs were bared.
“Hahahaha! Well done! Well done!” Others might not have been clear on it, but the octopus boss knew for sure that the fun had happened at Jingba Town and was inevitably related to Jian Tang.
“How on earth did you manage that?” he asked enthusiastically. “How did you make the aura of those damned Stinky Moles explode like that?”
Seeing the Big Boss looking so incredibly interested, Jian Tang froze, suddenly realizing something.
He had been anxious that he had caused too much trouble and attracted high-level attention from the Investigation Bureau, thinking he had committed a grave error and brought big trouble to his supernatural brethren. But in the boss’s eyes, this was a massive win—retaliation and commercial competition combined. Not only had he thrown Jingba Town into chaos and vented his anger, but he had also forced his rivals to close their factories for over a month, completely eliminating any worry about them stealing orders. For a profit-driven octopus boss, this was winning on every front.
Jian Tang blinked his eyes, and a bold idea popped into his head.
“I didn’t just throw stench bombs,” he said slowly. “I fed them to the Stinky Moles while also throwing in some bait.”
The octopus boss froze, then realized: “So that’s it!”
The stench bombs produced in their factory weren’t like the common goods sold in the System Mall. Because they were refurbished second-hand goods, they inevitably contained some impurities. When consumed simultaneously with marking-type bait, there was a certain probability of causing a monster aura explosion. If this occurred in a dungeon, it could briefly intimidate Taskers, making them think they had encountered a high-level supernatural entity and causing them to panic and flee. The octopus boss hadn’t expected it could also be used in the real world—this instantly opened up a new line of thinking for him!
“Well done! You kid actually have a pretty sharp head.” The octopus nodded with satisfaction. “Good, you can go now. Go prepare to receive the VIPs.”
Jian Tang didn’t move. He took a deep breath and said slowly.
“I want reimbursement for the cost of the bait.”
The octopus’s grinning mouth slowly snapped shut. His bulging brown octopus eyes turned in unison and locked onto Jian Tang.
An invisible pressure began to fill the room. Jian Tang instinctively wanted to shiver, but suddenly, a warmth spread through his body, as if something had helped him crush that oppressive force, allowing him to straighten his spine once again.
This made Jian Tang recall the experience of the previous night, and a surge of courage welled up in his heart.
Don’t be afraid, Jian Tang. He told himself.
Things are different now; you’re not alone.
You have to create a better life for your wife, you have to be worthy of your wife’s trust and reliance, you have to find a way to earn more benefits for the little home you and your wife run together!
“I don’t just want reimbursement for the bait, I want a running-errand fee,” Jian Tang bravely looked the Big Boss in the eye, his every word ringing with strength. “Doing your dirty work isn’t my primary job. If you want me to do extra things, you have to pay more!”
“Shit!” The octopus was infuriated. “Jian, you’re daydreaming! Don’t even think about it!”
“…Why can’t I think about it? I have to think about it!” Jian Tang discovered that after overcoming his initial fear, the things he’d been bottling up inside weren’t so hard to say after all. He stiffened his neck and shouted back in a voice louder than the octopus boss’s.
“I want a raise, too!”
“You haven’t given me a raise in over a hundred years! Every time I finish your dirty work, you give me pie-in-the-sky promises about a raise at the end of the year, but you’ve never honored it once! I want a raise today! I want all the back pay you owe me!”
“I. WANT. A. RAISE!!!”
