Chapter 52: The Potion
Mo Xiu didn’t care at all about what the others were thinking. What concerned him more was that in this life, the growth rate of the zombies seemed to be much faster than he remembered.
Something about this was seriously wrong. And why was it all concentrated here? Could it have something to do with that American professor named Frank?
The thought flashed through Mo Xiu’s mind. Watching everyone clear out the remaining zombies, an inexplicable sense of unease suddenly rose in his heart, though he didn’t voice it.
Right now, the most important thing was to quickly find their mission target.
Following the hints Mo Qi had given him, combined with Mo Xiu’s own strength, the group smoothly reached the fourth floor.
Earlier, when they were still outside the compound, they had already seen a powerful beam of light shining out from one of the rooms, guiding them. So they had a rough idea which room still had survivors.
Once they reached the approximate location and cleared the zombies at the door, they faced a tightly locked iron door.
The most impatient among them, Xiong Gangyong, didn’t hesitate at all. He kicked the door open with a single strike.
After the door opened, Mo Xiu discovered that inside were not only Professor Frank, whose appearance Xiong Mingyuan had once described to him, but also a tall, burly man holding a gun.
However, it was easy enough to identify Professor Frank.
The old foreign man wearing rimless glasses, with graying hair, sparse eyebrows, and an extremely ugly mustard-yellow coat was obviously him.
The other man had a buzz cut and a sturdy build. His outfit made him look like a mercenary. But judging from his skin tone and facial features, he clearly wasn’t a foreigner.
When the door opened, the man on the other side showed some joy upon seeing them. At the same time, there was also vigilance in his expression.
Such wariness in the apocalypse was nothing surprising. Mo Xiu didn’t waste words and said directly:
“The person inside is Professor Frank, right? We’re from Shanhe Base. We received the message and came specifically to rescue you.”
“Specifically to rescue us? That’s wonderful!”
The old man inside immediately showed an excited expression when he heard this. Speaking in somewhat clumsy Xia language, he said enthusiastically:
“Mon, Mon! We are very lucky! I told you, being trapped here was only temporary. Someone would definitely come rescue us!”
Hearing this, the man nodded and spoke to Mo Xiu.
“My name is Meng Zhen. I’m originally from Xia Country as well. I came here with the team this time and was one of the people assigned to protect Professor Frank.”
As he spoke, a trace of complexity flashed across Meng Zhen’s face. After all, by now, he was the only survivor left from the entire escort team.
“Let’s not talk about this for now. We should leave here as quickly as possible.”
Meng Zhen nodded and escorted Professor Frank as they left the laboratory building.
On the way downstairs, Meng Zhen saw the zombies lying on the ground. Thinking about how many of them had once been teammates he fought alongside, the man pressed his lips tightly together.
But when he noticed the corpse of the Level-3 zombie, another feeling surfaced in his heart. Seeing the ability-user squad that appeared almost completely unharmed, surprise flashed through his eyes.
He understood the situation here better than anyone. He knew just how quickly those zombies had mutated. One of them had even been able to use the same fire-type ability as him.
Yet even so, this rescue team had managed to eliminate all the zombies so quickly. It was obvious just how powerful they were.
Noticing that everyone in the team seemed to follow Mo Xiu’s lead, it was clear that this man was their captain.
So when they were about to get into the vehicles, Meng Zhen insisted on sitting in Mo Xiu’s car together with the professor, believing it would be safer.
However, Mo Xiu’s car didn’t have space for many people. If both Meng Zhen and Professor Frank wanted to get in, someone else would have to switch cars to make room.
Coincidentally, Mo Xiu also had some questions he wanted answered.
So the moment he nodded in agreement, the gazes of Mo Xiu, Mo Qi, and Cheng Cheng instantly fell on Xiong Gangyong.
Seeing this, Xiong Gangyong scratched his head and looked at them in confusion. After a moment, he finally pointed at his own nose and said somewhat aggrievedly,
“You mean… I’m the one who has to switch cars?”
When he saw everyone nod in unison, Xiong Gangyong could only reluctantly head to another vehicle.
On the way back, Mo Xiu took the initiative to ask Meng Zhen about the situation in the laboratory building and the purpose of their visit.
