Chapter 57: Old Friend
“I didn’t do anything, Brother Mo. Brother Qi said I looked tired lately and helped give me a massage!” Xiong Gaoyong scratched his head and grinned foolishly.
Hearing this made Mo Xiu feel even more irritated.
To him, it sounded like blatant bragging. What, telling him on purpose just to show that Mo Qi massaged you and that you’re closer to him?
Even though he knew in his heart that Dayong probably didn’t mean it that way, Mo Xiu still couldn’t stop those darker thoughts from surfacing.
Before their conversation could continue, however, Mo Qi suddenly frowned and said to them,
“It seems someone has arrived outside.”
When Mo Qi said “someone,” he obviously didn’t mean anyone from their team. If it were ordinary people, it wouldn’t have caught his attention at all.
The reason he mentioned it was because he sensed an unusual aura.
It didn’t feel quite like a human’s, but it also wasn’t that of a cultivator. And it certainly wasn’t the aura of a zombie either.
The strange presence had appeared near the gate for a brief moment before disappearing again. He didn’t know whether it had deliberately concealed itself or not.
However, the divine sense he had extended had clearly detected that someone had arrived at the place where they were resting.
That was why Mo Qi told Mo Xiu.
Their current location was already very close to B City. It was a resort area that happened to be the nearest stop before reaching that place.
Mo Xiu had told him earlier that while it wasn’t exactly a famous tourist destination, there were many guesthouse courtyards here.
That was why they chose to rest here—it would be more comfortable.
Their team had chosen a large courtyard on the eastern side of the resort.
The place was quite impressive, built with gray bricks and white walls. It was spacious enough to house everyone with room to spare.
The courtyard wall looked solid and sturdy, unlike other courtyards that were only surrounded by wooden fences. Relatively speaking, it was much safer.
Inside the yard, several houses were connected together.
The main building in the center was a small two-story structure.
At night, Mo Qi and Mo Xiu stayed in one of the rooms on the second floor.
After hearing Mo Qi’s words, Mo Xiu immediately became alert. He knew his lover would never mention such a thing without reason.
He quickly walked to the window and looked down.
From their current room, the window happened to overlook the gate.
Sure enough, several people had gathered outside, and they were all unfamiliar.
There were vehicles parked farther away. Judging from their equipment and formation, they seemed to come from another base.
But Mo Xiu didn’t relax his guard just because they were human.
After all, this was the apocalypse. Both zombies and humans could be dangerous.
However, as he looked at the people leading the group, one of them seemed vaguely familiar.
After thinking for a moment, Mo Xiu went downstairs, opened the door, and met the eyes of the two people standing outside.
Both men looked to be in their twenties.
One wore a light brown sweater under his coat and glasses. His appearance was fair and refined, giving him a scholarly, almost student-like air.
The other wore a black leather jacket. His handsome features were sharp and aggressive, with a rebellious look in his eyes.
Although their temperaments were completely different, standing together somehow looked strangely harmonious.
Mo Xiu stared at the bespectacled young man and froze.
“Bai Su? Why is it you?”
Before opening the door, he had only suspected.
But now that he saw the man clearly, he was certain.
The person in front of him really was his childhood friend, Bai Su.
The two of them had grown up together and had always been close friends.
Later, however, they had been admitted to different universities and moved to different cities.
In his previous life, when Mo Xiu ran into trouble, he had indeed thought about seeking Bai Su’s help.
He had once contacted him and knew Bai Su was at the University City Base.
But by the time Mo Xiu finally managed to reach that base, he received the news that Bai Su had gone missing during a mission.
In his previous life, from the start of the apocalypse until his death, they had never seen each other again.
After recognizing Mo Xiu, Bai Su froze for a moment as well before breaking into a delighted smile.
He stepped forward and patted Mo Xiu on the shoulder warmly.
“Mo Xiu! It really is you!
“You ask me—but why are you here? I thought you were at Shanhe Base. Are you leading this team on a mission?”
Only then did Mo Xiu remember that before he was reborn at Shanhe Base, he had tried to contact Bai Su.
