Chapter 69: The Plan
“Are you inside? It’s Feng Wenkang. I have something to say.”
Mo Xiu and Mo Qi exchanged glances, both a little surprised that the visitor was Feng Wenkang.
“Didn’t expect this guy to work so fast,” Mo Qi said with a smile.
Mo Xiu nodded as well and called toward the door, “Just a moment.”
The hallway outside immediately became quiet again.
Since it was already late, the two quickly got dressed and opened the door. Outside, Feng Wenkang was pacing anxiously. When he saw them, a flattering smile immediately appeared on his face.
“Brother Mo, Brother Qi—sorry for disturbing you!”
Ever since their last meeting, Feng Wenkang’s attitude toward them had become even more respectful than before.
He caught sight of the faint kiss marks on Mo Xiu’s neck and quickly lowered his head, looking elsewhere. Only after Mo Qi stepped aside to signal him to enter did he walk into the room.
As soon as the door closed, Feng Wenkang spoke.
“I’ve already done everything you asked.”
His expression became much more serious as he spoke.
“I’ve investigated everything at the research institute. This is the list of people who have participated in the experiments.”
As he spoke, Feng Wenkang took out a document and handed it to Mo Qi.
Looking at the long list of names, there were more people than they had expected. Not only ability users, but ordinary people as well—though without exception they were all physically strong individuals. In total there were about two hundred people directly involved in experiments.
And those were only the confirmed participants.
Another, even longer list recorded people who had contact with the institute for various reasons. Combined with the experimental subjects, the total number exceeded a thousand.
That number was alarming.
“How are these people doing now?” Mo Xiu asked while looking at the list.
“So far there haven’t been any abnormalities,” Feng Wenkang replied.
After receiving Mo Qi’s instructions, he had immediately begun investigating, working nonstop without wasting a moment.
Fortunately, Feng Wenkang was well-connected and good at handling people. From the beginning he had been responsible for similar registration work in the base and knew personnel movements extremely well. That was why he could complete the investigation so quickly.
His motivation wasn’t only hatred for Professor Frank after the frightening “side effects” of the injection he had received—it was also fear.
Feng Wenkang knew he couldn’t deal with Professor Frank himself. So he placed all his hope in Mo Xiu and Mo Qi, praying they could eliminate this troublemaker before the Shanhe Base was destroyed.
If the others who participated in the experiments had also been injected with zombie virus like him… he didn’t dare imagine the consequences.
“What should we do next?” Feng Wenkang asked urgently. “If there’s anything else you need me to do, just say the word!”
Mo Qi raised an eyebrow.
He hadn’t actually assigned Feng Wenkang much to do before, but he truly hadn’t expected the man’s efficiency to be this high.
Hundreds of people had been investigated clearly in less than two days, and the list was extremely detailed.
It recorded where each person lived and what work they did in the base.
More than a hundred of them were currently working directly at the research institute, assisting Professor Frank—very similar to Xiong Gangyong’s earlier situation. They ate and lived at the institute and rarely left.
The remaining people lived and worked in various corners of the base.
Strangely, their distribution across the base was very even—and that very “evenness” felt abnormal.
Shanhe Base wasn’t very large. Several hundred people spread evenly throughout it was more than enough to serve as radiation points.
If all of them had demonic energy inside their bodies and it erupted simultaneously, the entire base could be destroyed instantly.
Of course, that was the worst-case scenario.
Even though many people had interacted with the institute recently, it didn’t necessarily mean they all contained demonic energy.
The extent of Professor Frank’s control over demonic energy was still unknown.
However, among these people were quite a few high-level ability users. If they were converted, they would likely become high-level zombies. Even if discovered, eliminating them wouldn’t be easy.
Looking at it this way, Mo Qi didn’t believe Professor Frank had done this by accident.
“That guy is definitely planning something big,” Mo Xiu said.
Mo Qi nodded.
