Chapter 145: The Enviable Manning
Chu Feng was munching on an apple while scrolling through the latest news, “They actually cut open imperial green jade! Who would’ve thought.”
Illya rested his chin on his hand. “That lakeside rock turned out to be worth so much?”
Chu Feng nodded. “Yeah.”
He knew jade could be valuable, but he didn’t expect the random stone he picked to turn out so fine.
“Compared to selling elixirs, selling jade seems to make money faster,” Illya puffed out his cheeks.
Chu Feng nodded in full agreement. He had worked hard to sell medicinal elixirs and made just over a hundred million, yet the jade piece Zhuang Cheng sold fetched over a hundred million at auction instantly. Really puts things in perspective.
“That lucky brat,” Chu Feng said casually.
“Well, it’s not like we lost out either,” he added, gripping the stone in his hand.
Jade might be beautiful, but it’s only good for display. Witch stones were different.
“Did we price our elixirs too cheap?” Illya asked.
These elixirs were painstakingly refined by the shamans, while the jade was basically picked up off the street. How could elixirs be worth less than that?
Chu Feng furrowed his brow and hesitated. “They weren’t exactly cheap…”
One elixir sold for a million. Back in the day, it might have taken him decades of hard work to earn that much. But the thinking of the wealthy must be different.
Illya rested his chin on his hand. “Whatever. As long as we have enough money, what really matters is improving our strength.”
“This stone contains a lot of energy,” Chu Feng said. “Its quality is excellent.”
Though smaller than the one they found in the ancient tomb, it seemed to be of even higher grade.
The stone had been hidden in a bathtub, and Illya had put in serious effort to track its leaking energy. Once they broke the seal on the surface, a surge of pure energy poured out, offering both of them a great boost.
Chu Feng thought to himself: This witch stone may have solved an immediate problem, but it’s still far from enough.
There were too many people and too few stones. You couldn’t just find one lying around.
If he joined the national ability-user organization, he might get an official allocation of witch stones—But his powers were way too unique. If they were exposed, he might not even have a place to be buried.
Illya glanced at Chu Feng. “Let’s head back first.”
Chu Feng nodded. “Alright.”
He silently wondered how much gold did Lan Hu earn for him this time? Even if he couldn’t spend it all, just seeing the number grow felt nice.
Chu Feng and Illya returned to the Crescent Village. As usual, they first visited the shamans.
“You’re back,” the Shaman Qiu Luo greeted them smugly.
Chu Feng looked at him with curiosity. “You look very pleased, shaman.”
Qiu Luo nodded. “A few days ago, I went to meet with the goblin tribe’s shaman.”
Chu Feng frowned slightly. Goblins were notoriously ugly and preferred to live in dark, damp places. Many races looked down on them.
Qiu Luo pulled out an object and said, “Here, this is for you.”
Chu Feng was intrigued. “What is it?”
Qiu Luo smiled. “It’s a Witch Stone Compass—it can detect the location of witch stones.”
Chu Feng was surprised. “There’s something that useful? And they were willing to hand it over?”
Qiu Luo patiently explained, “The Witch Stone Compass used to be a priceless treasure for a time. But now, it’s become a useless relic. The witch stones here are growing increasingly scarce. Even when they still exist, most are hidden by the aura-masking silk of the green silkworm. Once wrapped by that silk, the compass can’t detect them. Plus, the detection range of this thing is limited. Still, I think it might be useful to you.”
Chu Feng silently thought: Useful? This thing is beyond useful!
He deeply appreciated the old saying: An elder in the family is like a treasure. This shaman always considered his needs so thoroughly—how could he ever repay him?
With this tool, plus Illya’s keen senses and his own teleportation abilities, he was confident he could find tons of witch stones.
If he could obtain enough of them, perhaps he could dominate the world. Although he didn’t have ambitions of world domination, striving in that direction wouldn’t hurt either.
Illya glanced at Qiu Luo and asked, “Shaman, how much did you spend to get this thing?”
Qiu Luo smiled and said, “Five thousand gold coins, and 400 kilograms of grain.”
In the past, the Crescent Village never could’ve afforded that much.
But times had changed. Now the warehouse was overflowing with food—so much that it would spoil if not given away. In previous winters, they had to worry about wild beasts and food shortages. This year, those concerns were completely gone.
Chu Feng smiled and said, “That’s not much at all.”
Not much indeed! Chu Feng thought. This thing is a priceless treasure!
He recalled the man he encountered before who used a talisman. Though he didn’t know how that man suspected Zhuang Cheng had witch stones, he probably used a similar detection device. If sold to someone who knew its worth, such a tool could easily fetch hundreds of millions.
—
As soon as Illya left the shaman’s place, he was surrounded by a few kids.
“Big bro, that was too much!” Gray pouted with puffed cheeks, visibly annoyed.
Illya blinked and asked, “What did I do?”
Gray complained, “You took Manning to the other side of the sea!”
“Ah,” Illya exclaimed, suddenly realizing—he might’ve been found out. The first time he took Manning, they had sneaked away quietly. The second time, due to Zhuang Cheng’s accident and the urgency to save him, he and Chu Feng hadn’t worried about secrecy. So we were exposed after all?
