Chapter 49: Searching for Someone
When Xiong Mingyuan heard Xiong Gangyong’s words, the corner of his mouth twitched. The place where the professor from Country A had gone missing was extremely dangerous, so he actually didn’t want his younger brother to go along.
But judging from the current situation, he probably wouldn’t be able to stop him. If he forced the issue, Mo Xiu might end up holding a grudge.
Xiong Mingyuan had already mostly decided on the team members beforehand. Now, adding Mo Xiu and his group, there were about a dozen ability users in total—each one among the most capable fighters in Shanhe Base.
The situation was urgent. Once the people who would go search for the professor from Country A were confirmed, the group set off not long after.
Before they left, Lu Pingwan and Xie Wu learned that this mission might be dangerous, so they prepared quite a lot of supplies for them.
Food, tools, and daily necessities—everything was packed. Early in the morning they escorted them all the way to the base entrance, looking extremely worried.
Xie Wu even opened his mouth several times, clearly wanting to go with them.
But he also knew that he didn’t have any abilities. If he went along, he might not only be unable to help, but might even become a burden.
In the end, he ran over and gave Cheng Cheng a tight hug, asking them to make sure they returned safely, before reluctantly watching them leave.
The group split into three off-road vehicles. Their destination was on the outskirts of the city—far more remote than the place where Mo Xiu had previously found the mutated gray wolves.
Most people didn’t know much about Mo Qi.
Their impression of him was simply that he was the pretty boy beside Mo Xiu.
Even though at the previous gathering Xiong Mingyuan, as the base chief, had treated Mo Qi with respect, those people assumed it was only because of Mo Xiu.
As for Mo Xiu bringing his “canary” along on such an important mission, many of them had their complaints.
However, they had also heard that Mo Xiu was very powerful and possessed dual abilities, so they didn’t dare say anything in front of him. Behind his back, though, they gave Mo Qi plenty of cold looks.
Fortunately, Mo Qi didn’t care about such superficial things. He had lived for so many years—what kind of bad reputation hadn’t he borne before? He stopped caring long ago about how others viewed him.
Besides, based on his understanding of Mo Xiu, once his future Dao companion learned about this, he would surely feel sorry for him.
No matter how he calculated it, it was a profitable deal.
Xiong Gangyong, however, was both dim-witted and lacking in social awareness, so he didn’t notice anything at all.
Cheng Cheng encountered it twice though, and it made him furious. He almost went to argue with those people but was lightly stopped by a few words from Mo Qi.
“Boss, why are you stopping me? Those bastards actually said things like that about you. You’re obviously so strong—I have to make them understand!” Cheng Cheng said angrily.
Over time, his black hair had grown longer and longer. Since it wasn’t convenient to dye it again, the colorful strands from before hanging down looked a little strange.
So before they left, he asked Xie Wu to help him tidy it up.
Xie Wu found a hair clipper and shaved it into a short buzz cut. Paired with Cheng Cheng’s handsome and sunny face, he looked much younger than before—almost like a high school student.
Hearing his words, Mo Qi simply smiled indifferently. He picked up a hair tie and casually tied his half-long hair behind his head.
“Why bother with those people? Haven’t you heard things like that plenty of times before we even came to Shanhe Base?”
“That’s not the point!” Cheng Cheng protested.
“Boss, I just feel like someone as strong as you shouldn’t be misunderstood by them. You should show them a couple of moves so they know how amazing you are.
“And Boss, you should pay a little attention to how you dress too. Just look at what you’re wearing!
“This cotton T-shirt and those shapeless casual pants are bad enough, but where did you get those cloth shoes? They look so lacking in presence! Even old men on the street wouldn’t wear shoes like that anymore!”
Hearing Cheng Cheng’s complaints made Mo Qi laugh even more.
“What’s wrong with this outfit? It’s comfortable. Besides, Mo Xiu picked these shoes for me himself. He tried so many kinds, and these were the most comfortable.”
Thinking back to that time—he had difficulty speaking and moving, yet just from his subtle expressions Mo Xiu had been able to tell he didn’t like certain shoes and found them uncomfortable. Mo Xiu had even been willing to waste time on the road choosing things for him.
Mo Xiu truly loved him.
In fact, for Mo Qi, this whole trip felt more like a travel date between him and Mo Xiu.
There were just a few too many people around them, making it somewhat annoying.
Thinking of this, Mo Qi sat down on a nearby chair and sighed softly.
When Mo Xiu returned to their temporary resting place from outside, he happened to see that scene.
He frowned slightly and quickly walked over to Mo Qi.
“What’s wrong? Why are you sighing? Did someone upset you?” he asked worriedly.
Hearing this, Mo Qi snapped out of his thoughts. The smile returned to his face as he replied helplessly,
“Who else could make me unhappy? It’s you. What were you doing just now? You came back so late—I was starting to miss you.”
As he spoke, he wrapped his arms around the other man’s waist and naturally rested his head against Mo Xiu’s abdomen, completely unconcerned about whether others were around.
