Chapter 62: Clearing the Air
The sudden kiss made Mo Xiu freeze on the spot.
This wasn’t their first kiss, but most of the previous ones had been on the forehead or the cheek.
Although Mo Qi always acted very close with him, many times Mo Xiu felt that the intimacy Mo Qi showed him was more like dependence or familial affection.
But what had just happened was different. Mo Qi had kissed his lips—something only lovers and couples did.
No… it shouldn’t be “just now,” because they were still kissing.
The man’s hand was clasped behind his head, holding him firmly, as if afraid he might pull away, leaving Mo Xiu absolutely no chance to refuse.
The suddenness of it all left Mo Xiu stunned. Only afterward did he realize his heartbeat had already become chaotic.
Not only that—being so close to the other man’s breath, the unmistakable warmth against his lips—it made Mo Xiu feel as though his entire body was about to burst into flames.
Ever since he had realized that his feelings for Mo Qi had surpassed friendship and family affection, he had imagined countless times that they would be together, doing intimate things that only lovers would do.
For example, kissing.
Or… doing certain extremely passionate things he had unexpectedly read about in books.
But those were only fantasies. A real, solid, undeniable kiss like this—this was the first time.
Thinking about it, that earlier tentative kiss on the corner of the lips hardly counted.
So this must be their real first kiss.
But why had Mo Qi suddenly kissed him?
Mo Qi held Mo Xiu and kissed him for quite a while before finally pulling away.
Seeing the young man opposite him still looking completely dazed, as if he hadn’t reacted at all, Mo Qi almost laughed—but he held it back.
After all, he still needed to maintain a serious attitude about this matter.
He wasn’t doing this just to take advantage of his future partner. He was punishing him—letting Mo Xiu know how formidable he was!
Mo Qi convinced himself of this internally, though his eyes couldn’t help drifting to Mo Xiu’s slightly reddened lips, and he unconsciously swallowed.
He had to admit—being close with one’s partner really felt good.
Of course, now wasn’t the time to dwell on that. After waiting a while and seeing that Mo Xiu still hadn’t reacted, Mo Qi sighed helplessly and spoke first.
“Do you know what you did wrong?”
“Huh?” Mo Xiu looked confused. Just a moment ago they were being intimate—how had it suddenly turned into questioning what mistake he made?
Seeing that Mo Xiu truly seemed to have no idea, Mo Qi gritted his teeth in annoyance.
He knew that Mo Xiu had acted earlier to protect him.
But when had he ever needed Mo Xiu’s protection?
Before they set out and even along the way, he had clearly told him that if anything happened, Mo Xiu didn’t need to worry about him—he had ways to protect himself.
He had even specially prepared protective talismans for Mo Xiu beforehand to keep him safe.
Of course, during the battle there had indeed been something unexpected.
When the Level-7 zombie self-destructed, Mo Qi sensed that its body didn’t only contain demonic energy. There was also a trace of a power beyond his understanding.
And that power was extremely familiar to him.
If it were something else, he might not be certain—but this power was the same kind he had felt when he failed his ascension in the cultivation world.
Since arriving in this world, this was the first time he had sensed something similar. Previously, he hadn’t noticed anything unusual in other zombies—it seemed only this Level-7 zombie had it.
Mo Qi couldn’t help thinking about the recent rapid advancement of both zombies and ability users, and the true reason his soul had fallen into this small world.
Was all of this really just coincidence?
Because of that strange power, Mo Qi had remained extremely cautious. Even so, he believed that with his current strength, protecting everyone wouldn’t be difficult.
If Mo Xiu hadn’t suddenly rushed in front of him, how could he have nearly lost control?
For cultivators, the biggest taboo when casting techniques was losing focus.
But because Mo Xiu suddenly rushed over, he momentarily faltered, nearly ruining everything. The zombie successfully self-destructed and almost collapsed the entire building.
Fortunately, Mo Qi’s experience allowed him to withstand it.
He even quickly absorbed all the demonic energy from the Level-7 zombie into his body, using it as nourishment to temper his own physique.
But having his rhythm disrupted still affected him somewhat. That was why, after blocking the aftershock of the explosion, he had remained weak for quite a while—so weak that Mo Xiu eventually had to carry him downstairs.
“And you’re still pretending? Didn’t we already talk about this before? If something really happened, you should leave it to me! But you didn’t take a single word to heart!” Mo Qi said through gritted teeth.
“I…” Mo Xiu felt guilty after hearing this, but what could he do? Protecting Mo Qi had been a completely instinctive reaction.
He didn’t believe that when Mo Qi rushed forward to protect him earlier, his brain had been calmly calculating things either.
