Chapter 157: Reunion with the Old Man
Chu Feng brought Gray, Lisi, and Hughes back with him.
Hughes had made thorough preparations for this trip. First, he shaved off his beard. Then, he bought two beauty elixirs from the shaman, which lightened his skin by several shades.
As a result, Hughes, who had originally looked bulky and rugged, now appeared quite youthful — almost childlike.
When Duoduo saw Gray and Lisi, he got excited and chatted animatedly with them.
Chu Feng looked at Manning and said, “Keep an eye on them.”
Manning looked a bit flustered. “Me?”
He scratched his head awkwardly. He still didn’t know much about this world, let alone how to manage others. Chu Feng took a deep breath and said, “Don’t you know how to order delivery?”
“Just make sure they don’t starve.”
Manning nodded. “Alright.”
If it was just about keeping them from starving, he could definitely handle that — he was already great at ordering food.
The new arrivals were very curious about everything in the villa. Lisi clung to Manning, asking him to teach her how to use the computers and TVs. Hughes only half-understood things himself but soon figured out how to turn devices on and started studying them on his own.
The next day, Lin Zhihao arrived.
When he saw Lisi, he was amazed. “Such a pretty girl! Even more beautiful than the celebrities on TV.”
Chu Feng looked at Lin Zhihao and said, “They’re all undocumented. Help them get familiar with the language here, teach them how to use the internet and all that.”
Lin Zhihao nodded. “Alright, but… I’ve never taught anyone before.”
Chu Feng patted him on the shoulder. “You can learn if you don’t have experience. Or hire a few teachers if needed. But since they’re undocumented, be cautious.”
Zhihao nodded. “Got it. I understand.”
He glanced at Lisi again and thought to himself: Such a beautiful girl, too bad she’s undocumented. If she had legal identity, she could totally be a celebrity.
Chu Feng and Illya continued their daily search for witch stones. Thanks to their efforts, they had already found eighteen.
While walking down the street, Chu Feng and Illya saw a cordoned-off area ahead.
“Someone died again, huh…” Chu Feng listened to the bystanders and raised his brows.
A man had died in the red-light district — a customer, apparently from “excessive activity.”
This was the eighth man to die during sex in the past month.
“Tsk tsk, another one gone. Looked strong too, didn’t expect him to die so easily.”
“Probably all looks and no substance.”
“So many dead… The authorities will likely crack down on this area again. Probably won’t be able to reopen anytime soon.”
“This isn’t right. One or two deaths is one thing, but this many?”
“Could it be the work of a monster?”
“Maybe a fox spirit sucked out all his yang energy.”
Chu Feng raised an eyebrow at their conversation.
In the past, he would’ve scoffed at the mention of fox spirits.
But things were different now. With the emergence of supernatural beings, the world had clearly changed. Monsters appearing didn’t seem so far-fetched anymore.
Chu Feng glanced at Illya. “Let’s go. That guy seems to have had his yang energy drained.”
“You understand this?” Illya asked. “Was it harvesting yang to nourish yin?”
Illya shook his head. “I’ve just heard similar things before.”
“From the other world?” Chu Feng asked curiously.
Illya nodded. “There was once a young princess from the Heavenly Fox Tribe. She was captured by humans and forced into prostitution. She was stunningly beautiful, and many foolish men desired her. But all of them died within a month or a few months.”
“At first, people thought they just got sick, but later it was discovered that their deaths were connected to the princess.”
Chu Feng blinked. “So… was she found out?”
Illya nodded. “Yes. After being discovered, she escaped and went to a new place — continuing to kill with the same method.”
Feng said, “Lust leads to trouble! I knew it! Sleeping Beauty always comes with risks.”
Illya looked at Chu Feng and said, “Lately, it seems like a lot of people are talking—”
Chu Feng nodded, replying, “Yeah! Who knows, maybe monsters are about to reappear.”
Illya spoke with some excitement, “If more monsters show up, we can naturally use that as a reason to bring people over from that side.”
Chu Feng forced a smile and said, “It’s still too early to talk about that.”
Illya nodded. “True. Lately, it seems like there have been more and more reports of people dying.”
Chu Feng nodded. “Exactly.”
After the great transformation of heaven and earth, many humans developed supernatural abilities, and it seemed that animals also mutated. A few days ago, there was an incident at Yongzhou Zoo where a large number of animals escaped. It terrified the zoo staff. One of the escaped lions even killed a staff member. Fortunately, the zoo was closed to the public at the time. If it had been open, there would’ve likely been chaos and many visitors might have died.
The zoo publicly stated it was due to a staff member not securing the gates properly. But Zhuang Cheng secretly messaged Chu Feng, saying a mutated gorilla with enhanced strength had broken the gate and let the animals out.
As a member of a powerful family, Zhuang Cheng knew more secrets than most. After discovering that Chu Feng was an ability-user, he enjoyed sending him updates about other ability-users.