Then Mo Xiu turned to Feng Wenkang and said, “For now, help us monitor these people—especially those who directly participated in experiments and the ones currently in the research institute. If anything unusual happens, report to us immediately.
If we need anything else, we’ll let you know.”
Feng Wenkang felt a chill run down his spine.
At first he hadn’t fully understood the situation, but hearing Mo Xiu say planning something big made things clear enough.
The numbers on the list and the people they represented made his back go cold.
He didn’t dare show any negligence and immediately agreed before leaving their apartment.
Once the room was quiet again, with only Mo Xiu and Mo Qi left, they began discussing what to do next.
Originally, Mo Qi had planned something much simpler.
He had asked Feng Wenkang to investigate the research institute because he thought that if only a small number of people were affected, they could simply kill the professor and extract the demonic energy from those people.
Problem solved.
But now there were hundreds involved.
That made things complicated.
“Looks like we still have to find Da Yong,” Mo Qi said.
Mo Xiu immediately understood.
Mo Qi intended to approach Xiong Mingyuan, the base leader—through Xiong Gangyong.
After all, with a crisis of this scale happening inside the base, having the base leader involved would be far more effective than the two of them acting alone.
But doing that might expose Mo Qi’s ability to restore zombies back into humans.
Such a rare ability could attract dangerous attention.
Mo Xiu understood the saying “a man without fault may still suffer for possessing a treasure.”
In his previous life, his powers had simply grown faster than others’, yet people had already tried to force him into the research institute to uncover his secret.
No matter how much he explained, they had never believed him.
Thinking that Mo Qi might face the same danger made Mo Xiu uneasy.
Even though Mo Qi was powerful, there were only two of them.
Did they really have to risk themselves for strangers?
Seeing the worry on Mo Xiu’s face, Mo Qi easily guessed what he was thinking.
The man gently cupped Mo Xiu’s cheek and kissed his forehead reassuringly.
“Don’t worry so much. Everything can be solved. And I won’t let myself get hurt. Did you forget I’m a Demon Venerable?”
He continued patiently.
“There were things I couldn’t tell you before, but now I can. I have spells that allow me to form contracts.
Back when we first met Cheng Cheng and Da Yong, when I told you they could be trusted, it wasn’t because I easily trusted people.
I placed a contract on them with my spiritual sense.
They can’t reveal our secrets. Not only can they not say anything intentionally—if they even think about it, the contract will immediately backlash against them.”
Mo Qi explained in detail so that Mo Xiu would no longer worry.
In truth, he himself wasn’t someone who liked interfering in other people’s problems.
But he knew Mo Xiu longed for the old world—the world before the apocalypse, without zombies or mutated creatures, where people could live peacefully.
Even though Mo Xiu had never said it directly, Mo Qi wanted to help him see that world again.
For Mo Qi, solving the apocalypse had already become inevitable.
“So that’s how it is!” Mo Xiu said in surprise.
Ever since learning that Mo Qi was a transmigrated demonic cultivator, he had constantly worried about his secret being exposed.
But now it seemed that being a Demon Venerable solved most of those worries.
They could even form a contract with Xiong Mingyuan later to prevent betrayal entirely.
At the same time, it also proved Cheng Cheng and Da Yong truly were trustworthy—otherwise they wouldn’t be safe and sound now.
“In that case, let’s go find Xiong Mingyuan right away,” Mo Xiu said, turning to leave.
But Mo Qi grabbed his wrist.
Seeing how impatient he looked, Mo Qi chuckled.
“No rush. Even if something happens, we can go after dinner.
I can already smell something delicious from the neighbors’ place. Xiao Wan and the others must have cooked something good.”
With that, Mo Qi simply took Mo Xiu’s hand and walked toward the next room.
Looking at the calm confidence of the man beside him, Mo Xiu felt his heart settle.
He unconsciously squeezed Mo Qi’s hand back.
As long as this person was by his side, it seemed he really didn’t have to worry about anything at all.
