Chapter 66: The Gravity Talisman Block
After reviewing everyone’s results, Lin Zhihui walked over to Lu Taiping again, only to see that Lu still couldn’t draw the talisman pattern onto his uneven, lumpy talisman block.
Lin Zhihui picked up the block and examined it for a while, mentally simulating how he would place his strokes. After a brief attempt in his mind, his expression darkened. He set the block back down in front of Lu Taiping and placed a sheet of ordinary talisman paper beside it.
“Why don’t you give up on this paper lump and try drawing on regular talisman paper instead?”
Lu Taiping felt very reluctant to abandon his “paper lump,” but in order not to waste the class, he chose the ordinary talisman paper.
Si Er, however, stared at the talisman block with eager curiosity. “Classmate Lu, could I try your talisman block?”
Lin Zhihui glanced at Si Er but didn’t stop him.
He had long heard of Si Er’s reputation—this child was a mystery through and through, full of miracles.
Perhaps what others found impossible, Si Er might actually accomplish.
Lu Taiping thought the same and immediately handed over his talisman block.
Si Er didn’t intend to draw a defensive talisman on it. He felt that such a lumpy block would be more suitable for a gravity talisman.
They had textbooks for talisman class. Si Er flipped through it, quickly found the page on gravity talismans, and began studying the pattern.
After learning it, he took out a blank talisman paper from his storage ring to experiment. Only after successfully drawing it there did he begin inscribing it onto the paper lump.
As he wrote, Si Er relied on instinct to slightly modify the structure of the gravity talisman. In the end, he actually succeeded.
When it was completed, a golden flash streaked across the paper lump, just like before.
Si Er was delighted. Holding up the talisman block, he asked, “Instructor Lin, may I take this outside to test it first?”
“Of course.”
Lin Zhihui was also eager to see the results and completely forgot about the group of people in the corridor.
The moment those people heard Si Er was coming out, they scrambled to flee. Some were quick and vanished immediately; others somehow stepped on someone’s foot, that person hooked another’s leg—
By the time Si Er stepped outside, he saw seven or eight people sprawled across the corridor, their limbs tangled together. The scene looked rather…
Si Er froze.
What are they doing? Sunbathing in the hallway in broad daylight?
If they want sun, wouldn’t the training field be better? The academy’s huge—there’s a pond, pavilions, grassy slopes…
Why here? And specifically outside our classroom?
He couldn’t help glancing at the other classrooms.
There isn’t a single person outside those rooms! What exactly are these instructors doing?
Lin Zhihui also found the sight unbearable. As he listened to Si Er’s thoughts, he hurriedly searched for an excuse.
Just as Si Er finished his internal shock, Lin Zhihui had an idea.
“Classmate Si Er, it’s like this. The academy’s instructors care deeply about every student’s learning progress.”
“So they conduct random inspections of each classroom from time to time.”
“Today, they just happened to inspect our class. To avoid making students feel monitored and uncomfortable during lessons…”
“They lie on the ground while listening.”
“Oh, I see.”
Si Er nodded as if enlightened, appearing to believe the nonsense.
Does Instructor Lin think I’m a child? How did he even come up with such a ridiculous excuse?
Lin Zhihui: Is it really that ridiculous?
If they want to inspect classes, couldn’t they just set up monitoring devices somewhere discreet?
It’s not like this world doesn’t have similar tools. Wouldn’t that be simpler?
Even if instructors insist on coming to the corridor, shouldn’t inspections involve using their eyes?
What can they learn just by listening? There’s quite a lot of self-study time in this world’s classes.
Lin Zhihui: Has it occurred to you that the long self-study time might exist precisely to listen to your thoughts?
If they don’t stand up and peek through the window, how would they even know if students are slacking off?
Lin Zhihui quickly found another patch for the loophole.
“Classmate Si Er, I understand that what I said may sound far-fetched, but believe me—these instructors aren’t exactly the most reliable.”
“What?” The instructors who had just climbed up stared at him in disbelief. “Instructor Lin Zhihui, that’s slander!”
“I’m not slandering anyone,” Lin Zhihui continued. “Classmate Si Er, you should know that most people on the Ten Thousand Beasts Continent cultivate their divine souls. Sometimes they use spiritual sense to gather information.”
“They were using spiritual sense to check our classroom. But since they like to slack off, they just lie on the ground while doing it.”
Si Er immediately spotted another flaw.
If they can use spiritual sense, why stand in the corridor? Couldn’t they just stand upstairs and still see everything?
Lin Zhihui felt like he was losing his mind. What was he supposed to say? That they wanted to hear your inner thoughts?
And that to hear your thoughts, they had to stand somewhere they could see you?
He couldn’t possibly say that.
Just thinking about it made him feel like something was blocking his mouth.
Taking a deep breath, he said helplessly, “Alright, Classmate Si Er. Let’s go to the training field and test your gravity talisman block.”
“No need to go all the way there, right?”
Si Er had originally planned to, but as he looked up, he suddenly noticed a black butterfly flying high in the sky.
Instinctively, he felt the butterfly was no good.
“That butterfly is flying pretty high. It looks unusual. I want to try using the gravity talisman to knock it down.”
With that, he hurled the talisman block in his hand.
The gravity talisman he had drawn was slightly different from ordinary ones—the longer it traveled and the further its trajectory, the stronger the gravitational effect became.
So when the gravity talisman block struck the butterfly, the butterfly instantly lost its life—and died rather miserably.
One of the instructors in green robes shouted, “Ah Li!” and a hawk flew toward the butterfly.
“Don’t—”
Si Er had just shouted when he realized it was too late. The hawk was nearly smashed back to the ground by the gravity talisman block.
Fortunately, the hawk managed to catch the butterfly’s corpse, shake off the talisman block, and fly back to its soul master.
It wasn’t that it didn’t want to bring the gravity block back as well—it simply couldn’t carry it. After all, it had been injured by the impact.
The moment it returned, it threw itself into its master’s arms and cried out pitifully.
The green-robed instructor quickly held it, feeding it medicine and coaxing it like a beloved child.
Meanwhile, Lin Zhihui picked up the corpse of the black butterfly, his expression turning grave.
“This is Thousand-Temptation Fox Lady’s messenger butterfly.”