So although Mo Xiu knew logically that he had broken their prior agreement and was technically in the wrong, he still felt a bit wronged.
However, in Mo Xiu’s mind, that wasn’t the important issue right now.
The important thing was that Mo Qi had just kissed him.
“Wait, Mo Qi. Don’t just question me. Is that really all you want to say? Don’t you have anything to explain?” Mo Xiu asked.
“What do I need to explain?”
Mo Qi didn’t understand. Had he asked something wrong?
Mo Xiu grew anxious. This was a rare opportunity—today he had to find a way to finally settle their relationship.
Otherwise, the person he liked was so wonderful that he always felt like everyone in the team—Cheng Cheng, Xie Wu, even that somewhat slow-witted Xiong Gangyong—was eyeing him covetously.
What if someone suddenly stole him away?
And then there was the matter of Mo Qi being able to restore someone infected by the zombie virus back into a human.
Mo Xiu hadn’t even known about it until Xiong Gangyong got into trouble and Mo Qi revealed that ability.
Didn’t that mean Xiong Gangyong held quite a high place in Mo Qi’s heart?
The more he thought about it, the more sour he felt—and it showed on his face.
“What’s wrong with you? Why do you suddenly look unhappy? Did I really do something that upset you?” Mo Qi asked.
Originally, he felt completely justified.
But seeing Mo Xiu’s expression now, he suddenly wondered if he had unknowingly done something wrong.
If Mo Xiu was truly angry, then even if he had been right, he would still end up being wrong.
After all, the Great Elder once said something very wise: anyone who tried to argue logically with their partner would end up without one…
Fortunately, Mo Xiu wasn’t someone who kept everything bottled up. He wouldn’t hide his thoughts forever.
So he looked at Mo Qi seriously and asked,
“Mo Qi, why did you… kiss my lips just now?”
“Hm? Because you did something wrong. So I punished you,” Mo Qi replied, wondering if perhaps not saying anything beforehand had made his future partner unhappy.
“Punished me?”
This answer was completely beyond Mo Xiu’s expectations.
His eyes widened as he stared at the man opposite him.
“You kissed me just to punish me? You actually think that’s a punishment? Don’t you know that kissing on the lips is something only couples do?”
To his shock, Mo Qi nodded matter-of-factly.
“I know.”
Of course he knew what kissing meant. It was a very special kind of intimacy.
If it were anyone else, he wouldn’t have wanted to kiss them at all.
He had only done it because the person in front of him was Mo Xiu.
So where had he gone wrong?
Mo Xiu was stunned by Mo Qi’s perfectly reasonable expression but stubbornly continued.
“Then explain it clearly. Why did you suddenly kiss me? Do you like me?”
Since he had already started asking, Mo Xiu decided he might as well ask everything.
Mo Qi almost laughed at the question.
Wasn’t their relationship already settled long ago? Why was Mo Xiu asking again?
Wait…
Looking at Mo Xiu’s shocked expression now, could it be that he had misunderstood all along?
Hadn’t this person been secretly in love with him from the start?
When Mo Qi was at his lowest point, Mo Xiu came to his side, caring for him selflessly and always putting him first. That was what made Mo Qi gradually realize how precious those feelings were.
And long ago, when they killed that mutated gray wolf, Mo Qi had already accepted his feelings.
So why was Mo Xiu still asking after all this time?
Mo Qi raised his head and looked carefully at the man beside the bed—and realized that Mo Xiu looked just as confused as he did.
Suddenly, their completely mismatched conversation felt ridiculously childish, and Mo Qi couldn’t help bursting into laughter.
“Do you know you look really silly right now?” Mo Qi said with a grin.
The carefree smile made him seem even more unrestrained and charming, leaving Mo Xiu momentarily dazed.
But he quickly realized that Mo Qi hadn’t answered his question at all—and had even called him silly.
Was he laughing at him?
Mo Xiu felt annoyed and was determined to get a clear answer.
Mo Qi noticed the irritation on the young man’s face and understood that his sudden laughter had upset him.
But none of that mattered now.
Because the next second, Mo Qi knelt on the bed, reached forward, wrapped an arm around the other man’s waist, and pulled Mo Xiu entirely into his embrace.
“I mean, didn’t I say anything wrong? At a moment like this, you’re still asking whether I like you. Isn’t that silly?”
As he spoke, his other hand gently cupped Mo Xiu’s cheek—and he leaned in to kiss him deeply.
This kiss was far more intense than the previous one. Mo Qi showed absolutely no restraint.
He didn’t know where the misunderstanding between them had come from.
But since Mo Xiu asked, he would make it perfectly clear.
Mo Qi no longer cared whether he had misunderstood things before.
He only knew one thing—
Mo Xiu was someone he had already decided to keep.