“We originally came here with the professor to collect materials needed for research. The professor said some of the materials could only be found in Xia Country.
We traveled all the way here and did manage to find some necessary research items. Everything was going smoothly at first, but for some reason, some staff members started turning into zombies.
At first it was only one person. We dealt with him, but a few days later someone else showed symptoms. And then the situation started spreading rapidly until… it got completely out of control.”
At this point, Meng Zhen paused. Clearly, the memory of that tragic situation stirred strong emotions within him.
After calming himself for a moment, he continued.
“The zombies that appeared in the lab building evolved far too quickly. We had a lot of staff and guards, but we simply couldn’t keep up with the rate of infection.
And the later zombies—both their speed and endurance—far exceeded anything we imagined or could control. Some zombies even began to use abilities!”
What Meng Zhen described was mostly what Mo Xiu had expected. However, there was something else he cared about more.
“If the zombies spread so quickly and were that difficult to deal with, then how did you and Professor Frank manage to escape?” Mo Xiu asked.
“We didn’t escape at all. Weren’t we trapped in that room?” Meng Zhen gave a bitter smile. But after glancing at Professor Frank beside him, he decided to speak honestly.
“To be honest, I was infected too. But I was lucky—I was only scratched by a zombie at the very end.
Thanks to Professor Frank. At a critical moment, he used a semi-finished potion on me. It actually managed to suppress the zombie virus in my body!”
“You mean the professor has already used the potion on you? So a potion that can resist the zombie virus has already been developed?” Mo Xiu said in shock.
In his previous life, he had never heard of such a thing—even up until the moment of his death. But then again, he had never heard of Professor Frank either.
Among the people in the car, the most excited one was the youngest—Cheng Cheng.
He was sitting right next to Meng Zhen. Hearing this, he immediately asked curiously,
“Really? That’s amazing! Brother Meng Zhen, can I see the wound where the zombie scratched you?”
Meng Zhen generously rolled up his sleeve and showed his arm.
On his arm were indeed two very obvious claw marks.
Although the color was somewhat dark, it still looked within a normal range. It wasn’t like the strange grayish-black wounds they usually saw after zombie injuries.
The surrounding skin tissue also appeared normal. According to him, the wound had already been like this for several days without worsening, which meant the potion truly seemed effective.
“My god! A potion for the zombie virus has actually been developed! That’s incredible! Does that mean the apocalypse might end soon?”
Cheng Cheng waved his hands excitedly. Just thinking about returning to a normal life made his eyes brim with tears.
“That’s great, that’s great! When I get back, I’m immediately telling Xiao Wan and Brother Xie! When they hear about this, they’ll definitely be thrilled!”
Seeing the youthful energy of the person beside him, Meng Zhen’s expression softened. Professor Frank also wore a smiling expression and waved his hand.
“No rush, no rush. Research must continue. Meng’s case might just be a special one. We still need more evidence to prove the potion works. We must also ensure the materials and equipment are complete!”
“Yes! Yes! You’re absolutely right!” Cheng Cheng nodded repeatedly and soon began chatting enthusiastically with the two beside him.
Mo Xiu drove quietly while listening.
It was rare for him to feel somewhat relaxed.
Only Mo Qi, sitting beside him, glanced at the three people in the back seat through the rearview mirror.
When his gaze fell on Meng Zhen, he frowned slightly without making a sound.
Something wasn’t right.
This man’s condition was very wrong.
Although it was subtle, as a veteran Demon Sovereign, Mo Qi could still sense demonic energy from Meng Zhen.
Without asking unnecessary questions, Mo Qi directly extended his divine sense and quietly examined the person in the back seat.
Then he discovered something shocking.
At the place where Meng Zhen had been scratched by the zombie, the remaining demonic energy was so faint that it would almost have no effect.
But the demonic energy inside his body hadn’t been removed at all.
It had merely been suppressed and isolated in a deeper part of his body—temporarily sealed away.
Not only that, the demonic energy inside him seemed to be “multiplying and growing” on its own.
In other words, if the barrier isolating that demonic energy ever failed one day, this man would immediately turn into a zombie.
And most likely… he would leap directly into becoming a high-level zombie.