At the time, he had mentioned that he planned to take his group to the nearby Shanhe Base.
But just two days later he was reborn, and his mind was filled entirely with revenge and finding Mo Qi.
He hadn’t had time to think about anything else.
Seeing Bai Su again made Mo Xiu happy.
Yet perhaps because of what had happened in his previous life, it felt as though a faint shadow still lingered in his heart.
Still, the two of them were old friends who hadn’t met in a long time. They had plenty to talk about.
Bai Su introduced the person beside him.
“This is Bu Zhengchen, the strongest ability user in our University City Base.”
Mo Xiu then introduced the man who had followed him downstairs.
Smiling, he said,
“This is Mo Qi—my important family member.”
“Family?” Bai Su repeated, slightly stunned.
He knew about Mo Xiu’s family situation.
At the beginning of the apocalypse, when communications hadn’t completely collapsed yet, they had talked.
He knew Mo Xiu’s family had tragically died early on.
So how had another “family member” suddenly appeared?
Standing in the corner was a tall man who had casually tied his half-long hair behind his head.
For some reason, Bai Su found him a little strange.
This man called Mo Qi wore a black long-sleeved T-shirt and cotton trousers, with old-fashioned cloth shoes on his feet.
At first glance he seemed completely ordinary.
But if you looked closely, you would notice that he was actually extremely handsome.
Deep-set features, perfectly sculpted contours.
Every movement carried a carefree, uninhibited air.
Even as he leaned lazily against the doorframe and yawned, his aura remained unaffected—if anything, it gave him a sort of relaxed nobility.
It was as if someone very powerful had deliberately suppressed his presence and pressure.
Yet most people around him seemed not to notice anything unusual.
Although there was a bald man with a scar on his face—looking fierce—who kept flattering Mo Qi and fussing over him.
But most members of Mo Xiu’s team seemed indifferent toward him, some even showing a hint of disdain.
Mo Qi didn’t mind Bai Su’s scrutiny at all.
He leaned against the doorframe some distance away, watching him talk with Mo Xiu.
For some reason, he felt a little annoyed.
Although Mo Xiu had just explained that Bai Su was an old friend he hadn’t seen for years, the two of them seemed to be getting along a bit too well.
Even though he knew there was nothing between them, Mo Qi still felt slightly uncomfortable because of his possessiveness toward his “future dao companion.”
But soon, he realized something.
He wasn’t the only one feeling displeased.
Perhaps because of their similar aura, Mo Qi could also sense Bu Zhengchen’s dissatisfaction.
The way Bu Zhengchen looked at Bai Su clearly wasn’t innocent.
Once Mo Qi realized that he wasn’t the only jealous one, he felt much better.
“So you’re here for the pharmaceutical factory near B City as well?” Bai Su asked Mo Xiu.
Mo Xiu nodded.
After hearing that Bai Su’s team had come for medical supplies, he briefly explained his own team’s purpose for coming.
He also mentioned Professor Frank and didn’t hide anything.
When Bai Su heard that there might be hope for developing a serum to stop the zombie virus, his eyes lit up.
Seeing this, Mo Xiu gave a wry smile and shook his head.
“Don’t get too optimistic. Even if the professor really has the ability, developing a serum won’t happen overnight.”
“I know,” Bai Su replied, “but having hope is better than none. In that case, why don’t we act together? That would increase our chances of success.
“When the time comes, we’ll only take the medicine. As for the equipment, you can take whatever you need.”
From their conversation earlier, Mo Xiu had already learned that Bai Su was now the captain of an ability squad in the University City Base.
He had also awakened an ice-type ability and was fairly strong.
If they helped, the mission’s success rate would certainly be higher.
Still, there was something Mo Xiu worried they might not know.
So he felt they should be mentally prepared.
“We previously received information that there may be a Level Seven zombie at the pharmaceutical factory.”
“A Level Seven zombie?”
Bai Su was also shocked.
But their base needed the medical supplies just as badly.
And since Mo Xiu’s mission was connected to developing a cure for the zombie virus, they definitely had to participate.
Thus, the two of them began discussing the plan for their next move together.