Mo Xiu felt a little embarrassed at first, but then he thought: why care about the opinions of people who didn’t matter?
The most important thing was that Mo Qi was happy.
So he relaxed and let the man hold him.
His hand gently smoothed Mo Qi’s hair as he said softly,
“The environment out here isn’t as good as inside the base. If you feel uncomfortable or need anything, you have to tell me.”
Hearing this, Mo Qi rubbed against his waist again, inhaling the scent from Mo Xiu’s body with satisfaction.
A contented smile spread across his face.
Cheng Cheng, who had been complaining to Mo Qi earlier, fell silent. Watching the two of them hugging, he scratched his head awkwardly.
For some reason, whenever Boss and Brother Mo were together, there was always an atmosphere that made it impossible for others to intrude.
It made him feel like… he shouldn’t even be standing there.
So after lingering for a while and seeing that Mo Xiu and Mo Qi still hadn’t separated—just quietly holding each other—Cheng Cheng left out of boredom.
After hugging for quite a while, Mo Qi finally felt satisfied. He raised his head and looked at Mo Xiu.
“How’s the search going?”
Mo Xiu frowned slightly and shook his head.
Although Xiong Mingyuan had said earlier that Professor Frank from Country A had likely disappeared somewhere around this area, after carefully searching they still hadn’t found any trace of him.
Looking for him felt like searching for a needle in the ocean.
Mo Xiu had no idea where to start.
Seeing the troubled look on his face, Mo Qi felt a pang of sympathy. He reached out and rubbed the crease between Mo Xiu’s brows.
His previously relaxed attitude gradually became more serious.
“You really want to find him?” Mo Qi asked. At first he thought this was just an unimportant mission to fill numbers, but judging from Mo Xiu’s seriousness, it seemed different from what he expected.
“Mm,” Mo Xiu responded.
“I want to end this apocalypse. I want to return to the past. I want to live a peaceful and happy life with you.
“But things don’t seem as simple as I imagined. This area barely had any people to begin with, and after the apocalypse it became even more deserted.
“We’ve been here for so many days and haven’t even found a single person.
“If this continues, not only will we fail to find him—the team’s supplies will probably run out soon.”
Mo Qi didn’t hide his thoughts.
Who wouldn’t want to return to the days before the apocalypse? Those peaceful times were safe and comfortable.
You didn’t have to worry about suddenly encountering zombies or mutated monsters you couldn’t deal with.
“I see…” Mo Qi murmured after hearing this.
He searched through the memories of the original body’s owner and found that life had indeed been far more stable before. The prosperous and comfortable scenes the original owner had seen on television—none of them had experienced such things themselves.
Mo Xiu said he wanted a peaceful and happy life with him.
Mo Qi was included in his vision of the future.
And Mo Xiu… was also the person Mo Qi intended to spend his life with—his future Dao companion.
Naturally, Mo Xiu’s dreams became something Mo Qi would strive for as well.
With that thought, Mo Qi closed his eyes and began mobilizing the spiritual sense within his body.
Ever since meeting Mo Xiu, his condition had been steadily improving. Especially after obtaining the crystal core of that mutated gecko, he could draw purer demonic energy and power from it for cultivation.
As a result, his physical strength had improved somewhat, and the range his spiritual sense could cover had expanded.
Earlier, when Xiong Mingyuan described the professor’s appearance to Mo Xiu, Mo Qi had been nearby and heard everything clearly.
Finding him wasn’t impossible.
Unfortunately, they didn’t have any of the professor’s personal belongings. Otherwise, he could have used spells or divination, which would have been much easier.
So instead, Mo Qi spread out his spiritual sense across the entire region, conducting a carpet-style search for any similar target.
Fine beads of sweat gradually appeared on his forehead.
While concentrating, Mo Qi also had to suppress the excessive expansion of his spiritual sense so it wouldn’t place too much strain on his body.
At the same time, Mo Xiu—still holding him—noticed something was wrong.
The man in his arms had suddenly fallen silent.
Looking down at Mo Qi’s increasingly pale face and tightly pressed lips, Mo Xiu’s heart tightened.
“Mo Qi! Mo Qi, what’s wrong? Where does it hurt? Tell me quickly—are you okay?” he called anxiously.
He bent down slightly, gripping Mo Qi’s shoulders and gently shaking him.
Mo Qi simply shook his head and spoke softly in a reassuring tone.
“I’m fine. Don’t worry about me. Just wait a little longer… just a little while more.”
Even so, his arms tightened around Mo Xiu unconsciously as his body endured the discomfort.
Finally—beyond the very limit his body could bear—his spiritual sense detected the faint aura of a living person somewhere at the edge of its reach.
Mo Qi clenched his teeth and focused all his attention on that newly discovered spot.
Just before his body could no longer endure it, he suddenly opened his eyes.
Letting out a long breath, Mo Qi smiled in relief.
Then he looked up at the young man and said with a slightly playful tone,
“Mo Xiu… I found that professor.”