Duoduo was excitedly hopping around Illya.
Gray picked up Duoduo and said, “I heard Manning went to the other side of the sea. Duoduo got so excited, he couldn’t even stay in human form.”
Illya was confused. “Is it really that exciting?”
Gray replied sullenly, “Of course it is! You spend all day over there now—you don’t get how much we long to see the other side of the sea.”
Illya looked at Gray’s expression and gave a sheepish smile.
“Big bro, since the other side is accessible now, why didn’t you take me?” Gray grumbled. “You didn’t take me, but you took Manning!”
Illya thought for a moment and said, “It’s still in the experimental phase. That place isn’t safe for just anyone to go. Manning is a gifted individual.”
Gray looked surprised. “He has powers?”
Illya nodded. “Yes.”
“What kind of ability does he have?” Gray asked curiously.
“He can see a person’s familial connection—like a ‘bloodline thread.’”
When Gray heard that Manning had discovered Chu Feng’s parents were still alive, and that Chu Feng was actually switched at birth, he exclaimed, “Oh, so that’s how it is!” He nodded thoughtfully.
After the news broke that Manning had gone to the other world, many people speculated whether he and Chu Feng had a thing going on. Some even questioned Chu Feng’s taste in men.
—
Manning was hiding in an office, anxiously tugging at his hair.
Ever since he returned, everyone kept bombarding him with questions. It had taken him a great effort to escape.
August looked at him curiously. Back when Chu Feng had picked Manning, August had already felt that he was a bit mysterious. Illya probably noticed something unique about him, which is why he brought him back. But he hadn’t expected that Manning would turn out to have powers—and be the very first person to set foot on the other side of the sea.
“Manning, what’s it like on the other side?” Eric couldn’t hold back any longer.
Manning thought for a moment and replied, “The other side? There are tons of tall buildings, luxury cars, and flying airplanes.”
The other side of the sea was too magical—without seeing it with one’s own eyes, it was hard to describe.
“Is there good food?” Eric asked eagerly.
Manning nodded. “The boss took me to a buffet. Just pay a bit of money and you can eat all you want! Unfortunately, I couldn’t eat much.”
So many delicious dishes, and he could only look without enjoying most of them—it was truly frustrating.
Eric muttered gloomily, “Manning, you’re so useless!”
Manning lowered his head in embarrassment. Truthfully, he had eaten quite a lot already. But if someone from the Highland Tribe had gone, they definitely could’ve eaten several times more than him.
—
In the room, Chu Feng looked at Illya and asked, “You told Gray only people with powers can go?”
Illya nodded. “Yes. Otherwise, too many people would want to go. And if too many cross over, it won’t be good.”
Although Manning hadn’t experienced any major issues on his second trip, that didn’t mean crossing over was entirely safe. It might affect lifespan, for all they knew.
Illya had learned a lot about the rules and order of the modern world by now. He knew there were many incredible methods on that side. A few undocumented individuals were manageable, but if entire groups appeared, it would be trouble.
Here, the beastkin and half-elves would be considered foreign species by the people of the real world. The villagers lacked Illya’s disguise abilities—if they crossed over, they’d be exposed easily.
Chu Feng nodded. “Let’s take it slow, then.”
Illya looked at him and asked, “Did you meet someone?”
Chu Feng nodded. “Hughes came to find me. He kept shouting that he wanted to go to the other side of the sea. When I refused, he threw a huge tantrum. Not like a gifted person at all.”
Previously, Hughes had clung to his leg like a child, bawling endlessly. He didn’t have the demeanor of a ‘master’ at all—he’d completely thrown away his dignity.
Honestly, it wasn’t just Hughes. The other gifted ones probably wanted to see the other side too.
Maybe. But they just didn’t have Hughes’ thick skin.
If he ever had the chance, he could take the people here over one by one and show them the scenery of the modern world. But for now, he had more important things to do.
The news that Manning had crossed over to the other side of the sea quickly spread throughout the castle district. Wherever he went, he attracted attention. The once-invisible Manning suddenly became one of the most talked-about people in the district.
Chui Shi looked at Shi You and said, “Little brother, have you heard? An ability-user can go to the other side of the sea.”
Shi You nodded. “I’ve heard.”
“Who would’ve thought that weak little chick Manning actually went to the other side of the sea? That’s so jealousy-inducing!” Chui Shi said sourly. The other side of the sea was undoubtedly a sacred land in the hearts of many. At first, only Illya could go, so people had just accepted it. But now that even Manning could go, many people began to stir with thoughts of their own.
“Manning really has good luck!” Shi You couldn’t help but say.
“They say only ability users can go over there. You have hope too, little brother,” Chui Shi said.
Shi You scratched his head and replied, “I don’t know about that.”
Chui Shi tilted his head. “I heard Illya say that the other side of the sea only has humans. To go there, you have to look human. Seems like Hughes got rejected by Chu Feng because he’s too short and too bearded. I heard Hughes is thinking about shaving his beard. The beard can go, but height? Nothing to be done there.”
Shi You: “Dwarves in our dwarf clan take pride in having thick, bushy beards—it’s considered attractive to dwarf women. Hughes wants to shave his beard just to go to the other side? That’s quite a sacrifice!”
