Chapter 64: Defensive Talisman
The talisman-drawing class lasted for two consecutive periods.
In the first period, the students were asked to make their own talisman paper. In the second, they officially began learning how to draw talismans.
Unfortunately, the results of the first class were far from ideal, giving Lin Zhihui quite a headache.
Out of eleven students in the class, only Si Er, Lan Yuxiao, and Wen Rang successfully produced normal talisman paper.
Yu Beixuan’s talisman paper looked perfect—but he had no inheritance for dark-attribute talismans, so Lin Zhihui had no way to teach him.
Lu Taiping’s could barely be counted. It didn’t even look like paper, but at least it functioned.
Lin Zhihui found his talent rather miraculous. The materials had been mashed into a lump—so how was it still usable?
Still, usable was usable. Even counting him, fewer than half the class had completed their talisman paper.
For those who hadn’t finished, Instructor Lin didn’t press the issue. After all, it wasn’t an absolutely essential skill.
He handed the remaining students the most ordinary talisman paper and turned to begin teaching them how to draw talisman patterns.
The first lesson was the simplest defensive talisman. It had no attribute restrictions, and its defensive effect was fairly average.
“This is the simplest and easiest talisman structure to grasp. Don’t look down on it just because the defense is ordinary.”
“You should know that the same talisman can have very different effects depending on who draws it.”
“Some geniuses can use the simplest structure to create the strongest results.”
Lu Taiping asked curiously, “Then how strong is the one you draw, Instructor?”
Lin Zhihui thought for a moment. “Hard to say. I’ll stick the one I draw here in a bit. If you’re curious, you can come try it one by one.”
After drawing a defensive talisman, Lin Zhihui stuck it onto the small potted plant he had brought with him.
“This is a money tree I dug up not long ago. It’s still very tender—perfect for this kind of little experiment.”
The potted plant was indeed tiny—just two or three fleshy little sprouts. It looked fragile enough to snap at a touch.
Si Er felt that just two extra ladles of water might drown it.
For Instructor Lin to use it for testing showed just how confident he was in his defensive talisman.
Lu Taiping, meanwhile, was itching to try, almost reaching out with his “evil” hand toward the poor plant.
Unfortunately, a single casual glance from Lin Zhihui instantly extinguished all his boldness.
Resigned, Lu Taiping sat properly and began trying to draw the talisman pattern on his self-made talisman block.
But his block was uneven and bumpy, making it difficult for ink to adhere.
Even when he managed to draw something, the structure became distorted by the ridiculous shape of the talisman block.
Lu Taiping felt utterly despairing.
He couldn’t help leaning over to peek at the classmate he had the highest expectations for—Si Er.
He saw Si Er tracing the pattern in the air several times with his finger before finally placing his brush down and completing it in one smooth motion.
A faint golden light flashed across the talisman paper—it looked impressive.
Lu Taiping looked up at Instructor Lin and saw a look of admiration and astonishment on his face.
Then he glanced at Si Xu, who had also drawn the full pattern. As for whether it succeeded, Lu Taiping couldn’t tell—but judging by Instructor Lin’s expression, it must have.
Next, Lu Taiping turned to look at his aloof yet slightly adorable classmate Yu.
After staring blankly for quite a while, Yu Beixuan suddenly finished his drawing in one fluid stroke. A black light radiated from his talisman paper.
Lu Taiping looked up again at Instructor Lin—and saw him staring in sheer amazement.
Lin Zhihui quickly walked over to Yu Beixuan, stuck the black talisman onto Yu’s body, and then launched an attack at him.
He didn’t use much force, but given his strength, even a light attack wasn’t weak.
Yet the talisman on Yu Beixuan absorbed all of the force.
Yes—absorbed, not dissipated.
Lin Zhihui found this extremely fascinating.
Where did the absorbed power go?
He launched another attack, slightly stronger this time. Again, all the force was absorbed.
“Classmate Yu, do you feel anything right now?” Lin Zhihui asked.
Yu Beixuan shook his head. “Nothing.”
None of the force had touched him. What would he feel?
Lin Zhihui continued, “You drew this defensive talisman, and it’s attached to you. Do you sense any connection with it?”
Yu Beixuan shook his head again. “No.”
“No?”
Unable to get answers, Lin Zhihui gently touched the talisman himself and felt its defensive strength had grown even stronger.
So it could absorb attacks to enhance itself?
That seemed extremely promising.
He withdrew his hand, gazing at the talisman reluctantly.
“Classmate Yu, why don’t you just keep this talisman on you? Don’t tear it off.”
“It can strengthen itself by absorbing attacks. You could have someone hit you a few times every day—their attack power increasing gradually.”
“If you repeat the process daily, this defensive talisman might last you a lifetime.”
Yu Beixuan: “……”
Si Er also found it amusing.
I didn’t expect Xuanxuan’s talisman talent to be this good. He followed the original design, yet created an entirely new effect.
Instructor Lin’s suggestion is interesting… just sounds a bit weird.
Finding someone to hit you every day…
Sigh, I don’t even know how to describe it.
But if it really could last a lifetime, maybe keeping it on wouldn’t be bad. Though the position Instructor Lin stuck it is kind of strange!
A black strip hanging on the left arm… it looks like modern mourning attire…
Ahhh, don’t think that, don’t think that! May Xuanxuan’s whole family stay safe and sound!
Earth’s customs have nothing to do with the Ten Thousand Beasts Continent. Nothing at all!
Yu Beixuan quickly tore the defensive talisman off.
“Instructor Lin, wearing it like this every day isn’t convenient. How about making another one into a portable talisman instead?”
Instructor Lin nodded absentmindedly, sighing regretfully. “But the defensive talisman you drew earlier was practically a miracle. Miracles require the right timing, place, and harmony—it’s not something you can recreate every time.”
Yu Beixuan looked puzzled. “Wasn’t I just drawing it in the classroom? What timing and harmony?”
“…Fair point. Then try again.”
Lin Zhihui handed him two more sets of materials.
“One set is the same as what you used this morning—the most common and easiest to work with.”
“The second set is better-quality talisman material, the kind I usually use. I’ve attached separate instructions for it. Try both.”
“If there’s anything you don’t understand, ask me later.”
After that, Lin Zhihui went to examine Si Er’s talisman.
This one had also flashed with light—who knew if it had any special effect?
“Classmate Si Er, would you mind if I test the talisman you drew?”
“Not at all, not at all.” Si Er offered it with both hands.
I’m curious too! It would be great if it’s as amazing as Xuanxuan’s.