Zhuang Cheng also mentioned that it seemed like even plants had mutated. He said a few people went out traveling in the wild and never returned — possibly abducted by plants. Although disappearing in the wild doesn’t necessarily mean being attacked by plants, the search and rescue team found some of their phones, which were full of selfies. One photo happened to capture a strange and eerie-looking plant.
“Unnatural deaths seem to be happening more frequently. The authorities are trying to suppress the news, but with how fast information spreads online now, it’s hard to keep things under wraps,” Chu Feng said.
Illya shrugged. “With any new phenomenon, some chaos is inevitable.”
Chu Feng nodded. “You’re right.”
As they spoke, Illya’s phone rang.
“Your sister called and asked me to go to the Capital to do a shoot if I had time,” Illya said.
Chu Feng nodded, “Sure, I can also bring her some of that fruit brew.”
Last time, that wine caused a lot of drama in the family. Chu Feng thought this time he could go and talk to his sister, clear things up. There’s no need to force anything.
Illya nodded. “Alright.”
Chu Feng returned to the villa, packed two cases of wine, and headed to Capital.
Lately, Chu Feng had grown more proficient with his ability. He could pinpoint locations he had been to before, and the margin of error during teleportation had greatly decreased.
“You’re here!” Zhuang Feixue greeted Chu Feng with delight.
She hadn’t seen him in several days since their last encounter.
Chu Feng nodded. “Sister, you’re looking more and more beautiful.”
“Oh, stop,” Zhuang Feixue replied modestly, though clearly pleased. “Grandpa wants to see you.”
“The old man? Why does he suddenly want to see me again?” Chu Feng asked, puzzled.
Zhuang Feixue smiled awkwardly. “The jade you gave him last time… Grandpa thinks highly of you now.”
Chu Feng curled his lips. “Is this another banquet like last time?”
Zhuang Feixue shook her head. “No, not this time. Grandpa didn’t call others.”
Chu Feng responded with an “Oh.”
Zhuang Feixue looked at Illya and hesitated a bit before saying, “Grandpa seems to have something he wants to discuss with you too, Illya.”
Illya nodded. “Alright. What’s it about?”
Zhuang Feixue shook her head. “I don’t know exactly.”
Although Grandpa’s impression of Chu Feng had changed quite a bit, he still didn’t approve of Chu Feng and Illya’s situation. Illya also didn’t leave a great impression on him last time.
Illya nodded. “Alright, we’ll talk when the time comes.”
Zhuang Feixue glanced at Illya, thinking to herself: If it’s Illya, he probably won’t suffer a loss even when facing Grandpa.
Chu Feng saw her expression and vaguely guessed what she was thinking, but said nothing.
“I brought some wine,” Chu Feng said.
Zhuang Feixue smiled. “Oh, did you?”
Chu Feng opened the boxes. “There are three types of wine here. This one is the fruit brew from before. This one is monkey wine, and this one is honey blossom wine.”
Zhuang Feixue was shocked. “Monkey wine? Real monkey wine?”
Chu Feng nodded. “Yes, it’s authentic monkey wine.”
Zhuang Feixue said, “Back then, the wine father got was said to be genuine too, but it was only three or four jin. What you’ve brought looks like dozens of jin! This honey blossom wine is for Zhuang Cheng?”
Chu Feng nodded. “Yeah, something sweet like this is enough for kids.”
Zhuang Feixue nodded. “Good.”
If Chu Feng could build a better relationship with Zhuang Cheng, she’d be happy.
Zhuang Feixue brought Chu Feng and Illya to see her grandfather.
The old man looked at Chu Feng with some emotion and said, “You’re here.”
Chu Feng nodded.
He hadn’t taken a close look at Chu Feng before, but now that he did, he realized this grandson had grown into a fine-looking young man—quite the promising talent.
“You’ve got a good eye. I didn’t expect you to have such talent for stone gambling.”
Chu Feng smiled and said, “It was just luck. I casually made a move and happened to make a few billion.”
The old man watched Chu Feng’s smug expression and thought: Young people really can’t be praised too much. Compliment them once and they start floating on air.
“Stone gambling is too risky. You mustn’t become addicted,” he warned.
Chu Feng laughed and said, “No need to worry. Before the new year, I had my fortune told. The fortune-teller said I’d face many hardships in the first half of life, but would rise steadily in the second half. Whatever I do will go smoothly, any investment I make will bring huge returns.”
“Nonsense! How can you believe a street charlatan?” the old man snapped.
Chu Feng shook his head. “I think it makes sense. I’ve already made several successful deals and reached my initial goal of earning ten billion. Before long, maybe I’ll hit a hundred billion. Who knows? I might become the richest man.”
Elder Zhuang: “You really do have quite the imagination!”
The Zhuang family was massive and wealthy, and even he had never thought about becoming the richest man. Yet Chu Feng had such an ambitious goal.
Chu Feng shrugged and said, “If a person doesn’t have dreams, what’s the difference between them and a salted fish?”
Truthfully, Chu Feng didn’t really have any dreams, but in front of the old man, he felt he should at least look motivated — though maybe he went a bit overboard with it.
