Chapter 81: The Interweaving of Memories
Si Er felt that when it came to playing around, the more people there were, the livelier it would be.
There might not be many people on their side, but they had plenty of soul pets!
He and Yu Beixuan had claimed a seesaw for themselves. Just as they were enthusiastically tipping each other up and down, he noticed that their soul pets had started playing on a seesaw too—using a brand-new method he had never seen before.
At the very bottom on the left sat the enormous Benben. Sitting on top of Benben was Guagua, and perched on Guagua’s head was Cuicui.
On the right side, lying at the very bottom was the eldest, Yu Bei Wolf. On top of the wolf lay Yu Bei Tiger, on its back stood Yu Bei Eagle—and somehow, the weight on both sides was almost perfectly balanced.
“They look so fun!” Si Er thought.
Yu Beixuan, displeased that the group of soul pets had stolen Si Er’s attention, pressed down harder on his side of the seesaw, increasing the weight and sending Si Er soaring high into the air.
Si Er’s focus snapped back immediately. “That’s way too high, isn’t it?”
Yu Beixuan smiled. “Does Er’er think this is fun?”
“Fun!” Si Er answered without hesitation. “When you go up high, it feels like your view opens up.”
Yu Beixuan chuckled. “If Er’er likes it, we can go even higher.”
“Let’s not!” Si Er hurriedly stopped him. “This is already the maximum height of the seesaw, right? If you want to go higher, you’d have to dismantle it.”
And it’s no fun if I’m the only one going that high. Xuanxuan has to join in too!
As he spoke, Si Er pressed down hard on his own side. He dropped swiftly, sending Yu Beixuan up high into the air.
Yu Beixuan had never played this kind of game before. He used to think it was childish and completely beneath his dignity.
The moment that thought crossed his mind, he saw Yu Bei Tiger lose its grip and get launched straight into the air.
His eyelids twitched wildly. It felt as though long-buried memories had suddenly risen up to attack him.
So he had played this game before—when he was two years old. The one sitting opposite him back then had been his own father.
The outcome had been obvious. His father had slammed down with force, and Yu Beixuan had been sent flying, ending up hanging high in a tree nearby.
Truly, some memories were too painful to revisit. Thinking carefully, many of the games he disliked had his father’s shadow in them.
Yu Beixuan suddenly realized that under his father’s influence, he had lost hope in many of the beautiful things in this world.
But now he had Er’er.
When he played together with Er’er, every game became interesting again.
The seesaw was fun. The slide was fun. The swing was fun too.
Even if he was only the one standing on the ground pushing the swing, just looking at Si Er’s radiant smile made him feel as though the world was bright and beautiful.
“Xuanxuan, I’m done. It’s your turn.”
Si Er loved swinging. It was nice to swing alone, but even better if someone joined him.
Still, if he just sat there being pushed the whole time, it would eventually get boring.
A game like this needed give and take. It couldn’t be only him enjoying it.
Yu Beixuan had wanted to push the swing a little longer, but after hearing Si Er’s thoughts, he immediately stopped and obediently switched places.
The three Yubei soul pets nearby, who had also been swinging, were stunned. Since when had Xuanxuan ever been so obedient?
Sure enough, love really does make people crazy.
Ever since Xuanxuan met that pretty-faced Si Er, he had completely changed.
But Si Er was indeed adorable. His mouth was sweet, and he said plenty of praise for soul pets.
If those two ended up together, would they finally get compliments from Si Er?
As for praise from Yu Beixuan? They wouldn’t dare hope for that.
Perhaps because their thoughts had wandered too far, the three Yubei soul pets sitting on the swing were suddenly flung into the air together by Guagua.
Yu Bei Eagle was fine—it could fly. It soared to the nearby slide and happily enjoyed sliding down once more.
Yu Bei Tiger followed suit, teleporting to the slide and slipping down behind the eagle.
Only Yu Bei Wolf was unlucky. It couldn’t fly or teleport. It crashed solidly back into its own courtyard, kicking up clouds of dust and smashing a large crater into the ground.
The loud “boom” sounded painfully real. Even Si Er winced at the sound.
“Xuanxuan, should you go check on Yu Bei Wolf?” Si Er asked softly.
Yu Beixuan shook his head. “No need. It’s born thick-skinned and sturdy. It’s just a fall. It’ll be dizzy for a bit and then bounce back.”
Si Er sucked in a breath. “But that wasn’t an ordinary fall. It flew so high and so far!”
“High, maybe. But not far. Just into the next courtyard,” Yu Beixuan said indifferently. “Don’t worry. If something were wrong, would I still be sitting here so calmly?”
“That’s true.”
Seeing that Yu Beixuan looked perfectly normal, Si Er finally relaxed and cheerfully resumed pushing him on the swing.
Yu Beixuan also let out a quiet breath. He had just remembered his father again.
When he was little, he had loved the swing too. There had been one at home, built by his father for his mother.
When Yu Beixuan was still a tiny dumpling, he loved climbing onto it. Doting on his son, the City Lord had naturally indulged him.
The higher the swing went, the happier little Yu Beixuan became, laughing more brightly each time.
Lost in those radiant smiles, the City Lord had thrown away his common sense and given one powerful push. The swing soared to its highest point—and tiny Yu Beixuan went flying with it.
He had flown even higher and farther than Yu Bei Wolf did today. If his father’s soul pet hadn’t caught him in time, he might have died on the spot.
After that, whenever Yu Beixuan saw a swing, he would automatically retreat three steps away, never daring to climb onto it again.
He believed his self-control was far stronger than his father’s. At least he wouldn’t repeat the same mistake.
Anything that had caused him suffering once, he would never do a second time.
But his father—
“Achoo!”
In Beiye City, the City Lord sneezed loudly.
He rubbed his nose and gave Madam Yu a satisfied smile. “My dear, our Xuanxuan must be thinking of me again!”
Madam Yu glanced out the window. “It’s only just turned dark. Could you not start dreaming so early?”
Yu Beimo nodded in agreement. “Yeah, Father. When Xuanxuan thinks of you, it’s usually when he wants to scold you. Don’t get so happy.”
Yu Beiming shook his head. “Father is different. Even if Xuanxuan scolds him, he’d still be delighted.”
Yu Beimo’s eyes gleamed mischievously. “Oh right, Dad. Si Yi told me that Xuanxuan has started calling him ‘Big Brother.’”
“Do you think one day he’ll go call the City Lord of Si ‘Father’ instead?”
“Impossible! Absolutely impossible!” The City Lord slammed the table and shot to his feet.
Yu Beimo grinned. “Why impossible? I think the City Lord of Si is more reliable than you.”
“In what way is he more reliable?” the City Lord demanded. “He didn’t even know his own son had been swapped! And that’s reliable?”
“And that old Quan—he’s disloyal! He has concubines and several illegitimate sons!”
“And that Old Jun… well, he’s slightly more reliable. But he picked up someone else’s child to raise!”
“He didn’t have a daughter of his own, so he went and adopted someone else’s!”
“Unlike me—I can produce my own!”
“I am the most successful father!”
Everyone: “……”
