Chapter 66: Healing Ability
Feng Wenkang had long since moved to a new residence. Ever since he awakened a healing-type ability, his status in the base had risen steadily. His food, clothing, housing, and transportation were all on a completely different level from before.
The people around him, eager to curry favor, had given him many tangible benefits. No wonder he looked so rosy and self-satisfied, even the angle at which he held his chin a little higher than before.
However, when he saw Mo Xiu and Mo Qi, his expression became noticeably more restrained.
He truly lived up to his reputation for knowing how to read the situation. He was well aware of Mo Xiu’s capabilities. After all, their team had returned safely from this mission, and rumors said they had even killed a Level 7 zombie, making Mo Xiu’s group even more famous throughout the base.
Naturally, Feng Wenkang felt it would be wise to maintain good relations with him. A friendly smile immediately appeared on his face as he stepped forward to greet them.
When he noticed Mo Qi’s injured arm, he instantly understood why they had come.
“Captain Mo, what an honor. You must be here to treat someone’s injury, right?”
Mo Xiu nodded and entered the room with Mo Qi. After Mo Qi sat down, Mo Xiu quietly stood beside him.
Feng Wenkang immediately began examining Mo Qi’s wound and used his so-called healing ability to slowly mend it.
It had to be said that the healing power really was effective.
Mo Qi’s wound, which had been deep enough to expose bone, began healing rapidly at a visible speed.
Seeing that Mo Qi showed no signs of discomfort while sitting there, and watching the injury close up quickly, Mo Xiu finally felt a bit relieved.
What he didn’t know was that Feng Wenkang himself was secretly shocked.
He knew his own ability very well. While it was useful, it definitely wasn’t this effective.
Yet for some reason, when used on Mo Qi, the healing effect had more than doubled.
It couldn’t be because his ability level had suddenly increased. On one hand, ability upgrades came with a clear sensation. On the other, just before Mo Xiu and Mo Qi arrived, he had treated another ability user.
That person’s wound had been small, but it still took quite a while to treat, and the injury had only mostly healed.
Feng Wenkang couldn’t understand what was happening.
But Mo Qi understood perfectly.
The reason his injury healed faster was simple: the energy behind Feng Wenkang’s ability suited him extremely well.
After all, the healing ability itself had mutated due to demonic energy.
Using it on ordinary humans wasn’t impossible, but the scattered traces of demonic energy inevitably interfered with their bodies, weakening the effect.
But Mo Qi was different.
He was a demonic cultivator, and his body contained even more demonic energy than a zombie.
Absorbing demonic energy was nourishment for him.
So Feng Wenkang’s healing ability worked twice as effectively on Mo Qi.
Mo Qi calmly watched his wound close. When the treatment ended, he suddenly looked up at Feng Wenkang.
“Your ability… you didn’t awaken it naturally, did you?”
Feng Wenkang’s smile froze instantly.
“Mo Qi, what do you mean by that?”
“What do I mean?” Mo Qi said leisurely. “You should understand very clearly. Your sudden ability probably has something to do with the research institute, doesn’t it?”
Hearing this, Feng Wenkang panicked internally.
Mo Qi’s expression was calm and he presented no evidence.
Yet somehow, the pressure he gave off made Feng Wenkang feel uneasy—even guilty.
Feng Wenkang had never held a high position in society before or after the apocalypse, but he had met powerful people.
Yet compared to Mo Qi, none of them possessed such a powerful presence.
Just who was this Mo Qi, really?
Still, Feng Wenkang clung to a shred of hope.
The deal he made had been extremely secret. How could it have been discovered so easily?
Maybe Mo Qi was just bluffing.
While Feng Wenkang continued resisting stubbornly, Mo Xiu had already understood most of the situation.
From Mo Qi’s words, Feng Wenkang’s condition likely had something to do with Meng Zhen and Xiong Gangyong.
If that was the case, then Feng Wenkang could also turn into a high-level zombie at any moment.
And if so… what exactly was his healing ability?
Could it also be related to the demonic energy in his body?
Indeed, Mo Xiu’s guess was almost entirely correct.
Seeing that Feng Wenkang refused to admit anything—or perhaps didn’t realize the seriousness of the matter—Mo Qi didn’t bother pressing him.
Instead, he used the simplest method.
He stimulated the demonic energy inside Feng Wenkang’s body, forcing the zombie transformation to begin.
Immediately, Feng Wenkang watched in horror as his fingernails turned a strange blue-black color, and his exposed hands became pale.
His body grew increasingly stiff.
He was clearly turning into a zombie.
“How… how is this possible?!”
His face was full of terror. His pupils began turning red, and his expression stiffened further.
Soon, he probably wouldn’t even be able to show fear anymore.
“Looks like you’ve done quite a few shameful things,” Mo Qi said casually. “Otherwise the retribution wouldn’t come so quickly. Why not confess now?”
Feng Wenkang struggled to speak.
“You… what… are you… saying… hhh… help me… save… me…”
He didn’t understand why this was happening.
But remembering Mo Qi’s earlier words, he began to suspect that his condition might really be related to Professor Frank.
For some reason, he felt that Mo Qi might actually have the ability to save him.
So he used his last bit of strength to beg for help.
In truth, Mo Qi’s goal had only been to scare him, not actually turn him into a zombie.
When Feng Wenkang begged for help, Mo Qi casually raised his hand and stopped controlling the demonic energy inside him.
Feng Wenkang suddenly felt his body rapidly returning to normal.
Soon he looked completely human again.
“Wh–what just happened?”
Still shaken, Feng Wenkang patted his chest and rolled up his sleeves to check his arms and hands.
The color had returned to normal. His body was no longer stiff.
Looking at Mo Qi and Mo Xiu calmly watching him, he no longer dared hide anything.
Tears streaming down his face, he confessed everything.
“How was I supposed to know that professor was so vicious? He wrote to me first, saying he had a way to create medicine that could resist the zombie virus. He wanted to come to our base and needed someone to recommend him.
No matter how I calculated it, it sounded like a good deal, so I agreed. Then I reported it to the base leader and had you go rescue him from the location he provided.”
After saying this, Feng Wenkang licked his dry lips and gulped down a large cup of water before continuing.
“As for my ability… he said that although he hadn’t created a cure for the zombie virus yet, he had developed a new drug that could awaken abilities. It was still experimental and not public yet, and he asked if I was interested.”
“Who wouldn’t be interested in something like that? As an ordinary person in the apocalypse, life was incredibly difficult. I really wanted an ability—even a useless one.
At least then I’d have a better chance of surviving wherever I went.
So I thought… fortune favors the bold…”
His reasoning was very realistic.
Mo Xiu understood.
Mo Qi continued calmly:
“So you agreed and let him test the so-called new drug on you.”
“Yes.”
Feng Wenkang nodded.
“At the time I only wanted safety and prosperity. How could I know it might turn me into a zombie?”
He then gestured the size of a medium syringe.
“That Professor Frank used a syringe about this big. The liquid inside was black. He injected it into my body—and then I awakened my ability.”
Once he started talking, Feng Wenkang told them everything in detail.
He especially emphasized how painful the injection had been.
He had suffered terribly and even believed several times that he was about to die.
After hearing everything, Mo Qi roughly understood what had happened.
Ordinary human bodies naturally reject demonic energy, which explained the intense pain.
But Mo Qi still couldn’t understand how the professor managed to separate demonic energy from the body or cause it to mutate in Feng Wenkang’s body in a way that resembled an ability.
Of course, Mo Qi knew the truth.
Feng Wenkang had never become a real ability user.
He had only turned into a high-level half-zombie with powers.
As for why the ability appeared as healing…
Considering how dramatically Feng Wenkang’s status had improved afterward, Mo Qi suspected the professor had arranged it deliberately.
However, Mo Qi didn’t plan to reveal the full truth yet.
Instead, he simply said that the professor’s drug had problems.
“What should I do then? I don’t want to become a zombie! Brother Mo, please, you have to save me!”
Remembering how close he had come to turning into a zombie, Feng Wenkang was so frightened he almost knelt down before Mo Qi.
But Mo Qi only smiled gently.
“Relax. Mo Xiu and I came here specifically to help you.”
He paused slightly before continuing:
“But we do have a small favor to ask. I wonder… would you be willing to help?”
